Oh boy. This just got real people. This. Just. Got. Real!

After the release of the hit reboot of the Mortal Kombat series last year, many assumed a followup to that game would be next on the docket for developer NetherRealm Studios. Today, via Gamespot, the company revealed that while their next game would indeed be both a fighting game and feature a return of sorts to characters previously worked on by those in the studio, its not what most people are likely to be expecting. That is because rather than another go with the warriors of Mortal Kombat, NeherRealm Sudios will be tackling the heroes and villains of the DC Universe instead. Of course, the last time members of NetherRealm Studios, including creative director and co-creator of Mortal Kombat Ed Boon, were involved with DC Comics (back when they worked as a part of the now defunct Midway Amusement Games) was 2008′s now infamous Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe, but this time around the crossover elements are completely off the table.

That is right, NetherRealm Studios is creating a wholly DC Comics focused fighting game currently titled Injustice: Gods Among Us and it promises to be one of the wildest and most unique games to ever feature these characters. The game will include different classes of fighters (including Power, Gadgets, and Speed) to reflect the varied abilities of those who operate in the DC Universe, a final roster that is promised to match or even exceed the 28 members strong line-up of 2011′s Mortal Kombat (Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman, Solomon Grundy, Lex Luthor, Harley Quinn and The Flash having already been confirmed, leaving at least 21 slots sill to be filled; I am rooting for Martian Manhunter myself) and a big focus on a interactive environments. Could this finally be the title that truly gets the idea of a DC fighting game (MKvsDC being decent at best while the less said about 1995′s disastrous SNES/Genesis Justice League Task Force the better) right? Only time will tell, but in the meantime check out the debut trailer for the game, along with an interview with Ed Boon, both courtesy of Gamespot below:

So there are elements in that trailer I like and then there are elements that leave me dubious. On the one hand, the comic geek in me cannot help but think that The Flash (or almost anybody who takes that move) should be flat out dead after that punched-into-the-atmosphere stunt Superman pulls. Also, after the Nu52 the last thing I really want to see is another grim and gritty take on any DC Universe character who does not have a bat on their chest (or at least regularly fights one). On the other hand, the video game lover in me looks at this and gets excited at the thought of another fighting game from NetherRealm after last year’s amazing Mortal Kombat, whatever the theme and license used. Which just about evens out to cautious interest for Injustice: Gods Among Us on my part. If nothing else, I think NetherRealm has earned the benefit of the doubt especialyy since if anyone can make this idea sing, it is them. Injustice: Gods Among Us is currently set for release on PS3, Xbox 360 and Wii U sometime in 2013. Stay tuned to Blistered Thumbs for continuing coverage of the game and be sure to share your thoughts and opinions in the comments section below.

Just showed this to a friend of mine and I think I agree with him on this one, why not add Lobo into the mix, he would make a great character in this game

    Character wish list…
    1. Darkseid
    2. Atrocitus
    3. Hush
    4. Bane
    5. Sinestro
    6. Nightwing
    7. Ra’z Al Ghul

If not any other significant Lantern characters, hopefully a Lantern-themed DLC

Maybe DC can finally have a great title again that isn’t called “Arkham _____” once in a while.

1- I find this news awesome, but I’m afraid this game will turn out to be too much of Mortal Kombat with a new paintjob. The trailer shows similarities with MK already, so I hope further insights on the system and game modes will dissipate my fears.

2- I find the fact that they added Harley Quinn instead of the Joker quite curious. Not to mention Harley’s design bears a striking semblance to how she looks in the Harley’s Revenge DLC of Batman Arkham City. Could it be that this game and Arkham City share continuity and Joker is dead?

As the old saying goes, “Third time’s the charm”. I don’t know the DC mythos as well as a hardcore DC fan but I’m confident after the awesome MK9 that Netherrealm can make a fighter worthy of satiating both hardcore and casual DC fans, especially with a 28+ roster.

Hm, interesting. I do hope they change up the gameplay mechanics from the ones they used in MK9 though. While that wasn’t a bad game, a lot of aspects about it weren’t to my tastes as fighting games go (block button, inability to control jump arc or block while jumping, and canned combos, to name a few).

Character-wise I should think a Green Lantern is a safe assumption, which would get my favorite superhero in there and substantially increase my interest in the game. Besides one of them, I’d be interested to see Firestorm on the heroes side, and either Larfleeze or Atrocitus on the villains side (I’d imagine both would be too much to hope for – can’t expect them to use too many GL villains, and my bet is Sinestro will be the first choice there).

Oh, and in the not-gonna-happen category, Mera (Aquaman’s wife) or the Aqualad from the Young Justice cartoon. Because they’re basically waterbenders.

Maybe, but then they’d probably focus on her red lantern powers and ignore her waterbending. Which would kind of defeat the reason I’d want to see her in.

Best hope it’s more MK9 than MKvDC. Oh and one thing I think must be said if there’s going to be a story mode…

GET THE DC WRITERS TO WRITE IT!

The worst part of MK9 was the script of that games story mode, espicially the whole Sindel kills of everyone part. If it’s written by DC, I’ll probably be interested.

Actually, I read on some other site that they are working with to guys from DC. But as far as I remember, that was pretty much all it said. That they’re from DC. Not if they’re writers or anything, but I think it’s safe to assume. And hey, at least MK *had* a story, compared to SF4′s “Intro-Movie – *fight fight fight* – ‘We’re rivals, because whatever and therefore get a cut scene that doesn’t say anything’ – *fight fight fight* – ‘I’m the final boss! You get this exact same scne, no matter which character you pick!’ – *fight fight fight* – End-Movie”

As for what my thoughts about this game are: I’m more a Marvel guy myself, but I’m looking forward to this. The fighting mechanics sound rather interesting and it’s made by the guys who made my favorite fighting game ever ^^
So yeah, let’s see what they come up with.

It was kind of funny in a camp way how the story was basically watching Raiden eff up time and time again, ultimately making things worse until he finally figures it out when most everyone is already dead.

The story is pleasantly awful in a… 70s kung fu film sort of way.

Sweet, hope to see these characters in the game:

Heroes: Any of the Green Lanterns, Aquaman, Jonah Hex (comic book version), Booster Gold

Villains: Sinestro, Anti-monitor(would at least make an excellent boss), Brainiac, Parallax (either the Hal Jordan or Kyle Rayner version)
