Today BioWare has announced that Star Wars: The Old Republic will be going free this coming weekend. Starting this Thursday.
The critically acclaimed MMO has been struggling in the past months to garner any new membership, although the recent patch announcement is fixing up some problems with the game, and adding the new Legacy mode into the mix. Offering the title for a free weekend is a good PR move as well, giving players the chance to try it out before they sink a lot of money and time into the mix.
The tryout period begins this Thursday, March 15th, at 12:01 AM CST, and shall end on Monday, March 19th at 2:00 AM CST. To sign up, you need to get a weekend pass. Fortunately there are no real strings attached, its basically a free weekend for everyone who wants to take advantage of it, kind of like how Showtime and other cable channels show off their movies to customers and give them the option to buy their channels. The Old Republic is calling, the question now is will you heed it?
| PROS: | Great shooting mechanics, Paintball is fun, Diverse gun selection |
| CONS: | Soundtrack is terrible, game has no story mode |

Chaos looks into the VERY recent free-to-play conversion of Star Wars: The Old Republic to see what been changed, and if there’s any real reason this game didn’t take the MMO world by storm like everyone thought it would.
It’s about time.

BioWare continues to salvage servers from The Old Republic… but now they’re offering rewards for helping server communities?
A rapidly declining subscribership and a huge development staff can still sate EA’s hunger from ToR’s earnings, right? Right??
MMO Grinder Sidequest is a quick look at MMOs I wouldn’t normally review, be it through limited trial accounts, or Closed Beta games. First up, it’s the oft requested Star Wars The Old Republic.
And the weekend begins Thursday now too!

At the Star Wars Guild Summit there was a video shown to the attendees that detailed the upcoming 1.2 Mega-Patch. Finally, after much waiting, comes the actual clear and HD version of that video…

Last week saw EA and BioWare’s investors receiving a few updates on their many investments.

The Disciples of Hatred and it’s Roleplayers Contingent take on some PvP in the Star Wars: The Old Republic Beta
What’s in the SWTOR VIP Lounge??
Are you ready for some hot click-spamming PvP madness?!
Announcing the first gathering of the Disciples of Hatred during the Beta Weekend Stress Test! …and of course that silly Jedi Consular progression video too.
Your questions FINALLY answered! What are the best aspects of the game? Why this MMO than any other? Do we get to kill Jar Jar? All this and more in ToR Q&A #1!

Much like the Jedi, you were deceived. I was in the beta test all along! MUHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!
I would say SWTOR is better than WoW was at release, but by now that means nothing.
But instead I can say that except for class balance and endgame content (which come naturally in time, unless the developers drop the ball: see Champions Online), the Old Republic IS, in fact, better than WoW.
But not that much better. And World of Warcraft is better established, with a rooted community. So of course SWTOR wasn’t able to dethrone it. A pity really.
Anyone who thought that TOR could overthrow WoW overnight is delusional, or doesn’t understand how MMO’s work. If everyone gave up playing WoW in an extremely rapid period of time, it would indicate something seriously wrong with the game. Many successful old MMO’s still have active populations to this day, despite plenty of newer and better games coming out.
So far, in my opinion at least, SWTOR is a better game than WoW, and so long as Bioware continue to update content at a reasonable pace, TOR should overtake WoW eventually. Eventually being the keyword. And hey, there isn’t any reason to actually want the death of other games, because the more successful games are out there the more competition there will be, and the better it is for the players.
Where’s KotOR 3?
Its funny, interviews about the games development said they are making Kotor 3, I am referring to the MMO above of course.
I did want to see what the game has in store for my Bounty Hunter after level 11… didn’t get much further during the beta.
This should be good.
I’m surprised you two didn’t say this game sucks.
I’d say that MMOs as a genre TYPICALLY suck in my personal tastes, but as this is an average MMO, like almost every other MMO, it’s probably great for the people it was made for. I just think the people it was made for are already playing it, so unless there’s some drastic new business model on it, or some great deal (let’s be honest, a weekend free on an MMO isn’t), then I don’t see this getting new, stable, paying players.
So this is the game fan boys screamed would take down wow?
Yep. And from what I’ve heard,
…It really hasn’t. With just a weekend free, I still wouldn’t play it, because I’ve never played an MMO longer than a month. What I really want out of this game is a singleplayer mode you don’t have to pay monthly for. Y’know, like the other Old Republic games (that was the only mode they had and I was never left wanting). At most, I’d maybe want co-op player companions in a KoTOR game, but millions of Jedi and Sith running around like they own the place and acting out of character? Do not want.
That’s just how I feel about it. If BioWare doesn’t deliver, I’ve got other things to spend my money on. No skin off my wallet.
