I admit, it irks me that I need to write “Syndicate classic,” or else certain dim people might think that a website dedicated to classic PC gaming might be releasing a current-gen FPS a full month before it’s supposed to hit the market. I’m not insinuating that our readers are dullards, but you know, there’s always that ONE guy.
You did read right, however, Syndicate, the isometric, dystopian cyberpunk classic from aeons past (namely the year 1993) will be available for legitimate purchase and download off of purveyor of old school PC gems, Good Old Games. Priced at $5.99 USD, it appears it has come just in time to drum up a little bit of publicity for Electronic Arts’ new FPS, expected to hit the ground on the 21st of February. They’re even conducting a contest for enthusiasts, where those registered at GOG.com can assemble and design their own team of agents, with the top ten receiving free copies of the game, once it releases this Thursday, January 19th.
Now I’ll have two copies of Syndicate – one to take out in public, go bicycle riding with, have picnics, play whist, and another one for cool winter nights to cuddle up with by the fire for those private moments. Don’t be shy if you’ve never had a chance to play the original Syndicate, everybody ought to at least have a look see at what Peter Molyneux was capable of doing before he became an industry stereotype. You’ll never believe this, but he used to design these things called “Games.”

Ah good old Syndicate.
I remember when we got the game with one of our computers back in the 90′s.
I absolutely love the cyberpunk setting in the game and the intro is quite the nostalgic trip.
Too many fps on market…Why they don’t keep this style… Another fps multiplayer feature will die slowly after few month …
Alright! I’ve been looking forward to gog getting Syndicate on the roster for a loooong time.
It’s funny because I have a hankering for gauss gunning every sentient in sight. How do these things keep happening?
Wait, Peter Molyneux worked on this one? I didn’t even know that!
Anyway, marked for acquisition for later on my wishlist. It has been blank since the big Christmas sale last month.
Still…after all the hype they build up for the reveal, I kinda expected System Shock.
The intellectual rights for System Shock have now passed into the realm of “nobody has any idea.” There’s been a lot of tussle over who it belongs to, and the like.
When Warren Spector made his deal with EA, EA gained the TRADEMARK of System Shock, but Looking Glass retained the rights. When LGS closed, their assets (including the System Shock copyrights) defaulted to their insurance provider. EA still has the trademark, but to re-release the game you’d need both companies to agree on it – same reason why System Shock 3 looks like a faint ghost of FPS future, if you get my drift.
Rumor has it that the insurance company is interested in selling the rights, but all the reading I’ve done has suggested that they want a cut of revenue, rather than price the IP and sell it outright; which sounds like something EA wouldn’t be interested in providing.
I’m quite happy with Syndicate, myself, but who can say for sure if we’ll see System Shock level out in the future. It could be that EA’s Syndicate FPS goes very well, Bioshock Infinite does too, and somebody at EA sees merit in reviving the franchise, even AT a hefty cost. Time will tell…
Wow, the Syndicate remake is available on Good Old Games a whole month before it’s released?! Awesome!
Suprised we haven’t banned this one too…
Seriously peeved at our legal system right now. I just know the Shadowrun reboot won’t make it here either, and that really hurts.
Time to light the fires under the R18 debate again. It’s going far too slow.
But anyway. Back on topic.
I think I’ll pick this up. I haven’t played the original Syndicate due to it being tough as nails to find nowadays. And since we won’t be getting it, I may just have to be happy with the original.
