Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance Slashes Its Way Onto PC
Because Hideo Kojima heard that Johnny M. played a Metal Gear game.

There were plenty of games at this year’s E3 that had questions surrounding them. Of the games actually at the show, there were few others that had as many question marks as Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance. With the game being in development hell and handed over to a new development team, how would it look? How would it play? Would it be in shambles? Would it ever release? Having played the game, I can confidently say that it’s in good hands with Platinum Games.
The demo I played through was more or less the tutorial level in which the game teaches you the various mechanics you’ll be using throughout. Revengeance has the typical Platinum Games’ action flair and fluid controls, but also introduces a few unique mechanics for the game. The first of these being Ninja Run. By holding the R1 button Raiden will start sprinting and have the ability to deflect incoming bullets and scale obstacles. You can use this to either jump up high walls or run over smaller objects like cars and boxes.
The second of these mechanics is called Blade Mode. If you’ve been following Revengeance you’ll know this free cutting mechanic is the main idea behind the game. Essentially you’re allowed to cut just about anything in the levels, including enemies and environmental objects. This is done by holding down the L1 button (which slows down time) and you can slice away by aiming with the left analog stick and cutting with the right. It may sound a bit odd, but it controls so beautifully once you try it out.
Being a fan of Platinum Games, I was fairly confident that they would do an awesome job with this game. That being said, I was not prepared for how much Revengeance blew me away. Your game can have awesome graphics, a great story, and nice music, but at the end of the day I play video games to have fun. As many great games as there were at E3, there was no other game I had more fun playing than Revengeance. The controls were silky smooth, the action was fluid, the new mechanics worked really well, and I didn’t want to stop playing. They literally had to make me leave because I wouldn’t stop playing.
I won’t describe the demo in detail, as you can watch the very demo I played above. However, I will share my one concern for the game, which is that I feel it’s going to be too short. I beat Vanquish in about 5 hours, and Bayonetta doesn’t take much longer at around 6-7 hours. While you can’t measure quality by hours played, I’d like to get at least 8 hours from the main campaign, if not also a few extra modes. This might sound odd for an action game, but I would actually really enjoy a horde mode. Endlessly slicing waves of enemies into pieces sounds like a blast to me.
One other thing, I would take my opinion with a grain of salt. I’ve never played through any Metal Gear Solid game (blasphemy!), so I don’t really have any strong feelings one way or another concerning this being spin-off. However, as a huge fan of action games, I will say this game is a total blast and brings something new to the table. If you’re looking for a game with pure action, amazing controls, and a little something different, then you won’t be disappointed.
Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance will release in early 2013 for Xbox 360 and PS3. What are your thoughts on the game? Are you excited? Is this a disgrace to the Metal Gear series? Share all your thoughts and comments with us below.
Taylor’s love of the PSP flourished during his 1 year stay in South Korea. Whether it be on the subway, bus, or long walks on the beach, the PSP’s allure grew in Taylor’s heart. When he’s not playing games, he enjoys playing the guitar, making videos, and trying to learn the words to various KPOP songs. Favorite game of this generation: Uncharted 2: Among Thieves. Favorite game of all time: Persona 4.

“Raiden faces off against the mighty Mastiff unit in a subterranean labyrinth. Also, ponchos.” OK Konami, you’ve got me. You’ve got me.

GAMEPLAY SHOWCASE
“What’s this?” you might ask. This is basically a 20-30 minute video of straight unedited gameplay with commentary showcasing a small segment of the game and it’s various other aspects. Hopefully this will give you a better sense of what the experience is like as it can be hard to tell sometimes in edited reviews. I hope you enjoy!

Anything Platinum Games touches turns into greatness.
There’s not much else I can add that has not already been said other than good job PG and Konami.
That TMNT reference, What.The.Fuck? o_0
The game might very well be 60fps but this video ain’t. I would have loved this game on the Vita. It would have probably sold extremely well considering it has no friggin’ competition. On consoles/PC though I think I’m gonna skip it. I was a huge fan of MGS1 you see, and I loved every second of MGS2′s tanker chapter and then…
I loathe Raiden.
Taylor, Raiden’s voice actor is none other than Quinton Flynn. Not only has he provided Raiden’s voice for every Metal Gear Solid game the character is in, he’s also well-known for:
Reno in Final Fantasy: Advent Children & Crisis Core
Henry from the No More Heroes games
Axel and then Lea for the Kingdom Hearts games
Dr. Riddles from Zatch Bell! (both the anime and subsequent video games)
Kolyat Krios from Mass Effect 2 & 3
Just to name a few. Quinton Flynn is an amazing voice actor!
I really want to play this game
They should call the sequel “Revengeavenganence: The Revengening”.
Played through the Story once and now giving at a rest for a while before going back to play it on Hard.
Had a blast, since I actually really liked Raiden in MGS 2 and 4.
Platinum already announced a bunch of DLC, like the Solid Snake Wooden Sword (imbued with the Spirit of the Legendary Soldier), several VR misssions and two new Story DLC’s focusing on Jetstream Sam and Blade Wolf. Both will most likely be playable, too.
Whatever may come, I’m looking forward to it.

Raiden returns… next year.
There were fewer games at E3 that had as many questions surrounding them as Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance. There also wasn’t any game I had more fun playing.
Welcome back to the discussion show where we introduce the debate and you continue it. This week’s topic: Shaun and Johnny Maloney discuss the past & future of Star Wars video games.
I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t a bit disappointed with how this game ended up turning out in terms of just sheer ridiculousness, but god damn it looks fun to play.
Looks awesome! I hope there will be no trouble with navigating through levels in this game, like in so many similar titles.
Ever since I played MGS1, I wanted to play as a cyborg ninja and slash my way around. Then 2010 came. And the first trailer for Rising. And the tech demo. I was as happy as a kid in a candy store. And then it went all quiet, until last year’s E3 when Rising changed into Revengeance. I really didn’t like the changes Platinum Games made from the original concept. Another year passed and another E3 came. I saw the new trailer and the gameplay demo and I’ve got to admit, I’m blown away. I can’t wait for March to slice and dice my way through Revengeance.
I’m so pumped for this! I’ll probably pre-order this one!
While I -am- a fan of the Metal Gear series, I think people just have to face that this is not a Metal Gear Solid game, no tactical spionage action here. The Solid series is over because Solid Snake’s story was over in Guns of The Patriots Kojima literally made him Old Snake in that game so that there couldn’t be any other sequels after that). This is an spin-off, hell, perhaps a new sub-franchise, who knows? If people accept this as the new approach to the MG series, then I don’t see why it can’t do well. Besides, it’s Platinum Games we’re talking about here. If someone can make a good action game out of a cyborg ninja, it’s THEM.
