RAD episode 259- Gundam Wing: Endless duel

In today’s RAD,we get a chance to take a look at something special from the colonies…a new type of mobile suit..the Gundam Birdman!

We are looking at a Japanese import game that has been translated into English..Gundam Wing:Endless duel for the Super Nintendo. This also an anime that lead Birdman down a broader path of geekdom and all because he was chasing a girl!
Birdman suits up with the other members of Operation Meteor and goes to Earth to end the rule of the Earth sphere alliance. This game uses a fighting engine we saw before in a previous RAD featuring the Power Rangers which can be found right here!
Does the SNES era fighter have enough improvements to make it worth the import?
Will this brawler have enough Gundamaium alloy to stand up to the vicious assault or will it fall apart?

This is where the cart was originally purchased

Make sure to check out ConBravo July 27-29 2012 in Burlington,Ontario,Canada
Birdman will be having a retro game collecting panel with The Angry Video Game Nerd and Roo from Clan of the grey wolf and many others!

    Birdman

Mike Dodd is the guy who always said video games could be turned into a profession and eventually it turned out he was right. Mike is a passionate nerd about all facets of nerd culture from the love of the BBC’s Doctor Who to the very latest in the fight game scene, he’s on to it and likely turned into his new obsession. Dodd was raised to love all things that were pop culture from viewing his first horror movie at five years old to owning one of the first Nintendos in North America, it’s been a childhood dominated by the controller and movie screens and he couldn’t be happier. Roleplaying games such as Dungeons and Dragons dominated the high school years and unhealthy doses of Japanese anime were frequent as he completed his education and took sometime off to explore Canada and the US. However as all good times must come to an end, a decision was made to get some experience and do something fun and learn something and meant getting involved in the media. Mike volunteered with Rogers Television and became the audio/technical director for several successful programs and decided that he should further that experience by going to college. 4 years and several massive headaches later, Mike became known as “The Birdman” of This week in Geek but that is a story for another website….

You should probably find Gundam Battle Assault (or 2) on the PS1. It contains a whole lot more, although, it’s Universal Century-based, meaning less deathscythes and Heavy Arms, more RX-78-2 Gundams and Zakus (and Acguy!). Oh, it also has Balls. If you thought balance was off in this one, go say hi to Big Zam and Psycho Gundam Mk. III.

You would prbably also want to play the Evangelion game on N64. You can just simply use a gameshark or action replay to bypass the region block. And by the way…

There is not that much to translate in Gundam Wing ED. all one need to play it is a game genie and and a copy of the game, which is easily available itself. No need to make reproduction copies. Same goes for many, many games.

I have Battle Assault 2, and I found it super sluggish and surprisingly ugly. Still, I did geek out plenty. Definitely would be worth a RAD episode.

Well they are mechs and it is a PS1 game (I still find that 2d graphics aren’t as super smooth as they should be, or maybe my tvs are always bigger than the resolution is made for).

But as mentioned, balance was not on their checklist when the game was made. Psycho gundam MK. III is a hulking giant that cannot be stunned reliably and has a screen high wall of beams… mapped to a single button. The only way I found to reasonably beat it was to use the MS-06S Zaku II Char custom and boost like mad around it while taking pot shots or the AMX-004 Qubeley and keep hammering with boost kicks, maybe adding in bits.

Though, that’s only for AI. God help you with a human being. Though the OZ-15AGX Hydra could end up being far more frustrating. Or AMX-002 Neue Ziel.

I did have to look up Hydra and Neue Ziel’s production numbers.

Aww come on. The AT Field is obviously much more powerful than Gundanium alloy. Not sure about Heero’s plot armor though…

Admittedly, I was never a big fan of Gundam Wing. I realize most people watched it first on Cartoon Network, it was a getaway anime for them and it holds a special place in their heart – but I didn’t have access to CN when it aired. Still, I like the music and the mobile suit designs. Also Duo and his Deathscythe are cool.

There are no Endless Waltz designs in this game because Endless Waltz didn’t exist yet in ’96.

Heero’s plot armor is an AT Field. Just look at how he distances himself from others.

But what about phase-shift armor? Or the Turn-A’s shield?

Turn A Gundam has an I-Field, it protects only from beam weapons. Of course it ALSO has nanomachines to regenerate itself, and is so hax in general that it doesn’t need ridiculous defense.

On the other hand, Phase Shift Armor protects only from NON-beam attacks. Even more situational use since late CE is full of beams. Also points lost because SEED and Destiny tend to be pretty bad.

Both are technological defenses that serve strategic role in their respective shows. The AT Field is less that and more of a plot device that runs on literal soul magic. There’s really no comparison.

I wasn’t saying SEED was good, after all, it was really just a more heavy-handed, focus-tested, and processed clone of the first gundam series (though I think the genetic engineering thing fits better than Newtypes as an analogy for the superman).

It was all really just a joke though, as Gundanium is really just not terribly fascinating compared to what other gundam series had. It’s pretty mundane, and only nothing more than a strong alloy. Many series go through the motions of showing that it’s not much better than normal materials.

I have yet to watch Turn-A, mostly due to me prefering to wait for a DVD or Bluray release, so I had only heard how Hax it was, and couldn’t remember what I overheard.
