Like you said Wez and Larry, I didn’t hear about Fable or project something and found the game in 2006 and played it on PC and really loved it. The world was beautiful and being evil or good was pretty new and well done. However, Fable 3 was so shit that I threw the disc in my trash can. It’s a horrible thing when games get worse as they release sequels. Another great vid, I didn’t know you guys were on TV, I think more people watch this show on the net anyways…

I didn’t think DNF wasn’t the worst game ever but it was just so…..meh. I got some fun out of it despite the loading times, the two weapons, the Call of Duty health, etc. It suffered the longest development time of any game out there so I cut it a little slack.

Daikatana on the other hand was a shit stain and nothing more.

Great video but I would have added an honerable mention for Skyrim on PS3. Skyrim on PS3 is a horribly coded piece of shit with more glitches than the pc/360 versions and such crippling lag/stutter and console freezes that it becomes unplayable in a very short time.

I wholeheartily agree with the list EXCEPT with Fable. Fable was a game that RPG fans hated and detested YET casual gamers loved. Yes,it cetainly didn’t lived up to the ginormous expectations that Molyneux was hyping it,but I still loved its atmosphere and Monty Python-esque humor.

The Too Human case was really sad, because Silicon Knights really wanted to push this IP forward and it ened up sinking them (with that awful X-Men game being the final nail in their coffin). Denis Dyack used to post regularly over at TeamXbox and discuss the story and mythology of the game.

Driv3r…yikes. I actually met one of the Newcastle devs on Xbox Live and back on February of 2004 he told that the game needed at least 8 more months of development. Not a month later Infogrames decided to publish the game ahead of schedule and the rest is history…

Daikatana… Don’t ever pronounce that game aloud. Bad things may happen…

Funny thing is that a few of these game were stuff I never heard of, Mission Impossible (I didn’t know there WAS a game on the N64) & Rise of Robots (Nope never heard of it). As for the stuff I did know about:

Fable: it was a very good game, I’m never been one for hype, and I’ve learned that Molynuex could make a blind man buy a library, as for the series I enjoyed all 3 installments (Yes even the supposedly shitty 3rd one)

Too Human: A very bad diablo-style dungeon crawler with a stupid story and annoying controls (There’s a reason for the other buttons on the controllers you know)

Daikatana: If Romero spent less time wanking off to a portrait of himself and more time actually developing his game maybe it wouldn’t have been shit

I liked Fable. It was very short & the world was really small, but for me, the humor & 2 discs of music I got off it of made up for that. Never encountered any bugs in the PC version.

Well, haven’t seen any Driv3r glitch videos yet. Guess I’m going to when this video is done.

I kind of have to laugh at the irony… this is a top 10 of overhyped games and, despite it being referred to multiple times, not one of the Halo games made the list.

Although “shit” or “shyte” doesn’t really describe them, the Halo franchise is practicly the definition of “overhyped”.

One game I’m surprised didn’t get on the list was Halo: ODST, which was shit… or more accurately, an expansion pack for the price of a full game. One of the only games in the franchise to get less than a 7/10 from most critics.

Although I would rate most of the franchise as a respectable 8/10, if I was a professional reviewer saying this, I’d be lambasted by hate mail and even death threats from the “Halotards” that I didn’t give into the hype machine and not give it a perfect 10. That isn’t even how bad the hype machine gets for all of this!

I remember earning college money by working at a local 7-11 around the time Halo 2 came out. It was pretty bad that the store was advertised like mad… but there was no place I couldn’t turn without having Halo 2 shoved in my face before launch. Major newspapers even had front page headlines about the game coming out. The game was being advertised by pretty much everyone as “The biggest event in gaming”… going so far as to have televised release parties as if it were friggin New Year’s Eve!

Overhyped? You’re damned well right it is!

And the hype just keeps on coming…

Microsoft, realizing that all of it’s exclusives are leaving or ending, decided to uncover Chief’s corpse and roll it around for another 3 games… and people are acting like this is a good thing…

…despite the story was supposed to have ended…
…despite the fact that Bungie is not working on this one…

But still, the fanboys eat this shit for breakfast… and I’m sure the game will sell like hotcakes no matter how lazy Microsoft is to make it. After all, it has “Halo” in the title – the kids won’t care.

this list is mostly a top 10 WORST games with the restrition of the games getting high hype treatment.

This list is fantastic. I definitely enjoy the corny puns at the beginning of each entry. :-D

To get my geek on for a second, though, I will point out something about the Rise of the Robots bit. Androids are robots that are shaped like humans. A CYBORG is part robot, part human. Therefore, Cyrax and Sektor are cyborgs. I wouldn’t call Jax a cyborg, as he’s not robotic. He just has prosthetic enhancements.

I would still call him a cyborg, since the arms do give him some incredible abilities in combat. If the arms merely provided him with simple functionality, that I would call prosthesic (although that is far beyond what current prosthesis can do). But these arms give him super strength and other combat abilities.

Hey, I really liked the first Fable… not that I ever paid attention to the hype and promises that go along with such games. If you take the series as a whole you’ll see a remarkable decline, like an asteroid made of Molyneux turds plummeting upon the Earth. What other series have stunk at such a pace? Can’t think of any off the top of my head… but the Fable series has definitely become my biggest gaming disappointment of all time.

Also, for anything that claims to be a killer of anything… just run in the other direction.

DN Forver certanly wasn’t a great game, but it wasn’t a shit game either.
It’s average….yet people’s ramped-up expectations cased them to over-react (as internet poeple often do). Apparently, some though thst 12 years in development must mean it will be 3-4 times better than everything else – as redicolous as it is.

It wasn’t super-amazing, it wasn’t ganre-defining. It didn’t stand out in regards to mechanics or similar. But when you compare it will all the other shooters out there… it was a simple and funny shooter. Nothing special. Nothing horrificly terrible either.

And anyone that sez oherwise is a moron.

I beg to differ. The WAY over-the-top “ironic” sexism was pretty horrifying to me, coming to a head in the Hive level. Capture the Babe was bad too, if more embarrassingly chauvinist than offensively so. There may have been some great Duke moments scripted into the game, and Duke’s humor was my favorite part of 3D, but this game just took everything to an entirely unnecessary level.

Well yes, that was a gag movie poster in the theater level of Duke Nukem 3D. Obviously it’s a send-up of 1970s exploitation films, many of which had titles of equal or greater ridiculousness. I think comparing a gag movie poster to women being gratuitously raped and impregnated by aliens to the point the hero has to actively put them all down is just a wee bit like apples and oranges, don’t you? Besides, I didn’t even actually play Duke Nukem 3D until it came out on XBox Live. I have not beaten, it however.

What I would be interested in is to see someone who has played both games publish a comparison of the chauvinist tones in each. Whereas the former game was applauded for its approach to humor and use of a satirically meatheaded and misogynist protagonist, the latter game is popularly reviled for much the same reasons. Both games have women in alien pods begging for death, but while I was disturbed by their appearance in 3D, I found it gave me more of an alien-horror vibe than a disgusting-rapey vibe.

Have you seen the concept art for the hive pods in DNF? Just look it up, you should find one position labeled “rear entry.” Yeah, that was seriously considered.

The reason DN3D came off less “icky” to you, is because of the level fo detail. Pixelated graphic hid msot of it. You said it yourself – women were impragnated in DN3D and killed too. Yet it wasn’t as detailed. Taht it the onnyl real difference.

And evne IF DNF was more chauvenistic – that doesn’t make it bad game. That’s a subjective prefference. Far too many peopel dont’ know the difference between “I don’t like it” and “It sucks”. Likewise, many dont’ know the difference ebtween “I like it” and “best game EVUR!”
Which is why on review sites you see redicolous scores like 10/10 and 1/10. Those score – there illogical extreemes – have no place in any sensible review.

Unless you are capable of hating/loving a game and still rating it objective, you have no buisness reviewing games. There’s plenty of games I ADORE that I would never rate more than 8/10. ther’s games I HATE that I’d never rate lower than 5/10. Both on Angry Joe’s sensible rating scale, where 5 is average.
Yet sadly, too many people are incapable of being objective.

DN3D came out in a time when that kind of stuff was the norm. DNF on the other hand doesn’t have that same privilege. The simple way to put this to rest is this: Duke Nukem 3D was akin to Ren and Stimpy or Rocko’s Modern Life and DNF is like Vampire Sucks kind of humor. Long loading times is bullshit in this day and age.

A bad game is a bad game. Simple as that. To me being average or just a disappoint doesn’t cut it anymore. There are way too many great games out there to allow terrible mediocrity.

Cubey and CrunchBogus are right on the money.

Frankly Duke has no right to bash Halo when his own game is a giant turd or any other game for that manner. At least master Chief gets work done without being an asshole.

Hell Saint Rows leaves Duke Nukem in the dust and does comedy a whole lot better with better gameplay.

I mean, it was the first Final Fantasy game on this generation of consoles and every Final Fantasy game has been better than other generic (J)RPGs on the market at the time. So when FF13 came out I was so full of glee that I bought it without even glancing at the reviews. It’s Final Fantasy, so it has to be good. And I have never been so disappointed in my life.

I personally wouldn’t call about half of the list terrible games, some of them are alright, not great or terrible, but alright.

When I think terrible or total trash games, I think of games that got scores of under 3-4.

I love it when companies try to hype their games by calling them a killer of a certain game.

I remember that the first Dark Cloud was called a Zelda killer, which was just weird, since when the game was released, it didn’t really have anything in common with the Zelda series at all. It had more in common with the great SNES game Soul Blazer. It was still a great game though, and the second Dark Cloud was even better.

I agree as well. Fable I enjoyed when it came out (far moreso than its sequels), but when you consider some of the crazy claims it made, primarily to beat-out Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind (if you recall, both were released for PC and XBOX around the same time), then compare the steps both made (regardless if you liked or hated either title), Fable definitely failed to live up to the hype.

Though even today, I wouldn’t call Fable “total trash” as the article suggests. Just mediocre to maybe just above average, like the rest of the replies seem to be reflecting.

I disagree. While I think Morrowind is a great sequel to Daggerfall, I also think that Fable II has a lot more “feeling”. Fable is much more stylish graphically and pretty much everything in game kick you inside the story, while as far as I know, The elder scrolls series still doesn’t have a title that has so much power (even if I have not played skyrim and I think that Morrowind is an awesome Rpg)
