From left to right: Radec, Needles Kain, Sly Cooper, and Fat Princess.

It looks like the rumors were true. Sony’s PlayStation All Stars Battle Royale exists, and is in fact a Super Smash Bros.-seque crossover fighting game. Enough talk though, here it is in action:

Developed by brand-new SuperBot Entertainment, Battle Royale is clearly inspired by Smash Bros., but also has its own twist on the party brawler. First of all, there are no traditional health meters. Attacking your opponents grants you AP, which can be used on “Super Moves” that destroy opponents. Every destroyed enemy scores you a point, and whoever has the most points when time runs out is the winner.

The similarities to Nintendo’s crossover fighter are numerous though. Items drop into the fray, allowing you to drain your opponents AP, similar to the Brave Attacks of Dissidia Final Fantasy. Stages feature hazards, but appear to be far more dynamic. For instance, the God of War level, Hades, is invaded by Patapon soldiers during the match, eventually changing the danger from purple chains to spears. Button input is reportedly nearly identical to Smash Bros., with directional input changing basic button presses. You can go here to see some exclusive footage of the game in action.

Currently, the confirmed characters include Colonel Radec (Killzone), Kratos (God of War), Parappa the Rapper, Sly Cooper, Fat Princess, and “Sweet Tooth” (Twisted Metal). I use quotations around the latter because that seems to be the name he will go by in the game, despite it actually being the name of the ice cream truck he drives. Confirmed stages include “Hades (God of War), Sandover Village (Jak & Daxter), Dreamscape (LittleBigPlanet), and Metropolis (Ratchet & Clank).”

I think we can all agree that PlayStation All Stars Battle Royale is a terrible, unwieldy name, but the game actually looks fun. Sure, you can look at it as a rip-off, but is that really fair? Not every tournament-style fighter is a rip-off of Street Fighter, right? I guess it just depends if you’re ready to accept “Crossover Brawler” as its own genre. Personally, I am, as long as there’s at least one Legend of Dragoon character included.

Most of us can agree that this game doesn’t have much originality, due to Sony copying the smash bros mechanic…But you have to admit that seeing all of these incredible characters fight is awesome….I just hope that they include many modes to strengthen the single player and a story that shows an interaction between Kratos and Sweet Tooth

    A few things.

Level designs look pretty bad and really small, which is a shame because on these said small levels the characters are almost indistinguishable and really drives home how much more varied the Nintendo all stars really are in comparison.

Besides that I am really depressed that the game is just a shameless rip instead of doing something new and interesting.

Sony REALLY wishes it were Nintendo. I get it.

Solid Snake and Dante belongs to Konami and Capcom if I recall. Snake was in Super Smash Bros Brawl but it doesn’t mean Sony will include third party characters in its game.

This game has possibly the highest “play while high” appeal ever. Say what you will about Smash Bros, but at least the tone feels relatively balanced. Meanwhile, The Beast punching down Little Big Planet as Kratos, Killzone Soldier, Spyro, and Parapa duke it out to the music of Fat Princess…

I don’t think it’s a rip off or Smash Brothers really. Smash bros created it’s own thing, Yes. It was a good thing, I don’t see the problem of Sony building off of what nintendo started. And even if it is a rip off who cares it’s a good one with characters we know and love and care about so good on you Sony.

Its a ripoff for sure. But no one will care as long as its at least half as fun as Smash Brothers. Like its Nintendo counterpart, no one should take this game seriously. This is, of course true of every game in the “Throw random video game characters into a fighting game and let people smash buttons for a few hours” sub-genre.

how is it a ripoff?! are saying Playstation or Xbox can’t have their own exclusive game character mashed up in a brawl game?! do you know Smash Brothers was not the first “Throw random video game characters into fighting game…”.

The ripoff is more how the game is actually played. similar graphics, similar level design, similar gameplay mechanics (Fat Princess = Jigglypuff). Everything feels exactly like Super Smash Bros Brawls, even the in-game UI.

Hey, if you’re going to rip something off, I guess it’s good that they’re copying something that’s good. I can recall a lot of people giving Sega’s All-Star Racing a lot of grief for essentially just being Mario Kart with Sega characters, and yet it was a really fun, diverse, and frantic racing game. They are at least including a few new ideas, such as the power meter. Let’s just hope that’s better implemented than the Smash Ball was in Brawl.

    My characters wish list:

    1- Crsah Bandicoot.

    2- Spyro the Dragon.

    3- Sir Daniel (Medieval series)

    4- Spike (Ape Escape 1)

if it least 2 of these characters made it, I’ll be happy to buy the game. ^^

So looking forward to this. Also hope Sony can coax Sega to let us have someone from the Yakuza series in this and Atlus to allow at least one Shin Megami Tensei character join the fight.
Of course, if they really want to go back to the Playstation days, then how about some characters from good old Wild Arms?

I just hope PS Allstars and Smash Bros don’t start taking third party characters “away” from each other. With Snake and Sonic in the Brawl cast they started a cool thing and I hope they go on to include characters like Mega Man (X) or Travis Touchdown, both of whom had outings on Sony’s platforms as well.

It’s hard to avoid calling it a rip-off when the colors for each player are the same ones from Super Smash Bros. Granted, they swapped Players 3 and 4′s colors, but still.

Glad to see Sly in this. Just give me Ratchet, Clank, Jak, and Cole and I’ll be happy. I’m not sure if I’ll buy this game though, but I can accept it happening.

The fact that “Battle Royale” is yellow has me curious if “PlayStation All-Stars” is going to be referring to a new franchise as a whole with different genres, and “Battle Royale” is just the fighting game. If so, then I’d like to see Nintendo adopt a similar approach to Super Smash Bros.

Well this is…interesting. I hope it has an identity for itself that might separate it from Super Smash Bros.

He said he reads message boards for fan speculations. They should know to just go all out with every character from Sony’s IPs.

I’d say “Platform Fighting Game” would be a better name for the sub-genre, since its main trait is combining elements of both Fighting games and Platformers. You could use this gameplay style without it being a crossover game, after all, so there’s no sense naming it after that element.

Anyway, I’d probably be more interested if it weren’t for the fact that I only know a couple of the characters. Kratos I know, and I know of (but have never played the games of) Sly Cooper. The others, never heard of ‘em.

Oh goh, I can see it all now: “No Crash or Spyro, no buy.” Hoo boy. Anyway, since this will have a slightly higher budget than Cartoon Network Punch Time Xplosion XL, there’s NO WAY it can suck…unless people are THAT close-minded.

Personally I’m hoping the roster will have at least as many characters as Smash Bros but I have no idea how many people Sony can gather up from past and present.

As for the name, I would have been fine with Playstation All-Stars but did they really have to add the Battle Royale part?

… *snicker*… BAHAHAHAHAHA! *Breathe*… Oh you’re serious? Well, maybe now. But given that every fighter of at least the 16-bit era pretty much was just that before anyone thought to try something different.

But no one can say with a straight face that they did not just completely rip off Smash bros. in almost every aspect but how to determine how people are knocked off. I expect to hear a pleasantly annoying rap in one stage at least.

*Sees Parrappa the Rapper is an available character* *Squees* Well there we are. And now I am forced to be interested because they include the one character from the PS1 days they actually own and I love despite being absolutely corny.

Street Fighter is just a ripoff of the first level of The Karate Kid for the NES.

On topic, Sony really had to scrape the bottom of the barrel to get characters for this one.

I agree. Most of their “iconic” characters either don’t belong to them (Crash and Spyro) or are just incredibly bland (mostly this).

Imean other than what’s been shown, what do we have left? Arc the lad? Genji? Heavenly Sword? I’ll give them Dark Cloud, but do the really need to include Toan who is pretty much link in a shawl in something already this blatant?

And if there is a Legend to be included, it better be Legaia. Not that Duel Saga crap though.

        Also MediEvil.

Alright Sony, go convince Activision to give back Spyro and Crash for this game. Their PS1 games are part of my childhood and I really want them to be in this, if only for retro appeal.

Oh, and I suppose see if Konami will let Snake pop up as well. Worth asking, isn’t it?
