Heart of Gaming: Exit Music,
In the final Heart of Gaming episode, Leon Thomas ponders lost game series and the concept of never coming back.
For details about what the series finale means for myself and Channel Awesome, click here. This is good news. Not bad. Until we meet again.

I like it! You ran out of ideas, and now you’re going to do something different, good for you. I enjoyed the series, it was like one of those pretentious art films without the pretentiousness and plastic bags blowing in the wind. And it had a point. I’ll look forward to the new show!
Leon, it is ashame that a great series must have an ending, despite of how much the premise of a show like Heart of Gaming was designed and made way to what we’ve got here. I was new in this series not to long (I never comment on you’re videos but I stumble into them and like what you need to say) and I would like it was appropriately done right at its 100th episode instead of at 70; feels too soon and so little to give its due. But it’s understandable and it was fun to listen. Looking forward of your next project. Great job on Heart of Gaming sir.
For anyone who doesn’t want to read my long explanation on my Tumblr about what’s going on, here is the simple version: Heart of Gaming ran its course, I said everything I wanted to say, I decided to let it end, and now I’m moving on to my next Channel Awesome project. My new non-gaming show will debut on TGWTG.com very soon. I will still be part of the BT Podcast.
Sad. But I guess a good story needs an end, right? The show will be missed. Although we disagree on some game issues, the show has always been well-argued and very emotional. The original mood set by the show will be missed as it was unique. But I see you have something else in your mind, so good luck and looking foward to see it.
Well it sucks that this show’s come to an end, especially at a point where it was being featured more on TGWTG’s front page. But nevertheless, your reasons for ending it are understandable. And anyway, it had a good run, that’s what matters the most. Good luck in your future endeavors, Leon.
You could say he retired at the high point, both of the show and his personal life.
Luckily, this won’t be the last we see of Leon Thomas and I’m very curious to see what his new show will look like.
There is hope for adventure FMVs– A new Tex Murphy game is currently in production, thanks to Kickstarter.
And hey, I like Raziel. But considering the ending to Legacy of Kain: Defiance, he can’t do much without Kain.
There goes my favorite show on BT… Good luck with your next project, can’t wait to see what’s it all about. Oh, major props for mentioning Blood Omen 1, it’s probably my all time favorite game.
Telltale & AGD Interactive make point & click games. Amaranth & Aldorlera make games like Chrono Trigger. Actually games like Chrono Trigger are being made by a ton of indie developers, PC only of course.
I think my feelings on this turn of events should be quite obvious at this point.
It’s too bad the show’s ending, but I do understand your reasons for doing so. I’m just glad you’re not leaving Channel Awesome. I’m also glad your next show is going to be done as yourself and not as you the character, since, to be frank, there were several points where the dead-baby jokes just got grating. Anyway, good luck with your new show, I’m looking forward to it.
Wow. That ending was a bit of a gutpunch, considering the implications of the last few moments. Also kind of sheds a new light on what seemed to nothing but a mildly dirty gag in “calls”.
Thank you for one of the most unique and engaging video game-based shows on the Internet. This was one hell of a ride.
I already said what I had to say to you about the ending of this show Leon, but Want to say here that the ending is awesome!
I’m really glad I found this show before it ended.
I really like the tone and mood you had for the show. Of all the episodes you’ve done I think “Calls” is my favorite. As I think it captures the contemplation, “out-there:edness” and bittersweetness of the show in general.
I really liked much of the points you brought up throughout the series and, in general, it felt good to listen to someone talking about videogames with a little deeper and more serious tone. (That is, inbetween the always funny jokes about being an awful human being
)
In conclusion: Thank you for the show.
Have a great life, Leon. I hope you found your soulmate.
Thanks to Leon for doing this Show. It was a fun ride and I’ll stay on the lookout for the next Project.
For the Golden Axe I just can say that it bombed horribly and I don’t see it coming back again after the failure that was the “current-gen” Golden Axe.
Additionally I really agree with Xirbtts comment about Chrono Trigger: Square just doesn’t know how to do stuff like they used to.
Goodbye Heart of Gaming, you will be missed and so will the confused offended lot it created!
And agreed, any longer and it might had gotten stale. Good luck in your future endeavors!
Yeah its a shame when good franchises don’t get a sequel. A few of my favorite franchises that never got more sequels: Megaman Legends, though this can almost apply to the MM franchise as a whole soon, though there is rumors of something being announced in December so there is still hope.
Breath of Fire, the last game in the franchise was well liked by critics, but despised by most of the fanbase and sold abysmally.
and Legend of Dragoon, Which actually sold pretty well(almost 2 Mil. which this was PS1 era, almost 2 mil. is still good by todays standards), and there was plans for a sequel that just kinda fell through for no real reason
Anyways about the show ending; While I only got into the series somewhat near the end I did like it, despite the humor not really appealing to me much and I wasn’t much a fan of the style, I still found your thoughts on games to be insightful and that’s what kept me coming back.
I’m glad you will still be on the BT podcast and hope your new show does well and is relevant to my interest.
On other note, gonna miss Heart of Gaming. This was one of the rare series that made me pay attention to Blistered Thumbs.
Golden Axe. Used to go down to the 7-11 and rotate quarters on that or the next day play Splatterhouse. Splatterhouse made me get a TG16 and Golden Axe a Genesis. Terra’s Song…always gets me every time. One of the many reason’s that FFVI is the best is the amazing music. Battletoads…just too hard for me, not very good at run and jump platforming, the level with the jetski and the magma got me every time. I loved the comic and presentation in Nintendo Power. As for Chrono Trigger, the SNES game is amazing. Chrono Cross needed Radical Dreamers, and we didn’t get it ported over to really understand it and its connection to CT. Your right, I miss the old side scrolling beat em ups. I miss the great shcmups of the past. I even miss the adventure games like Maniac Mansion. We’ve lost genres and gained genres over the years, but to me these were integral parts to the gaming of my youth.
Wow Leon… Is it bad that I almost teared up? I knew you said it wouldn’t go on forever, but I never expected for the show to end so soon. I’ve been following your work for about a year now. I know it’s sad to say, but it’s comforted me during times when I really needed it. So seeing the end of this cynical, dark, but wonderful webshow almost feels like saying goodbye to an old friend.
As for the ending, it was perfect. Leon’s final thoughts… the goodbye and fade to color… the somber shot of an empty room. It breaks my heart but it’s huantingly beautiful.
Anyway, goodbye for now Leon. Thank you for your work. I’m looking forward to whatever you do next.
PS: Yes, a Chrono Trigger sequel FTW.
Phantasmagoria 2 was way ahead of its time? Never thought I would hear that.
Blood Omen? I really tried to get into the first one a few weeks ago. Maybe I’ll give it another go but it didn’t seem very fun.
I like Soul Reaver though! Even though the first one I played was mostly devoid of characters and such but it had block puzzles! Oh gosh the block puzzles.
Chrono Trigger? Square Enix? I’d prefer they keep it dead rather than resurrecting it and tarnishing the franchise. Square just doesn’t make ‘em like they used to.
I hardly consider Phantasmagoria 2 a good game (it was fun to watch Spoony riff it though), but in the sense that it was one of the rare games to have a gay character that wasn’t a walking stereotype and who was genuinely likeable (Trevor was one of the few characters in the game I liked) Leone has a point when he says it was, ‘ahead of its time’.
Ahead of it’s time in America maybe. I think there are quite a few Japanese games that did a non-sterotypical gay portrayal earlier.
The only game that comes to my mind is one of the Japan only versions of Persona 2 and from a gameplay standpoint that…Thing hasn’t aged well. Not to mention came out 2-4 years after Phantasmagoria 2. There may be ones I’m not thinking of, but I can’t recall a Japanese game that has done non-stereotypical gay portrayal before that.
