Sometime after the events of the Day of Light, a young man by the name of Weiss, who had lost all memory of himself, encounters an enigmatic woman named Eva, who introduces herself as an Agent of the Divine. It is from her that Weiss learns that he has committed the grievous sin of deicide, and that in order for him to atone for his crime he is to become the "Vessel" in which the power of the divinity he had slaughtered will be stored. For it will be that power that will be used to resurrect the one whose life he stole.

For a few days now I have been dreading the completion of this review. It was a struggle to go through, not because of the contents of the title at hand, but because of the difficulty in portraying said contents in the correct manner. I would love to save a lot of time in this review and just come out and say Record of Agarest War 2 is a horrific mess of a game. Hell, I don’t even want to bury the lead here, I just want to warn fans of RPGs to stay away from this title to the best of their abilities. It’s not even worth the over 1800 words of typed out here. But I have to be professional.

So believe me when I say that I resisted the temptation to make this a one sentence review. Draw your own conclusions on that comment.

PROS Interesting story idea, character portraits well drawn, adequate music.
CONS A clusterf*ck of mechanics, excessive fan-service, inexcusable graphical setup.
WTF?! Bathhouse mini-games with a move controller… obviously that was the focus, right there!

Right off the bat, the game throws at you several instances of torture for your retinas. From the opening movie scene to the criminally short and incoherent prologue, we see this mish-mash of ideas compiled into a compacted heap of a game. For those new to the Agarest War series, the game is essentially an RPG on a timer, where one of the main sub-quests is that the protagonist needs to enter a relationship with a female partner in order to proceed to the next generation. In theory, the concept is a marvelous one, as it has a continuing storyline that can be shaped by your actions and the connections you make with your party members.

In practice, it becomes an exercise of repetition and regurgitated banality. It also doesn’t help matters that the characterization in Argarest War 2 is lacking in some cases; granted the storyline also suffers from its own trivial clichés. Agarest War 2 stars Weiss, a swordsman with amnesia who apparently killed a god out of some form of revenge. The death of this god created an event known as the “Day of Light,” which enveloped the world in a blinding flash and then unleashed a horde of monsters and demons from its wake. After being told of this by an agent of the divine named Eva, Weiss is tasked with fulfilling his new destiny: to become the “Vessel” of the power of the god he murdered to atone for his actions.

I fully admit, the plot is not the most original idea in the world, but it does bring up some very powerful and interesting theological themes and questions, something that few games even attempt to do without being too self-referential. That said, Agarest War 2’s execution of this story is mishandled severely. It is mostly due to the dialogue delivery; while it is a subtitled Japanese game, the actual subtitles and translation is fairly poor, with all of the dialouge being clunky in terms of “speech patterns” and having this tendency for explaining things out for the player, rather than just showing it. It also doesn’t help that almost all of the characters never get a feeling of growth or really convey any sort of emotion at all due to their rather one-note personalities, which makes reading the game akin to a poorly written fantasy novel above all else. It also bogs the story down to a sluggish crawl due to the taxing cutscenes that play out.

There is no subtlety in the combat here. It’s a button mash bonanza baby!

The actual combat is also a mixed bag because of the unnecessary complexity it brings to the table. Instead of following the more traditional, six men on the field tactical-style combat that was akin to a Growlanser type of game, Agarest War 2 has decided to scale back the unnecessary movements, borrowing elements of the combat found in Cross Edge. Attacks are now button combos that do different amounts of damage, and field movement is now no longer a feature. Most combat situations will have you attack with one of the four field characters at a time, effortlessly mowing down mooks and mobs with ease or little thinking, making this more of an action-RPG than anything else out there.

But where it gets confusing is the whole skill system that is set up in-game. The skill system is divided into four sub-categories for each button on the PS3 controller, and to unlock special moves or skills you need to essentially grind, and combine skills with other characters to achieve them. So to set up characters, you need to level up and add skills based on the characters proficiency with skills, a total of twelve extra attributes to pay attention to as you grind it out. Add to this a unnecessary skill learning system that throws even more wrinkles into character growth and optimization, and you have one of the most broken, unorthodox and downright bloated character progression trees I have ever seen.

And that is just one aspect of the whole “role-playing” part of the experience. Formations give benefits to attacks, and allow for combo attacks between two or more characters on the field, while “overwaiting” the clock in battle reduces wait-times for attacking. Original skills are special moves activated by the L and R buttons to do massive damage when they become available. The list of features in what should have been a simpler combat system is pretty much endless. All of this is unnecessary too, as all of these features of the combat system basically amount to little to no use for a majority of the game. Even in some boss battles there is no need to go in-depth with the combat mechanics, because it’s just easier to mash a button with two-three characters attacking at a time. And the sad thing is, I doubt even fans of Agarest War or Zero will even appreciate the changes made, which makes the combat aspect an even bigger quagmire of feature creep.

I gotta say, there is a lot of hate being thrown around.

    We got:
    -hate for the game
    -hate for the reviewer
-hate for people who like the game
-hate for all RPG’s from Japan from the hate for this game
-hate for other games unrelated to this game
-hate for simply disagreeing with someone, regardless of which side you’re on
    -hate for the website
-hate for all the reviewers in this website
-hate for anything fanservice-y, the sexial kind, in general

I really hope this doesn’t occur too often. I came here and signed up because I saw there were a couple of interesting topics with good conversations on them.

This kind of game really makes me sad. Not because of its dating sim features and moe art style, but the fact that the game is relying on fan services and sexual innuendos.

Dating sim can have awesome stories and characters, and while it is true that moe pictures are drawn to attract male audience, a lot of them are far far more conservative than most of western RPG characters with bikini armors. Aside from the cat girl and Valkyrie warrior chick I think the character designs are appropriate in this game.

But this kind of game wastes those potentials. If the game’s selling points are the characters and dating sim feature, why not flesh them both out? If we want porn we don’t want this barely average game that doesn’t even have nudity in it. Even moe otakus have better taste than that. The dev team clearly don’t give a dam except for cashing in

My point is though, JRPGs have fallen low. As if attractive girls are the only thing we need in the genre. Don’t get me wrong, I like moe characters, but to see them in this kind of form really depresses me. Since the NES era, Japanese game industry has been revolutionizing gaming experience. But now gamers don’t care about them anymore outside of the country.

There was a lot that I liked about the previous two games, enough where I would call them good and I had fun playing them but this one is just awful so far. Terrible boring combat, worse characters, time limits on things, and the stupid move support.

Want something good from Idea Factory then simply go with their otome game lineup. Hakuoki was really good, so are its spinoffs from what I’ve heard, and there’s Wand of Fortune 1 and 2:

Wow, so this is the second review I have seen for Record of Agarast War 2 that makes me out to be a pedophile who needs to be jailed. I understand and deeply respect differences of opinion but, ouch. At least this one wasn’t straight out insulting me for even buying the game.

I haven’t played the game yet but I still plan on doing so. I was able to play the past Agarest games for the plot and character interactions so I shouldn’t have a problem with the game. I also like what I see with the new battle system. It looks similar to what was in Cross Edge, which is my favorite PS3 game. I never really understood the complaint on graphics with sprites, I find the new sprites to be very nicely detailed so I’m looking foward to that.

Also, isn’t a 2/10 unfair? A 2/10 means the game is a broken mess that should not even be playable. I’ve seen borderline unplayable games get higher scores that what this game is getting here. In truth, I don’t see these as actual reviews. Reviews would involve talking about the good and bad aspects of a game regardless of if the reviewer likes the game or not. This is more of a rant, telling everyone of how terrible it is and how everyone should stay far away from it.

To be honest, I was having more of an issue on how you presented your dislike for the game. I was getting the vibe that you were borderline insulting people who do like the game by focusing on certain aspects, the fanservice expecially.

Like I said before, it’s fine to not like game. Fanservice aside, certain aspects of a game are seen as negative to some and positive to others. That’s why I didn’t want to attack you for it, I just tried to voice my distaste for it. If I came across as such… I’m sorry.

Er…. they gave Hyperdimension Neptunia mk2 and Atelier Meruru a 7 and I think that the first has a lot of fanservice too and the second one is very girly looking (but a very good game).

I like this site because they tend to be very fair with jRPGs but with this one they were way too harsh, but this game being objective is a 5/10 at best.

I used to like JRPGs a lot more, frankly I don’t know if I’ve become more jaded or the quality in the games have dropped off. You remember when people would laugh at poorly translated games like a joke? All your base are belong to us! Now it just seems lazy and unprofessional.

I really gotta agree with Rob and Sage, these games are an interesting idea that’s just poorly executed. They change the combat system instead of focusing on what they really need to make work, the story and romances. I mean they really need to make the individual story arcs longer so you get to know the characters, otherwise you’re basically just picking the stats you want for the next generation and guessing what answers you think the person would like. Flesh out the dating sim features, add idle conversations, stuff like that.

Wow, those are a lot of conflicting and…angry? comments below -_- Haven’t seen this much debate in a while…Especially over a relatively unknown and lesser topic in the grand scheme of things. I mean let’s face it, this isn’t a high budget title like ME or FF…That it warrants such discussion is a pleasing facet I’d like to see more of on RPGs.

Never played the first one, though it’s on the list of games I’d like to eventually play but will probably never find the free time to. I suppose this will just end on that same list but even so, I’ll probably get to them eventually…hopefully >_< I'm an RPG junkie, who knows, maybe when I get it the price will be a lot more worth my time.

A lot of hostility is coming from the pretty severe hyperbole that the reviewers are throwing at it. Really, tossing it in with Superman 64? It may not be a masterpiece and considering how much underutilized “stuff” is in it it has obvious shortcomings, but it’s at least functional and playable; something you can’t say out of stuff in Superman 64s league. According to Robert and Sage, this game is the worst thing since the Super Devil.

I imagine that all this pretty unwarranted hate is being lauded upon it because, well, it is “bad” and bad for the same reasons I think FF13 is bad.. which means some reviewers on this site think it’s a 9/10.. but they aren’t reviewing it, so anyway. But, beyond that, we’ve probably reached a tipping point for the JRPG where this breed of JRPG is all we’re going to be getting stateside until places like Square and Namco start pulling their heads out of their asses a bit more frequently and this game being mediocre at best doesn’t really help the issue.

I like visual novel type games, and I’m having fun with this one.

The reviews are accurate, avoid if all you want is a good jrpg. If you want fan service though, or just something to read for however many hours then you’ll probably enjoy Agarest War 2.

Also, it helps if you are fluent with Japanese, as the translation is mostly pretty poor, and also that way you can look away from the screen if you get tired of staring at text and the purple haired jiggly boobed lady.

A clusterfuck of mechanics? That’s an Idea Factory game for you! XP

“If you really want the god’s honest truth, Record of Agarest War 2 is perhaps in my personal top ten of the worst games I have ever played, right next to Superman 64 and Limbo of the Lost.”

I dunno about that, I’ve seen the same thing leveled at other IF games (like the former games in this series for one) and really I don’t think they are that bad. :)

Heck, Hyperdemension Neptunia got HORRIBLE reviews, they completely trashed that game and I got it and it was a blast. :D

I want to get this game but I have yet to beat either of its predecessors.

Well… I’m playing the game right now and I think is mediocre, not bad and not good either.

I don’t agree about the Battle system being a mutton masher fest, you can build up pretty decent combos and has some complexity. Yeah, you can pass the battles only pressing buttons but try to do the same thing on hard. In my opinion, the battle system is a huge improvement over the two past game.

The history is there, nothing new but nothing horrible.

Where the game is really lackluster is in the appearance. The graphics are very poor (PS1ish) and there is constant lag and FPS drops. This game should have been released at 30 UDS and not at 50.

I hate the stupid bath minigame (and is required for the true ending!) and excessive fan-service too (I like fan-service, but in this game is way too much, like the stupid strip system in Ar Tonelico 3).

So in the end, I’m just like halfway on the game but I would give it a 5/10. The game is not for everyone but is not the “worst game ever made” like the two reviews on this site says so far.

Titles with fanservice can still be good. They just need something ELSE than just fanservice.

Take Endless Frontier (and EXCEED the sequel) for example: jiggling breasts as far as the eye can see and the plot is mostly an excuse, but the characters are fun, the writing is witty and amusing, and the combat system is interesting and neither banal nor tiring. Overall, really cool game.

Oh yes aren’t we mightier than thou. It’s only annoying to you and others who think like you. The people this game targets, that niche, doesn’t think that at all. This is a game targeting a very specific niche who may like fan-service or are looking for a game like this.

JUST BECAUSE YOU DO NOT LIKE SOMETHING DOESN’T MEAN IT SHOULD NOT EXIST. Don’t be massive dick just because you find something annoying. I don’t like COD and I find military FPS games to be annoying because that’s all companies make now. However just because I don’t like it doesn’t mean it shouldn’t exist. People buy them and people like them and more power to them.

Now I do not like over-excessive fan-service however I don’t think this game is bad for it. Because the fan-service is central to the theme of this product. Fan-service is a taste and just because you don’t like it doesn’t make the product bad.

Fan-Service isnt about taste at all. It’s a cheap ploy to gain a audience and that all it is. Go ahead and justify it all you want. It’s the same argument and fans say about moe in anime.

By definition Fan Service is meant to service the fan base. Majority of the time it is there to get a cheap thrill, so please explain to me how that actually makes for a better story and improves the game play of this game?

If you are trying to say I am better then you then you completely missed the point in what I was saying in the first place.

I think the point he is trying to make (and legitimately so) is this: You’re playing a game that is very blatant with its fan-service/pervertedness, yet you still act like you are surprised when you see so much of it? It’s like going to a gay bar and being surprised that its filled with homosexuals (no offense meant just making a point).

If you don’t like it then oh well, but if that’s one of your arguments as to why the game sucks, then yes, you are being pretty stupid. You can’t be in excess of something when that something is one of your goals in the creation process. The record of agarest war games are over-sexualized, why? because that was their intent all along! Don’t act like you are surprised every time you see an ecchi scene or implied sexual context, because it was put there on purpose, it wasn’t an “accident” left there in production.

I have no issue with sex or sexuality in a game at all. I’m perfectly fine with that, it’s when it’s used and done so poorly. This kind of stuff is a huge problem in anime. It stupid, childish and way over used at this point.

Look if it was done something similar to Witcher 2 then it would not even be a issue at all, but cheap thrills just take away from this already bland story. So again how does fan service actually make this better? no one has yet to answer that.

Why is this even an issue? Fan service is what this series is about. It’s the whole point of it. It’s a collection of attractive women and the goal is to bed them and move on to the next generation. The previous games did it? Why do you care? It’s not like this effecting other RPG’s. Xenoblade, Last story had no fan service. There are still great games out there it’s not like fan service is killing the industry. It’s not even killing the anime industry, there are quite a few non fan service filled series each season.

Sex sells and there is nothing you can do about it. Whining like a little girl about this isn’t going to do you any good.

Also to answer your question. It doesn’t make it any better, but it doesn’t make it any worse. It’s part of the series and what makes Agarest, Agarest.

To be honest, it becomes an issue not because people don’t know its not there, but because it becomes the sole crux of buying a game it ruins the point, to make a game.

I can likely download a visual novel that does the same cheap thrills for half of the cost, and then ignore the terrible mechanics. Sex may sell, but it sells better with context to it. Agarest has no context, has no point but to be pandering from what I played.

I say that’s a waste of time. Like I said, I get people like that. I just don’t understand why, and maybe I never will. But that doesn’t matter.

Honestly it IS your opinion. I quite love these games and I liked this one, because I am a sucker for cheesy storylines for some reason. Just like I am a sucker for Final Fantasy and almost disagree with most of what Spoony gave hate for FF8. Honestly I never really listen to reviewers. That is only because in the end I ever really trust my own opinion because I could miss out on something I like because someone else thought it was crap. Every game but superman 64 appeals to someone. Agarest games appeal to me, dunno why they just do.

I don’t really agree with anything you wrote, but hey thats your own thoughts, not mine. They don’t impact me on liking a game. Hell I don’t even look at Sage’a reviews because he sounds so damn bored when he reviews games lol. I only look at reviews just to see how other people thought it. Either way in the end its my own opinion that makes a decision, not BT, or any other reviewer. Just because just about every reviewer called FF13 crap, did not stop me from liking it.

At least you didn’t call out people for liking/hating the game like some “other” people do >_>

I want to see countering opinions though. I think its important to see how people on the other side of the fence view the stuff I like. Like I said though, just because they don’t like it doesn’t mean >I< should be attacked because I do like it. I'm not saying that attacking the game is attacking me, I'm talking when Sage says stuff like "An amber alert should go off every time someone buys this." Now, when a game is criticized for fanservice… when a major point of the game is wooing then humping the girl of your choosing, it's kinda like complaining a shooter has guns in it.

I also have the capacity to admit if a game is bad but I like it anyway despite it being "bad." Fun/entertaining/interesting (take your pick) and bad are not mutually exclusive qualities.

Most reviewers here on BT are more civil with their reviews even if they get very bad scores, which is nice. Though some people need to stop believing reviews as facts and take them as a thought. If a game looks interesting, try it out. If you think you may want a game, research about it, bot reviews but see if the style and how the game plays. Ask a close friends their thoughts as they would know you. Rent it if possible. But so many people find a review and thats all they need as fact. They can continue to give sports games and COD 9/10 — 10/10 but I will never really regard them as that good EVER. It all comes down to personal preference and people should not get angry about a review or what someone else thinks about a video game of all things

Ouch, one of the worst games you’ve ever played huh?

I was thinking I might pick it up if it ever got real cheap like the first games did, I recently picked them up new for about 12 bucks each. But maybe not.

Have you played the first two games? How would they compare? I would have to assume much better.

Hmm, the fact you can use the Move for some parts, might explain why it’s PS3 only, when the first two games were both 360 and PS3.

Record of Agarest War 2 Review

Record of Agarest War 2 Review

Well, at least he didn’t call me a sex offender for buying it like some other reviewers would. While I may not necessarily agree with this assessment, I appreciate someone taking the “I get why you like it, but I don’t” approach instead of taking some sanctimonious standpoint and peppering the reader/viewer with personal attacks.

what so you want something that is in the game not to affect a review? This is the same crap annoying anime fans talk about.

Stuff like this is annoying and should be pointed out. It hinders a game/anime and makes it very immature and childish when the people who create these games do stuff like that.

I don’t know why you even reply. It just gives them more word fuel to respond to.
