And guess what? NO OVERLAND LOADING SCREENS!

Yes, it’s me: Johnny Maloney again with an Arma III update for all (pauses for a second to count) three of you. We’ve been in the dark for some time now, the last news coming in September that the official website was going to finally launch. That news was, of course, earth shattering to such an extent that Bohemia Interactive has had to be a bit more responsible about how they release certain information. At the risk of causing a natural disaster of epic proportions, I come to you with some excellent news.

In a blog post yesterday on the Bohemia Interactive website, Project Lead Daniel Musil had a few choice words about the state of development. The bad news is that they’ve pushed the release date back, but a closer reading instills me with more confidence, rather than disappointment. Padding the news of delay, Musil writes of an influx of new talent joining the team, claiming its strength as more potent than ever. Evidence of this strength appears as fully implemented DX10/11 integration, fully working PhysX support, UI redesign (I might actually be able to get people to play Arma III without having to stand over their shoulder and instruct them!), and a fairly interesting small list of things they’ve learned from expansions released for its predecessor.

The most exciting thing announced is perhaps the “Community Alpha” they have plans to release to fans of the series after their appearance at E3 this year. Why do this:

Musil explains

It’s intended to enable people who’d like to try the game early on in development help us to shape it up – and make Arma 3 the greatest release of the series. Ours is a large and complex game – being developed by a relatively small team – so we really appreciate your opinions, thoughts and feedback.

The Community Alpha will be quite limited in terms of the assets it includes, with the goal of providing enough content to experiment with the brand new bits of gameplay and technology. It also enables our passionate community to prepare their mods for the very latest version of the Real Virtuality engine. Then, later on in the year, we’d like to open up our game up even further with a more extensive beta program. The exact details, however, we intend to set out closer to their launch.

I like it, I tells ya. I like it a lot. Have a read at the blog yourself for the full story. There’s also some other screenshots, including some impressive night-lighting effects.

Johnny Maloney

Having been a gamer since 1986 when his father brought home an IBM PCjr with King's Quest and Crossfire included, it seemed destined that PC gaming and Johnny Maloney's life would run parallel forever. Despite his occasional affairs with movies, books, music and single malt scotch, he's never once left the side of his PC. In fact, on a full moon on a friday the thirteenth, if you sit in his old chairs... chills will run up your spine if you say "you fight like a dairy farmer," and you can sometimes hear ghostly whispers in the night respond "how appropriate, you fight like a cow…" -- Attempting to contact Johnny at Johnny@Blisteredthumbs.net may be successful.

TLDR; They pushed back the release date because they want to make the game better?

Commence rage. Better games are for nubes.

Would you release the hounds on me if I said that I have never heard of this game until now?

Not at all, the Arma games are certainly pretty niche. I’m usually loathe to even call them first person shooters because of the level of depth required to play them. They’re more like military simulators. Arma II is one of my favourite titles of the past ten years, with tons of moddability, depth, and incredible moments.

They’re certainly not for everybody, but there’s practically nothing out there that does it quite like, or better than them. If you’re interested, there are plenty of videos up on Youtube with some epic battles. I’ve been following Arma III very closely for my own benefit.

This is it: sixteen minutes of the game that Johnny thinks you’re not going to enjoy playing at all, but you really should, even if you’ll hate it, but it’s really good.

Once upon a time there was light in my life, but now there’s only love in the dark. Nothing I can say, a total eclipse of the Arma III new lighting features demonstration. Yes, I’m pretty sure those are the lyrics.
