how big of a memory card will you need? we'll let you know!

I’m sure many of you are excited about the PS Vita, but have be rather put off thanks to the expensive, proprietary memory cards. Since the PS vita has no internal memory, these are required for saving games and even holding them. Those of you reading this are probably wondering how big the downloadable versions of the games will be so you know which memory card size to purchase.

After some investigating on the Japanese PlayStation store I’ve got the answers for you. Here is breakdown of game sizes for some of the hottest PS Vita titles:

  • Army Corps of Hell –                          598 MB
  • Disgaea 3: Absence of Detention –        1.6 GB
  • Dynasty Warriors Next –                     1.5 GB
  • Hot Shots Gold: World Invitational –      1.1 GB
  • Little Deviants –                                869 MB
  • Touch My Katamari –                         744 MB
  • Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3 –           1.4 GB
  • Uncharted: Golden Abyss –                  2.8 GB

Uncharted: Golden Abyss seems to be the benchmark as far as how big a game can get, coming in at just under 3GB. For those looking to store multiple games on  your  card, 4MB might not cut it. Personally, I’m probably looking at the 16 MB. The 32 GB is too big and expensive, and I could see myself filling up the 8 GB one rather quickly.

Now that you know game sizes, which memory looks right for you? Share your thoughts on all this in the comments below.

man im looking a my ps3 games and some of them dont even come close to these sizes uncharted3 (1 gig to save) killzone3 —(5 MB to save) arkham city (1750 MB to save) duke nukem forever (4600 MB to save)mortal kombat (4.00 gb to save)look at these statistics here PS3 consoles start currently at (160-320 gb) psvita is making games almost 3.00 gb already? and at small card sizes of 4 gb-32 gb seems really limited looks like vitas power is basing off saving to sd cards which explains the vita capabilitys well?

They’re still making us buy these overpriced memory sticks!? At least Nintendo had the courtesy of making the 3DS SD compatible and then including a 2 GB card inside every 3DS.

I’m not going to get the Vita at launch and just wait instead for next Christmas and hopefully the 32GB card will be in Europe by then. Sony says it won’t release it in Europe what they mean is they won’t release in Europe YET.

Nice to know these sizes. At first I thought Uncharted: Golden Abyss would be bigger then 2.8GB. Heck I thought the few you have listed would be bigger in general. As for the memory card deal. I think I am going to get the 8GB first & go from there if I really get this.

I can’t understand why everyone is so gaga over the Vita, it’s expensive as hell, and the games aren’t really all that interesting. Not to mention the AT&T fiasco.

Expensive as hell? That’d be 500$+, not 310$(along with 16GB card). And besides, what are you comparing it too? Comparing to phones/ iPods/iPads it’s not expensive at all. Comparing to 3DS it’s way better(games especially), so comparing their prices is meaningless.
About games: there’s place for interesting new projects(Gravity Rush, Little Deviants) and already extremely popular series like Disgaea, Katamari, Uncharted. If you didn’t like these games, why buy PSV at all? If you didn’t like PSP or stationary PS console games, you’re not going to like what comes out on PSV.

wow… why does the PlayStation Vita seem a lot like politics is the U.S. both sides equally biased.

firstly, I’m a Sony fanboy, so I’m just as bad as anyone else here.

secondly, the Playstation vita isn’t really overpriced for the hardware. oh, it’s expensive but overpriced? it’s powerful, thus it costs more, LOGIC! is it worth more? that depends on…

thirdly, the games. the Playstation Vita has the holy dual sticks (this is assuming that the second-stick doesn’t gain traction, like the Wii-motion plus) it can afford analog twin stick shooters and action-adventure-y games. now you point out Zelda… Friggin’ ZELDA a game I can play on my n64 with better controls, at that. at the same time, Mario Kart has been released and re-released so many times, I know it has minor Improvements, but to someone who didn’t care in the first place that’s a mute point. I’ll concede that super mario 3d land is going to better than most(if not all) offerings on the vita but, one games a system does not make.

now, look at Vita’s franchises, there’s a lot of new, fresh and unbroken ground here, all of the best games on the 3DS are storied franchises, whilst arguably perfecting what they do to a fine art, they still aren’t new. if you never cared for Nintendo’s franchises before, the 3DS won’t sway you.

fourth, you only need the 4 gig memory card to play all the retail games(even saves on the ps3 don’t pass 10 meg) and also, the 32 gig memory card is only 100$, not 120$ (MRSP), you only need to go digital for select titles(a trend that is sure to die down due to lagging digital sales) you only really need a 8-16 gig (8/16 games at a gig/game, which is a trend) which is an extra 40-60$ yes it’s pricey, it is a lot but a far cry form 120$.

wait how is it being an inferior portable Xbox 360/Playstation 3 a bad thing? isn’t that sort of the point? I mean, you want a portable Playstation 3 with it’s own screen? something like that would (reasonably) cost WAY more. also, have you played it? how do you know that the experiences provided aren’t on par with Xbox/Playstaion games? if you just want to get quick, arcade experiences go get a smart phone, the games are cheaper anyway.

overall, the PlayStation Vita as a different beast and has a lot to offer, for a higher point(cost wise) of entry.

That would be more educational if he actually used an ad hominem. If anything, you just used one, saying that you are going to discount his entire argument due to something about his character.

It’s still a bit of a rip-off either way you slice it. A 32gb Class 10 SDHC card from a respectable brand like Kingston or Patriot runs around 32$ -40$ on average in a retail outlet. There’s almost no advantage or benefit to use a Sony Pro Duo over a high speed SD when comparing their purpose yet you pay 3x more for it.

    It’s a complete scam.

That’s why their camera line switched to be SD compatible – people wouldn’t buy their crappy cameras in the past mainly because the overpriced memory cards convinced most people to stay away. Even the few that were good cameras at the time were ignored – the few and far between back then anyways and yes, I’m talking about cameras not camcorders, big difference between video and pictures.

The only reason they won’t switch on this one is because there’s simply no other brands to compete with to give customers an alternative…It’s times like this I really hate Sony and the corporate greed.

This is coming from someone who’s used to playing DS games, so bear with me… but… doesn’t the PS Vita use card-based games? Couldn’t it technically be able to save the data onto the card itself instead of forcing you to get a memory card? If that’s the case, this further emphasizes the “scam” aspect of the Vita.

I know the Vita is much more technologically advanced than the 3DS, but as a point of comparison, the 3DS comes with a 2GB SD card, and I’ve read it can work with as big as a 32GB SDHC card. In terms of competition, it seems like the 3DS is at an advantage, being compatible with a much cheaper, more commonly used form of memory storage.

I’m not trying to be a fanboy or anything… I really am looking forward to this console, it’s just that mandatory costly memory cards (and not being the same ones as the PSP) is indeed a little off-putting. Maybe a future model will have on-board memory like the PSP-3000?

Looking at those sizes, getting the 4gb one would just be a waste of money. Why even make it that small?

That is actually smaller than I was expecting. However you would still need a decent sized memory card, you’re right. I hate sony memory cards though. They cost so much when they aren’t even THAT big. It is such a scam. -_-

I think I’ll just stick to my 3ds for now. There are no games that are a must have for me at launch anyway.

Sheesh, with the price on the memory cards and the sizes you’ll need for a decent number of games going by those numbers, I’m suddenly quite glad I have no plans to get a Vita. Needing to cough up an additional $60 just for a decent-size memory card is pretty crazy I’d say.

Wait a second, thought occurred to me on re-reading this: those numbers are for downloading the entire game, aren’t they? That’s not the space required to hold just a save file?

If so, that changes things entirely, since I wouldn’t ever do that when I could just buy a physical copy of the games and pick up a smaller, cheaper memory card that can still handle plenty of saves.

Yes, those are the sizes of the game if you were to download them digitally, not the save file. The save sizes are minuscule by comparison.

There’s a rumor going around that the digital version could be up to 40% cheaper than retail. We’ll have to wait and see on that though!

Oh man. This can become very disconcerting. Everything depends on just how much these cards are going to cost. Otherwise we could end up with a pspgo situation all over again.

Very swanky how they changed the size of the sd cards so we can’t use the normal psp ones. Did I say swanky I mean sort of annoying.

Still it won’t take long for other companies to make them. You’ll be able to get them from Hong Kong on eBay for less than 10 dollars (including shipping).

It’s only the console’s large price tag that bothers me. People are adverse to paying full console prices for handhelds. It’s the reason why the Game Boy kept beating out every other handheld. I don’t reasonably see this handheld ever getting down to the current DS price range–and that’s the sweet spot.

Well, that and the fact that they support SOPA. But so does Nintendo. Hence I will not be buying any consoles from either of them. At least Microsoft saw the error of their ways.
