She has to be 30 now, right?

Well it is official, EverQuest, one of the first ever MMORPGS to grace the PC market and the flagship franchise of Sony Online, is going free to play after nearly thirteen years in operation.

The announcement was confirmed by Thom Terazzas, an EverQuest Producer who stated that the long running MMO shall go free to play on it’s thirteenth birthday, March 16th. Other features has also been touted by Terazzas, including an improved map system, a unique summon for returning players who come back to the fold after the Free to Play version launches, some experiences potions, and of course, extra birthday events for the game world!

In Terazzas own words, “We’re excited to be expanding the EverQuest experience by making the game more accessible to every type of player so that you can choose to play the game in a way that suits you best. Anyone who wishes to start, return or continue to play one of the “Best Games of All-Time” can simply download and play EverQuest on their terms – think of it as Free to Play, Your Way.”

He is not joking about that “Best Games of All-Time” line. EverQuest won numerous awards between 1999 and 2008, and already has 18 expansions to the game, the latest being Veil of Alaris which was released in November of 2011. Who knows, maybe we can start a Blistered Thumbs guild and take the world for our own by storm…early polygonal graphics and all.

The only purpose Everquest serves for me now is so that I can tell “Back in my day” stories to co-workers & friends I play mmo’s with about walking to school and home, uphill both ways through placeholder mobs and unforgiving drop percentages for hours at a time, only to be wiped by a train & lose your level.

It was a good product back when it didn’t have competition, but the market is full of better games today.

I agree with you wholeheartedly! I have serious bad memories about playing this game 9-10 years ago. The fact that Everquest still exists is beyond my ability to comprehend; not even taking into consideration that the game has been charging players for the “privilege” to play it for the last 13 years, just wow. Also, you only get to play a severely restricted version of the game for free? No thank you, Sony, no thank you. Just say no to Everquest. I haven’t been off of the E for 9 years to get back on now.

From what I understand, Everquest will have some of the worst free-to-play restrictions yet. Only four races with four classes… replace each “four” with “sixteen” and that’s what paying customers get. I was considering checking it out until I heard about this.

    This is… so pointless.

I loved me some EQ back in the day.. and even played on one of the progression servers as recently as October.. but if I had never played this game before or hadn’t played it in years, after being brought up on stuff like WoW, I think the game would be impenetrable for a new person to get into.

Not to mention, even though the game is slightly less insane compared to the pre-WoW era, it’s still that game that you have to devote huge chunks of your life, time commitments so large it would make even the most hard-core to the bone WoW player look like a baby who’s just smacking the keyboard while mommy is watching Judge Judy, to even dream of being an “end game” player.

Also, I can’t speak for the “normal” servers, but I know the progression ones are basically at the mercy of 10boxers who have almost every raid mob worth killing on permanent lockdown. Though, free players cant play on those servers anyway, so I suppose that doesn’t matter too much
