It is no secret that a lot of fans of the X-Com franchise have been very…vocal about the recent direction 2K Marin and THQ have decided to take the series. The reboot simply titled XCOM has been met with scathing opinions since the first video was released. Since then the game has been delayed for a release in Q2 of 2012, and scantly a peep has been heard since.
Well, a new challenger approaches. One that already has a leg up by virture of being a strategy game.
Firaxis Games, famous for pretty much working on the Sid Meiers series of Strategy games, from Alpha Centuri to Civilization V, have been revealed to be making their own XCOM title, aptly named XCOM: Enemy Unknown. The recent Game Informer cover has broken the ice on the new title, which is slated for a fall release this year. Other than the fall release for the Xbox 360, PS3 and the PC, nothing else has been revealed on the title, meaning we will need to wait for Game Informer to come out to learn more. Speculation is already flying on this being a remake of the original game because of the same title, which is very plausible. But, there is no way of knowing for sure.
So to recap for everyone, there will be two XCOM games coming out this year at the moment. One is a reboot that borrows first person shooter and RPG elements combined to make a quasi-tactical experience, while the other is a possible remake of the original title using the same strategy-simulation elements that made it memorable. So other than the fact that both games have likely been in development for at least two years, and they both are based on the same franchise, they are totally different from each other in terms of mechanics and design. Oh boy…
All I can say now is this is going to get interesting this year…very interesting.
| PROS: | Great shooting mechanics, Paintball is fun, Diverse gun selection |
| CONS: | Soundtrack is terrible, game has no story mode |
| WTF: | WTF Text Here |

Hmm… a generic FPS that has nothing to do with the franchise roots… or a new take on a classic strategy title… decisions, decisions.
XCOM is dead since Gollop was bought out, even when people claim they can make a good strategy game based on XCOM it wouldnt be the same as it was till Apocalypse.

I have never played the original XCOM, so I’m definitely going to try this one when it releases as well as the FPS one (if 2K games is still going through with it.) Let’s just hope it doesn’t end up as a POS or a mediocre game.
Hell yeah! Now this will be the Xcom game I am looking forward to. Though with my luck it will turn out to be a complete POS… x(
Unless the first round starts off like this, (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TAAWU6gSPJA) people will complain about it being too easy.
However, I am honestly looking forward to this, even if i do end up sucking at it like I usually do. At least THIS announcement doesn’t automatically convince me not to play it like how Spoony described the E3 XCOM presentation.
Considering how much of a trainwreck Civilization V, aka Panzer General wannabe, was, I’m not too excited about Firaxis’s projects.
You see, they don’t have Soren Johnson anymore. But, they also got rid of Jon Shafer, so at least they’re not starting off on a bad foot here.
Now the only question is which should I start with when these games come out?
The second I saw this the first thing I thought was “SPOONY HAS BEEN VINDICATED!”.

Pervert ಠ_ಠ
*Just shit his pants*
I expect all articles in this game’s Ufopedia to have realistic, borderline tl;dr descriptions. Everyone will love it – and I will be first in line.
Spoony! Get your ass back here! Look- HOPE! HOPE!
…And so, Spoony’s inbox was filled with the cry of a thousand emails all yelling “hope!”
Wait wait wait wait…Firaxis Games? As in Sid Meier’s Alpha Centauri Firaxis Games?
…Seth, grab my wallet! We’re pre-ordering NOW!
…Now I just pray it comes out for PC…
Pray no more, it’s confirmed for pc.
*Doing a very bad impression of Keanu Reeves*
Excellent!

Hm, I might just have to try this out. Never played any X-COM games before, but I’m always interested in strategy games, and the fact that this will have console versions makes it much easier for me to play (my computer is old and usually can’t play new PC games these days, and I have little incentive to upgrade it since there aren’t many that interest me).
If you’re interested in checking out the original (X-Com: UFO Defense) it’s on sale right now on Steam for under $2. I’d really recommend picking it up, it’s a great game that’s aged pretty well, and since it’s so old you can run it on pretty much anything.
Oh and one more thing. There is a third XCOM game coming out this year. Xenonauts – give it a look.
Yes, people should. From a brief mission rundown that I saw, Xenonauts looks amazing.
I will murder you(Fraxis) if i see ANYTHING remotely resembling a bad console port.
Exactly what I was thinking when I saw it’s also on console. If they make the PC version first and can shoehorn it onto consoles god bless ‘em but if they make it from the ground up as a console game and port it to PC I think it will still upset fans wanting the good ol’ strategy game.
Looking foward to those!
In the meantime, I’ll keep on enjoying XCOM : Extraterrestrial (Gold Edition). It’s not the “good old one”, but it’s pretty close.
DOUBLE BETRAY…Ah, forget it! -_-
Last I heard, XCOM was scheduled for a release anywhere between Q2 2012 and some time in 2013… basically, that’s industry jargon for “canned”. I’d be very surprised if we actually saw the other XCOM released, especially with this news since it’s unlikely 2k Games is going to want to spread the wealth. This title basically renders the other one worthless since people are going to flock to the strategy game and not the FPS one.
The only way they were going to make money off XCOM was because X-Com fans didn’t have anywhere else to turn… but now they do. They might change the name of XCOM, though, wouldn’t surprise me one bit.
Betrayal no longer? Only if it’s good.
