Will we ever get to meet these people?

Anonymous sources have informed Kotaku today that Square Enix’s long-awaited action-RPG Final Fantasy Versus XIII is being quietly canned. Reportedly, “No public statement will be made on the decision… to avoid any acknowledgement that could impact the company’s stock price.” If this is true, all resources and assets from the game will be shifted towards the as-of-yet unannounced 15th main game in the series. Interestingly, previous rumors have in fact purported that Versus XIII was just going to end up being renamed Final Fantasy XV instead of trying to tie it into the ridiculously named “Fabula Nova Crystallis.”

With all of the negativity surrounding Final Fantasy XIII, fans of the franchise were really counting on the real-time adventures of Noctis to get the once-mighty name back on track. Even Final Fantasy Type-0 (formerly Agito) is still a no-show in English, despite scoring 39/40 in Famitsu and being fun to play. With Final Fantasy XIII-3 an inevitability and Square Enix apparently in the process of moving to a new graphics engine, who knows what will come of the 6 years of work put into Versus XIII.

Maybe we’ll learn more on September 1st, when Square Enix holds a stage presentation called “Final Fantasy XIII Lightning Saga: New Developments Presentation.”

I actually taught that this would have been the game that was better then the earlier ones, which in turn would have given us a HD remake of FF7 :\ oh well I guess
Now we just need to wait for FF15 and hope they don’t fuck up that one as much as they did the past couple of games

Nice job Square Enix, truly I can see great things in your future (NOOOOOOOT…)
So yeah stupid move in my opinion.
They probably didn’t like that it was more different then the other FF games so they scraped it and are working on the generic FF games that I just CAN’T WAIT TO PLAY…

I beat XIII a few weeks ago.(finally after owning the game since it came out) I liked some things but overall it was painfully bad at times.

I’m about 10 hours into XIII-2 and while the gameplay is better, THIS STORY IS FUCKING PATHETIC!

I don’t even know how to express my dissapointment. This shit is for children. Serah and Noel are the epitamy of boring children saving the world. Noel’s character model looks shitty and Serah couldn’t kill a Bob-Omb. Seriously, she is annoying, only talks about how she is getting stronger, but I could punch her once in the face and she’d be done! Why is this my main character?

I would have liked to see Sazh (the only character I 100% liked) be the lead in this game. Grow some balls and make a black man with a fro your main character Square! Sazh and Snow get the shaft unless I pay more money??? I seriously don’t think I can complete this sad sack of crap game.

I just had to vent that to somebody. Thank you for listening.

FFXIII Versus looked great. They are driving cars and wearing regular clothing. (trendy, but regular) There were no girls in sight with high pitched voices and their hands on their hips. “How are we going to solve this mystery?!!!”

Square has learned nothing at all and it is baffling how for every good decision they make, they make at least 3 or 4 bad ones.

I myself was rather baffled by the choice of Serah as the main character, but I think that might be because she served as Lightning and Snow’s motivation in the game, and Serah is trying to make up for that by getting stronger. I’m not fond of Noel’s character design, and rarely do I want to change a character’s outfit to their because of their silly, baggy pants that would make Sora facepalm.

You sir, hit the nail right on the head.
While the combat is (slightly) better, the story is just an atrocious, rushed mess with a bad guy that would make Sephiroth go “Dude, seriously? Stop whining.”
I could go on and on about XIII-2, but I’ll basically say this: XIII was a very VERY flawed (and boring) game, but you can tell that the company put their heart into it. XIII-2 is a sloppy train wreak rushed out to try to make amends with the fans that cried foul during XIII.

At first I thought they would never cancel Versus XIII, but the more I think about it the more sense it makes. Versus XIII is a console exclusive for the PS3, and both of the XIII’s have sold well outside of Japan on the backs of their XBox versions. The console choice puts me out of the market, to be sure, and probably a lot of European/ American gamers are in the same boat.

Still, XIII-2 proved that the Crystal Tools engine works just fine on the 360, and at this point in time a console exclusive will hardly do the PS3 much good. Given all the development that Versus XIII has undergone, it would make much more sense to port Versus XIII to the XBox than to outright cancel it.

Unless S-E doesn’t have the cash on hand to pay Sony and Microsoft license fees, in which case be afraid. Be very afraid.

You know what, even if this rumour isn’t true the game is no doubt in development hell alongside the likes of DNF, GT5, Daikatana et al anyway. And given the recent triumphs of disappointment Square have managed to achieve recently, do we honestly believe anyone there is capable of overcoming that?

Waaaay back when FF13, Versus, and Type-0 were announced, I always thought Versus was the most promising. I’m really bummed that this happened, though honestly I’m not surprised. Still hoping Agito comes to the US, though I doubt it at this point.

I know some people liked 13-2, but for me it was the last straw. The story really turned me off, particularly how terribly it treated the cast of 13. That, and the awful ending that invalidated the entire game. The fact that you had to buy DLC to get even a half-hearted attempt at closure for several characters was just the icing on the disappointment cake.

I’m curious; what do any of the BT contributors think of the character-specific DLC that was supposed to wrap up 13-2? I know some contributors liked the game, but what do you guys think of the DLC stories and how they were handled?

I liked XIII, and I’ve been enjoying XIII-2 so far, so I’m okay with a XIII-3. Versus XIII has been very interesting, and I don’t want them to just make all that work go to waste.

“Interestingly, previous rumors have in fact purported that Versus XIII was just going to end up being renamed Final Fantasy XV instead of trying to tie it into the ridiculously named ‘Fabula Nova Crystallis.’”

I’d be okay with this, although I think it would be awkard to have a shared mythology spread across multiple main installments. While I know some people would prefer that the games stand alone, I love the idea of a subseries and would like to see it expanded upon, so long as it has a definitive stopping point. It’s rather odd that people are complaining about it being milked for all its worth, and yet those some people are still demanding a remake of VII, because apparently VII hasn’t been milked for all its worth. Then again, it could just be because more people like VII than XIII.

I’m rather impressed that the comments haven’t devolved into a debate over Kingdom Hearts III. They said that they’ll work on that once this is done, so if this game gets canned, then couldn’t they theoretically move onto Kingdom Hearts III? I want Kingdom Hearts III, but I don’t want that to come at the expense of Versus XIII. If they DO make this XV, then that could maintain the pattern of releasing three main installments per generation.

By the way, why is Fabula Nova Crystallis a ridiculous name, but no attention is brought to the increasingly inaccurately named “Final Fantasy?” Or, because I feel like being a troll, Shin Megami Tensei? Yes, Square Enix makes silly names, but people seem to act like they only started that once they became Square Enix or that they’re the only ones who do it.

I agree with almost every opinion you’ve expressed.

As for your closing question, I think that “Final Fantasy” is more forgivable for a few reasons. For one, it’s far catchier than “Fabula Nova Crystallis” (though I’ve never found fault in that moniker myself – they can call their bundles whatever they want, let the fans sort it out). For another, it could actually be seen as an appropriate title for each story, as said story, if not for the heroes therein, would be its unique world’s final fantasy. Though, of course, it would only be fantasy from our perspective. As for the more political tales, such as those in the Ivalice Alliance, the fantasy would be final for a particular cause or group. This title could be applied to anything, but Square just happened to use it first.

I don’t know about SMT. I believe that it translates to “Death Godess’s Resurrection,” which, taken literally, doesn’t always make since. But I personally like that title, so I won’t complain.

I’d like to point out that Shin megami tensei does make sense. Because the original series (not the spin-offs) always had the two main characters a reincarnation of the Japanese gods Izanagi and Izanami. Izanami being a goddess.

Also Shin means true, Megami Tensei means Goddess reincarnation. It technically makes sense in context of the original games.

Yes, sorry; it’s “shi” that means “death.” My mistake.

As for the rest of your comment, you’re right that it does make sense for the original series, but it does not mean as much when attached to the Persona or Devil Summoner series.

The comment I was replying to referred to innappropriate names, so I was just throwing an idea out there. Thanks though.

And therein lies the problem. I actually was expecting a response with “Well, Final Fantasy was going to be Square’s last game,” so I applaud you for actually applying a deeper meaning to the name. I’m also aware of SMT’s name, so my problem is that people take issue with “Fabula Nova Crystallis”, but not other names. They’ll justify the names of the ones they don’t take issue with, but dismiss the name they don’t like as “Latin gibberish.” In means “New tale of the crystal,” which makes perfect sense. Final Fantasy gamese typically revolve around crystals, so to me, “Fabula Nova Crystallis” indicates a new era of Final Fantasy.

Oh, and five down votes? Apparently insulting Square Enix is perfectly fine, but being an optimistic fan hoping for the best and calling out blind hypocrisy isn’t.

When Squaresoft killed itself by focusing on meaningless spectacle and graphical fiedelity in their games essentially wanting to make a movie and when they did it bombed so hard they were bought up by Enix (who I thought would rub off on Square some good lessons and values the Dragon Quest series has in it’s favor but apparently not) and then turned around and started doing the exact same thing again.

No, like when Square that was known and loved for its constant experimentation. Back when it took an approach to design that emphasized innovation and reinvention, and used cinematic techniques to tell memorable stories with characters that are still, if not liked or loved, remembered and debated to this day. Similar ideas were incorporated by Kojima in all of his games, the great and the not-as.

As opposed to the bought-out and watered-down square we have now, which killed Kingdom Hearts and Final Fantasy with linearity, monotony, and half-hearted attempts at revitalizing the turn-based battle system.

What made old Square great is also what would make analyzing Dragon Quest completely useless: diametrically opposed approaches to design. The Enix technique simply doesn’t suit Square’s bought properties.

Seriously Square Enix, fire Toriyama! He can’t write games for shit. He wrote the story for “the third birthday” need I say anymore?

Versus had the potential to be something truly excellent. If Square Enix cancels it, well they’re truly dead.

Well that’s not shocking. Of course, any development they have done on it is probably going to be thrown out the window with the move to the new engine, so even if we do see 15 in our lifetimes, it probably won’t have any resemblance to Versus. Oh well.

And… Lightnight Saga? Did they seriously name their presentation “Lightnight Saga”? It probably sounds better in the original Japanese, but at least Fabula Nova Crystallis has the altum videtur thing going for it. Then again, with the reputation of 13, maybe Lightnight is a better title for it.
