Persona 4 Arena: Official Design Works Gets North American Publisher
UDON comes through again.

Why I do believe this game comes out in North America only one day before my birthday. What… convenient timing (hint, hint, hint).
In a rather unusual move, Atlus today announced that the PS3 version of Persona 4 Arena, the highly anticipated fighting game spin-off set in the company’s uber-popular Persona universe, will be region locked. This means that only Japanese PS3′s can play the Japanese version of the game and only North and South American versions of the PS3 can play the North American release of the game. Atlus has declined so far to give a reason behind the decision to region lock the game. It is possible that this is all related to the fact that both the Japanese and North American version of Persona 4 Arena will be identical and will include both English and Japanese text and voiceovers. The company also confirmed that the game will feature global online servers that will allow players from different regions to challenge one another. Persona 4 Arena hits the Xbox 360 and PS3 in Japan on July 26 and in North America on August 7. Stay tuned to Blistered Thumbs for continuing coverage of the game and be sure to share your thoughts and opinions in the comments section below.

After seeing this video I really want to play this… unfortunately Zen United still seems to have way to much trouble to cope with the scale of the project (or it’s licensors for that matter) in order to release it here in Europe.
And thanks to this beeing the only PS3 game in existence with a region-lock… *sigh* T_T
I have to disagree with your critique of the story mode. I very much so like that, with one or two exceptions, they did not try to force fights into this just because it’s a fighting game (a problem, in my opinion, with most fighting game story modes, including MK9′s), and used them only where it made sense instead. If you’re going to have a story mode in a fighting game, the story needs to be the focus of the mode – the game has every other mode to give you all the fighting you could want, after all. By far the strongest part of P4A’s story was Labrys’ chapter, and that had only one fight at the very end – which honestly was probably the most unnecessary in the entire mode to boot, so I’d have had no problem if there were no fights in that chapter of the story.
I’d disagree with holding up Mortal Kombat 9′s story as getting much right, too. While I appreciate that it had a lot more effort put into it than most fighting game stories do, the end result was nothing but the video game equivalent of a dumb action movie with a bloated cast. Its use of cinematics, which is really all that it does different from other fighting game story modes, comes nowhere close to making up for its lack of good writing. Among fighting games, the BlazBlue series and P4A both offer much better stories than that mess.
Really, my one complaint with the story mode is that the ArcSys style of giving each character their own story to play through doesn’t work so well here. Because everyone is going through the same events (Labrys and parts of Elizabeth’s story aside), there’s a lot of repetition between the stories, especially with Yu, Yosuke, Chie, and Yukiko. Naoto and the P3 characters offer some variety by coming at things from a different angle and having an alternate ending, but once they’re in the TV world, the repetition is still present up until the tail end.
Beyond that though, I’d say they nailed it.
I’d have to agree with you on the story basically seeming the same, just from different perspectives. When playing through the story I mixed up the characters a lot so I didn’t see the same story 4 times in a row.
While I can definitely see people enjoying this style of story-telling, just wasn’t my cup of tea. Thanks for the discussion!
Nice to see another Episode of ‘Shinkara’! (and on the same month as you said lol)
Ah yes P4A/U. For a game that crosses both the RPG and Fighting World, Atlus and Ark System game got it right.
I’ll admit for someone who joined the fray of fighting games of BB & MVC3, this one I was the most comfortable in. It was easy to get into and I can actually hold my ground in most online matches.
As a fan of the Persona series, the change of VAs isn’t something that bothers me. Although the only thing that scares me is that the New English Teddie just reminds me of Japanese Kuma… is that even possible.
So yeah if anyone who has this on PS3, add ‘DJ_Jet89′ and maybe we can get a match together someday.
The story mode is less a fighting game with plot and more a visual novel with fights every 20-something minutes? Just like BlazBlue then.
I like both BlazBlue and Persona, so this is a perfect mix for me.
Yup, if you like the visual novel style of BlazBlue then you’ll love this. Plenty of it.
And you sir got your Persona in my fighting game? Wanna fight about it?! Just kidding. Great vid Taylor.

Music Mondays revisits the band that brought us tunes from Scott Pilgrim vs. the World and Bit.Trip Runner.
Wow, Atlus, wow. You garner so much good will from western JRPG lovers over the last 2 years and now you want to be known as the company that introduced region locking to the PS3?!?
Nobody else has been stupid enough to take this first step. But you just know if they go through with this every other f’ing publisher will follow suit.
Apparently the “reason” behind this is because the USA dollar is weak to the Yen, or the other way around.
Overall I don’t care or know, but the more info of this presented to us before we buy Japanese versions the happier I’ll be at the company.
Also this does-int effect me at all. I have-int played these games yet.
Rubbish. I guarantee you this is false information. Atlus is lying to you to discourage you from trying it out yourself. Region locking is impossible on the PS3, now they might be talking about the servers but booting the game will be no problem. The thing is, if it was real. Why hasn’t any other company tried it out? What about Namco Bandai and their Idolmaster series which has always been region locked on the 360. Yet the PS3 version isn’t region locked. If there was a way why wouldn’t they have done it?
This is bullshit on Atlus part. Region locking CANNOT be done on the PS3. This at best is reverse marketing to get you to buy your REGION copy of the game. Most likely pqube requested Atlus to release this fabrication.
Actually they can region lock games because they can region lock the blu ray movies and dvd movies all it takes is programming just sony doesn’t enforce it like do with the ps2 by using a hardware based regional lockout.
Each company is allowed, pure and simple, to lock a game or not. This is done by Nintendo-Mic-Sony. Nintendo just normaly fully regeon locks their systems.
I do want to take on all comers from across the globe, including Englishmen and French. I await the day that happens…after I get the game of course.
Well, for those of us in NA, this really doesn’t matter, given our release is just a week and a half after Japan’s. Hadn’t thought of Europe or Australia until I saw the comments though, but it does suck for anyone in those regions.
Honestly though, I don’t understand the point of region-locking in general. Why does any company care if you buy a version designed for another region? They get your money either way.
I agree with you on the region-locking. And in Atlus’s case, their EU releases are only translated in English most of the time, at least for the SMT/Persona franchises. So I really don’t see the point either…
But it’s strange, I just saw a picture from the Persona Europe Facebook page of an event in France where people could get their hands on the game and there was a promotional poster with the mention “Summer 2012″ on it, so i’m guessing they’ll release the game some time after the US..
It has to do with being able to tell how well it sell’s in the region like say if all the EU people just got it from the US then there would be a lot o EU copies just sitting at the stores and to the company it looks like the game isn’t selling well in that region.
That might make sense if region-locking were only done for games that get released in all regions, but for ones that aren’t all it does is prevent people who would like to buy and play the game in the regions that don’t get their own release from doing so (without also buying an imported console, at least).
Well as far as I know almost all PS3 games are region free this is actually the 1st time I have heard of a company region locking a PS3 game.
I just cancelled my order too. It may be a false information but the store where I ordered the game had announced a EU release in september..
If your going to do this. Give us an Europe Release Date as well. HOw am I going to play this game now?
Yeah… Atlus staff even commented on a forum post “If you have a Euro PS3, then you’d be outta luck until a possible Euro localization occurs.” Which stinks but hopefully will not be too long in coming. Fingers crossed for you guys over the pond.
