In Lineage II, you must stop a goddess from releasing destruction and hell upon the world… too bad she has the right idea. Beware the PKs and good luck getting out of the newbie area!

haha I got the Aion joke. One wing.
Yeah, any open PK system is a game breaker for me. (except Diablo2…..because its an old friend and I can leave a game room very very fast once I hear the PK trumpet play)
Its strange that you are one of the first games reviewers that I’ve seen to really emphasis the PK system with the same hate I feel. Most other reviewers barely mention it like “oh, and you can PvP and PK someone once you hit level 20″ like its no big deal……and almost when the review was done. Then I felt it was a big waste of time that I watched their review and was interested in it but won’t try it once they mentioned the open PK options.
And yeah I’ve seen other people troll by doing that mass aggro maneuver. Sometimes the monsters won’t attack anyone else until the aggroing person dies (like in Guild Wars). I dunno…I stopped playing most MMO games because of the grind or because of trolls like them that (as you said) love to make other players’ lives a living hell.
Also, nice edits for funny moments in your vid
I am a pro. Let me correct a couple things. You can play windows mode by pressing alt+ENTER. And you can pickup drops with the pickup command you had right there on your bar. You can also use these items on the bar by pressing F1 F2 F3 F4 etc. You can also move without clicking by using the arrows keys.
I’d like to log in and try that windowed mode thing, but I stopped playing the game the minute I finished writing the script. It really should be featured in the options screen like every other game that has a windowed mode, though.
Also I did mention that pick up command. “Alternatively, you can use the “pick up” action to automatically walk to and loot an item when it’s pressed.” It’s still a pain.
This is my favorite series on Blistered Thumbs.
Ah yes, Open PVP…That’s why I never played this game. If they get a new Closed PVP or PVE-only server, then it would be a fun enough way to waste a weekend.
Got the joke. “Half” committed to Aion which has 2-winged characters. Here they are one-winged. Cue Sephiroth’s theme music.
It was a stretch, but I’m more ashamed to get the joke than if I missed it.
I still look forward to an MMO where if your character dies, it is dead and you have to start from scratch… oh, and is available for Mac OS. (Boot Camp and Parallels can kiss my perfectly shaped ass.)
L2 was great before brazilian kids heard for it. The amount of “jajajajajajajaja” and “kkkkkkkkk” is just brutal.
I beta tested this game in closed beta. It was never good. Even back at launch the number of Chinese gold farmers outnumbered English speakers. This game is only good for Ultima Online rejects.
rang rang
roll
you go you go
pk pk
Once again MMOs get compared to WoW
I played only a little bit of Lineage 2 when it first came out. After deciding it was a little too much like Perfect World International, I stopped. My problem is I get obsessive with the grinding. In PWI, I’d find myself going cross eyed from hearing the same strings of music as I desperately searched for >insert resource HERE<. I did like how the community came up with pretty cut and dry tutorials on maximizing the usage of points and which skills to invest in.
After seeing the review, I'm pretty sure this isn't the game for me. I like the art and the music, but I'm not a PVPer. The PK and the trollish community would drive me nuts. I like seeing people help each other out, and the negativity there seems like it would just sap all the fun and energy out the game. I also find it strange that you can't communicate in chat until you hit level 20. But then again, my first MMO was City of Heroes back in 2008.
you couldn’t hav played it when it first came out if you could compare it with perfect world. Since Perfect world was published in EU and NA in 2008, while ineage was published in EU and NA april 2004 (to put this in perspective that was half a year before WoW).
have you tried DC universe online yet? it became free to play a while ago.
There was a poll for that with the other Super Hero MMOs. Champions won
Er, i mean City if Heros Won. Wishful thinking on my part
Excellent review as always. You answered a lot of questions I had about Lineage2 that i didn’t feel like hunting down myself.
Huh, that comment about a mmo that had less choices, unfortunately the game that came to mind was Final Fantasy 11 (which came around the same time…). 2 hair choices per hair/face, 8 styles, No eye choices, and 3 sizes (unfortunately as a small mithra when i played, I found out that left you at crotch height of large elves…..). Considering there are 5 races (two who were unisex…), it left a lot of us modding the skins to suit us. Though from what i read on Chaosd1′s site, I fully doubt that FFXI is what he was referring to….Even IF the game is right now a partially repaired but completely castrated version of the original version i played. *muffled cursing*
Anyways, generally speaking I find that I avoid games like Lineage II because of the horrible community. While PvP makes a game interesting, when I just want to follow the damn plots and stories (though now that i think about it, he didn’t talk much about the story…. Does it have one?), I don’t need you pissing off my cat by trying to cleave me in the skull because of my pointy lavender ears! It doesn’t help that I generally play healers or tanks, and will help people at the drop of a hat, so PvP has never settled well with me…
Not everquest, well at least we know that Square-enix will never be on this list; unless it was made FTP, it’ll die subscription.
That kind of open PK might have been fine for 2003, but 10 years later its very outdated. Its a shame theyre still going with an antiquated PK design because this game does look fun. I really dont mind grinding as long as it doesnt get to a point where I need to resort to hardcore daily grinding for a week or longer just to gain a single level *cough*flyff*cough*.
A game that has recently made the shift from P2P to F2P but not Everquest. Jon, are you playing StarTrek Online? ^_^
Wow, you know you can be really creepy when you want to be.
one week for a level? try months
These MMOs and bad communities. Aren’t these games about getting along and playing together? If a game can’t reign in the bad apples it might as well not even have online functions.
It’s unfair to compare this tt Luna is is it was copying it, since Luna is 2009 and Lineage 2 is 2003.
I haven’t come up to with such problems with players, but I was probably lucky. Be couse i have seen a lot of PKing.
Lineage 2 sure is a mixed bag. I like the class transfer system, the castle siege and the player driven economy. It looks great for a 2003 game and th music is just amazing. But there are a ot of crappy sides as well. The balance of exp is reall borked for one. I remember griding my ass off just to get to the first class change back in the day, now you go through the tutorial and you are already there. Seems a bit off. Maybe somewhere in between would be good. Then there is the terrible controls and targeting. It sucks. Also i’ve been killed a few times while playing the game, but i never felt it was a huge problem tbh. A bit annoying, sure, but not game breaking. Maybe i was just lucky, i don’t know. But the interface is shite, controls are bad and the combat is boring.
Anyway, yeah…this game is old and it’s very noticeabe
I hope Lineage 3 fixes the gripes but keeps the fun ideas. I want to sit on that goddamn throne in one of the castles some day!
Lineage 3 was cancled years ago. Unless you were talking about Terra: online witchis an unofficcial Lineage 3 by a diffirent company (but same bevelopment team – they left NCSoft).
To be fair i haven’t been following the development of that since i read about the code stealng debacle. So no, i didn’t know L3 was canned. Hmm, too bad. I am on the other hand just waiting for the TERA beta to kick off, because that game looks neat. Well, prostitute-demons and jolly badgers in armor aside
About that code stealing debacle – that was about the original Lineage 2 development team that had then just left and made an new studion, with their own new game. Their new game was proven to have geen developed from scratch (or at least radicaly diffirent enought code). Thant new game is now Called Terra: Online and is allready up and running in Korea. And it is pretty much what was Lineage 3 intended to be.
With all the castle sieges and player run politics system. And working jails, where lords of town will be able to throw dissdents.
i would more say that guild wars 2 is a combining of lineage 2 and guild wars from a artwork and gameplay standpoint witch is not bad at all
I cant think of a cingle thing that Guild Wars 2 takes from L2.
Though Lineage 3 was canceled, the franchise lives on for Lineage is Eternal

Have to say, that looks pretty cool. Gotta dig up some more info on that
Well, if you wanna get technical, there’s two Lineage 3s. Aion, which was made by that team before they were all shoved out the door right before completion. Or TERRA which was made by that team after they made their new studio.
Now, as we’ve seen, Aion basically is L3 and all which that entails (Grinding, ganking, scantily clad blue people).
Terra… may never see the light of day in the US since, as has come to light over recent months, was made using work product assets from when they were still at NCSoft. Really quite a shame.
Realy? But they just announced the closed beta a few weeks ago?
Actually, the lawsuits have failed to derail the released of TERA in Korea and in the US. TERA pre-orders have started despite NCSoft filing suit and the game first closed beta will begin this week.
Er from their official site:
Posted on Jan 17 by Evan.
En Masse Entertainment Announces TERA to Release in North America on May 1. Besides if there was any truth they build using any NCSoft code, the developer would have been shutdown years ago, when NCSoft sued the develper agains that ecaxt stuff.
What? I like wearing electrical tape!
Such a shame that L2 is still crawling with PKers. Is such a pretty game and I’m one of those people that grinding doesn’t really bother. But, I could not stand the constant ganking. If they had any sense, they would have tossed in a PVE server when they did the F2P change.
honestly i am the kind of person who can grind 14 hours straight if the system is fun lineage 2 combat and movement system is not and is really annoying i could only stand an hour untill i felt the need to quit this horrible game (so we all get this i have grinded WoW for 30 hours straight at a lan party)
i was also in the LKM irc chat when chaosD1 came to complain about the game and we told him that is lineage 2
