Street Fighter x Tekken

Players: 1-4
Publisher: Capcom
Genres: Fighting
Release Date: March 6, 2012
Developer: Capcom
MSRP: $59.99
Platforms:
Welcome to Street Fighter X Tekken, where Street Fighter and Tekken series' stalwarts Ryu, Chun-Li, Kazuya Mishima and Nina Williams headline a memorable cast of your favorite fighters in a tag battle dream match for the ages! Street Fighter X Tekken (SFXT) is a 2 vs. 2 tag team-based fighting game where players can freely tag in and out between partners. The game promises to marry the styles of both a 2D and 3D fighting game for a fresh take on the genre!

Well… Those are alternate costumes alright. Yep, those are definitely alternate costumes.

To say there has been a great deal of controversy centering around the long planned release of twelve DLC characters (said characters being Blanka, Sakura, Guy, Cody, Dudley, Elena, Jack, Bryan Fury, Alisa, Lars, Lei, and Christie) for Street Fighter X Tekken, especially once data for the characters was found to be already on the disc of the game itself, would be to badly understate. All the same, an official release date, along with the price for said characters, has finally been revealed via the Capcom-Unity blog. Originally meant to be released to console after the PS Vita port of Street Fighter X Tekken that is currently scheduled to hit shelves October 2 (and which will see these characters plus previous DLC alternate costumes for the initial 36 strong roster both made available for free via download), July 31 is now be when Xbox 360 and PS3 owners will be able to purchase all twelve fighters for 1600MSP/$20.00 respectively. Additionally, Gamestop, Best Buy and Amazon will also have alternate costumes for the twelve DLC characters available as a pre-order bonus for the Vita version of the game.

Also revealed today is the fact that this DLC release coincides with a major patch meant to further address the balance of the game. Among the changes this patch will initiate includes the following:

-Ryu, Ken and Akuma’s Tatsumaki Sempuu kyaku have all had their hitboxes reduced in size

-Rolento’s jabs addressed!

-Xiaoyu’s crouching hard kick phoenix loops

-Raven crouching HP loops

-Auto-block gem has been re-balanced

The Capcom representative responsible for the post with these details also took the opportunity to once more directly address the continuing controversy surrounding Capcom’s recent DLC policy:

I know the 12 DLC characters have been a contentious topic since they were discovered on the disc, but your reactions have been heard. We can cite our reasons why they were on the disc all day – compatibility for all players, save HD space, download bandwidth etc – but in the end you have to hear what the community has to say. The dev teams are listening, and promise to incorporate that feedback into future titles – fighting or otherwise.

Once again, the DLC featuring the twelve additional characters for the console versions of Street Fighter X Tekken will arrive on XBLA and PSN on July 31 for for 1600MSP/$20.00. Street Fighter X Tekken for Vita will hit store shelves on October 2 and is currently available for pre-order. Stay tuned to Blistered Thumbs for continuing coverage of Capcom related news and be sure to share your thoughts and opinions in the comments section below.

I’ve had a lot of fun with the game and I prefer paying 20 bucks in DLC rather than 40 in new disc version form for a roster update, so as annoying as the way they handled it was I’ve played it and plan to keep playing it with even MORE characters to have fun with. Well worth the money for me.

And this is why i never buy Capcom fighting games… EVER anymore when they come out. I always wait for the inevitable Super, ultra, or whatever version. This game was especially bad with its content already on the disk and locked. Honestly i really dislike Capcom these days. Theyve been pulling a lot of crap lately. I was excited about this game but after reading about that and stopping to see how many Street fighter versions came out, I decided to just wait

Games companies really need to stop and think about how they utilise DLC…right now it’s as cynical as you can get where we see companies blatantly withholding completed content in order to sell it to us later. This is wrong, and entirely opposite to what DLC is supposed to do…add extra content to a game after release to keep people playing.

Look at Rockstar with their GTA 4 and Red Dead Redemption DLC. That’s how it should be done, both already fully featured games had substantial DLC content released at a very reasonable price, not this nickel and diming rubbish of alternate costumes and “extra” characters that are already on the bloody disc. Look at even the likes of Call of Duty and Battlefield…the map packs and other stuff may be slightly overpriced for what you actually get, but it’s EXTRA content that adds a lot of hours of gaming time to their releases.

They need to get out of this mindset of holding content back. By all means, start putting plans in place towards the end of development for bonus content, but never purposefully hold back ideas or content from a game…whatever happened to the notion of releasing the best game you could with as much content crammed in as you could manage?

long dead my friend.. its all about giving the most bare bones content you can in a game and reaming people with nickle and dime DLC that is really crap that should have been in a complete game. Christ we cant even get a manual in most EA games anymore. Plus garbage ‘eco cases’ Dont forget day 1 patches and other issues too. Honestly i long for the old days before games went online for everything. When a game had to actually be WORKING and complete to be released most of the time

I really hope they are truthful in their claims of rethinking their DLC decisions and by that, I mean not doing it like at all, or at least not to this extent. Other times its been some-what acceptable, but here it pushed a lot of people from getting the game entirely, myself included. If I get a Vita I will get that version to show them what they should do, release a complete game.

So that’s about $1.67 for each character. I guess that’s a fair price, although it’s still ridiculous that players would have to pay for disc-locked characters. I’m looking at you, Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3.

Whatever. I’m waiting for Tekken X Street Fighter.

Anyone know if the Megaman Fly glitch has been/will be removed?

Capcom, it’s one thing to provide additional content post-release. It’s another to make people pay for access to content that they already purchased. Given that you’re still wanting to charge $20 for this, I’m not convinced you’re giving a shit that we’re mad about this.

Of course they don’t give a shit cause despite all the contention, a majority of the people “outraged” by all this are going to get the DLC anyway and the rest are too dudebro to care while the remaining have their moms buying the stuff for them.

Also there’s some hilarity when you have one big scamming company saying “We’re concerned about bandwidth” and another saying “ALL DIGITL IS DA FUTURE, BWHAHAHAHA. ALL YOUR RIGHTS ARE BELONG TO US.” while drinking champagne from a baby’s skull.

So really, the only positive here is “Capcom: Hey, at least we’re not EA.” Of course we.. its not hard to be better than “EA: Hitler? We can do top that.”

“Anyone know if the Megaman Fly glitch has been/will be removed?”

I believe it has been already. A few major glitches, such as the ones that enabled a few infinite combos, have already been addressed, and while I’m not completely certain, I think that may be one of them.

Megaman’s fly glitch was fixed, but introduced another glitch with Rolento that would cause the game to freeze. A patch last month took care of that now too.

I have a serious love/hate relationship with this game, and this new announcement is not helping anything.

Street Fighter X Tekken Review

Street Fighter X Tekken Review

When Capcom and Namco announced that there would be TWO crossover games with the Street Fighter and Tekken franchises two years ago, it was clear that this was going to be something magical. That fact was only cemented further with the obscene amount of online marketing coverage and newfangled gameplay mechanics that Capcom let slow cook for almost two years. But, when these two different fighting worlds collide, how does it taste in the end?

PROS Gigantic Roster, Excellent gameplay balance, Tons of cooperative modes, Solid online play
CONS Story is both lightweight and portrayed poorly, Slightly long loading times
WTF?! Dan/Bokujin Team will only exist in my dreams

The Pandora artifact, a cube of unknown alien origin, crash lands on the earth in a meteor. This sparks the involvement of the Shadowloo organization headed by the one “propelled by evil” M. Bison, the Mishima Zaibatsu, the global corporation owned and operated by pretty boy Jin Kazama, and every fighter who thinks having an alien cube as a desk drawer would round out their home study. While world domination is centric to both of these organizations, the major threats are those who stand guard over the object at its impact point in the Antarctic. While there is a story to Street Fighter x Tekken, it is both incredibly lackluster and ultimately the only thing that detracts from the title. At the beginning of arcade mode, you are treated to a stop motion artwork explanation of the Pandora event, and a differing one if you have one of the predetermined teams (Ryu/Ken, Guile/Abel, Yoshimitsu/Raven, etc.).

Wagons…East!

The story shows itself off in the game quite uniquely at the end of matches, with the victors having their own unique dialogue with the person they just defeated. It actually surprised me at how robust Capcom made this aspect as the rest of the story seems to suffer through mediocrity. At the end of the arcade mode, players will fight the main team behind the evil organizations (If your point character is from SF, you will fight Jin/Xiaoyu, and if your point character is from Tekken, you will fight Bison/Juri) and then a final boss at the Pandora crash site (Ogre if your point character is from SF and Akuma if the point character is from Tekken). Upon beating either foe, the player learns of the fate of the contents of the cube, dependant on the point character, and gets a few paragraphs explaining what happens in the aftermath. In comparison to Street Fighter IV, hell…even compared to Marvel Vs Capcom 3, these stories and how they unfold are extremely dull in comparison. While it is already crystal clear that Capcom fighting games are often lacking in the story department, it seems to me that SFxT is starting to take back steps in this regard instead of staying within acceptable limits.

Street Fighter x Tekken uses the traditional Street Fighter system of fighting: The Six Button Punch and Kick system (Low, Medium, High punches and kicks) along with EX specials and super moves. Matches can be set to last a certain number of rounds with or without a time limit, but the victor of the round is the first to down one of the two characters. While tagging out is a must if you want to keep healthy in a match, there are also risks associated to this that can leave the tagged in character open to attack. Fortunately, there are also methods to safely tag in while laying the hurt on your opponent.

8/10

You know what makes me facepalm the most? The Ryu and Ken team that are usually online during Ranked Matches- screw it any online match. I’ve seen this team more used than any other and it makes me furious that the people that could’ve been using something a bit more varied use these guys. I like when I see the occasional Kazuya and some other fighter or Ibuki with some other fighter (why I’m saying “some other” is because of the many characters you can put these people with) but Ryu and Ken are characters usually for the first time players and because of that should be ridden off of the Ranked Matches because they are way easy to understand the most. I like it when I face variation but with this it’s kind of annoying to see this and ruins my online experience if I’m just going to see this team the most.

Other than that the game is fun and I like it even though the story felt a bit short. Also has anyone experienced that when you play the story mode you get interrupted so that you can do an online match or has be fixed?

the game looks amazing without a doubt but I can’t take it seriously since they included Megaman and Pac-Man.

Really Capcom?! is it because they saw Kratos got included in a PS3 exlusive Mortal Kombat that Capcom decided “we should put a character from outside the fighting genre…oh yeah I remember our fans wanted Megaman in MvsC3!…so let’s give em Megaman in this game and they’l love it” and the other guy from Namco said “good idea!…we also like to include a character from our’s….how about Pac-Man…yeah thats right!…put Pac-Man”

Other than that I’l buy one happily ^_^….but I’m afraid they might release a Super Ultra Street Fighter X Tekken 0_0

Don’t know if you were around when the original MvC3 came out last year, but people were up in arms that there were only 36 + 2 confirmed DLC characters. Having a crossover fighting game with 45-50 seems to be the acceptable limit.

Exactly. Because its a crossover game, so the roster expectations have to be higher or otherwise there will be alot of disappointment in potential characters that didn’t make it in. Plus, you know, MVC2 had over 50 characters..even if they were largely re-used ones.

MvC2 is not a good example, because that game was quite lazy and unbalanced so in the end only small portion of the roster was viable anyway.

actually its a great example because its exactly why people complained, DESPITE the fact that it was as you put it “lazy and unbalanced” which I even somewhat acknowledged already but meh lol But that actually is where the size expectation came from, and why people expect big rosters now a days of that magnitude.

I’d also point to Capcom vs SNK 2, which is another crossover game, with a huge roster that also re-used alot of sprites..but you know what? It’s still widely popular today and people often compare Street Fighter X Tekken to it. My point still stands.
