Today, Nintendo has announced that their hot new game for the 3DS, New Super Mario Brothers 2 (aka Super Mario Coingasm) will only support local co-op through the entire campaign. The game will also keep the camera focused on whichever character is in the lead, forcing the other player to keep up so the screen does not push them.
Nintendo also released an announcement about a new mode, “Coin Rush” (no, seriously). This new mode give players a limited number of lives to get through the game and replaces 1UP mushrooms with caches of 50 coins. High scores will be saved in this mode and can be traded with other players via StreetPass. What are your thoughts on these announcements? Has Mario and Nintendo gone coin-crazy? The game will be released on August 19th of this year.

Nintendo really needs to get with the times. While I am all for local multiplayer, an online option should be there for people who don’t have anyone else to play with at the moment.
All I’ve seen out of Nintendo for E3 is they actively HATE the idea of people playing alone. You are gonna be surrounded by people and if you aren’t they’re gonna be drawing dicks all over your screen with pop-up messages.
Honestly, I probably wouldn’t enjoy online multiplayer anyway. Like with NSMB Wii, this kinda game isn’t as fun if the people aren’t right next to you.
Also, game looks cool, and Reznor’s back, which is awesome. Hoping to see the Wario Bros make an appearance, what with the coin focus and all.
A gamemode that is all about coins……. and that in this economical time! tssssk!
I personally have distaste with how Nintendo is cutting and pasting these new super Mario bro games. Alright I’m fine with one on the Wii U but another on the 3DS? Couldn’t they have at least put maybe a year between announcing these separate games? Not that these games are bad, but I’d rather see a Mario on wii with a bit more thought in them. Let’s face it these games are cash-ins.
They are meant to be system sellers, and 2D Mario sells more than 3D Mario. Plus, the “all about the gold” thing is the first time that a 2D Mario ever had focus around anything other than just the platforming. I’m intrigued to see what they do with the concept.
I personally have a distaste with how people complain about two new Mario games.
I would understand if the games were bad, but they’re not. They’re not even all the same like so many people seem to claim.
There’s no difference between a new 3d platformer and an old throw back to classic 2d platforming?
Big deal. I was never was a big fan of online co-op for platformers. I can understand other genres but platformers…online co-op just doesn’t sound…natural.
It’s understandable, though disappointing. It is a very Japanese mindset that local multiplayer is more important, at least when it comes to portables (of corse there are lot moe people in a smaller amount of space). Hopefully they won’t use this idea when they release Mario U.
I wasn’t expecting the 3DS game to do it, but you hope the Wii U version has it. Rayman Origins has some form of Online Communication, I hope that one does to.
Also, if this game is Coin Crazy, do you think Wario will be a playable character in it?
It doesn’t seem like Wario will be playable, but some have speculated that he’s involved in the plot. If that’s true, I may have to buy this game after all!
