A little while ago, it was confirmed that Epic Mickey 2 would be a game containing musical numbers. Today, Disney’s official YouTube account for Epic Mickey 2 uploaded a new video that showcases one of the first musical numbers to appear in the game. And wouldn’t you know it, it’s a VILLAIN SONG!
Check it out!
When I first heard the game was going to have musical numbers, I was… hesitant to say the least. Sure, I’m no expert on Disney movies like, say, the Nostalgia Chick, but over time I just came to cringe whenever they started singing and dancing for no apparent reason in animated films and TV shows. It just seemed like they were trying to put in a musical number because it seemed they HAD to because of Disney. And that, for reasons unknown even to me, just aggravated me to no end!
Nowadays, I’ve become more forgiving of musical numbers since a lot of more modern media has taken extra effort to make sure they don’t suck, and also use them in moderation as opposed to every 10 minutes. So listening to this tune, I detect a lot of common Disney musical tropes (especially for villain songs), but it also is catchy, not half-bad, and thankfully short and sweet.
So, musical numbers in video games. Good idea or bad idea?

Cute little opening number. I will say that having recently finished the game, this does seem like a more natural sequel than a forced one, so I’m looking forward to it. My biggest hope is that this doesn’t have such a terrible quest system like the original did and be more like Xenoblade’s.
There is NO WAY he turned over a new leaf that easily.
And is this yet another song based on Trouble from the Music Man?! If it is, awesome! Looking forward to this game. If even one of the songs is memorable and good, I’ll be content.
I think musical numbers in a video game could work, if done well. Have to agree, the song’s not bad, and like you said, it’s short and sweet. I get the feeling this is going to be a more seamless blend of Disney (the musical side, anyway) and video game than anything we’ve seen thus far!
Though, this REALLY reminds me of Dr. Wily, in every possible way… well, if he could sing, anyway XD.
My thoughts exactly. Name ONE Mad Scientist in video games that turned over a new leaf and STUCK to it.
Cid in Final Fantasy VI = “Mad Scientist in video games that turned over a new leaf and STUCK to it.” Stephen = Served.
DAMMIT!
There’s also Dr. Jaming from Dark Cloud 2.
