So I read your Jan. 4th Off Week Update post on your site, ChaosD1. Looking back on my comment now, I have to apologize sheepishly as I’m a clear offender of complaint 2 on the list. As for everything else, I have to shake my head in shame as several of those complaints were just semantics, and the first was just ignorance. I was especially disgusted at complaint 4, which made me think that most likely many of the obsessive comments you were getting were likely from players from the Freedom server. Freedom is probably the closest to that annoying, elitist, trolling server people dread when playing MMOs. (Bite me, Freedom players.)
Anyways, despite being an offender of complaint 2, I never meant any ill will towards your review. Many of your points were valid from the point of view of a new, free player, and I especially enjoyed the mention of the Virtue server. (It being my home) I say you did a great job on the review overall.
I do have to point out the “honorable mention” though…While it’s true that the game’s “loot” system is a crafting system, I feel that the P2P enhancement recipes closely follow that “loot” system you have in mind, close enough that I think even you would feel it’s about the same. Even the best enhancement recipes in the game are ironically called “purple recipes”. However, it’s definitely not F2P. This is mostly just food for thought, not really a disagreement.
Champions Online is very similar, very.
Thanks for the very fair review of the game from the perspective of a new player, although there is one thing I have to disagree on. If I understand correctly, your reasoning behind calling the game slow paced is because of the long cooldown times on many of the powers (or “spells”) given to you. Early on in the game, especially as a completely new player (veterans gain inherent powers to help out in the early levels), I can see why you would say that, however the game has a surprising amount of depth to it. If long cooldowns are your problem, you can build your character specifically to reduce the cooldown times on your powers, and there are many options for that, so much so that at very high levels, if built correctly, you will never stop activating your powers until the enemy has been defeated. Enhancements play a big role in building your character so that you can work your way around any problem you might have with your character, even making yourself so powerful that you can solo content geared for full teams of 8 with enemies +4 levels above you, or even solo some of those massive bosses you mentioned. (Called Giant Monsters in-game)
Have you tried LOTRO (Lord Of The Rings Online)? It’s only recently gone Free-to-Play and has a good variety of things to do when you’re not grinding, such as farming, music or housing. Thats on top of the World Of Warcraft feel it has and similar loot system, with auto attacks ;D
This reminds me of Champions Online, but with better story and system. Looks fun to play though, the exp system is definately a lot better than dc universe and Champions online. Maybe I should give it a try, in fact I’ll try it right now. Cya!

It’s also the episode I’ll be putting up here on BT next week.
You’re in luck ChaosD1, Guild Wars 2 has a side kick system.
Another great look at an MMO from ChaosD1.
I have to say, you do seem to be relaxing a little more in recent videos. It’s good to see. I always liked your no-nonsense, blunt delivery and hope you maintain that, but it’s good to see you chuckle and smile every so often too.
I’ve been interested in getting back into MMO’s, but after my addiction to Guild Wars, I’m reticent. Watching the MMO Grinder does allow me to see what else is out there, and I enjoy it for that reason.
So thanks for doing what you do, ChaosD1.
That was a really good review. It was balanced and hit on most of the major parts of the game. I’ve been playing CoH since 2008, and can attest to the loyalty of the players to the game. I agree with the freemium and free-to-play models being a bit restrictive. As a freemium player, I’m thinking of going back onto a subscription. I hate having to buy an auction house license and a crafting license every 30 days. The crafting limitation is frustrating, since without a license you not only cant craft anything, but you can’t use your crafted enhancements. At least I couldn’t. I’m also happy to be part of a group of dedicated players in “The Legendary” super group who’ve been playing the game since it came out. There’s also great resources like Virtue Verse and Paragon Wiki that seem to bring the community together.
city of heroes is the only mmo I ever played (back when it was new,) and even though that only lasted about 90 minutes it was a pretty fun experience, but I was frustrated by a failing connection and simply not being used to keyboard and mouse controls. The character creation is really cool though, I kinda wish they’d just have that thing so you could make a character to put on your desktop or something…do they have that?
I used to play this game when it had Monthly fee, and this is kinda my opinion, a bit too slow paced for a Super Hero game, but it has extremely good customization options and it really wanted to be different from the rest. It’s a fun game.
I don’t really know your show… STO just wen’t free to play, maybe you can try this one. if you really want something WoW-Like but frickin’ awesome in its own way, SWTOR but you’ll have to pay the full priiiiiiiiiiice.
Did anyone suggested Realm of The Mad God yet?
Someone did. Might have been you. I had a lot of fun with it, but it’d be hard to fit into the format. I’m sure I’ll give it something eventually… I am looking at another Browser Based game, but this one can fit into the format.
your comment regarding the loot system for one is of course from a free players PoV as a VIP u get TONS of loot salvage and recipes which allow u to make enhancements that DO NOT expire… as a VIP u have TONS more options like the option to go from hero to vigilante to villian or vice versa PLUS the alternate dimension Preatoria with tons of new content and missions NOT quests which just goes to show ur mindset is to those other fantasy games … so yeah as a Freemium player ur limited but no where near as much as on some other free games and if u play u will WANT to get the other stuff and YES our community is one of the best in any MMO
Your unpunctuated, incoherent blobs of text are doing a great disservice to your cause. And you’re really giving him shit for calling the missions quests?
I’ve been really interested in playing this game and fully seeing it in action although looks dated I can see why it was and still is popular…and sadly I understand why NCSoft is doing what it is doing, almost every game I play I see Bots in the chat for Gold Spamming..its a necessary evil in order to not be pestered about seeing those god damn messages every 5 seconds. If only MMO companies did something to where you can just block all current Bots that deal with Gold Spamming then none of this crap can effect stuff.
Though I never heard of that lawsuit Marvel pulled till now and O-o wow really? That’s low…even for them.
yes that marvel lawsuit is why they went off to create their own sad lil MMO which paled next to coh and where u can create your own unique heroes and or villains … and YES the creator is one of the best features as is our community
Your review was at best lacking the thing about CoH is YES the great stuff is PAID for they aint gonna give it away … and your ‘ooo this cool down is so slow’ yes at lower lvls as u get higher u get faster … basically YES the game is AWESOME and I say this still after 8 yrs and I still gladly give my $ and always will
As a proud member of the CoH community (virtue is my home and always will be) I was interested in your review. Needless to say, I’m glad you gave this a fair shot and I hope you enjoyed your time in the game.
Your review was spot on, and had lots of good advice.
A few months ago I reinstalled it for the sake of nostalgia, having to track down my original CD and CD-key to get my account information back, only to run into the same installer bug mentioned in the review. I figured out the problem soon enough, though.
Returning players also receive only 2 character slots, and you have to reactivate your vast amount of 2 old characters in order to play them. When I brought my two blasters back and began to play, however, I found that the game was, even on low settings, using up nearly all of my memory.
When I looked for a possible fix, I found that this change happened in 2008(the same date as the posts were from), and that “graphic improvements” demanded a “minimum” of 8-10 gigs of RAM to run this at a stable level.
What first attracted a majority of people, myself included, to this game was average stability with an older desktop computer, and now that it takes up more memory for the amount of memory that is free, there’s a bit of a problem.
As a comparison, I can run DCUO on average settings as well as Champions Online.
In my eyes, that appears ridiculous.
Try the new Star wars MMo i played a bit of it but i wouldn’t mind your thoughts on the game
I’d say you did a pretty decent job representing the game honestly. It is fun and certainly has its charms. I played it on and off over a couple years and I always seemed to get bored with it after a month or two, especially when I’ve run through the same labyrinthine office building for the millionth time.
I know I’m in the minority, but I always saw Champions Online to be a superior version of the game. However, CoH’s amount of adventuring content absolutely dwarfs CO and CO’s community is pretty rotten, especially since their F2P change over. The superiority of one over the other really depends on what you’re looking for I suppose.
Personally, I’d love to see ChaosD1 take a look at Champions also, but, like I said, I’m in a small boat on that one. But, I’d say anyone interested in the super hero MMO genre, they’re both worth trying out as they have their own strengths and weaknesses.
Still playing City of Heroes. It’s FUN! Had a good time helping you. Great review good sir. I just wish Manta’s headgear was like my avatar. Oh well. No biggie. Great work, Chaos!
