The resurgence of the platformer appears to be in full swing nowadays, with the popularity of titles like Super Meat Boy, the recently released Dustforce, and the sometimes described as best-platformer-of-the-year, Rayman Origins, which Ubisoft has decided is going to make the trek to PCs this spring.
Available for pre-purchase already on the Ubisoft Shop, for the low, low price of $29.99 CDN (why Canadian? It’s because the store website defaulted to that location, being where I live and all). Featuring drop in and out cooperative play, in over 60 levels of what appears to be beautifully crafted art, Rayman Origins will arrive on PCs in North America on March 29th, 2012 (March 30th, in Europe).
But wait a minute! This is Ubisoft we’re talking about! What about the DRM, the signed blood pacts, the secret handshakes and gilt goblets full of sacrificial entrails to be consumed in dark rituals? It doesn’t appear to say anything about it on the website, so I’ll be sure to keep a close eye focused in its general direction as the release date creeps ever nearer. In the meantime, yaaaaaay, Rayman Origins on PC! In the meantime, you could wander over to GOG.com and check out Rayman Forever (the renamed original), Two or Three.
EDIT: It appears as though an Ubisoft employees twitter feed confirms that retail copies of the game will be completely DRM free. Digital download versions are likely to have Uplay activation codes, or possibly even Steamworks – more details as the situation develops (Thanks, Mivey!)

YATA!
Dose anybody know If thee UBIart framework will be open source or available to the public in any way? I’ve read a lot of conflicting articles, some saying that Ubisoft simply has to draw up a license agreement, others only saying that the creators want it to be available and a trailer for Rayman Origins hinting that that would be the chase, could any body help clarify this or would any one form Blistered Thumbs reach out to Ubisoft and try to get an answer?
Other than dragging out some lame ass character that no one cared about, how is this “retro”?
Hard to get excited over the prospect of a game so full of DRM that it’ll feel like i’m getting a cavity search everytime I play it. But if they say and prove that this will have no DRM i’ll fucking buy this, hell i’ll even pick an extra copy for a friend. Ok, maybe not, but i’d buy it.
Awesome! Really wanted to play this game, now I’ll be able to.
Now to hope for no DRM. *fingers crossed*
On a Ubisoft PC game? It’s gonna have DRM out the ass. It’s gonna have DRM that makes your PC explode if you enter the word “Pirate” into a search engine and then notifies the police that you’re a child molester.
What? You say you were just doing research on Blackbeard and you’ve never molested a child? Well too bad son! It also steals your social security number right out of your wallet and then makes up a police report where you kidnapped an entire bus full of 6 year old nuns and held them in your satanic pirate dungeon for 18 months before selling them to Iranian human slave traders in exchange for yellow cake uranium.
You say there’s no evidence, you want a lawyer? Ha, this is American boy and you’re a human slave trading, child nun molesting, Satan worshiping, nuclear weapon making, pirate terrorist now! And God help you if you own any games with anime elf girls, cause then you’re in the REALLY deep shit.
“We’re announcing Rayman Origins for PC right the hell now! Also, retail versions will have NO DRM. None, zero, zip. Ohemgee!”
