Borderlands ruled! I played through the GOTY-edition all alone, and enjoyed (almost) every second of it. I aknowledge its flaws though, the world was pretty empty for one. There was just some weird charm in it. Mad Moxxi’s Underdome Riot -DLC was probably the only really tedious part, that one was just… kinda lazy. It was pretty boring with other people, too. Oh how i’ve waited for the sequel.

Ps. Claptraps are funny! Especially in the Robot Revolution -DLC had some pretty hilarious stuff there.

I also got the GOTY-edition, and even though I haven’t tried the DLC, I’m enjoying the game so far.

Borderlands yay or nay? Meh, I haven’t played it, but I have no desire to. They look alright, but not really my game, but if I had to choose to play it or the COD or battlefield type of a game, I’d take borderlands in a heart beat.

Resident Evil not being a horror game is true in RE5, but there is Resident Evil Revelations which is rather scary and creepy most of the time, and has great atmosphere. It had action sections with other characters other then Jill, the majority of the game where you play as Jill has a lot of creepy areas and scary enemies, even a section where you have no weapons and have to avoid enemies or take them out in other ways, very well done game overall.

RE6 seems to want to go in the same direction, with Leon being horror, Chris being action, and Jake being… uh I have no idea. It all depends on how well they do Leon’s campaign.

I found Borderlands to be lackluster overall. When I first started playing it (I played it solo, and haven’t played multiplayer due to it not working for some reason), I had a lot of fun. But near the end of the game I started to lose interest, and after finishing the game, I didn’t care to play it much more.

Painkiller has a weapon that can shoot thin logs long distances and stick enemies to walls. That game is fun.

I have no good ideas for Death Nails. :P

So… Borderlands is a game. People think of it as an RPG, a shooter & action game, and it received(s) a whole lot of praise. But…. it’s not very good, and here’s why.

RPGs are games that include both roleplaying, and some sort of persistently developing character that is meaningful in some way. If you can RP a character seriously in borderlands without being broken by the lack of immersion, I salute you. As for the development of your character – you certainly level up, but what does that really get you? You can assign stat points into a couple of different skill trees, but all of those assigned points merely result in an incremental number increase in damage dealt, damage taken, and a modification of things you can already do (i.e. shoot people in the face, but now with .7% more accuracy!). Austin, I think you mentioned in the podcast that it’s a FPS diablo? How could you possibly make that comparison? Diablo, even the third game which removes some of the choices in character development has a litany of different, interesting, and cool skills to use in a variety of circumstances. Borderlands has one skill. ONE skill per class. Any other game you throw down between Dungeon Siege, Torchlight and other typical dungeon delver game comes with a lot of cool stuff every character can do, but Borderlands could not have been more vanilla coming to character development, and I don’t see how that helps it succeed as an RPG.

Sure, I guess you get a lot of loot in the form of randomized weapons, but here’s where the game starts to fail as a shooter. None of the weapons are particularly satisfying to fire, the sound design for the weapon effects is.. tame, and pedestrian. It makes a big difference if you take a gun like the shotgun in Doom 3 & how dissatisfying it is, and take something like say, the MG3 from Battlefield Bad Company 2 – it makes a real impact on how enjoyable the game is. Also, since the game is largely mired in statistics, you find yourself sometimes with an underpowered gun, railing off what seems like a mountain of ammunition to kill something that looks the same as something you killed very easily 20 minutes before. Woohoo, it has the most guns in a game ever made – The 2nd & third Matrix movies had lots of guns too, but I guess they were pretty good….

The art style & music are more subjective, so I don’t really have much to say about it. Personally I disliked them.

As for funny, maybe I’m used to thinking of funny games like the Monkey Island series of games or “Sam & Max Hit the Road”. It’s possible I was in poor humour because of the rest of the features that fell flat, but it definitely didn’t strike me as a well written, funny & entertaining game.

When you play a game that is essentially a giant grind (most MMOs, Diablo, Torchlight, etc.) the success of the game banks on keeping the player under the illusion that they’re doing something different. A fedex quest at the beginning of the game is the same as one in the middle or at the end, but you need to implement features that allow the player to *feel* like something is different. If you start out simply bashing monsters’ skulls in with a hand axe, then you’re jumping about the battlefield, using shouts, transitioning to whirlwinds or unleashing arcane power in waves of untold destruction – it helps you forget that you’re doing more or less the exact same thing you were doing at the very beginning of the game. Borderlands couldn’t deliver that with its ho-hum shooter mechanics, poor development trees, and lackluster story.

    Borderlands sucked. Hard.

I’m sorry James but I am on Johnnys Side – Borderlands is a really boring Game – I played through it solo once but thats because I can take a lot of shit before I say: fuck this Game. (Fuck you FF13( and 13-2 >:( )
Claptrap, Marcus and Dr. Zed/Ned are fun NPCs but overall theres nothing really that carries the Game – actually after I played through it the first time – even playing it with People became really tedious. :/

But all in all it is just one Opinion and 2-1 between you two :x

kotaku lost every ounce of credibility when one of their writers claimed that Diablo 3 (a game I was very dissapointed in) was a great game BECAUSE OF THE DRM. They claimed that it made the game feel more like another world, it had the most rediculous claims, and based on how many Diabo 3 ads were on that site, I’ll bet that article was pretty “sponsored.”

I don’t play with other people, I made it to the first boss before I found out that the first game is unplayable with the class I picked when I’m alone, so yeah, to me that game was crap.

I started laughing when Johnny compared Cod to Twilight, it reminded me of a demotivational poster I saw that said “Call of Duty, Twilight for men” (I can’t find the image anymore).

For the record I have no beef with the Cod series I actually thought Jim Sterling made a good case for what makes the Modern Warfare stick out as a franchise.

DRIVE IS AN AWESOME FILM, you should watch it on Netflix Leon. Take it from the guy who watched The Perfect Host when you recommended it. And yes, Hotline Miami looks awesome.

    Borderlands? No comment.

A game called Death Nails? I’d play that. Have it be a 1st/3rd person shooter and have the gimmick be based around piercing physics. You can kill enemies more effectively by hitting them in a way that they get nailed to walls and there are puzzles based around pinning stuff to walls with your gun and there can be special boss finishers a-la Madworld where you pin your opponent to a wall in a specific way. As we all know brutally pinning stuff to walls is fun.

I only play games alone (I know I am a sad person) and borderlands is the bomb to play it solo and the humor of the game…….. omg pants crapping fun, the characters are fun (except for claptrap I want to strap him to a rocket and shoot him to the moon)

Instead of the steam summer sale, I spend all my money on borderlands 2 pre order and I would have given my soul with it if needed, because borderlands 2 looks even better and funnier and thank god the only claptrap left is that one claptrap. (mainly because I did shoot all of the other claptraps to space in my space rocket) I would like to hunt down handsome Jack right now!!!!!!!

I hate Johnny and Leon now because I am a raging nerd and steam actually comes out of my ears, nose and eyes now and would feed them to skagzilla if I could.
