Today marks a big day in lead up to the release of Sony’s upcoming & much ballyhooed (lets call a spade a spade) Super Smash Bros. knock-off, PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale. Namely that we now know what the date of that release actually will be, so everyone get ready to pull out your calendars. Also released today were details on the game’s inevitable pre-order bonuses and the addition of two more fighters to the game’s roster.
PlayStation All-Stars will be available on PS3 and PS Vita on October 23rd in the US, October 24 in Europe, October 25 in Australia, and finally October 26 in the UK. Anyone who pre-orders the game (in the US at least) will receive an exclusive set of alternate costumes (as of now these costumes appear to be the same across retailers), apparently for one each character on the roster (at the very least the ten characters that have so far been revealed will be included). These costumes also are only one of many alternate looks that players will be able to unlock over the course of the game. Check out an image of the pre-order costumes for the characters that have currently been revealed below.
Sharp eyed readers no doubt notice the presence of two new characters in the above images and they are indeed the latest two fighters to be added to PSASBR‘s still growing roster. The first is of course none other than Heihachi Mishima aka the Tekken character to cameo in the most games ever (beating out fellow crossover mainstay Yoshimitsu by dent of his appearance in everything from Smash Court Tennis Pro Tournament 2, Pac-Man Fever, and even Tales of the Abyss ). Out of all the characters so far confirmed to be appearing in PSASBR, Heihachi is the only one whose actual roots lie in fighting games. Whether or not that will give everyone’s favorite crazy haired businessman an edge within the whacked out arenas of All-Stars however remains to be seen. The PlayStation Blog describes his approach to combat in this new battlefield thus:
The other new addition to PlayStation All-Stars may not be very familiar to many of you out there, save those perhaps who have played Street Fighter X Tekken on PS3. That is because Toro Inoue’s origins lie in Japan, where he has served for over ten years as one of a pair of feisty feline mascots for Sony. The PlayStation Blog says the following about Toro and his approach to combat:
Check out the reveal trailers for Heihachi and Toro, along with a new trailer for PlayStation All-Starsas a whole, below:

Someone is exiting the arena for good.
See Kat and Emmet in action!
Currently, Sackboy is one of the most broken characters in PlayStation AllStars Battle Royale. So to have a little fun, me and my buddy tried to demonstrate this one match while streaming. The following video is the hilariousness that ensued.
The best of the best have come to compete in a no holds barred, free for all, battle royal!

How… shocking.

Now we just need Spyro the Dragon.
If this does turn out to be legit, there are some interesting choices here.
Music Mondays revisits the band that brought us tunes from Scott Pilgrim vs. the World and Bit.Trip Runner.
I am not a fan of Smash Brothers,(loved the N64, after that, I got tired of it), But this game was interesting, saw it in E3 and I still had interest, but after this, they did nothing for me, how many characters in total? we need mayhem!, but anyways, I havent seen much characters I want to play as, Sly and Heichachi, nothing else.
They should stop using “Genesis” by Justice, Assassin’s Creed II already used it before them. :/
I’ll put my head on the chopping block and say that I’m still remaining optimistic about this title. I enjoy crossover titles immensely, and I really wish that more companies would attempting this sort of brawling crossover with their franchises. Not saying that the RPGs to come out of these crossovers are bad either, just that I think the brawlers have a tad more widespread appeal.
That being said, I will fully admit that I don’t expect this game to escape Smash Bros.’ Shadow. That’s a tough task already, and I think it might just be a case of ‘to little to late’ for this game. Now if Sony had attempted to compete with Smash Bros way back when that was first getting big, we might be seeing two competing franchises right now. But even with that fact aside, I think this will still be a fun party game. I enjoy playing fighting games casually and I’m not terribly interested in the uber-competetive scene. If that’s your bag, well good for you, but I think this just might be a good game to toss in when you have a lot of friends over and you need some good laughs.
So, will it be better than smash bros? No, but I think it’ll at least meet my expectations for a playstation brawler.
I’d generally agree that it’s a fine ideal and all, but I’ve gotta say, outside of the basic concept, nothing that has been announced so far about the game appeals to me. I mean, looking at the characters, the only announced ones I even recognize are Kratos, Sly Cooper, and Heihachi. I’ve never played a Sly game, and the only game I’ve played with Heihachi is Street Fighter x Tekken, so I’m not terribly attached to them. Which leaves Kratos, who is not exactly the first character to come to mind as someone I want to see in a Smash Brothers-style platform fighter.
Meanwhile, I see some mention in these comments that the gameplay consists entirely of building a meter through regular hits in order to perform an instant kill move, which does not sound terribly appealing. Smash Bros’ system is unique and interesting, with every hit becoming a potential kill if you stack enough damage on enemies, but also ways to kill earlier than normal if you fight well (meteor smashes for instance). PS All-Stars’ just sounds dull by comparison, with every attack only mattering insofar as it sets you up for the instant-kill move.
It’s called Playstation All Stars, yet one of the big character reveals was Big Daddy….that’s hardly synonymous with the Playstation brand is it? The first Bioshock was Xbox 360 exclusive for quite a while. Heihachi makes more sense, as the Tekken games were released on the PS1. They need more characters that made their debut on the Playstation to really call this a Playstation All Stars game….Lara Croft, the Resident Evil cast, Silent Hill characters if you’re getting really desperate.
The game looks to be a cynical rip-off (more so than other games that rip-off successful concepts as this really has no personality of its own), and the character list is looking pretty thin already in terms of characters anyone cares about.
No items! Sly only! Final Desination! Oh wait most of the stages look pretty flat and boring anyways besides the LBP stage, so yeah take your pick. It seems the more I see of this game the less hyped I get. Also Helghan dude and Fat Princess < Anyone more noteworthy
Y’know, ignoring everything else… Smash Bros could at least be sorted into categories if you wanted a particular theme. Sci-fi focus? Samus, Fox, Falco, Wolf, Captain Falcon, Olimar, and if you need “aliens”, the Pokemon members. Fantasy focus? Link, Zelda, Marth, Ike, Ganondorf, and again, “monsters” like the Pokemon cast and Bowser. Other thematic opportunities exist as well.
This? Do any of the characters look like they even belong in the same room together? This is further destroyed by how the stages themselves are literally jumbled together, so even if you did get all the cutesy characters together for a cutesy brawl, what’s stopping big nasty Hades from crashing the party?
Needs more Capcom…
Also Kevin Butler and the petal from Flower.
This just looks unimpressive to me. I’m not opposed to the idea of a Playstation equivalent of Super Smash Bros., it really has to impress me. It really is disappointing to see characters like Jak and Daxter and Ratchet and Clank to not be in this game.
They haven’t confirmed all the characters yet and they have already got a Jak and Daxter and Ratchet and Clank stage in the game, Sandover Village and Metropolis. I would be shocked if Ratchet and Jak weren’t included. Sackboy as well.
Lineup isn’t really interesting me that much. A lot of these characters never really gave me the feeling of “yeah, I want to see these guys beat the crap out of each other in a brawler”. Hell, over half of them I couldn’t care less about. Where are Spyro? Jak and Daxter? Rachet and Clank? Crash Bandicoot? Tomba? Sir Daniel Fortesque? etc.
What’s more, the visual style lacks the bubbly charm of SSB and doesn’t feel like it meshes as well. The graphical style feels more like the various characters were cut and pasted from their respective games than like a cohesive experience. What’s more, look at all those muted tones. Downright dingy.
My gripes with the general game play were already mentioned.
I think we can safely say Jak and Rachet will be in this game, what sense would it make to have their levels but not their characters? as for Spyro and Crash, I don’t see that happening at all if this game was made for the PS1 then they’d be front line.
well, the SSB series has thrown in kid Icarus, Ness, the Ice climbers, ROB and Game & Watch. All of those were from some pretty old and neglected I.P. at the time. I think it would be reasonable to include such previously iconic Playstation characters as Crash and Spyro (who is still getting games made of him). I’d think they at least command more of a fanbase than the “playstation cat”, Papa the Rapa or Fat Princess.
Actually, I just now saw who currently owns the publishing rights to the two franchises. disregard that last comment.
It’s coming out that soon? That’s surprising – wasn’t it only announced a couple months ago at most?
I do have to say, that screenshot at the top of the article? Makes this look really weird. It’s like they haven’t given any consideration to how the disparate art styles on these characters will look when placed next to each other, and the result is very jarring. If I didn’t know otherwise, I’d probably assume it was photoshopped.
ratchet and clank arent here neither am i
I was interested in this game until I saw it at E3. All your attacks do nothing except build a meter to 1-shot people. Nowhere near as fun as the Smash Bros. games.
I noticed the exact same issue. I just don’t see this game becoming a mainstay in the same way Super Smash Bros. has. Its a really shallow experience as opposed to Smash Bros which is simple to play yes, but difficult to truly master. Maybe the addition of Seth Killian can help but with the game due out in October and the problems lying at the very core of the gameplay system, I am not sure what he, or anyone for that matter, can do.
Interesting roster so far. I’m still waiting for “Jak and Daxter” and “Ratchet and Clank” myself. They have a few more months to go so I’m curious as to who else will make the cut.
This. I would also not mind seeing Cole, Murray, or Bentley in this.
