North Americans probably won’t be seeing Dragon Quest X for some time, but it’s still nice to hear from Square Enix’s Wii and Wii U MMO. As you can see below, the game is nearing its Japanese release date.
It’s been a while since we talked about this game, so let’s refresh our memories, shall we? Dragon Quest X is a traditional subscription-based MMO, unlike the rest of the main numbered DQ titles. In a unique twist, several hours a day will constitute a designated free-to-play time in order to allow children a chance to enjoy it. While the name alone is enough to afford the release massive hype, this business model has raised a lot of eyebrows, resulting in both stock drops and (presumably) a reluctance to fast-track an English release. I guess all we can hope for is that it fares better than SE’s last massively multiplayer project.
Dragon Quest X has not yet received localization information. It is exclusive to the Wii and Wii u platforms.

Yet again I will be the only one with this view, but: I for one cannot wait till this gets an english release. I don’t see why everyone is so abhorrent to MMOs. They are not the work of the devil meant to suck the life out of you, they just require more time input and interaction with a community to get the most out of the game. If you don’t like it, that’s fine, not everyone is suited for MMOs. Just, please don’t bash on the idea and the presence of this game. It’s not a stupid idea, square did it with FF XI, and guess what? that MMO is over a decade old and still kicking. Being a rival series to FF, this move on Square’s part makes perfect sense if you think about it. I hope some of you might change your mind once it is released, but if not C’est la vie.
The smell of Square screwing up is thick in the air tonight.
All I want is an offline mode. I hate how if the servers are shut down on an MMO you will never be able to play it again. I just want to know that in the event of a nuclear holocaust I can still play all my favourite games.
Honestly, this is one case where I don’t particularly care whether the game gets an English release. While I love my Dragon Quest, I do not have any interest in an MMO version of it. When they get back to making genuine new entries in the series, I’ll pick them up, but this I’m taking a pass on.
I’m really not sure why Square-Enix felt the need to number it like its a main-series entry though. I’m pretty sure any other company would treat a new genre variation of a franchise as a spin-off or sub-series, but Square-Enix has done this with both Dragon Quest and Final Fantasy now. Kinda weird.
Yeah, Why not Final Fantasy Online, Final Fantasy Online 2, Dragon Quest Online?
I agree completely but the reason they do it is because they know some people will feel “forced” to buy them if they put a number on them and pretend they’re part of the main series.
