The story of the fist is coming…

I have seen a lot of fan films over the years, as one does, and while I will not say that 2010′s Street Fighter: Legacy is my favorite as such things go (there being a number of Star Wars fan films taking precedence), I can state that it impressed me back upon my first viewing. It certainly did a great job of capturing the spirit and tone of the property and all in under three minutes and a shoe-string budget. So the news coming out of San Diego Comic-Con that the people behind the film has been recruited for something a bit more official does not actually surprise me that much.

That is right, the creators of the Street Fighter: Legacy fan film, Joey Ansah and Christian Howard, have been tapped by Capcom to develop what is being dubbed a ‘feature length’ series titled Street Fighter: Assassin’s Fist. Assassin’s Fist is the rough English translation for Ansatsuken, a Japanese term for any martial art developed with the intent of murdering an opponent. The term is also often used to refer to the style practiced by both Akuma and Gouken and that the latter taught to Ryu and Ken. As one might imagine from a series using that title, SF:AF will tell the story of that very training and of Ryu and Ken’s eventual discovery of the dark history that lies at the heart of their fighting style along with the tragic history of their master Gouken all while building up to the day of a fateful battle…

According to Anash and Howard, the scripts of the series are written and film will begin shortly. The pair also confirmed the series will be distributed worldwide by Content Media Corporation. Conflicting reports about whether Assassin’s Fist is being planned as web series, TV series, or both currently are online, we will update this story appropriately as more information becomes available. Check out Anash and Howard’s announcement video for the series, along with the Street Fighter: Legacy fan film that started this all, below:

Yeah.. cause all the other Live Action Street Fighter stuff has been such high quality >.> We can only hope Van Damme reprises his role.

You are aware this is being made by the people who made the Street Fighter: Legacy fan-video? And that Street Fighter: Legacy was good? And that it had nothing to do with Van Damme? Right?

And I should care, why? The dynamic changes, drastically, when a studio gets involved. You know they aren’t going to have total creative control anymore, right? And I was being sarcastic about Van Damme, right?

So the franchise has a two-film-long shitty streak. There was a point where you could say that about friggin’ BATMAN. Should they have given up on ever trying to make it work better too?
