Accept call? I'm in the middle of some Little Deviants!

The headline pretty much says it all, folks. A “Skype Video and Voice calling app for PS Vita will be available later today on the PlayStation Store.” In case you don’t know what Skype is, here’s a video of an awkward guy demonstrating it.

While it’s certainly nice to have the option to video chat via portable gaming device, I can’t help but get the feeling that Sony should have just made a phone with dual analog sticks. Currently, the Vita exists in some strange liminal space between Gameboy and iPhone, and it’s not helping its sales. I’m holding my breath for the inevitable redesign, at which point we’ll probably see a clearer indication of which way the company wants to go with the device. Does Sony want to compete with Nintendo or with Apple? Neither will be easy, but at least we can Skype now. One step at a time, people.

    Uhh… lovely.
    Say, Sony, buddy, pal.
…. how about some more games? Or at least releasing Gravity Rush a lil earlier here in the non-japanese speaking world?

Hey, anyone remember the N-Gage? lol

IMO, it would be great if they did this on PS3 as well. I mean, the PSP, THE PORTABLE CONSOLE, had Skype, but not the home one? Just doesn’t make sense to me =/.

Just thinking out loud here, but can the PS3 even support cross-game chat? My friends are making a big deal about the Vita having it and the PS3, well, not.

That’s cool I guess. Still not enough games for the Vita for me to warrant a buy (and they have to work on the memory cards, seriously), but at least they did something Nintendo SHOULD have done with the 3DS. I mean, the 3DS has a mic and cameras, and Nintendo have stated before that they saw smartphones as a competitive hurdle; with Skype support on the 3DS, they could maybe cut down on a lot of that competition.

So I gotta say, this is one of the first smart moves from Sony I’ve seen in YEARS, beating Nintendo to the punch.

I’m glad it’s not a full phone. I’ve had the Xperia Play for not even a year yet and it’s starting to fall apart. The touch screen refuses to work, and bits are starting to chip off of it. And I treat it well, and don’t misuse it at all!
Keep game consoles and phones apart I say.

this is a key feature the vita was missing at lanuch but it dosen’t say if it works with 3G (if it dose you could honestly make it into your phone aswell)
