Monty on the Run, is an all time classic British video game, which was only really brought to the attention of the world recently when it’s soundtrack was used in “I Wanna Be The Guy”. And the game has gone on to be voted the second greatest Western video game soundtrack of all time (After the track “Tristram” in Diablo), I also highly recommend listening to Monty on the Run’s sequel (Auf Wiedershen Monty!) as it’s pretty kick-ass too! (though criminally only came in at #188, as it’s so obscure) but I used a jazz remix in my last Kusoge club video!

I do plan to give the whole “Monty Mole” franchise a GYCW retrospective some point in the future (as this retro corner does it absolutely no justice) as there’s a fascinating history behind it with it originally being used as political propaganda in the British coal miners strike in the 1980′s with Arthur Scargill (who appears at the end of the game!) Though, the final game in the series “Impossamole” did appear on the Turbografx 16 in the US. (which ironically was never released in the UK).

Quick Note: this is another retro corner episode made for Xleague.TV, but then was adapted into a Games Yanks Can’t Wank episode for the web (which is where you may have seen it before), but for the first time ever, this is the original unedited retro corner finally shown in it’s full glory!!!

That is some brilliant music. I had a Commodore 64, but never played that one. That game over music alone was amazing!

Listened to the theme of Monty on the Run. Not bad, but I prefer the soundtrack to Great Giana Sisters or Katakis, for instance.

My god that theme kicks ass! I mean. I’m not usually a sucker for retro themes but that one was really tightly composed.

Personally, I liked “Auf Wiedersehen” the best of all three.
With the country-based theme, the awesome music and challenging gameplay. :-)

I’m really happy that more people remember those really old days. Keep on retro-ing! :D

“Auf Wiedersehen” was the first game in the series I played as a kid too! (I didn’t realize that until recently when I was pawing through my old tapes), they certainly refined the game from Monty on the Run, it was a lot more polished and fairer.

But I’d love to do a full retrospective, as there isn’t one at all on the web :(

I’ve thought about this a few times over the years, and can only really think of two possible reasons…

1> The huge majority of games made in the 80′s up until the mid-late 90′s were basing them on the mindset of an arcade game, where you had lives and/or a time limit Etc. So they were purposely made hard to entice you to keep pumping money into a machine. (It’s a rather pointless concept to stick to at home though, considering you only paid once for a home game and you had all the time in the world to beat it.)

2> The other thought is: simply as games were a lot smaller/shorter then because of the limited memory, so they had to make them tough so you wouldn’t finish them in five minutes!

Fact that Monty on the Run is hard game is testament to how different gamers and games were back then. Games were hard but gamers had guts to push forward to complite them.

Some games went beyond that. Some were so bugged they were uncompletable, like Airwolf.

Is this the NES or Amstrad/Spectrum/Commodore 64 Airwolf you mean here?

I’m really tempted to do a feature on unbeatable games due to poor programming/lack of memory.

I meant the speccy/commodore 64 version..but after i posted that i searched youtube and someone managed to complete it afterall! I was told that the game was bugged so Elite made the last screen impossible to clear. But after seeing the “ending” its aint worth trying!

The fact that you think Mega Man 2′s Dr. Wily Stage 1 is the best music track in that game series proves that you know absolutely nothing about Mega Man music.
Dr.W Stage 1 (MM2) is one of the most overrated pieces of music ever made: not necessarily bad, but still highly overrated when compared to the rest of the great tracks one can find from Mega Man 1,2, 3, etc. Just saying.

The fact that you try to place your opinion on a pedestal above other people’s when it’s entirely subjective really shows how immature you actually are.
You can, of course, disagree…but there’s no need to be such a prat about it. Just saying.

The fact you “assumed” that it was MY opinion that Mega Man 2′s Dr Wily Stage 1 is the best music track in the game series, proves that you will jump to conclusions about a person before hearing any facts.

This was a poll (several) conducted from 2008 – 2011 (most notably from Hardcore Gaming 101) and that was voted by the PUBLIC and not by me. Not once did I say it was my opinion. Your beef is with the general public, not myself!

(I won’t even go into the fact you’ve not even posted what songs you believe are better)

Your sheer arrogance of attacking someone with blatantly incorrect information offends me to have someone like you commentating on my videos in the first place. You should be ashamed by your demeanor.

      Just saying.
