Before Mass Effect, Dragon Age, or even Knights of the Old Republic, there was Baldur’s Gate. Only the second title from master game developer BioWare, BG remains one of the best games based on the Dungeons & Dragons universe ever made. Indeed, perhaps the only other games that make use of the license that can claim to be better are its own sequel Baldur’s Gate II, also from BioWare, and Planescape: Torment. Regardless, BG is a true classic of the RPG genre and as such it is perhaps not that much of a surprise that a remake of the game is forthcoming.
Originally announced back in March, Baldur’s Gate: Enhanced Edition today finally received a release date and a price point from publisher Atari and developer Overhaul Games. The PC version of Baldur’s Gate: Enhanced Edition will be released on September 18 for $19.99. The iOS and Mac versions will also see release in September, though an exact date for both remains pending, with the latter priced the same as its PC counterpart while the mobile version of the game rings in at reduced price of $9.99. A date for the promised Android tablet version of the game is also currently TBA.
More than just a straight port of the original, according to developer Overhaul Games, BG:EE will see “over 400 improvements” including new cinematics, what is being described as an “improved interface”, and cross-platform online multiplayer. The game will also feature wholly original new content as well, with three such additions being fully revealed today. These consist of two new characters that players of BG:EE will be able to add to their party and a brand new standalone adventure that promises over six hours of additional gameplay. Descriptions and screenshots of all three follow.
Neera is a half-elf wild mage slowly coming to terms with her enormous magical potential. Add her to your Baldur’s Gate: Enhanced Edition experience and ignite your wild side. This half-elf wild mage finds both delight and terror in her capricious magic while fleeing both her past mistakes and the merciless Red Wizards of Thay.
Neera adds the following Enhancements to Baldur’s Gate:
• The Wild Mage Neera, a new NPC to join your party
• An engaging romantic adventure
• Up to four hours of additional gameplay
• New area: a secluded hideaway northeast of Durlag’s Tower
Dorn is a half-orc Blackguard whose otherworldly patron grants him terrible powers in the form of his black sword and unholy spells. Add him to your Baldur’s Gate: Enhanced Edition and inflict evil to the last corpse. Betrayed by his former companions, the half-orc Dorn Il-Khan lusts for revenge and glory in equal measure.
Dorn adds the following Enhancments to Baldur’s Gate:
• The Blackguard Dorn II-Khan, a new NPC to join your party
• Up to four hours of additional gameplay
• The Blackguard kit to create your own champion of evil
• A stand-alone adventure set deep within the Underdark
• Fifteen levels of arena-style combat challenges
• Full control and customization of up to six party members
• Over 6 hours of additional gameplay

I wonder if Xzar is still insane? My guess is yes.

I loved 2nd edition Wild Magic so I will definitely check out the new Baldur’s Gate. I remember playing a wild mage once in a campaign and tried casting dispell magic. I ended up creating a dispell magic monster who ate up several magic items (they were all the enemies’ gear) and the original target of my spell. :p
