This week we talk about the Spike TV Video Game Awards, who won what and what big gaming announcements were made, a Sony publisher doesn’t want an online pass in it’s upcoming game, Ninja Gaiden 3 gets a release window and an apparent miscommunication sends Nintendo stock holders into a frenzy.
Well the holiday season is upon us. What does that mean? Well, a lack of gaming news (that and Tom gets all the fun news of the week…jerk). So, to change things up for the next few weeks leading up to the holidays I’ll be writing up a few Top 10 lists.
This week it’s the Top 10 Games to Watch in 2012. Games you should be excited, games you forgot about or games you didn’t even know were coming. Let’s go over which games I think you should be watching for in the new year:
10) The Darkness II
The sequel to the very underappreciated the Darkness looks to hook everyone this time around.
Jackie’s back and is now the Don of the Franchetti family (I won’t get into too many plot details from the original in case you haven’t played it, and you really should go out and play it). Taking place two years after the original game Jackie’s been able to keep the darkness at bay during this time. An assassination attempt leaves him near death but it releases the Darkness in order to save him.
A mysterious stranger named Victor Valente appears who is aware of what the Darkness is and he wants the powers for himself. Jackie must fight off Valante and the mysterious “Brotherhood” in which he leads as he also tries to figure out what the motivations of the Darkness are and what it actually wants with him. But enough about the story, let’s talk the meat and potatoes of the game.
Gameplay has been tweaked to make for a much more entertaining time. Quad-wielding has been added which will allow the player to use two weapons as well as the darkness powers at once. Jackie can also use the environment to his advantage. For example, he can use the Darkness to rip-out car doors and use them as shields during intense fire fights.
Darklings, your little demon minions, make a return and will have more of a gameplay and story focus. They’ll be able to use the environment around them to aid you, such as construction drills and basic weapons like pistols to attack enemies.
There’s a lot more I can get into like level up your Darkness powers using leveling trees etc. but really, it sounds awesome to me already. The game drops on February 10th but do yourself a favor: pick up the original. It can easily be found for $10 or less at your local gaming store and you’ll understand why this game made this top 10 list. You won’t be disappointed.
9) Syndicate
Syndicate is a reboot of an early 90s Bullfrog Software real-time tactical game (one I never played, which is weird seeing as how I had a love for Bullfrog games in the 90s). Gone is the overhead third-person tactical game, it’s been changed to a first-person shooter and might I say does it ever look like a gorgeous one.
The story, what little is revealed of it, is very Deus Ex-like. It takes place in 2069, politics no longer govern the world. Instead it’s divided up into different regions controlled by corporations called syndicates (hence the title of the game).
These syndicates have control over technology and how consumers interact with the digital world. All people are implanted with neural chips, provided by their syndicate which takes care of their every need, from housing, investments and entertainment. What do the syndicates get in return you ask? Oh nothing really, just insight and control over individuals.
Since there is no government different syndicates fight over dominance. At the front line are agents. We’ll be playing as one named Miles Kilo. Agents are bio-engineered and chip augmented for combat situations (this is where the Deus Ex reference comes in). Using these abilities they can hack anything they’re wired to, including environments, weapons and in some cases enemies.
There will also be a four-player co-op mode in the game with a separate story which apparently based on missions from the original game. Who isn’t up for four-player co-op?
Now I’ve read a lot of backlash about this game due to it being so drastically different from the original. Now, I can’t speak about this because I’ve never played it but I can tell you as soon as I saw the trailer for Syndicate I was automatically hooked. It looked like a faster paced Deus Ex. Considering Deus Ex: Human Revolution is one of the best games I played this year Syndicate looks like it could be right up my ally. Oh, did I mention you can get a gun that shoots around corners? Don’t know what that means? Watch the trailer!
The game will be released February 21 on Xbox 360, PS3 and PC.
8) Transformers: Fall of Cybertron
If you know me, you know I love Transformers. A guilty pleasure from my childhood which I simply can’t let go. Come on, what guy doesn’t like giant robots which transform into awesome vehicles!
The Transformers franchise hasn’t been blessed with many good video games…. That is until High Moon’s War for Cybertron. A very straight-forward third-person shooter which resembles Gears of War, everything just seemed to work well in this game. From good shooting mechanics, simple and fluid transformations from vehicle to robot mode and vice-versa to giant boss battles and an very underappreciated multiplayer it simply was the best game ever made based on the Transformers.
Well a couple months ago High Moon announced a sequel called Fall of Cybertron. The game is to follow the last days of Cybertron before the Autobots and Decepticons travelled to Earth. Little else is known about the story or even gameplay tweaks but I can list a few reasons why I’m extremely excited about this game:
1) DINOBOTS!! That’s right; those giant mechanical dinosaurs will be in the game. Their leader, Grimlock was featured on the cover of November’s Game Informer magazine. 5-year-old me screamed with excitement!
2) If you played War for Cybertron you’ll remember the giant boss battles with Tripticon and Omega Supreme. While those boss fights were awesome if you were like me you wished you could actually play as one of those giant transformers. Well according to the Game Informer article Fall of Cybertron will include two new giants, Metroplex (I actually had this toy as a kid) and Bruticus. Also, according to High Moon both will be playable… You mean I can actually play as a transforming Autobot city crushing puny Decepticons? Take my money High Moon, I really don’t want it!
While this game may have the least amount of details released about it on this list it still gets a spot… just because I can still hear 5-year-old me screaming for Grimlock and to be able to play as Metroplex again after my parents gave away the giant toy of mine… and I’m not still bitter about that… not at all…
7) Metal Gear Solid: Rising
This game may have been a lot higher on this list if…well… there was more information released about it! It was briefly demoed at E3 2010 and instantly got my attention.
Remember all those awesome cyber-Raiden kicking-ass sections you got to watched in Metal Gear Solid 4? I doubt I’m the only person out there who was wishing he could actually PLAY those sections of Raiden slicing and dicing those mechs. Well in Rising, you will get to do just that.
The game is supposed to keep its stealth roots, but will be more fast-paced (seeing as you’re a cyber-ninja and not an old man, I would hope so). From what I understand the stealth will be very similar to the current Batman series of games. You hunt an enemy in the shadows and attack without anyone knowing you’re there.
While the game can’t all be stealth as half the fun of being a cyber-ninja is kicking ass! The key new gameplay feature which was shown was the sophisticated swordplay. You’ll have control over how you can cut enemies using a “free slicing mode”. This feature will be important when fighting certain robotic enemies as Raiden cuts them open it exposes a particular energy point which he absorbs to heal himself.
Also, this “free slicing” feature can be used not only to slice-and-dice enemies, but also the game’s environment. Say there’s a bunch of enemies in a covered area you can slice up the columns around the enemies and have the ceiling cave in on top of them.
No release date has been given for Rising as of when I wrote this beyond the 2012 release window. I know I shouldn’t include this game on this list because of this… but I can’t. That gameplay demo from 2010 is stuck in my mind.
6) Max Payne 3
Here’s another one we’ve been waiting for awhile and really, can Rockstar Games do any wrong?
Since the second game, Max has left New York City and now lives in Sao Paulo, Brazil and is working private security for a wealthy family. Not much else is known about the plot, but my guess is things go terribly wrong and Max must face his inner demons once more since the murder of his wife and child in the first game.
The famous bullet time mechanic returns, allowing the player to slow down time to dodge shots as well as shoot enemies. Honestly, would it be a Max Payne game without bullet time?
The game promises to have a more action/cinematic feel as well as a new multiplayer component. As more videos and previews get posted before the game’s March release the more I get excited. Once again I state, it’s a Rockstar game and I honestly can’t remember a bad game they’ve released in recent years… maybe Table Tennis but I never played it (for good reason, it’s table tennis).
5) Tomb Raider
Wow, I never thought this would ever happen: A Tomb Raider game cracking the top 5 of a most anticipated game list. I’m sure I’m not alone in this, but I haven’t been a fan of this series at all. Only reason I think it’s been around so long is the sex appeal of Lara Croft and that has faded away after one bad game too many.
All of a sudden here comes Square Enix taking over the Tomb Raider series and giving the development group, Crystal Dynamics the green light to shake up the franchise. What do they do? Something that should have been done years ago: Reboot the whole series and try to make it actually good!
The story will follow a young Lara Croft, right out of academy on an adventure to search for ancient relics. A storm strikes and the ship she’s aboard is torn apart. She’s marooned on an island and must overcome all kinds of physical and emotional trauma in order to survive.
Right away this description sets it apart from any Tomb Raider game available. A gritty game of survival starring Lara Croft? You’ve peaked my interest Crystal Dynamics.
Certain areas of the island will be restricted until Lara learns a specific ability while exploring and upgrading her abilities via a skill system. Wait… are they adding a mechanic from Metroid, one of my favorite game franchises to a Tomb Raider game? Ok, I’m more intrigued now.
Puzzles, one of the only features I liked in past Tomb Raider games are back. They are supposed to be more complex this time around and Lara will need to use elements such as fire, water, wind and friction to solve them. Also, a new feature called “survival instinct” can help Lara solve certain puzzles. It will highlight important items in a puzzle, but Lara must be standing still for this to happen.
Ok, so let’s go over this again: A gritty, survival-based Tomb Raider game with some Metroid features and more complex puzzles? Yep, you deserve the 5 slot Lara.
4) DmC (Devil May Cry)
Devil May Cry: My favorite series from the last console generation. If you read my article from last week you know my love runs deep for this series.
Even though Devil May Cry 4 was released this console generation and while it was a good game you could tell Capcom was running out of ideas for the series. In 4 you had to replay all bosses a second time over in reverse order and it just felt like extra padding after the think tank ran dry.
Capcom wanted to go in a totally different direction with the series. Enter developer Ninja Theory, the group behind Heavenly Sword and Enslaved. Capcom wanted a drastic change in look for the series, including bad-ass protagonist Dante. The reimagining of the character saw major backlash from fans.
Like I said last week, I held back judgment of this reboot. I wanted to hold back any opinion until I actually saw gameplay which really is the hook of the series. Well videos have been trickling out over the web the last few weeks and it’s looking like I was right for reserving judgment. Combat looks exactly like a Devil May Cry game should: Stylish combo-based hack, slash and gunplay that I love with a rocking soundtrack to get me pumped to slice up demons.
The environments, while looking gorgeous, also seem to be one of the main enemies of the game. In a gameplay video we see Dante trying to escape an environment which is falling apart all around him. So not only will you have to fight your way through a hoard of demons you’ll have to fight the environment itself.
I know I’m going to get some flack for putting this game so high, but it won’t change my mind. DmC is looking very promising and I can’t quiet the fanboy within me to me. I’m always up for more Dante, no matter how different he looks.
8) Diablo III
We’re into the home stretch people! Why not cap off the top three with one of the most anticipated games of the last decade!
The Diablo series is one beloved by PC games everywhere. Pretty much bringing the dungeon-crawling-loot-grabbing game to the limelight it’s just such an addicting series. Clicking your mouse a thousand times to bring down a hoard of enemies and snatch loot from their remains may sound all that fun, but dear god is it ever. Over this past summer I picked up the original Diablo at a flea market for $5 and it’s STILL as incredible as I remember it 15 years ago. Not many games still have that lasting appeal this day and age.
Blizzard Entertainment, a group well known for taking their time developing games and not releasing them until they’re completely ready (another feature which seems to be lost this day and age) has been working on this game for awhile. Looks like patience is finally going to pay off as Diable III’s slated to drop sometime in early 2012 (once again, Blizzard won’t release it until it’s 100% ready).
Let’s get to some gameplay features. Small things like gold can picked up by simply having your character touch it instead of manually clicking it is a nice time-saving addition. Instead of health potions enemies will drop health orbs which can be used to heal the player. This has been added to speed up gameplay.
Allies will be present in the game. You have the choice of bringing a templar, a scoundrel or an enchantress with you on your adventure. You can only bring one ally with you at a time and the feature will only be available in a normal, single player game.
Co-op returns, which was a primary hook to Diable II. Sessions will be a simple drop-in, drop-out system making it easy for friends to join you on your quest.
New to the game is an auction house. Here you can either use in game gold, or if you’re a rich tycoon with cash to burn use real money to buy virtual items for your character. Also, you can trade items with other players using the Auction House feature making it easier to get a hold of that rare weapon, armor etc. you’ve been searching for, as long as you have something trade in return.
I can go on, but I would be gushing with too much excitement. I’ve been waiting over a decade for this game and I highly doubt it’ll disappoint!
2) Bioshock Infinite
I loved the original Bioshock. It just sucked me in with its crazy story, plot twists I never saw coming and the crazy idea of moral choice: Do you save an infected little girl or do you do harness the power inside her at the cost of her life? Also, we were introduced to one of the most iconic enemies of this console generation: The Big Daddies.
We’ve had a sequel since then, but it wasn’t handled by the original developer, Irrational Games. While Bioshock 2 was good in my opinion, it lacked something. It didn’t have the hook which drew you into the original. It felt more like an expansion pack than a true sequel.
Late last year Irrational dropped a teaser trailer for their tight-lipped upcoming game. It was to be titled Bioshock Infinite. Gone is the underwater city of Rapture we’ve come to know for two games. Gone are the Big Daddies and Little Sisters from the original game. We’re in for something completely new.
We were introduced to a city in the sky called Columbia. I was awe-struck by how gorgeous the floating city looks, a stark contrast to the desolate city of Rapture after all the conflict. But as gorgeous as the city looks, it’s just as deadly.
Columbia is actually a giant battleship and apparently had a big part in the Boxer Rebellion of the late 1800s. Due to this the city was disavowed by the United States and disappears into the sky. But the looming threat of Columbia always at the back of people’s minds.
The game takes place in 1912. You play as a man named Booker DeWitt, a former Pinkerton agent. His character is drastically different than Jack from the original Bioshock who was silent. Booker actually speaks and interacts with characters throughout the game.
Booker is hired by a mysterious group who know the location of Columbia. They ask him to infiltrate the city, find and rescue a young woman named Elizabeth who apparently has some form of amazing powers.
Finding Elizabeth is easy enough for Booker, but he soon finds out she’s the center of the civil war raging in Columbia as each faction fights to control her powers. Booker and Elizabeth are forced to trust one another in order to escape the floating city. But the war is the least of their worries…
In order to make sure Elizabeth never escapes captivity, she has a guardian. A giant, mechanical bird-like creature named Songbird which is continuously hunting them. This looming creature will always be at the back of your mind while you play the game. When will it be coming? How can you stop it? Can you stop it? Songbird might be the major hook to this game as it is the boogieman stalking you every step of the way.
Gameplay wise, things are somewhat similar to the last two Bioshock games. You have an assortment of weapons which as pistols, shotguns, rifles etc. and you’ll also get a hold of powers similar to the plasmids in the other games of the series. However, unlike the other games when you decide to pick a power you’re stuck with it the whole game, giving you a limited amount of powers to obtain. This is to give the player the idea of consequence for their choices.
Also, in an inertesting gameplay addition Columbia has a roller-coaster like skyline, which Booker can hook into for fast travelling, chasing/attacking enemies. It seems like a very interesting a fun addition.
Ok, enough gushing. Every video, every article I read about this game I get more excited… and it’s still a year away from release! The wait for this one might kill me.
1) Mass Effect 3
Oh man… Oh man… I cannot wait for this game. While I came to the Mass Effect party late I initially hated the series. I had a really rough time getting into the first game. I put it away on my shelf for a long time not even bothering with it.
Then the hype for Mass Effect 2 started popping up. All the great review scores, talks about it being Game of the Year when it was released in January 2010, I needed to finally see what all the hype was about.
I put the first game back in and it eventually hooked me. Story was fantastic, but I found the inventory system way too complicated, I got lost a lot trying to figure out where to go on side missions in a massive world, but I enjoyed what I played. I picked up Mass Effect 2… and that all changed.
A game where all the moral choices, my character’s background, all the characters which lived/died affected the story in the second game? My mind was blown! I felt an attachment to my choices as they carried weight. I played Mass Effect 2 for a few months and not once did I ever feel bored. I couldn’t wait to see how this trilogy ended.
Enter Mass Effect 3. I’ve been steering away from plot/gameplay details as I want to be surprised. I want to the end to my Commander Sheppard’s story to be a surprise. That’s really the key to this series; it’s your character’s story over three games. Your choices, the people who live and die throughout your series affect each game’s story. Each person’s playthrough of this trilogy could be completely different (to a point that is). That’s why it’s so beloved.
If you haven’t played the Mass Effect games yet, do yourself a favor: Go to your local game store and pick them up. They can easily be found for under $20 and they’re worth every penny. Play through them before 3 drops on March 6th and start to mold your story to save the galaxy from the Reapers. What are the Reapers you ask? Play the game and find out!
Well that’s it folks. I know I missed some other games such as Halo 4 and Borderlands 2, which have very little information released, Twisted Metal and Soul Calibur V (yes it’s spelt that way) which just finished outside the top 10 or Street Fighter X Tekken which isn’t my cup of tea. But let us know what your top 10 most anticipated games are in the comments below!

@ Bleak_Moonlight
Sorry if it seems like I write walls of text. I have a essay-writing/journalism background and it’s hard to break the habit while writing over the internet. Even in this crazy broken English internet age I try to keep this structure. Oh and I don’t go to 4chan. I just don’t need that headache.
Hate to say but Mega Man is dead. While I did enjoy Mega Man 9, and Mega Man 10 was… ok (I beat it in 2 hours and haven’t touched it since) it will never be the same with Iwata. Even if Capcom does release another Mega Man game it simply won’t be the same. It’s over. Sad as I have a deep love for the Blue Bomber as well.
Yes I do pay for my own games. I do have another full-time job and I do this on the side as I love writing and I love gaming. I would love to be doing this full time but I’m just breaking into the industry writing these articles/news scripts so maybe one day I will be a part of the “cool” clan with publishers sending me free titles to write and review.
Us lesser-known game journalists/reviewers usually have to pay for our own games, which can make things difficult in reviewing and writing. I’m actually having a rough time writing up my top ten games of 2011 as I haven’t had the time or money or to play every AAA title that was released this fall. I’ve missed out on Skyrim, Assassin’s Creed and Uncharted, three games I REALLY want to play but considering I work another 40 hour job on top of this gig and somehow have to toss in a personal life into the mix (as well as gaming time so I have stuff to write about) those titles will be omitted from my list which will most likely get me some flack.
I’ll just say this, if DmC ends up being a pile of shit I will be the first person to admit I was wrong. I’m not afraid to do so and have admitted to being wrong in the past in such cases.
Last year I was convinced Dead Space 2 would be garbage adding in multiplayer and Visceral saying they wanted to add more action made me think the atmosphere and horror I loved from the first would be gone. While I was right about the multiplayer being a rubbish mode I loved the game. I was perfectly fine with admitting I was completely wrong on that call. I will do the same with DmC if I end up hating it.
Like I said in an earlier post, I’m perfectly fine with people disagreeing with anything I write and gladly encourage an open debate on the subject. If you disagree with what I write at least it means you read it and if you comment on it then I guess I did my job somewhat alright. I’m a big boy, I can take criticism. If you can’t take it in this medium then you really shouldn’t be in journalism/media frankly. Without criticism, people can’t improve, which seems to be a forgotten point this day and age. As long as everyone’s civilized and respectful I will gladly do the same back. The moment stupid/childish/uncalled for insults start flying around then I’ll simply won’t reply. Life too short for getting into pointless internet flame wars.
Once again, thank you for reading my stuff and keeping things civilized in this debate. I hope you continue to read our stuff and I encourage you to comment on anything you agree/disagree with and I will gladly respond to you in a respectful manner.
Just to let you know,Capcom is supporting SOPA,the same bill that may end up leaving you without a job. Looks like they want even more hate mail.
Yeah I don’t blame you,but when you anger 4chan to this degree, then you know that you messed up big time.
Didn’t people say the same thing with Sonic for God knows how many years? Granted it took Sega a billion years to finally develop not one but two excellent games in the name of Sonic Colors and Generations but the point is they never gave up and took the easy road. From transforming a werehog to kissing a human,Sonic has been put through the ringer like no other mascot.
Mega Man is dead because Capcom refused to take chances, learn from their experiences, and think outside of the box aka evolution.
Capcom really thinks that they can go on without Mega Man?! Yeah right. Their other franchises are not selling like before and are nowhere near their former glory days. (Resident Evil and Street Fighter)
DmC will be like Strider Returns on the Genesis I guarantee that. I shit you not. Why? Did you know that Capcom wasn’t responsible for its creation? US Gold was. Who? Exactly.
I am absolutely sick to death of the gaming media placing all of the blame on the fans and trolling US by saying “it’s the hair” and other bullcrap statements. Especially with the edgy titles and whatnot.
Kotaku is especially guilty is of this. If a journalist doesn’t understand why the fans are so god damn mad then do the damn research and find out. It’s your job even if you don’t give a rat’s ass about the game. I do this even for say Final Fantasy to understand why they are so angry about XIII.
Thank your for being patient with me,Mr Black and trying to see things from my point of view. You have earned my respect and admiration since you responded to me in a respectful courteous fashion when I disagreed with you.
There needs to be more gaming journalists with your viewpoint.
In my case,I hope I am not wrong with Rising being a game worthy of the Metal Gear name.
.
Definitely looking forward to BioShock Infinite and I was pleasantly surprised seeing the new MS sneak preview and the VGAs. Raiden seems to have gotten a much needed upgrade from the one I’m familiar with in Sons of Liberty. I’m a bit surprised Diablo 3 was ranked at Number 3 while Mass Effect 3 was Number 1 in most anticipated games. While the Mass Effect series is great no doubt, I think it’s much more fitting that the game people have been waiting years for be placed at the top. Honestly, you know if StarCraft 2 had gotten delayed by another few years, that one would be the number one anticipated game, so why not give the top spot to the much more deserving Blizzard title?
The top 3 on this list was extremely hard to place and all finished really, really close to one another. Mass Effect just edged out Diablo and Bioshock just because it’s such a personal epic story that I want to see how the fight ends more than anything. It’s a rare thing where you as the gamer can craft such major story points which can affect an entire game trilogy. Don’t get me wrong I will be getting Diablo III and it will be awesome. I’m actually in the middle of replaying the original and will be moving onto Diablo II shortly after in preparation for III but I am slightly more excited to see how Mass Effect 3 finishes everything off.
Thanks for the comment!
Christ dude can you for the love of Sparda shut the hell up about your blind infatuation towards the Devil May Cry reboot. It’s getting rather annoying at this point and honestly Ninja Gaiden 3 is shaping up to be a better hack and slash game. Fuck even Metal Gear Rising: Revengance (which is the new name of the spinoff of the game. Nice journalism there. ) will be a much better experience since Platinum Games has proven they can do what Ninja Theory can’t do:make great games.
Unlike you,I am not a blind Devil May Cry fan who is buying into Ca&hcom’s bullshit. The fact that you don’t care about Ca$hcom’s disrespect towards the fans and accepting that punk ass kid as Dante means that you opinion is worth less than nothing. At least you admit that you are a fanboy. Ca$hcom has no shortage of them.
“Even though Devil May Cry 4 was released this console generation and while it was a good game you could tell Capcom was running out of ideas for the series. In 4 you had to replay all bosses a second time over in reverse order and it just felt like extra padding after the think tank ran dry.”
Ca$hcom got lazy and you’re trying to make excuses for them. You seem to have forgotten that DMC3 also required you to fight all of the bosses again. Also the first one had you fought bosses more than once.
I honestly am questioning what exactly do you contribute here since you clearly did not do the research.
Ah, I was expecting something like this for including DmC. So let’s go over this shall we:
First of all, I am hardly a Capcom fanboy. Far from it actually. While I did grow up in the company’s heyday in the 80s and 90s I have been way less than impressed with what they’ve been dishing out lately. Mostly because it’s the exact same games over and over (Street Fighter for example). Does this mean we can’t get excited for a game from Capcom? No.
Also, for your point about other Devil May Cry games requiring you to refight bosses multiple times, none of it was quite as bad as DMC4. Let’s use the original Devil May Cry as an example. You have to fight Nelo Angelo several times as you progress through the game. The reason for this is it’s a major plot point leading up to a huge reveal the final time you fight him (I won’t get into details as some people may not have played the game yet). Devil May Cry 4 once you get to the game’s halfway point you switch from Nero to Dante and you replay pretty much the same levels from the first half of the game in reverse order fighting the same bosses as well. I’m not making excuses for Capcom, it was very lazy game design.
Your point about Ninja Theory never making a good game is strictly opinion, which you have every right to have by the way, but many would disagree with it (Enslaved is a very underrated game in my opinion). Same thing can be said about your love for Platinum Games. Others hate their games for just being way too over the top. I personally like the work both studios have done and I think both their upcoming games look very, very promising.
The fact remains, and I’m not the only one to think this, DmC actually looks quite good. Like I said, I am a huge fan of the Devil May Cry series and I do admit I’m not particularly fond of Dante’s new look but that really doesn’t matter much in the grand scheme. If the gameplay is amazing, which so far it looks top notch, then I could care less about the character redesign.
Also, for your point on Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance, my deadline to write this piece was Friday, a day before the VGA reveal. As of last Friday the game as still only known as Metal Gear Solid: Rising. Problem when trying to keep weekly deadlines is just this, something major you’re writing about gets revealed the following day. The game still looks incredible though. Any game that Platinum releases always has A+ gameplay but the stories are always meh. With Kojima’s team behind the story of Rising that gives me a lot of hope this could be an incredible experience.
Thanks for commenting!
At the very least we are in agreement that Capcom these days sucks and are releasing the same crap over and over again. I too have grown up gaming during the 90s and early 00s. It’s a damn shame to see what was once a great company fall so far and become so terrible. While people are more pissed off at Activison because of Call Of Duty I on the other hand am sent into a rage whenever I hear anything from Capcom.
While there is no problem with getting excited for a game from them, nothing they have in development right now interest me in the tiniest bit. Plus I am on a personal boycott of anything related to them since they have done nothing but piss off their fans. Most of all,I am especially steaming mad with the way Megaman has been treated.
That makes no sense. How does DMC3 get off the hook for essentially doing the same thing you are blaming DMC4 for. What I mean is your complaint about fighting the same bosses again is moot since it has been there since the beginning. Yes the first Devil May Cry handled it a lot better I can totally agree with. DMC4 in a way kindof had a reason since Nero didn’t kill any of them and they all ran away from him. What’s the excuse for DMC3.
Really?! Ninja Theory never making a good game is strictly opinion?! You having bad taste in games aside,I hate to tell you this but it is a FACT not an opinion that they haven’t made a good game. Heavenly Sword is a shitty God Of War knockoff with a chick that is only brought up because when it came out for the PS3,there was no quality games for it.
As For Enslaved, even when it was praised for its storyline NOT for its gameplay which is even worse somehow,it bastardized the source material Journey To The West so much I have trouble believing they even read the same Chinese literature other people have. Also it cost the jobs of 90 people at Namco for publishing it. To top it all off,Tamneen blamed the lack of sales to the DMC fans.
Finally go look up Kung Fu Chaos. I won’t spoil it for you.
Difference is Platinum Games is more respected in the gaming community than NT and has a better tack record. This cannot be argued.
The entire character has been changed, not just his looks. His origin story, his family, his world, the basic iconic features of the character design. It’s a different character in every single conceivable way other than “He kills demons with a sword and swears sometimes.” They may as well have called him Kratos, it would be the exact same situation.
This would be like if Mario walked into his next game wearing a polo-shirt and some sweet cutoffs with orange hair and no mustache, but was still calling himself Mario. Ya know, no,that’d actually be better cause at least THAT Mario would still stand out. New “dante” looks like every other action guy in every other game.
Finally even just from a gameplay aspect it fails since it is no longer fast based stylish action. Seriously go watch some combo vidoes of DMC3 and DMC4 and you’ll see why NT can’t come close to matching it.
Ok, let me expand further comparing DMC3 replaying bosses to DMC4. DMC3 you had a way longer list of bosses and the only times you had to refight any were either a) Virgil, who was a major character and plot device and each time you fought him it was different. b) Jester, who was an added continuous boss fight for the Special Edition. I found he was just an annoying extra as he wasn’t hard at all to beat, just very annoying. c) Having to refight all bosses towards the end of the game as a sort of solute to Mega Man. DMC4 didn’t have nearly the number of boss fights as DMC3 and also, as I said earlier they reused the same level settings for the bosses in reverse order when you switch from Nero to Dante. It just felt, to me anyways (and I’m not alone in this), that the development group was running out of ideas and recycled a lot more compared DMC1 and DMC3. If they had the same Mega Manish leadup to the final boss and had more boss encounters I don’t think it would have been such a problem, but it feels like you’re replaying the same levels and bosses for the second half of the game. I want to make it clear again though, I like DMC4 but it is the weakest of the three games (I don’t count DMC2 and I really don’t need to explain why).
I do think saying Ninja Theory’s games are bad is an opinion, because… well it is and a number of people would disagree with you, not only myself. Mind you Platinum’s titles have done better units shipped and review wise (not by a lot lot though) both have their flaws with their titles (Platinum having very deep and awesome gameplay but nonsensical stories where as Ninja Theory always delivers a great story but not so deep gameplay). I can argue with you that Enslaved’s gameplay was enjoyable but that would be my opinion as well (much as your comment about me having terrible taste in games). Not everyone would agree. Also, I think part of the reason why the game’s sales were terrible was due to the time it was released around the holidays and the same day as Castlevania: Lords of Shadow. I remember a year ago I wanted to pick up both but only had the time/funds for one so I went with Castlevania (I don’t get free games for doing this gig. I have to pay for all the games I play… which is a lot btw). If Enslaved were released in January or February and not around another major title I think it may have sold better. Also, I think Heavenly Sword was a good game even though it was a copy of God of War with a chick (you could technically say the same thing about Bayonetta being a copy of Devil May Cry with a chick done by the original creator of DMC). My one major gripe with the game was the stupid forced Six-Axis controlled sections which were terrible. But it was a launch(ish) title for the PS3 and most had the stupid Six-Axis forced upon them. Thanks for that Sony.
As for gameplay of DmC does look comparable to other titles in the series. Combat still looks like fluid mix of sword, gunplay and aerial combos. As more gameplay comes out we’ll get a better idea of what Ninja Theory plans on taking the combat but they have invited any DMC vets to the studio to try out the new game at their UK studio and see they plan to keep the gameplay and difficulty the same as the previous titles.
As for his character, very little about Dante’s character has been revealed so I honestly can’t comment on how different he is personality/background wise. As soon as more information starts trickling out over the coming months I will comment on this. I do think the idea that the city Dante is in being an enemy trying to kill him is a neat idea though. Just thinking of being attacked by demons while the world around Dante is trying to kill him gives me all sorts of hope gameplay wise.
I would just like to say though this is all just opinion on my part and I could be completely wrong. DmC could be a pile of trash but from what I’ve seen so far I think it looks very promising. We’ll just have to wait and see.
Also, I would like to thank you for (mostly) keeping this back and forth talk in good taste. I’m perfectly fine with people disagreeing with my list/opinions/thoughts and bringing up valid points against my argument. I actually encourage it and will gladly listen and defend my reasoning for what I write. As long as people keep things in good taste and try not to make personal comments or resort to name calling (which happens a lot on the internet) and everyone respects each other I gladly encourage an open debate on my articles/lists and I’ll gladly respond to you in the same respectful manner.
I also would like to agree with you that pretty much nothing Capcom has coming in the next year interests me at all. DmC is the one I am most looking forward to and Dragon’s Dogma sounds interesting, but considering I’m currently playing through the Witcher on PC and plan on playing the Witcher 2 soon after (may wait for the Xbox release though) and I haven’t played Skyrim (and when I do all bets are off) I think those RPGs will more than fill up my time and I’ll won’t try Dragon’s Dogma until well into 2012. The rest of their games all sound meh.
It would help if you properly space out your sentences and paragraphs better that way it doesn’t look like a giant wall of text. If I was just like any other obnoxious lazy idiot who uses terrible 4chan lingo I would have said fuck it too long didn’t read learn to use spaces you ____. But I am not. I am above such utter nonsense.
Ironically that is all Megaman is getting these days: meaningless tributes. But yes I am well aware of why Capcom decided to do that. I just hate it when people bash on DMC4 for that when DMC3 and DMC1 did that already. It’s a pet peeve of mine in any case to fight all of the bosses AGAIN right before the last one. Alas this is a small price to pay when it comes to being a gamer.
Well I can’t argue that DMC4 did not disappoint me in some way as you have stated respectfully for the reasons you have brought up.
I guess that is where we are in disagreement since while you may not like DMC2,I on the other hand do even with its glaring faults. Reason is simple:without it, Dante would not be in Shin Megami Tensei Nocturne and Altus making him awesome. And without him being in Nocturne,I would not become a fan of the SMT series. Persona doesn’t do it for me. I need to control the devils and angels.
Here’s the thing though. Who cares if the game has a great story but awful gameplay. Video games are meant to be PLAYED not read or watched like movies or books. Platinum Games gets it. Ninja Theory doesn’t. Also I do care about how a company treats the consumers hence me loathing NT.
The same can be said if a game has fine gameplay but an awful story. I look for equal balance on both aspects. Of course there are exceptions I am willing to make but for the most part I need both among other things. Most gamers are not going to pick up a game with a great story but no or lacking gameplay.
Silent Hill 4 The Room is a perfect example of a game having a wonderful story but terrible gameplay.
I could rail on Castlevania Lord Of Shadows all day but not now.
I honestly did not know that you do not receive free games for reviewing purposes. IGN and other big name gaming sites do for the most part hence I assume the same thing here. With that said I guess I can take BT’s opinions more seriously since they have to buy it on their own, meaning they have the same perspective as a normal everyday gamer. That is what these big huge companies lack.
Since Bayonetta was done by the same person who made Devil May Cry that doesn’t count. Terrible example. Plus they are equal in terms of quality. God Of War > Heavenly Sword in a landslide.
Umm no gameplay in DmC is not even close to matching the previous entries in the series. I can easily rail on you all day for being so naive in thinking that by going to explicit detail why,but I’ll say just this. Go read the DmC forums at Gamefaqs and you’ll see how dead wrong you are good sir. You said so yourself. You played both HS and Enslaved. Neither game allows the same freedom with combos as with Bayonetta and Devil May Cry. And yet here you are sitting here trying to tell me otherwise. /v/ on 4chan will just eat your alive.
God Of War has the same problems. It’s shallow button mashing.
As for them inviting the pros to try it out,it’s a rumor and I don’t trust rumors. If they do rip this game a new asshole will you then listen to good reason.
Where have you been? It’s been revealed he is now a half devil half angel hybrid. So much for continuity.
If you present yourself in a respectful fashion and don’t overreact when called out on your bull then I will respect you and debate peacefully.
Finally read this and you’ll learn everything you need to know.

This part in particular explains why the gameplay portion of DmC sucks

I believe that we are done here. I have nothing further to add and shall leave you alone in peace. It was nice debating with you.
Your link about the fans reaction to the new DMC was a great read.
But I have to disagree with the whole thing on premise alone. The worst thing, THE ABSOLUTE WORST THING you can do is listen to your fans. DMC fans are no better, they’ll see the franchise sunk with the same cocky character that has run his gambit. Dante wasn’t even a good character until DMC 3 because that’s the game that decided not to take him seriously at all. And it worked.
I like the idea of this reboot, I know it must madden you to think that somehow someone can have a different opinion than you, or wait, I’m sorry you consider your opinions facts don’t you?

You’re forgetting that if you don’t listen to the fans, you know the very same people that your business is suppose to market to,and proceed to insult, bash and belittle them well you won’t exactly receive any from of sympathy. The last thing ANY company should do is piss off the internet which is what Capcom has been doing with stupid decision after stupid decision.
That in turn leads to a lot of angry customers who won’t touch your product and well poor sales.
Don’t believe me? Ultimate Marvel vs Capcom 3 sold less than 30,000 from the getgo. Seriously Capcom had to rely on a Smurfs game on Facebook to stay alive and if they keep this up they will be gone.
I’m not saying that Capcom should bend over backwards, but they haven’t been listening to the feedback and negative criticism they have been getting.
What kind of horseshit are you trying to feed here that Dante wasn’t a good character until the third game. I’m sorry but as much as I love the game, personality wise,he’s my least favorite in the series.
“they’ll see the franchise sunk with the same cocky character that has run his gambit”
That is quite the demented moronic opinion you have. His various appearances in other games and having his own anime said otherwise. Not to mention I still remember the backlash over this of September of 2010 as if it was yesterday. The hate for this has not still died out.
Duke Nukem is the one who is no longer cool.
I’m more maddened by your complete and utter ignorance. You are blindly supporting a reboot that did not need to happen in the first place to sound edgy and badass. Except that you come off as some brat who is selfishly depriving the fans from a real game in the series. If Capcom had just made this into its own IP,I would have absolutely no problem with anyone liking this.
If you backed up your opinion with reasonable examples then maybe I might take you seriously which I have on the other hand. Mr Black proved to be a better debater than you sonny.
Yet again, no ratings. Oh well, I guess you guys don’t need our opinions of your content because of just how awesome it is.
