Stupid, over-the-top, and shameless. It’s everything we expected and it’s AWESOME!
The bosses of Lollipop Chainsaw are revealed. Insanity ensues.
Girl power!
It’s time to learn about “Sparkle Hunting.”
I’m out of ways to say “Wow, that was weird.”
Meet the severed head of Juliet’s boyfriend!
I wonder if she will use her boomsticks…

This game may be a metaphor for high school in general.

Lollipop Chainsaw is about a high school cheerleader who fights zombies with a chainsaw while carrying around the magically reanimated head of her boyfriend. No, that’s not a Mad Lib. That’s the actual premise of the game. Suda51 and Grasshopper Manufacture have gone into some strange territory before–No More Heroes and Shadows of the Damned have plenty of outlandish moments–but this represents an entirely new frontier of strangeness, and, yes, even stupidity. Luckily, the game is so ridiculous that it circles around and becomes almost a crass kind of genius.
| PROS | Humor, Soundtrack, Boss fights |
| CONS | Combat, Camera, Uncomfortable male gaze |
| WTF?! | It’d be easier to list the normal things in the game. |
The crazy plot of Lollipop Chainsaw is a real attention-grabber, but first impressions can be deceiving. The game isn’t really about running around a high school slicing through hordes of the undead. Only about a quarter of the adventure takes place in the cleverly named San Romero High, as protagonist Juliet Starling ends up chasing the rotting hordes from one end of the city to the other, through farms, a stadium, and even into the skies above. Gameplay is strictly linear, and operates similar to “stylish action” titles like Devil May Cry and Bayonetta.
On a purely fundamental level, combat is pretty standard. You need to decapitate your foes, but you have to stun them with weaker pom-pom attacks first, or simply just drop-kick them into a vulnerable state. Defeating enemies contributes to a meter which can be spent on a power boost akin to DMC‘s “Devil Trigger,” albeit with a much peppier accompanying soundtrack. You can spend the currency you loot from your enemies on statistical upgrades and more complicated combos, which offers incentive to rack up high scores and maximize the efficiency of your play-throughs. It’s a good thing there are upgrades to buy and high scores to earn too, as the game clocks in at a mere 6-8 hours.
The strength of the game’s structure is in its distinct levels and simple scoring system. Even if you blow through the game in a day, you’ll likely want to go back to your favorite part and try to beat it faster and with greater skill. Perhaps the biggest weakness to be had is the simple fact that the rudimentary action just never reaches the lofty heights of its fore-bearers, like the similarly orally-fixated Bayonetta. It seems as though we take the silky action of Platinum and Sony Santa Monica games for granted, as Lollipop Chainsaw‘s fighting is noticeably slow and ungraceful. Unfortunately, the low complexity of the combat, combined with its noticeable lack of smoothness, means this isn’t really a game you’ll want to play for the zombie slaying action.
Luckily, there is quite a bit more fun to be had. Variety comes in the forms of minigames like “Zombie Basketball,” in addition to Quick-Time Events involving the disembodied head of Juliet’s boyfriend, as well as sequences which require you to defend an objective with long-range weaponry. Moreover, each boss fight is modeled after a sub-genre of music, which makes for some quite memorable encounters. As long as you can put up with an occasionally sub-optimal camera placement, there are definitely things worth seeing between the stilted fights. Even if the core combat never really elevates itself from a tamer version of games that have come before it, the overall gameplay experience is an enjoyable one.
The real joy of a Suda51 joint isn’t really about complex combos, deep RPG elements, or thought-provoking characterization though. Lollipop Chainsaw is best enjoyed as a comedy, as it pokes fun at high school stereotypes, musical clichés, and the accumulated silliness of popular culture. There are plenty of jokes that don’t land, as well as out-dated references, but they are far outnumbered by the genuinely funny moments. Some of the gags require the player to have some knowledge of specific subjects (subtle references to Slayer and The Doors may go over the heads of many), but there are plenty of lowest-common-denominator punch lines.
Why do I envision Austin Y. wringing his hands hands while writing this review when I read lines like, “but those among us more sensitive to political correctness and/or problematic portrayals of women in media should consider themselves warned.”?
Sorry but I’ll pass. While I can appreciate this kind of meta, self deprecating, random for the sake of randomness-style if its done well, style only makes up for substance up to a certain point. While it might be a passable weekend rental, I just don’t see how anyone can justify a $60 price tag for it.
And I really liked Brutal Legend, too bad it was seemingly pushed out by EA before it was finished.
They didn’t justify a 60 dollar price tag. Most places I’ve seen it (Amazon, Toys R Us and I believe GameStop) have it for 45 dollars.
Well that does help a little. I just assumed that was the case since budget priced games (at launch) are a rarity these days. Even still that feels like too much in my opinion.
I’m a bit sad to hear about the gameplay. Oh well. I’m sure it’ll be fun enough. I’ll pick it up when I’m done with my current backlog.
I hate to be one of “those” Suda51 fans, but I kind of hope that this got fantastically silly action games out of his system. I love NMH. I still need to play Shadows of The Damned. But I honestly wouldn’t mind if he made another serious game like Killer7. It’s one of my favorites of all time. I hope his new game “The Killer is Dead” will be closer to that style. At least it looks like it from the little bit we know so far. Then again, it could change. Shadows of The Damned was a completely different game at one point.
But LPC looks fun and different. And I can always appreciate that.
You know, I may actually buy this game. I’m looking for something different and sometimes we all need a little insanity in our lives.
No people, you are all wrong. Don’t buy this game when it goes down in price. BUY IT NOW.
I can understand with big games like Mass Effect or Fable. They are GETTING enough money. Show some love for some of Suda’s games. Come on. It’s different, it’s got style…oh right, you guys just want to play a bland fantasy hack and slash or a 3d person space shooter masquerading as an RPG. Sigh.
Also, that slight against Brutal Legend? Uncalled for. XP I think it has taken its beating already.
Amazon had it up for $45, new, the day after launch so I decided to roll the dice and pick it up. =P
I can’t speak for everyone, but I don’t want dull fantasy hack and slash or shitty shooters disguised as shitty RPGs with shitty endings, but if they want to go with the spectacle-combat like DMC1,3,4 or Bayonetta.. they gotta have combat that’s actually on par with those games. Sadly, it looks like they slowed it down for the Space Marine crowd.
Come on. Space Marine? Really?
I agree with Sylveria, I think that game got a lot of unjustified love.
It was HORRIBLE.
it’s worth a play once its lower in price, I’d say 20-25 bucks tops.
“We wear our vaginas proudly!”? Well,I gotta get this game for sure…when its around $20.
It’s really sad to hear what I gleaned from the trailers was accurate: the combat was sluggish an dull, especially in the shadow of Bayonetta. I was really hoping it was just bad trailer production.
Glad I resisted the urge to pre-order it.. though I may still pick it up in short order since the price is already dropping.
I’m a bit sad to hear that LPC was sluggishly designed as well. I’m a fan of Suda51, and I was kind of hoping this would be Grasshopper’s answer to Bayonetta. I guess not.
Managed to get pass the farm level, and I’m still loving the game so far. Everything about this game just makes me giddy with excitement when playing it. However, with that said I can’t stand those football zombies. Everytime I get up they just knock me back down.
Ouch to say that to Brutal Legend. As for this game I can’t wait even thought there’s been some mixed reviews about this game.

Oh Suda51, why can’t you make a game that DOESN’T control like crap?
Stupid, over-the-top, and shameless. It’s everything we expected and it’s AWESOME!
Music Mondays revisits the band that brought us tunes from Scott Pilgrim vs. the World and Bit.Trip Runner.
It is truly an excellent rental. Methinks that’s all it ever hoped to be at four hours. Worth the price of admission at redbox.
yet another mediocre zombie hack and slash IN ADDITION to shoddy Kinect controls and no replay value? Sounds like a good use of 60 dollars to me!
Eh… it’s an okay game. The controls aren’t great, but the soundtrack is AWESOME, and the goofy premise is somewhat amusing. I do agree with Sage to a degree, but have to say that this game is a must-rent. I can’t see buying it for full price in the near future, but I had a good day and a half of fun with the game. (And, it FINALLY made me get around to playing Shadows of the Damned.)
Why is everyone blaming Suda for the bad jokes and silly writing? James Gunn wrote and directed it. Suda just produced it.
Yeah… but it’s not like his other games had better writing than this…
I don’t think he would have made this game if it did had better writing though. Gunn and 51 seem to be on the same wave lenght here
I can’t speak for Shadows of The Damned (I haven’t played it) but Killer7 had an excellent story, though a complicated one. So does Flower, Sun and Rain and all his pre-NMH work. NMH is silly and over the top, but it does have some method to its madness. There’s nothing wrong with some silly dark comedy, after all.
That being said, I can’t pass final judgement on Lollipop until I play it. I just wanted to clairify who actually did the writing here.
Oh, Bennett. When will you ever review a game in a positive manner? Why bother buying or renting a game when the outcome is always the same? I’m getting so fucking tired of you pissing on every new title out there. Dead Space 2 was great for example but you still took a fat dump on it.
Quit doing what you’re trying to do and let Angry Joe review games instead. Sure, he can be negative on games too but at least he’s good at it. You’re just using a monotone voice talking over some gameplay vids. Ooh, cinema class right there.
Angry Joe REVIEWS games? I lump him in with the entertainment style of “reviewing” where it’s more oriented towards jokes and skits than actual hard reviewing. Bennett is one of the few people on this entire site that does actual, in depth, reviews for games rather than just lumping everything about the game into stock categories.
Tara Strong really makes no effort to EVER do a voice other then the Rikku one does she…?
Raven, Timmy Turner, and Kaede disagree.
And there’s also Terrance from Foster Home for Imaginary Friends. (it’s better than it sounds.)
And along with that (which you really need to watch in order to fully understand), you have the- I’m pretty sure I’m not exaggerating here- two hundred plus other voices she’s done.
Yeah, I think she does put some effort into her other voices. And if you researched a little into voice acting and how they make the voices, you might be able to see why she has a similar voice, since they have kinda similar personalities and as such that translates to similar voices in the voice acting biz.
…
I feel like a huge nerd, now.
Yes, if you look on this game at a critical Standpoint it is crap, but Killer7, No More Heroes and Shadows of the Damned also are crap then and yet I love them, I love all of them.
No More Heroes now may be one a lot of people like.
I played it with a friend and we only played for 7 Hours until we were through, but yet in those 7 hours there wasn´t a single Scene or a single Moment where we weren´t laughing or having tons of fun.
So yes it has a short duration and the camera can be rather annoying, but the experience we had was worth the full price.
Yeah but how many specifics do you remember? It’s just one joke after the other with no juxtaposition and in that way it’s kinda like COD (more imaginative but still) [and yes I can see the hate from here for that analogy]at the beginning you get a big explosion ride that stops at bout 5-6 hours and the whole package is a mush because of it when you don’t give your audience a time to breathe.
I consider Shadows one of his better works (even though one can see the siccor marks at the end) because it didn’t have just the dick jokes and the vulgarity. It was a parody done right because when the game slowed down with the jokes it allowed itself some character development. You can have that in a parody, too. That’s what distinguishes a parody from a great one like a Scream (pick any entry after the first) from a Monty Python, a Lesley Nielson Movie or Silence of the Hams.
In one of my earlier comments I said that with some tweeks this could be great. But as it stands it’s just a ride that has thrown so much at me at the same time that I couldn’t finish it in one sitting due to over stimulation, the sheer stupidity of some of the dialouge and those blatantly missed design choices. When it comes to designing your gamemechanics you can have great mechanics and design with small budget and Grasshopper always gets the latter right but makes frequent missstepps in the former.
And saying it’s supposed to be like that for some kind of trashy feel, well ok, but then don’t tell me this game is good, great or awesome if someone at the design table said to himself “ok how can I make this more obnoxious to get my artsy point across” A game should be fun and give the player the tools to enjoy themselves and not cripple them while playing. It can be artsy and provocative and retro or a parody and you don’t need a big budget for it if you and your team work efficiently and with a focus and I think, that that is what Suda san is missing.
“That’s what distinguishes a parody from a great one like a Scream (pick any entry after the first) from a Monty Python”
Woah, I could not disagree more. Scream is stupid, but Monty Python? Awesome.
I can see what you are thinking though, the constant stream of jokes in Monty Python and the Holy Grail prevents any real character development to actually happen but consider this, THAT WASN’T THE POINT of the movie.
If you are looking for something more in the movies like Monty Python it’s not hard to find. Many jokes in The Holy Grail for example were a reflection on life in that era dealing with many diverse ideas. Watch the part with the peasants in the mud and tell me you don’t get the political humor there.
*first I ment Scary Movie sorry for that(see post below)
*But you still cared about the characters in a Monty Python movie, was it Holy Grail or Life of Brian.
*I know that character developmet wasn’ the strong point in holy grail (and it’s funny I listed a bunch of other movies and you jumped to holy grail though I just wrote Monty Python
The point was in this answer to Flumpor and a bit to what kefke_wren wrote: just because your parodying something that is bad doen’t mean you have to make your game bad to prove a point. If you want to say QTEs are stupid how a bout make a sequence were I as player think i’ll have to do it with a QTE and instead just let me do it on my own without it.
Don’t make excuses for a mediocre designed game because it this or that director or the budget, There a beautiful Indie games out there with great design and mechanic because those don’t cost a dime. It’s all in the head of the devs to think of fun and good mechanics. And I’m not bashing on the combat, it soso never dead was worse. And implementing some mechanics into a game to be bad and say it’s a parody thats a lame excuse for not having good though out mechanics.
Coming back to character development. It doesn’t have to be huge.Even a vacant eye bimbo slaying zombies can have some other quality than that and her short skirt and to like shopping. Like I said I liked Shadows a great deal even though it was short and had all the stupid jokes in it. Because of some details in the gameplay that characterized garcia above the grind house anti heros stereo typ or how you wanna call it. I could get into his desire to help his girl his angre with flemming and his friendship with jonson and the game didn’t have a bigger budget nor much more maturity than this title. (And it’s not that my game protagonist has to be a hero, i enjoyed Kane and Lynch a great deal )And when you look for example at the naked gun. It’s a parody alright. But at it’s core it’s a standard movie with the 3 act plot, character developments etc. and the humor is just on top of it. It’s not trying to be a parody it’s trying to be a movie which happens to be a parody. So please don’t get this wrong, I like SUDA san and his work but is it such a blasphemy for a paying consumer to ask that he stepps up his game and gets a bit more serous at what he’s doing? Don’T try to make a parody try to make a good game that’s also a parody (see Bayonetta)
* sorry ment Scary move 2 – ??? compared to Monty Python etc…
I fully agree. While not the most polished technically Suda’s games do more for me than a polished triple A title.
I guess you could compare it to big budget blockbusters in movies. Those are big and have state of the art CGI but are more likely thematically and substantially void of any stimulus beyond the superficial level. In contrast is the indie movie maker, or the smaller movie maker which creates movies of lesser technical finesse and on a significantly lower budget but create more meaningful and thought provoking pictures.
Suda’s games (while not indie exactly)are similar in my eyes. The games he creates don’t have the highest tech or best production values but he creates something that’s different.
But his games are rough. Design wise and technically and I don’t blame anyone for not liking the game because of that. It’s certainly a matter of taste.
Like you said, every one has a right to their opinion and I share most of yours (I try to make this one short). Most Triple A games bore me to death, but I just can’t agree with the POV that as long as a game stands out it’s great and can’t be debated. By this logic a game like Mindjack would be great too because of low budget and interessting premis. (And yeah out of boredome I played this one too ^^” It was funny at first but later on just terrible) I like to go out and buy some unknown little title like nier or resonance of fate and I got pleasently surprised and I bought garbage like mindjack and got dissapointed ( and yeah and I knew review score before hand so my own fault for thinking they were wrong) All I want to say in th end that every game should be judged by it’S own merrits and not by the devs rep.
*little addendum
I was at an art exibition and there was a let’s call it a piece of art, a canvas covered in one solid colour( i think it was beige or red don’t remember) and the title was blue bird. Thats neither art nor thought provoking, its a work of a tosser. I could do this. Everyone could do this particular piece. But it was high revered because it had some big name attached to it. Saying, I made my game obnoxious on purpose so you can think about it is kinda on the same level. It’s not edgy or thought provoking, it’s annoying and trying to find a deeper meaning in this is just grasping for straws because it’s a game from designer XY so it can’t be bad, it means something. No it doesn’t … it’s still “irritating”
Oh gosh, don’t get me started on people who have no idea talking about art, especially fine art which is what I’m getting some college level studying in.
Now I don’t know this particular piece you are talking about so I can’t offer anything to that but what I can say is this:
You know very little about fine art. No, you really don’t know a thing at all.
One of my favorite art movements was Russian constructivism (supremitism and futurism come close and are similar) and I’m sure if you saw pieces from that movement you would feel the same as you did with that “blue bird”. Not knowing the history, the significance, and exactly how much thought or what ideals went into making the pieces themselves.
Again I would say you are looking too superficaly at things.
Sorry couldn’t answer to you on your last comment.
Sorry that I have to disagree. I finished University this year and my second mayor was arthistory.
I don’t want to brag with it. It’s just that sometime an audience for an product makes it into someting that it isn’t. Some pieces of art are just art because someone said it’s supposed to be a piece of art. For me, an artist does something I nessecarily couldn’t reproduce like a Dhali a Klimt, a Pollock or a Turner just to cover some ground with styles and eras. Art that was produced in the last 10-20 years annoys me becaus in some cases(I’m not saying that in all cases, some post modern artist are great) you could go to their exihibit and mistake a fire extinguisher for a piece.
I was like that through Highschool and University, trying to over analyze everything but I stopped some time ago when I got older and this looking for some meaning where there probably isn’t one just for the sake of looking was kinda silly to me. SO I decided to use my knowledge of art and design and started to study at a game design school to put my knowledge to better use that to write essays about possible meaning.
I like to speculate how and why they did things they did the way they did, especially in movies (My BF was in computer sciences and Movie History as mayor and he taught me a lot) or games. But sometimes there is nothing more than a big name and pretenciousness.
It reminds me often of this one Simpson episode where Homer was an artist.
Yeah, I thought this game would be kinda bad. I mean, it seemed like it was trying to sell itself on its premise alone. I can’t think of too many good games that have done that.
I thought Shadows of the damned had great controls.
I disagree almost completely, but thats what opinions are for right?
i had more fun with this game than with the majority of games i played this generation.
Its a short, but fun trip. As for the controls, maybe im strange but i got used to them very quickly and after buying some combos it got much better (for me at least).
If you like games that stick out from the mass, go pick it up
What the hell is wrong with the people in these comments? All I see if perfectly reasonable arguments and problems with this game being stated and you all give thumbs down to said people!
I understand it was supposed to be edgy, but its not – its just bloomin’ stupid, their selling point is a busty blonde who you can occasionally (who am I kidding, all the time) see the panties of and frankly I feel that is the only reason half of you are sticking up for the damn game.
Its okay to love a developer but if they make a game that sucks just admit it, don’t defend them for their fuck up.
Because it’s suda 51 if you don’t fall in line and praise the shit out of it you’re a COD drone not able to see the genious at work.
After so many games the novelty, that suda is quirky has worn off and all of his great ideas amount to nothing more than throwing them at a wall and see if it sticks. problem is he can’t be bothered to see if it actually sticks and throws the next thing your way… ADHD thats what it is. Some more polish some less jerking around and the game would be great. I swear everytime I used the star power and “hey mickey” started to play I got pumped only to be pulled back to more grind.
BTW I think SEGA wants their zombies back. Those jerking clones were so badly animated and the polywork was so basic I swear they took them right out of House of the dead 2 (and yeah I actually went playing that game after finishing this one…lets say to unwind)
I think that you (and Bennett) missed the point of the game. It’s part homage, part satire. It’s not supposed to be good. The “badness” of the game harkens back to the B-movies of old, while taking some jabs at music, movies, games, and the industries that create them along the way. For an example, things like an overdone QTE sequence is, in the eyes of someone willing to take the joke, a parody. It’s just some lighthearted poking fun at how gaming has come to rely on these sequences for literally everything…all presented in a silly little dance sequence that tells you, yes, it’s okay to laugh at this.
I disagree with some of your points, but overall I can understand why people may have a problem with this game. I’m on the side of LotusPrince, that I’m kinda used to the terrible controls, and thoroughly enjoyed the game despite several frustrating moments (Zombie Baseball pissed me off so much I turned of auto aim as it was more of a hindrance).
That’s the point. The game is a fun experience as all of Suda51′s games, but not for the solid gameplay. It’s decent but come on, play some Bayonetta then try Lollipop Chainsaw and come back and tell me that there isn’t a huge gap in the quality of the gameplay department.
And finally the swearing…gosh… that was annoying and grading. Don’t get me wrong I dont have anything against the use of cusses in games but I find it funny that Batman got his ass whooped for some of those words, though they were used sensibly and here were it’s cranked up to 11 no one give a damn.
I just have one question to the male players of this game. Do you even realizes what a horrible person Juliet is? She activly emasculates her boyfriend. Not just by chopping up his head but making a boytoy out of him spinning and twirling him while he complains coz it’ fun, right? And she loves him so much… so much in fact that she whats to make a purse or a ipod case out of his head. You know because it’s the coolset thing ever to have a decapitated head as boyfriend. Her sister tossing him around. No one take him serously and when he tells her she should leave him there because he’s had enough and that he thinks she horrible and crazy (goes for the whole family) and that he wants her to kill him or put in a trash can or mail box she refuses. he wants to break up and she just desides “no” he’s got no say in it what so ever. Funny thing, and I know many of you will get this whole comment the wrong if I say that I’m a woman gamer, and will tell me that I’m feminist or something. I was bored to death with the mysoginist slurs because they were so childish and immature that after an hour I stop listening. What really pissed me of was the relationship between Juliet and Nick. I really felt sorry for him and wanted this obnoxious b**** to kill herself. All of Suda 51 games a macho, masculinity paired with retro and nostalgia, and I see the similarities this game wanted to create to house of the dead or crazy taxi but honestly those mechanics were stripped from those games from 2001. I can appreciate the effort but I would have rather played those again than LC. The thing is this game is SUDAs answer to all the macho fantasys and nostalgia fests he made this far, this is “Girl Power”, or his version of it and it blows. It’s so demeaning to males that I feel sorry.
When they first announced this game I was like awesome BuffyxBayonetta, just crazy this game is a must buy. I didn’t have the money to buy it this month so I rented and boy I am glad. Bayonetta is as Hack and Slash games go far better. And if you’re looking for childish gore Splatterhouse is way better than this, it knows what it is. And for a better Suda 51 game, play Shadows of the Damned it has Johnson in it.
“It’s so demeaning to males that I feel sorry.”
The fact that you really think that depresses me.
Thanks for that. It actually made me laugh.
When games are attacked by feminists male gamers tend to get very angry, like women are trying to take away your favourite toy because women in games are sexualized. And Juliet is exactly that but that’s not the offensive part about her. Whats offensive is that she’s a female Edward: “gorgeous” looking, clingy, knows best whats good for his/her lover without asking.
Here is some1 saying, hey guess what this girl is objectified in this game but dudes are being objectified, also. You know, equal rights?
And last Juliet is Sudas first female protagonist. Most of the male counterparts were mostly wish fullfilment on sudas part and as a first female protagonist in one of his games she blows on so many levels. Justsayin ” my sisters and I all wear our vaginas proudly”… yeah right
You are entitled to your opinion about the game but I have every right to consider your opinion wrong.
Juliette’s objectification is superficial while Nick’s is much more tormenting and character central.
There’s a message there but it’s not “This game objectify’s men! How horrible!”
I’m not saying it’s horrible^^ I find it funny that when women get objectified like that some femnazi will come along and complain and the dudes will defend it.
In this case many ppl defend the game either because it’s a SUDA 51 game or because of Juliets short skirt. They find her sexy and atractive and thats fine. But would I be a man playing that game with that intent in mind that I like this game cause of her short skirt to put it bluntly and have seen how she treats this guy, this would bust my bubble and all my disbelief and enjoyment out of the game. It’s like in one second “yeay juliet your so hot, you’re just the way a game chick’s gotta be” to “OMG you psycho b**** get away from me” For me all wood would be gone. you understand what I’m trying to say? It’s like in Uncharted Nate would suddenly hit Elena or something then my appreciation would go from “I love this guy” to “I loathe this guy”
For me seeing juliet like this, was like she was literally castrating the poor dude, first physically and then on a personal level. I was just wondering if none of the dudes playing this game felt threatend by this like they do when a femnazi implies that this game is sexist.
Maybe it’s just my opinion but it’s funny to see “real life women “trying to take away mens rights to scandaly clad women in games” are bad “women in games taking mens masculinity ok as long as they have short skirts” fascinating…
I couldn’t reply to your last comment so I’m hitting reply here again.
I think the game subverts people’s expectations on the issue of objectification. Through adverts and game footage you would think it would objectify women (though when you see the presentation and experience the writing you know to take that with a grain of salt) but when it’s the actual male character objectified in such an over the top way you know it’s intentional and for a purpose.
Funny thing is first you thought my beef with this particular part of the game was stupid and now we’re kinda analyzing it.
But for what purpose? She makes nick into a purse/accesoire. So the moral are that all vapid bimbos are just manhaters? That women view men as attachments and not as ppl? Help me out there because I can’t see the parody in it. Especially considering the ending. Don’t worry I won’t spoil the ending but let’s just say it’s a mama knows best ending, where juliet hasn’t learned anything, she got her way. And the way Nick wabbles after her like a little puppy like nothing ever happend. He was pissed at her and frustrated for what she did and now its ok.
And btw that reminds me of another similarity between Shadows and LC, both protagonists have a dissembodied head but in contrast to nick, johnson floats, he’s a demon, independent and could leave garcia whenever he wanted. Nick can’t. And though Johnson is being objectified in every way ( as object and pun) he stands his ground and they are equal buddies. In this relationship the dynamic isn’t that of equal but a spoiled Femdom, which is used to getting what she wants (symbol for independet women perhaps? jap. gov. was arguing that sexually forward girls like juliet turn yound males gay) and her boytoy. Just another aspect why I think Johnson, as a side kick and a dissembodied head is a much more well rounded character than Nick, who due to his position doesn’t have much say in it what is going to happen to him.
“Funny thing is first you thought my beef with this particular part of the game was stupid and now we’re kinda analyzing it.”
I thought you actually believed that this game was sexist against men. Which it isn’t.
I don’t think it’s sexist against men per se. I think that Juliet as characters go is despicable. Personally I hate women like her so maybe I’m jaded. But I was just wondering how no one seemed to notice that. At video games awesome and some other review site this game got praised and even the bad reviews didn’T mention it nor did I hear anything from ppl on forums. Like I said in one of my previous comments
“Maybe it’s just my opinion but it’s funny to see “real life women “trying to take away mens rights to scandaly clad women in games” are bad “women in games taking mens masculinity ok as long as they have short skirts” fascinating…”
Men would be up in arms about a real woman taking an issue with the game being sexist but when a fictional girl does it no one notices. Maybe they were distracted by her panties, I don’t know. When I saw this, it remembered me of the Breaking Dawn review were Doug Walker was really pissed at the poor depiction of men in this movie. Like the movie was saying “look girls this is how you’re man will behave when you get pregnant” in comparison to LC where “Look guys, girls are just manipulative, horrible ppl who will exploit you and don’t give a damn about what you want. You are gonna be a pet if you are in a relationship (men being like an attachment rather than a partner, a purse to buy all the nice thingsshe wants etc.)” I don’t know… just felt dirty afterwards. My boyfriend was watching me play and he was rather disgusted with Juliet, too. It was just the icing on the bimbo cake
I have to agree with you a 100%. This game looks good on paper but the execution is so so at best. And I played all of SUDA 51′s games. I would even dare to say that Shadows was way better because it was more focused and more to offer that Suda usually brings to the table due to Mikami sans involvement. Getting back to Lollipop chainsaw, this game is short and padded with gimmicky “special attacks” like the pole or vault with occur maybe 2 or 3 times each in the hole game(and oh well, Bayonetta had a pole dancing attack but gues what you could use it everytime an enemy droped it’s cane). Controls weren’t so good but weren’t aweful but the real thing buggy me here is that the game is always interuppted by something like the sparkle hunter or ANOTHER QTE. Those were obnoxious. As a whole this game just shows how much ADHD Sudas’s got. He makes basically always the same game with the excuse to not take it serously. The problem is he’s a professional designer and i as a customer want a good designed game and that means gamplay and story not just the artstyle and atmosphere coz these games got a ton. One example: the use of consumables. I played on PS3 and the lollipops were on the Dpad just the lollipops nothing else. The nick ticket is on L3 the stick I use all the time. You don’t wanna know how many tickets I wasted by mistake. Would have been such a trouble to put the lollipops on for example the right d pad and the ticket on the left or something? Just saying….
Question: How many of those handing out negative votes to everyone criticizing the game or saying the game is excellent at the top of the page actually played the game?
Mindless Self Indulgence. Aren’t they racist?
Actually They’re Quite the Opposite. Jimmy Urine is Hinted to be Openly Bi and Reportedly has kissed random fans in his concerts of both Genders.
Im sorry but weren’t you the same people that hated on games like Skyrim and Call of Duty saying that the gameplay was repetitive and dated and that’s what’s the most important in a VIDEO GAME the gameplay
But now you do a full 180 and are saying that the game is worth a full purchase just because for the writing
Wait, what?! Bennett never said that at all. He strongly discouraged even renting this title. What the hell are you talking about?
I was talking about the comenters not sage
Thats why i said “you people”
Wait, you think Skyrim and COD had good writing? Thought I’d never see the day.
I saw some art for this and thought it was a joke. This is a real game?
This looks horribly sexist.
Crying sexism over everything, yep you’re a follower of Sage. Though an obvious furry crying sexism is hilarious to me.
What does a person being a furry have to do with sexism?
A person can’t be furry but he/she can be hairy.
I’m not a furry. I have a character named Furrama. Used to be Furramon, but I un-digimoned it. I guess I like anthro animals okay, but not enough to be a furry.
I like Sage, he can be a bit misogynistic at times, but never in a mean spirited way. It’s usually played for laughs. He’s just so darned honest and well thought out and genuinely funny that you really can’t hate the guy, even if the material he’s on about is a little squicky. Plus I like the character he plays when he’s in Jesuotaku’s videos, whom I also really like, (and why I started watching his stuff at all).
I haven’t played the game. It looks sexist. It just does. The imagery speaks for itself, the lollipop, the outfits, the way she speaks, etc. No one else had said anything about it yet, all I did was point to the naked emperor. If you enjoy this sort of thing… well, I don’t particularly care for your tastes. I’ll never pay for this game or play it. That’s about it. /shrug
Really wish game renting was a thing over here, I really wanna play this, but at 60€, or even 40€ if ordering from abroad, there’s a LOT better uses for that kinda dough.
Just watch Video Games AWESOME play through it instead.
Honestly, I can’t fault Sage for criticising the game based on gameplay. It’s pretty terrible. I sure as hell wouldn’t play it. But damn if the game isn’t entertaining.
I have to say, I don’t see these control problems everyone mentions. It only took me a tiny bit to get the controls down, and while the combos may not be “essential” they are a ton of fun!
I’ve played through the entire game, and I loved almost every second.
I do have to admit though, that the game could have benefited from a proper booklet, and an actual explanation of what a “homing attack” is.
the
So in short, rent this or play a God of War game instead?
One of the few reviews Bennett did that I agree 100% to. The atmosphere is great, the characters are ridiculously over the top and fun, but the gameplay and level design are mediocre at best.
Just like No More Heroes, you don’t play for the quality of the gameplay, but for the insane story and characters and the self awareness Suda’s games have.
If you want a decent action game though, Bayonetta and even older DmC games are miles ahead of LC in almost every aspect.
Unique concept dosen’t make good game and this game is proof of that.
Wrong
In my opinion, the game doesn’t have to be great in order to be worth it.
There’s nothing to do after you beat the game?
No different endings to acquire?
There are two endings.
Nothing about the amazing soundtrack? You go from that Lollipop-song you played to freaking Children of Bodom and almost everything in between.
Made by the same guy who voices the Punk Rocker (Jimmy of MSI) so you know it’s made by a man on the same wave length as the game itself.
Always good.
A lot of screen tearing there…was that present throughout the game or just in those cut-scenes?
My only two major complaints with the game is the random sound glitches I encountered where Juliet & Nick’s exchanged Dialouge gets repeatedly looped to the point that it’s a jumbled mess. Also the “Sparkle Hunting” segments can be pretty distracting and when your in a crowded room full of Enemies.
My friends thoroughly enjoyed this game, and I suspect that I will as well. Suda 51 almost has his own genre at this point, so I figure that if I liked Killer7, No More Heroes 1 and 2, and Shadows of the Damned, then I’ll like this too. It’s more about the experience than it is about the core gameplay.
