Zevran Arainai and the Importance of Sex and Intimacy, 10.0 out of 10 based on 1 rating
Sex and intimacy from a character that skirts stereotype.
NOTE: The following contains spoilers. You have been warned.
Intimacy is a difficult mountain to climb in video games. Years of hyper sexuality and pixelated pandering have given the culture a stigma when regarding sex and relationships. Most of the time it becomes a contrived plot device for game writers to use, but even then these relationships never go anywhere. But sex and sexuality go hand in hand, because intimacy between people is always more about the individuals and their affection with each other, over the superficiality we typically see.
But there is still hope for intimacy and sexuality to grow beyond the physical. Having characters in video games caring for each other through both troubled and touching relationships is a key to seeing sex in video game becoming a non-issue. And this is where Zevran Arainai, from Dragon Age: Origins, comes into play, as Zevran is a strong example of how sexuality can be done correctly in a mainstream game.
Zevran is an assassin from the country of Antiva, a country notorious for their ruthless assassin guild, The Crows. Zevran and his comrades were employed by Teryn Loghain to kill the player character, known as the Grey Warden, and his companions around the halfway point of Origins, but fail in their mission. After the battle, you have the option of interrogating and recruiting Zevran, and from this we get the first taste of his wit.
Zevran is an entertaining character because he acts like a cross between Ricardo Montalban and Stephen Colbert. His accent is somewhat hypnotic and oozes with sensuality, and his deadpan innuendos and off-color party banter easily make him among the funniest and most robust characters in the party. He is also unabashed by his own past; he makes no bones about being a trained killer and even reflects on his past deeds with a bit of glee. One of the many party banter sections has Zevran deflect the insisting of the elder mage Wynne that he is attempting to atone for his actions by working with the Warden.
Zevran does not hide what he is, at least when you first meet him. Throughout the game Zevran is the least judgmental of the companions, and this is mostly due to his upbringing. He is the son of an elven whore and a woodcutter and grew up with prostitutes until he was sold into The Crows. Because of this he has no scruples when it comes to sex and innuendo, which can explain his more open and wanton sexual advances to the Warden, male or female.
So at first, Zevran comes across as a typecasted character, a rogue that is all about freedom and sex and innuendo, one who has no depth other than wisecracks or even attempting to love. His taste for comfortable things and blatant pandering is a result of his upbringing for sure, but beneath the surface of what we see lies a more complex being, one that, as an individual, is truly more compassionate than meets the eye.
As a bi-sexual I admit to rolling my eyes when I heard that this option existed. When I played through it I realized just how good bioware were at writing Zeveran as a funny saucy character who makes no bones about having fun but is confused when he finds himself really caring for the warden. It’s a shame they lost that knack in Dragon Age 2, only to regain it in Mass Effect 3. I would like to thank Bioware for actually being one of the only companies to approach this with such skill, other companies have done it but only superficially (origin in the ultima series allowing for gay prostitution but no romance). On the other hand they have to stop putting a gay love choice in every game they make otherwise they run the risk of just going “oh we need a gay guy…” that would ruin it for me. I’m not saying don’t put them in if they are well written but don’t just put them in because you want a gay choice, make sure they make sense.
Zevram was an amoral feller and -quite honestly- the last guy I’d want to screw if I had homosexual inclinations in the DA universe. He was exotic,I’ll give you that, but just because you grew up in a whorehouse where you were cornholed Venetian-style by the clientele doesn’t automatically make you a “great character”.
He’s likable, skillful and all around a fun guy to have in your party, besides that when you get past the superficial aspect of the relationship he shows insecurity and doubt for the first time in his life. He admits to being confused by his emotions but that he still loves you. That is what makes him a good character he isn’t just the cliche there is a character beneath it.
i don´t care for such themes in video games. Imho it´s almost impossible to do this with any kind of real meaning aside of plotpoint and/or mass effect esque fap material for 12 year olds. It would be something different if you´d make a Heavy Rain like game around a relationship. I see how that could work but other than that, why? Why would someone want to PLAY a relationship? Gaming always was about things you couldn´t do in real life….oh well that explains alot
That’d be like asking, why watch a movie about a guy living an average life and it’s about him just dealing with feeling like nothing is better in life? Or listen to a song that talks about the troubles and hardships? Or read a book about some love story of two people? Playing a game doesn’t always have to be a super fantasy, it can also just give you a point of view or just an experience. Also it’s an RPG, being able to ship your character is part of another shaping of who you want your character (or yourself if you reaaaly wanted) to be. Besides who would want to ‘PLAY’ with a real human’s emotions just to test what’s it like to encounter someone different, that seems more malicious and weird. Gaming is about a lot of things if your view on games is limited to what you want them to be, why bother asking if you can’t understand or comprehend the reasons of the ‘why’?
just curious. I romanced him with both male and female Warden…for some reason for me, a male warden felt more real, but that is my own biased on it I guess.
What constitutes a good character? Join me in this series that attempts to look at these characters and tries to peel away the layers of depth they have. Join me as we find Characters with Character. This week is Zevran Arainai.

Was I the only one upset that you couldn’t get Zevran clothing/armor that would make him resemble Link?
one word for you: Mods
You just made me feel like a monster for only doing him for a trophy……… don’t judge me
male or female warden?
in male playthrough first time playing, was planning recently to pick up the game again, why the question? XD

maybe its because he extends the romance dialogues with you when you romance him with a male
