This was fun to watch! It looked like you guys had fun too, and sucked JUST enough to be funny. XD

I’m really impressed by what I saw of the City Escape stage: it’s glorious nostalgia mixed with newfangled awesomeness; in other words, THE BEST. Though admittedly, the snowboard is pretty weird out of context.

I’m getting the 3DS version of this game, so I hope it’s as good as what you guys played!

The 3DS version is a completely different game that’s not very well received. It currently has a Metacritic score of 65/100 which is much worse than any previous Sonic platformer on a Nintendo handheld.

Other people have already echoed my sentiments on here but…. I watched the first few videos.

I want to whack you all with a giant paper fan.

LAY OFF THE SPEED BUTTON! … I know that sounds like blasphemy in a Sonic game, but you guys have no style! Are you even trying? I’m inclined to think no. And sorry but button mashing may not be problematic in the earliest levels it will get you killed layer on though.

And I’m sorry, but if most of you haven’t played a Sonic game in a while, that’s fine. If you did snag his dud games, that’s fine too, but I just feel the taint of it seeped into this and to an extent it sucked the fun out of watching this.

Now, I did see some smiles and some fun and happiness but…

I guess this is why I haven’t gotten far in your Let’s Plays. I suppose intentionally playing bad or only half-assing it might be funny and amusing, but I just feel like Sonic’s been kicked enough while he’s down.

The level design here really is very solid, and if you were trying a fraction harder you’d find that the alternate paths have much more opportunity for speed and thrills. And that’s for both 2.5D and 3D stages. I admit I didn’t finish heroes, and only played a level of 06, but this game really is so much better. It deserves better than this.

Personaly it took a while for this game to grow on me. It was quite frsutrating but now that I can remeber the layout of the stages they have become more fun but it’s like what Yahtzeee said about FF XIII. I don’t think it should have took so long for a game to eventualy get fun.

Still in short; the stages do get fun eventualy , the music is sweet but Sega was always good at that, the option to play old and newer stages with Classic and Modern gameplay is brilliant and the fight against Chaos is great.
But there are to few bosses, there should have been one as a act 3 for each of the levels and Sonic himself is so…ungodly annoying, ever since Colors everything he says is annoying, like a tenager whos desperate to be seen as funny except he is not.

I’m pretty tired at people complaining about slow sections in Sonic games, considering that they have been present from the earliest Sonic games onwards. In fact the first Sonic game on Mega Drive (Genesis for you Americans) probably had more slow sections than fast ones. Both fast and slow pace have their place in the games.

But yeah, Sonic shouldn’t talk or have too intricate storylines.

I’ve never seen anyone above the age of six fail to understand how a Sonic game works, let alone react with “I don’t understand this, so I’ll stop reading explanations”. This was kind of special.

I made an account just to comment on these videos. (I’m a major Sonic fan. >_>) This was the first time I watched this series and I found the videos really entertaining largely because of how awful you guys were at the game. I was laughing so hard when you were failing that balloon mission so badly. I think I S ranked that on a first try. Hint: Pressing the circle button while in the air will allow you to slam you down quickly.

It was also interesting to see the differences between the PC version and the PS3 version. Loading a level takes like 2 seconds on the PC version and I didn’t even know there was a loading period for saving because it’s so quick. Certainly makes me glad I played it on PC. ^_^ Also, that weird angle glitch happens on the PC version as well. Really strange glitch and I have no idea how the hell Sega missed that. Also strange a bug allowed you to skip Chemical Plant Act 1. I wanted to see your reactions to it.

You guys should have played the PC version. It looks a lot better than it does on consoles, runs at 60 frames per second as opposed to 30 frames per second, has minimal load times, and it’s only $30 on Steam. The PC version does have a couple of issues the PS3 version doesn’t have though. Chemical Plant has really bad lag issues for most people and the Modern Sonic Rouge level crashes the game for some gamers depending on their hardware. It also lacks Sonic 1. :( Other than those issues, it’s the superior version.

One of the great things about the franchise in general is the fact it’s a fast paced platformer. Like one of the commenters mentioned, it would be nothing but a racing game (except without any racing) if it weren’t for the platforming sections. Trying to boost like crazy through levels is likely to get you killed but if you’re skilled enough, it’s amazing how fast you can get through nearly everything and it’s quite satisfying. Here’s an impressive video of Modern Sonic’s Speed Highway done by a really good player. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=22FPfNabQYY While some people don’t like the fact you have to get good at levels to do anything that remarkable, it was the same way with 2D Sonic. The franchise since its inception has always been really fun for speed runs and Generations is no exception.

Hopefully part 14 will actually get uploaded soon. You guys should go back to this game, play through Chemical Plant Act 1 (it’s really easy but very fun), and then play through the rest of the game. I’d watch it. :D You guys were already about halfway through it anyways. >_> It’s a damn short game, but because of all the missions, collectables, and S ranking, I’ve put over 35 hours into it. Really great game, especially the PC version since it lacks some of the console version’s problems.

Uh, no. That isn’t what he said in the slightest. The PC version is generally regarded as being the superior version by fans and reviewers alike since it has shorter loading times, better graphics, and is $20 cheaper. And don’t forget, you can use a USB controller.

However, the requirements are kind of high. That’s the only reason I went for the PS3 version instead.

@shane-o live2win: Most of my response wasn’t even about the PC version. I brought up that version largely to point out some of the differences and that one of the major complaints they had is nowhere to be found on the superior version. Also, while Sonic is generally viewed as a console franchise, the series has had a ton of PC ports over the years and the first Sonic games I ever owned were on PC. What’s nice about Generations is that it’s the first time time a major Sonic titled released around the same time as its console versions and it’s a strong port too. I play it with my PS3 controller using MotioninJoy and it controls great.

@PhunkyPhazon: Yeah, I forgot to mention the really high specs, but I figured the people in this video series probably have access to a pretty kickass computer that could handle the game.

        @Dr_Shenanigans Thanks for the link.

Fraser, I love you and your show, but this was kind of painful to watch. I know you prefer speeding through Sonic games, but that’s not what it’s about. Sonic is a platforming game first and foremost. If you take away the platforming, all you’re left with is a racing game. Also, you seemed to judge the game and its difficulty based on your very poor skill playing it. Contrary to what you think, boosting every second is only going to get you killed faster and you need to learn when to homing attack and when to boost in order to take full advantage of the numerous alternate routes. Also, you don’t need to memorize the levels in order to be skilled at them and beat them on the first try, you’ve just got to take your time when you come upon a platforming section. Simply speeding through it will result in more lost lives, as evidenced here. This game is not difficult when you try not to speed through it mindlessly.

Another thing I was bothered by is your repetitive “LOLZ, SONIC CHARECTARS KEESING!” and “LOLZ! DAT FANBASE SOORE IS WEERD!” jokes. We get it. Furries exist, there are some weird Sonic fans out there, and Sonic 06 happened. Repeating the same jokes over and over isn’t going to make them any funnier. Your continuous harping on Modern Sonic also grew tiring. Also, don’t claim what makes sense and doesn’t make sense in City Escape until you play the original game it’s from.

Also, your comment about just being able to speed through all Mario games without being forced to do any missions is inaccurate. In Super Mario 64, Sunshine, Galaxy, and Galaxy 2 you have to complete challenges in order to get a certain number of stars to progress and in New Super Mario Bros. Wii you need to get a certain number of Star Coins in order to play the last few levels. Plus, Generations is only asking that you complete ONE challenge per level, and they’re a lot easier than you made them out to be. It’s not that bad. Just saying.

I’m sorry to write such a critical comment when this show is about having fun watching you guys goof around, but just watching you harping on the game left and right made me more and more disappointed by this episode. I was looking SO forward to this one, too. Oh, well. I hold no ill will or offense toward you, I’m going to continue to watch and enjoy this show, and I hope that my comment has helped you to understand the game a bit better. All the best to you guys.

I’m pretty sure on every VGA episode there’s at least one comment that has the words “this was painful to watch” in it. With lots of thumbs up.

They’re usually alongside the “God, you’d think Fraser would at least do some research on the game he’s playing” comments.

To be honest, I think you guys were a bit unfair towards the cinematics. You started laughing the second Sonic said one word without even giving the voice acting a chance. I mean if you think this is bad, you should go watch stuff from Sonic Heroes or Sonic 2006. Now THAT is some atrocious dog crap.

It just seems to me like there’s a lot of baggage left over from stuff like that. I find the story and cinematics from Sonic Colors and this to be a trillion times better in every way possible.

Moving on, I like seeing people enjoying Sonic games again. Hopefully we’ll never see games like Sonic 2006 or Shadow the Hedgehog again.
