Persona 4 Arena: Official Design Works Gets North American Publisher
UDON comes through again.

Hello Fight Fans and Atlus Junkies! Today, Atlus USA has released a tutorial video for Persona 4 Arena. The video (narrarated by Teddie and Rise’s Elglish voice actors) explains the combat system and shows off the characters in action. As a casual fighting fan, it seems to me like the system will be easy enough to pick up for less experienced players but features like SP attacks (which feature spells from the game) and strategically using the “awakened states” (a state all fighters achieve after dropping to low health) should add some complexity. Since a majority of our writing staff are Persona 4 fans, this is a game we’ve had our eye on for some time. So without further ado, let’s watch the vid:
As the trailer shows, the characters look gorgeous (no doubt thanks to Arc System Works involvement) and the animation is very smooth. This is also only the first tutorial video released by Atlus so expect more to come out in the following weeks.
So fans, what do you think so far? Be sure to comment below and keep following Blistered Thumbs for more information on this title. Persona 4 Arena will be out on August 7, this year.

After seeing this video I really want to play this… unfortunately Zen United still seems to have way to much trouble to cope with the scale of the project (or it’s licensors for that matter) in order to release it here in Europe.
And thanks to this beeing the only PS3 game in existence with a region-lock… *sigh* T_T
I have to disagree with your critique of the story mode. I very much so like that, with one or two exceptions, they did not try to force fights into this just because it’s a fighting game (a problem, in my opinion, with most fighting game story modes, including MK9′s), and used them only where it made sense instead. If you’re going to have a story mode in a fighting game, the story needs to be the focus of the mode – the game has every other mode to give you all the fighting you could want, after all. By far the strongest part of P4A’s story was Labrys’ chapter, and that had only one fight at the very end – which honestly was probably the most unnecessary in the entire mode to boot, so I’d have had no problem if there were no fights in that chapter of the story.
I’d disagree with holding up Mortal Kombat 9′s story as getting much right, too. While I appreciate that it had a lot more effort put into it than most fighting game stories do, the end result was nothing but the video game equivalent of a dumb action movie with a bloated cast. Its use of cinematics, which is really all that it does different from other fighting game story modes, comes nowhere close to making up for its lack of good writing. Among fighting games, the BlazBlue series and P4A both offer much better stories than that mess.
Really, my one complaint with the story mode is that the ArcSys style of giving each character their own story to play through doesn’t work so well here. Because everyone is going through the same events (Labrys and parts of Elizabeth’s story aside), there’s a lot of repetition between the stories, especially with Yu, Yosuke, Chie, and Yukiko. Naoto and the P3 characters offer some variety by coming at things from a different angle and having an alternate ending, but once they’re in the TV world, the repetition is still present up until the tail end.
Beyond that though, I’d say they nailed it.
I’d have to agree with you on the story basically seeming the same, just from different perspectives. When playing through the story I mixed up the characters a lot so I didn’t see the same story 4 times in a row.
While I can definitely see people enjoying this style of story-telling, just wasn’t my cup of tea. Thanks for the discussion!
Nice to see another Episode of ‘Shinkara’! (and on the same month as you said lol)
Ah yes P4A/U. For a game that crosses both the RPG and Fighting World, Atlus and Ark System game got it right.
I’ll admit for someone who joined the fray of fighting games of BB & MVC3, this one I was the most comfortable in. It was easy to get into and I can actually hold my ground in most online matches.
As a fan of the Persona series, the change of VAs isn’t something that bothers me. Although the only thing that scares me is that the New English Teddie just reminds me of Japanese Kuma… is that even possible.
So yeah if anyone who has this on PS3, add ‘DJ_Jet89′ and maybe we can get a match together someday.
The story mode is less a fighting game with plot and more a visual novel with fights every 20-something minutes? Just like BlazBlue then.
I like both BlazBlue and Persona, so this is a perfect mix for me.
Yup, if you like the visual novel style of BlazBlue then you’ll love this. Plenty of it.
And you sir got your Persona in my fighting game? Wanna fight about it?! Just kidding. Great vid Taylor.

Music Mondays revisits the band that brought us tunes from Scott Pilgrim vs. the World and Bit.Trip Runner.
I’m pretty sure the person who’s standing in for Teddie is Yuri Lowenthal (who also plays Yosuke in the game). It sounds a lot like him so… Yeah, I guess Dave Wittenberg (original VA) wasn’t available or something?
I’m also probably guessing that he’ll be absent from Persona 4: The Golden as well if he isn’t in this game… oh noes…
Actually, Teddie is now voiced by Sam Riegel, not Yuri Lowenthal.
And I still wish to murder that bear. Oh well, I’ll probably get the chance to do just that when the game is released, so….DAY ONE BUY!
I lul’d at Mitsuru in the huge fur coat. Akihiko looked alittle odd in his new costume. Hopefully some DLC loving will get them in older skins.
Yeah, I definitely do not like Teddie’s new voice. It’s pretty darn jarring. Nothing for it though I suppose.
The game itself I’m hugely looking forward to. I’ve been watching footage of the arcade version that was released in Japan on youtube, and it’s gotten me very excited. I can’t even decide which character I want to try first – Yukiko, Aigis, Mitsuru, or Naoto would probably be my frontrunners, but I can’t narrow it beyond that, and honestly the only characters I don’t think I’ll play are Kanji (I generally don’t like grapplers) and maybe Shadow Labrys (don’t think I’ll like how her Persona is always out – too easy to break).
Oh, and for anyone who hasn’t, look up the theme music for each character in this game on youtube. It is incredible – and this is coming from someone who usually doesn’t even notice music in video games, no matter how much everyone else likes it. It’s hard for me to narrow down my favorites there either: Aigis, Yukiko, Akihiko, Naoto, Chie, Yu Narukami (the main character – whose theme is a remix of Reach Out to the Truth!), they’re just all so great. I really hope this game follows Atlus’ pattern of including the soundtrack with the game.
Oh, something I forgot to mention in my original post – I hope you can turn off that auto combo feature. That could be awfully annoying if you’re trying to repeatedly use your light attack for any reason.
Nooooooooooooooo! They changed the voices around!? (:O
That makes me a sad bear.
Well, the new VA’s done some decent work so I’m sure his performance will be “bear”-able lol
It’s bearable yeah, I just can’t get over how it’s sounds like someone TRYING to sound like Teddie but not hitting it.
It’s better than the Japanese voice at least.
That had me holding my head as if nails were sliding on a chalkboard.
Sucks that they had to change the voices for Chie and Teddie but this will be a great fighting game and at least they got everyone else from the English cast.
Where in the video does it show Chie having a new VA? The only characters speaking in this video are Teddie and Rise. If you’re referring to the battle cries in the background, I believe that they’re using the Japanese version’s, not the English version. They usually do that for trailers and whatnot.
i’m on the fence about this one on one hand i love persona 4 but on the other i have never realy played a fighting game before.
Should tell you there’s no shame in using easy mode. I used it back when I first started playing fighting games
I fucking loathe you Teddy.
This game looks amaaaaaaaaaaaaaazing, cant wait to try this one out, I’m a huge fan of the persona games, as well as fighting games.
One thing that bothers me tho, is the ease of the combos. I’m all for making fighting games more accessible for new comers to jump in but there’s a fine line between accessibility and mastering a character in only a few days.
I would argue one of the most important parts of a fighting game is to be able to immediately see the difference between an inexperienced player and an experienced one, it makes getting to that point all the more rewarding as you climb up the latter and face opponents tougher than ones you’d faced before.
Then again this is the first I’ve seen or heard of this games so we’ll see.
Am I REALLY the only one who liked Teddie or Fukka? Seriously guys. Grow up. So they repeat some lines.
I liked both those characters
I don’t hate Teddy JUST because a lot of his lines are repeated (that’s definitely part of it though) I just hate the damn bear period. Persona 4 is one of my favorite games and bears are my favorite animal, but Teddie was fucking annoying beyond belief! He steals away all your girlfriend(s) at the Summer festival, his jokes aren’t funny, his voice is annoying, and he doesn’t develop nearly as well as any of the other characters. If he wasn’t a decent healer/magic user I’d have left him in the dust the first chance I got.
Ok, to give another perspective (because those are ALL valid reasons but I see it differently)
Stealing the girls at the summer festival? HILARIOUS. I loved it. His jokes are MEANT to be unfunny that’s why it’s funny. And actually he does have a long development that takes place during the course of the ENTIRE GAME.
In fact I would argue he is perhaps THE MOST DEVELOPED CHARACTER. ;P
I get that the ‘bear-puns’ are suppose to be ‘so bad their good’, I just think the character is too self-aware of that for it to be funny. It would be much funnier if Teddy just casually spoke ‘bear-puns’ like they were regular phrases of speaking, instead of emphasizing how BEARY funny his jokes are, then wink at the camera for 10 seconds, and then…You get the idea. But to each their own I guess. Maybe I just don’t get anti-humor.
I’m pretty sure repeating lines is not Teddy’s problem lol, but to each their own, I agree with LousyTactician on this front.
When I first heard of this, I really didn’t care. Fighter for the P4 universe seemed out of place unless it was gonna be P4 vs P3 all the way. And seeing all the trailers and the release date closing in. I Find myself wanting to play this more and more.
Huh, Teddie sounds weird. Not bothering me, but other people might.
Anyway, Even though I saw the Japanese version of the Tutorial, It’s nice to see it in English. All that’s left is the other trailers in English.
Thought his voice sounded a bit higher in pitch than I remembered, now I know it’s not just me
Good catch, yes, Teddie is now voiced by Sam Riegel
Too bad, I thought Dave Wittenberg did a great job as Teddie. Oh well
He did do a good job, he just stepped down (his own choice) from doing the role again on this and the anime. So Sam Riegel was brought in to replace him since he had already expressed interest in voicing Teddie for the dub of the anime
Where do you come by this information!? RAAAUGH!
Don’t make me do more bear puns to get it out of ya! D:<
Can’t wait to play this game
It’s a fighting game and I have always like fighters in general. Win or lose, it means little to me. In short, just another cool fighter to add to my collection.
