Very interesting review man. I don’t always know what your talking about as I’m not as familiar with Japanese stuff as you are, but I always enjoy your reviews. Keep up the good work, i look forward to the next.

Made by 4chan? and its not porn? so.. weird… this year must really be the end.

The character of Rin will always hold a place in my heart. For me to say that about a person who isn’t even real. I dunno, I feel like the creators of this game made something really special.

I would try this if it was not for the sex. If anyone knows of a mod or a way to disable those scenes, I would like to know.

Actually, you can disable the sex scenes in the options menu. When a sex scene comes in, it will automatically skip to afterwards.
Seriously though, even though you can skip them, the sex scenes are really nothing to be afraid of. Like the story, the sex scenes are handled very maturely.
But again, the creators put in an option so that it will skip the sex scenes automatically. I have no idea why J-Dub didn’t mention that fact.

You just go into the options and use the “Disable adult content” to turn off the sex scenes.

Just about everyone I know or have heard about that’s played this game went into it with a negative outlook. Myself included. The stigma of “cripple hentai” is a big dissuasion against playing it. But most everyone, again myself included, walked away quite possibly a better person.

It’s pretty miraculous how something that was born from 4chan managed to become so wonderful, and so well loved. I honestly would recommend this game to just about anyone. I also like how if sex scenes aren’t your thing, you can set the option to skip them, and it doesn’t really detract anything from the game. Hell, on the /vg/ (Video Game General) board on 4chan, I’ve seen countless people who’ve gone in looking for a quick thrill, and found themselves hooked on the beautiful romantic stories, and really caring about these characters.

The only downside? No Misha path. T.T

Ah Misha. I kind of hate what the writer of shizune’s did with the only choice in the path.

The only hint will be this: That’s not what comforting means.

One last thing I forgot to mention (my comment was getting too long anyway): Did you know people from 4chan are working on ANOTHER fan game? This one is very different though – a fanmade installment into the Super Robot Wars franchise, SRW Eternity.

J-Dub is a big Super Robot Taisen fan so I thought you should know.

    Hanako HNNNGH.

Where was I? Ah yes. MANLY PICNIC, Emi sex scene, I saw them both coming – so infamous. But the game itself is not infamous, just famous and for good reason. Okay, except for the title as you mentioned.

By the way J-Dub, I’m surprised you didn’t mention there is an option to just outright turn off all adult content. That way if someone doesn’t want to be distracted by the sex scenes, they do not have to be.

Great review about something I enjoyed and I wanted to add

    I am disabled my self

This game shows something that a lot of people choose to ignore, disabled people date too and within the boundaries of their possibilities their relation ships are just like the relationships of “normal” teenagers. I love that the game did not choose to ignore that or made it weird or dirty.

Yes it pushes a few buttons with people and yes the name is uhm yea let’s just say a lot of people that are disabled might not be offended by the name at all, but I do see why other people do have a problem with it.

about he “game” it self, well yea in some cases it might be pushing buttons of people that they think are unable to stand up for them selves, but believe me we can.

I would liked it to be more of a game then a 90% graphical novel though.

Thank you J-dub for this respectful and good review

Maybe there is something wrong with me but when I initially heard of Katawa Shoujo and found out that it involves crippled girls, I was fine with it. For some reason, I don’t find the subject matter all that surprizing or shocking. Maybe it’s because of my limited time with visual novels/eroges that I learned that a good amount of them have good stories and are really heartwarming.

I doubt it’s really going to happen but I think you, J-Dub, should consider reviewing more visual novels/eroge in the future. Judging from just this review, everything was nicely presented and informative. But I know that doing so would be a tremendous time-sink. Not to mention, it would be kind of hard trying to explain visual novels to other people who don’t have a clue about them.

Katawa Shoujo, a game that kind of triggered something in me. It’s personal and don’t want to be elaborate on it.

Anyway, I think I came into this game with a wrong mindset. Expecting something. But I should just keep in mind that it’s fiction and I’m kind of bad when it comes to spotting inconsistencies.

Still, I walked away feeling richer for it and for that I’m grateful.

Also, oddly enough, I usually got the good endings in the stories. Except Shizune’s. Also, could it help that I have a mental handicap that I am living with for all my life? Not that that’s a bad thing mind, it’s part of myself.

Am I the only one that can only see the first five minutes of the video? And I’m pretty sure that it happened and with the previous video J-Dub did.

The weird part though is that even when I try to download the video, it still stops at the same time the online one does. WTF?

Did you try the Blip link under the Springboard one? Most SB videos are fine, but a lot of people have come across that one that just won’t work properly.
so yeah, try the Blip link.

Thanks man, that helped! I watched the video without any issues from Blip.

Still a really strange problem to be had for sure.

Ahhh, Katawa Shoujo, a truly amazing example of worldwide cooperation to create something wonderful. The cutscenes are even by Mike Inel. To be honest, it’s still on my top ten games of the year.

If anyone’s interested, a lot of members of 4 leaf studios are getting together with new artists as Somnova Studios, and are developing a new game: “Missing Stars” http://somnovastudios.blogspot.com/
