The stuff dreams are made of…

We live in a time where the phrase ‘Everything old is new again’ has never seemed more relevant in general and specifically in regards to a game industry increasingly focused on sequels, remakes, and rereleases. And while sometimes I worry what this trend might say for the long term future of the gaming industry, other times I just happy to see amazing and wonderful games get a second chance at and hopefully cause a whole new audience fall in love them in the process. Certainly that is the case with SEGA’s previously announced HD release of Jet Set (aka Grind) Radio and it is just as true for the company’s just announced plans to do the same for their 1996 Saturn classic NiGHTS Into Dreams.

Still fondly remembered for its remarkable visual design and ahead-of-their-time flying sequences, NiGHTS remains one of the strongest original IPs to come out of the Saturn/Dreamcast era from SEGA. The game tells the tale of two young children Claris and Elliot. When one evening while asleep the pair enter the mysterious land of Nightopia, the two quickly discover the mysterious figure of the eponymous Nights, a genderless inhabitant of the realm. Freeing it from its prison, Nights soon leads the pair on a quest to save the dream realm from the wicked Wizeman. The HD rerelease of NiGHTS will even feature the option to play the game in ‘Saturn Mode’ which will visually and gameplay wise serve as an exact recreation of the original NiGHTS experience. There is no word at this time regarding whether or not the much beloved Christmas NiGHTS two-level pack will also be included in this remake. Check out a trailer for the HD remake of NiGHTS below.

NiGHTS Into Dreams is due out digitally on Xbox 360, PS3, and PC sometime this fall. Stay tuned to Blistered Thumbs for continuing coverage of this and all other SEGA remakes and be sure to share your thoughts and opinions in the comments section below.

I can’t help but imagine the main character having the voice of Arleen Sorkin. And going on and on about “Mr. J” and “Puddin’.”

Well, pleasant surprise that. I’ve long wanted to try this game – I’ve heard nothing but good things about it, and I actually read the comic book mini-series that was made of its story when I was a kid (though I remember very little of it now), but I never had a Sega Saturn, so I never could play it. The Wii sequel is the closest I’ve come, and it was only okay (some very good music though).

    Will definitely watch for this.

My drams have come true! (pun intended)
Played Nights on an emulator, but couldn’t get very far due to emulator troubles, now I’m so glad that I can get a legitimate copy of this game <D

I have never played Nights. I’ve considered purchasing a Sega Saturn just so I could play it, despite the fact that its graphics didn’t seem to have aged well at all, but I hesitated to do so.

I think dreams just came true. If this is going to be on Steam, I’ll buy it. I’ll buy twelve!

It’s about time this much-loved classic game got a re-release so that people like me could actually play it. I hope EarthBound is next…
