The PSP is home to a number of packs, bundles, remakes, and collections. While most of these games were fantastic, many people criticized the PSP for not having more original titles. However, of all the collections and remakes released during the system’s lifespan, many would argue that Castlevania: The Dracula X Chronicles was the best of all. This 2-in-1 game came with an updated remake of Rondo of Blood as well as one of the most celebrated games in the series, Symphony of the Night.

This collection was quite the treat, not only for giving us Symphony of the Night on the go, but also for releasing Rondo of Blood in North America. The original game was released in 1993 on the PC Engine in Japan. Gameplay was much more reminiscent of the first three Castlevania titles on the NES. You could only whip horizontally, items and hearts were more valuable, and bosses were tough as balls. If you’ve ever beat this game, pat yourself on the back. That’s one hell of an accomplishment.

Symphony of the Night on the other hand could not be any more different. This was the entry that coined the term “Metroid-vania”, mainly for its upgrade system and exploration element. You play as Dracula’s son, Alucard, and explore Castlevania in a very non-linear fashion. Certain areas of the castle were only accessible after obtaining a certain item or ability. The action was much more frantic and intense than past entries. There were also some RPG-light elements that included leveling up and improving your stats. I don’t think it would be much of a stretch to say this is the most popular game in the Castlevania franchise.

you’ll fight bosses like this the entire game. and it is awesome.

If you own a PSP and don’t own this game, do yourself a favor and pick it up. You can easily find it for less than $20 and it’s worth every penny. Not only do you have two of the greatest Castlevania titles in one game, you have them both on the go. The value in this collection is insane. Considering this is the first officially-released version of Rondo of Blood in North America, it makes for a great piece in anyone’s collection. This game got me through a freezing night stuck in a Chinese airport. I can only imagine what adventures it might hold for you.

Another nice touch was the total redub of SOTN’s voiceover work. No more hammy over the top voicework, you could actually take this dub seriously. =P

But that made SOTN special to me.

Without that voice acting it just won’t be the same

WHAT IS A MAN!? A miserable pile of secrets! But enough talk, HAVE AT YOU!

I just want to thank this game, as it allowed me to play Symphony of the Night for the first time. This game is really just plain awesome.

I’m presently replaying all the handheld Castlevania’s and played X Chronicles between the GBA trilogy and the DS Trilogy (currently playing Dawn of Sorrow) and the new versions of Rondo and SOTN were a joy to play. I don’t know what Konami has planned for the 3DS but I can hope it’s more 2D than 3D.

I need to get Rondo of Blood. :O

I’m not a huge castlevania fan but I think I should become one soon.

Is it really that much easier to get in the US? Because this collection is considered rare as f*ck in Germany, mostly because Symphony of the Night was never released on our PSN Store and now the Chronicles runs for prizes, that would make PS2 ICO feel ashame of it self.

    Last time I checked it ran for 50 € new (that’s $66.29!)

You can’t imagine how happy I felt, when I found a single used copy of this game at my local game dealer for 15 €. Pumped many hours in this sucker. Completed every game at least twice, but I have to admit: Never beat Dracula as Richter, even though I have next to no problems with Maria.
On the other hand I never completed SotN as Maria :D

There are so many great things about this collection, I can’t even name everything. For instance, you can swap the music tracks for every single level in the RoB remake and replace them with unlocked tracks from the Original or even SotN.

Or the weirdest bonus of them all: They included the “Error game” Akumajyo Dracula Peke, that would show up on the PC Engine, if you tried to input the game disc in an old generation of the console with the wrong graphics adapter installed.

I spent so many hours on this game, couldn’t agree more that it’s one of the best bundles + remakes there is on the system. I was really glad to have gotten it when I got my PSP.

Even the original version of RoD is a terrific game, the multiple paths, having to rescue the ladies or breezing thru the game once you unlocked Maria. It’s really worth a try for those who haven’t picked this up.
