Though they have never been shown on any map, there was once a small group of islands in the middle of the ocean. With maritime provinces in the north and smaller islands in the south, the islands were home to peaceful people who lived in tranquility for many, many years. At some time (no one knows exactly when) a group of Evil Pigs appeared and disrupted the islands with their powerful, twisted magic. Flowers withered and birds disappeared, while strange plants and animals took their place. Underlings of the Evil Pigs, called Koma Pigs, played mischievous pranks on the helpless inhabitants of the islands. A young boy named Tomba was born on one of the islands ruled by the Evil Pigs. Raised by his grandfather, the curious, energetic Tomba played and hunted in the wilderness. When his grandfather passed away, Tomba took great care to protect his grandfather's grave and never removed the gold bracelet his grandfather gave to him. One day, Tomba's cherished bracelet was stolen by a Koma pig. Thus begins Tomba's adventure... and yours. As Tomba sets out into this strange land he will encounter many things that he does not understand. Through his adventures, Tomba will grow, gaining experience and new skills. And perhaps he will capture the Evil Pigs, restoring the natural beauty of these unknown islands.

Tomba Tossing a Koma Pig

How can so much pink not be girly? Tomba! That's How!

When I’ve spoken about MonkeyPaw Games here, here, and here, I was always referring to their work with Class of Heroes 2. However, for the past few weeks on MonkeyPaw Games’ Twitter account, they’ve been hinting at another game they were working on other than Class of Heroes 2. Today, Joystiq broke the news that MonkeyPaw Games will be releasing the cult PS1 classic Tomba! on the PlayStation Network.

Tomba! was directed and produced by Tokuro Fujiwara, a notable former member of Capcom who worked on the Mega Man games, and created the infamous Ghosts ‘N Goblins series. After leaving Capcom, he formed his own studio called “Whoopee Camp“, and created Tomba! for Sony. The original Playstation game was a 2D Platformer that became somewhat of a cult classic, and was well received enough to also get a sequel. Unfortunately, Whoopee Camp went defunct in 2000, and today Tokuro Fujiwara works at Platinum Games with fellow Capcom alumni: Shinji Mikami.

But thanks to the efforts of the MonkeyPaw Games, Tomba! will be coming back via the Playstation Network to the North American market in the near future. When talking with Joystiq, President of MonkeyPaw Games, John Greiner, had this to say:

John Greiner
“Sony and MonkeyPaw have a good working relationship. I think they appreciate the titles we’ve brought to the Store. And they value the support we give the games. Having a plethora of Japanese content is a distinct advantage PlayStation has over Xbox. But the games still need to be brought Stateside. So our model helps Sony spread their Japanese edge and we help Japanese developers get their titles to a wider audience. Hence, Sony is willing to work with us on titles that may not have otherwise been licensed out. Support is key.

The Joystiq article also explains that getting Tomba! to the Playstation Network was not easy for MonkeyPaw Games. What’s more, how well Tomba! sells on the North American Playstation Network could determine whether or not the game’s sequel, Tomba! 2: The Evil Swine Return, will get a Playstation Network release outside of Japan as well.

John Greiner
“We often have to chase down multiple right holders. In this case, Sony and Whoopee Camp had rights that needed to be negotiated. Tomba! 2 is a possibility but we need to really sell Tomba! 1 well before we can extend our relationship. It’s the first time to work with Fujiwara-san so we’re trying to make a good impression. Good sales have a way of opening doors a bit wider.”

I for one welcome the opportunity to beat the snot out of some Evil Swine overlords. I’m eager to find out more details, and with E3 just around the corner, hopefully MonkeyPaw Games will shed some more light on when we can see Tomba!, how much it will cost, and any other surprises they might have up their sleeves.

Now we just need Mega Man Legends on the PSN. Yes, I know I’m being too hopeful, knowing Capcom.

Well, I’ve already told half of my friends to buy it. I played a good amount of it on a PS1 demo thingy at Toys R Us, many, many years ago. Always wanted to buy it, but by the time I had a system it would run on (a PS2,) it had gone the way of the wind.

Seems like this will be another one out of 5000 games that’s only released on the American and Japanese market while us Europeans are beeing left out in the dust.
I dont know why Sony hates us so much cause i really really wanted to play this game again.

I definitely understand where you’re coming from on this one as I’ve been putting a lot of thought why releases like this can’t be international.

Part of the reason I think is because MonkeyPaw Games doesn’t have an establishment in the European region, and therefore can’t really control releases there. Furthermore, given that it took them a year to work out everything between Sony and Tokuro Fujiwara plus the former folks of Whoopee Camp, it might be just as complicated to get it released in the EU.

What would need to happen is for someone specializing in Japanese game releases to take the time and effort to negotiate the terms to get it released there. Since I’m USA based, I can’t say who unfortunately, but who knows?

Perhaps if it sells well enough in the USA, someone in the EU will step up and take a shot?

I’m ashamed to admit I missed this back in the PS1 days, glad to see I’m getting a chance to correct that mistake. Looking forward to the release

So it’s only a digital re-release? Dang, I was hoping for a sequel.

Well if enough people purchase it, it will improve the chances of getting the sequel digitally re-released. :)

I always wanted to play this, now I have the chance if I buy a US PSN card. It’s moments like this which make me wish PSN accepted Paypal so I didn’t have to buy overpriced PSN cards because it doesn’t accept my Debit card, being British and all. While Tomba did get a European release, European PSN PS one section is severely lacking in games full stop. Plus Sony seems to refuse selling US games on there because they’re only in English. Apart from the few import games.
