Nope! No bugs here, only rupees…

It is rare, in my experience at least, to see a bug in a Nintendo game, especially one that is game-breaking. Well, I guess we now say that it has happened, as some fans unfortunate enough to find a game-ending bug in The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword can attest to.

Now I already beat Skyward Sword, and let me tell you its a damn good game. (No doubt deserving of the review score we gave it.) However, a game-ending glitch has been found during the “Song of the Hero” questline, which only occurs if you do events in the quest in a certain order. Thankfully, Nintendo has already released a statement about the issue, which you can read below.

Nintendo Statement

We have been made aware of the issue that results in being unable to progress in the Song of the Hero quest. If the game has been saved after completing the sequence of events, it will no longer be possible to proceed through the game on that save file. The only options at that point are to either start the game over or to use an earlier save file to continue.

The situation is caused by performing the following sequence of events during the Song of the Hero quest:

1. At the beginning of the quest, go to Lanayru Desert to retrieve the song of the Thunder Dragon.

2. In the Lanayru Mine, speak with Golo the Goron.

3. Complete the Thunder Dragon’s event, and receive his song.

4. Before heading to the forest or volcano regions, speak with Golo in the mine again.

5. At this point, the forest and volcano events will no longer occur, making it impossible to continue.

Solutions:

• This issue WILL NOT OCCUR if the Fire and Water Dragon songs have already been collected before collecting the Thunder Dragon’s song. Talking to Golo in the Lanayru Caves will also NOT trigger this issue.

• If the game has been saved after completing the sequence of events, it will no longer be possible to proceed through the game on that save file. The only options at that point are to either start the game over or to use an earlier save file to continue.

I wish I had a better answer, but I’m afraid there currently is no other fix available. I can assure, however, that we are documenting all feedback we receive on this issue. Thank you for your patience and support.

Sincerely,

Sharon Matheny

There is no word if Nintendo can even perform an update or a patch to the game to fix this little bug, but right now old-fashioned word of mouth is the best method to keep people informed about the situation. It is good to see Nintendo also responding to the feedback rather quickly, and quick to point out the problem and how to avoid it. So at the very least, anyone reading this article will be informed.

The game ending bug in a Zelda game has actually happened before, it’s just that people encountered it far less:

Legend of Zelda ~ Link’s Awakening (Gameboy)

Don’t wait too long to get Marin’s ocarina song – by the time you get the 6th (maybe it was the 8th and final) instrument, she essentially disappears and is nowhere to be found, so you can’t get the song – in which case, you can’t crack open the Wind Fish’s egg for the final boss battle, even if you have the 8 instruments.

Most people didn’t encounter this, because the game directed you to get her song after the second dungeon.

It might not be that Nintendo cares, it might be because Nintendo isint heavy up updates. Im not Trying to bash the company here but it is trying to release games with no DLC, and it has worked for the most part. Problem is it happened to Metroid, and now to Zelda. Not saying that DLC fixes everything since even Fallout 3 DLC has major glitches that need to be fixed still. It just be nice if they could add a few things for later.

I hope they’re able to fix this in all future copies of the game disc they produce. I will avoid this in my own copy, but it’s a shame to see an error like this mar an otherwise truly excellent game.

Indeed, with the track record Nintendo holds I think this is an encounter both few and far between and far from unforgivable. The fact that it requires a very specific sequence of events to even happen means a large majority of people would have never or never did encounter the issue to begin with. For the rest of the people, now you have a fair and timely warning and solution as well and I while I don’t doubt people will try to string up Nintendo for this atrocious grievance against their persons, yeah…no.

Their response time is excellent and if one bug managed to slip through the cracks of the extensive testing Nintendo tends to do than that’s just life. People aren’t omnipotent and far from perfect. This bug is so absurdly easy to bypass given the circumstances required to even enact it that I can’t even get upset over it.

However, with the recent advent of Skyrim and its…issues. I don’t doubt a great many will stir up a very much unwarranted and unjustified hornets nest over this. It’s sad how simple minded so many people have become.

Rare to see a game breaking bug in a Nintendo game. I’m glad they quickly responded to the issue, and in the end it’s really not that bad. Both me and my brother played through the game and neither of us had this issue.

Huh, I’m surprised anyone stumbled onto this bug at all. I’d have imagined that the natural tendency of players upon starting that quest would be to go to the Water Dragon in Faron province first, since that’s the one whose location you already know at that point. That’s certainly what I did.

Oh well, good to know for future play-throughs.

Eh, things slip through the cracks. Even Nintendo can afford a few un-winnable bugs every once in a while, though if they do it with the next Zelda, then I might have to question their beta testers a bit more…

First Skyrim and now Zelda, truly the world is coming to its end. The sheer volume of men driven to madness and suicide by the bugs in Skyrim should have us all fearing for our lives, but the body-count this will bring will be in the hundreds of billions, or at least that’s what forum posters lead me to believe. Repent and be saved, before it is too late.

It’s good to see a company respond quickly and with detailed info. After dealing with Bethesda for almost a month about Skyrim on PS3 it gives me faith that some companies still care, unlike Bethesda. Good job Nintendo.

Yeah but that’s kind of an unfair comparison because Skyrim isn’t as linear, meaning Skyward Sword is telling Link’s story while Skyrim is telling the story of whoever the player makes – as a dragon born.

I’m not saying one game is better then the other just I think Skyward Sword has fewer programming variables and thus fewer chances to have bugs.

You know, some games with long histories sometimes get a special treatment in small ways, like a book highlighting its successes or a re-release of the original title commemorating the anniversary. You got to hand it to Nintendo though; when they want to give you something, they go all out!

I’m a little disappointed to see a BT review following the trend set by every other reviewer. Granted, I don’t expect a font of wisdom dripping from each and every word, but I find myself genuinely let-down by the level of generic here.

Every other reviewer and their dog has pitched in about how good SS is, but the ones that do invariably use the same tired language.

“expressing himself in a way not seen since Wind Waker”
“deeper characters than previous Zelda games”
“works far better than the previous system”

Comparing a game to its previous iteration is a given, but comparing it SOLELY to that is not. It’s clear that you hold this game to the standards of Zelda games only, and not to games as a whole.

For instance, I’m guessing, since they were your listed cons, that the hit and miss graphics and motion plus implementation are the main reason this game got a 9/10. I can infer, then, that you thought that the story deserved full marks.

How deep are these characters, as shown in this game, compared to other games? How interesting is this narrative, compared to other games? How meaningful are your choices, compared to other games?

The answer? Not very. Groose, a character you wink at in this review, is a paper cut-out in comparison, who spends literally half of the game crying a corner, and the other half developing off-screen. Groose is not a well-handled character, except in the context of Zelda games, which have traditionally had weakly-developed characters.

Skyward Sword is fun, for a bit. But it is sorely lacking in more areas than one, and definitely doesn’t deserve the label of “an utter triumph in entertainment.” Quality is subjective, and you’re free to your opinion, but the criteria on which you base your opinion, how it measures up to Other Zelda games, leaves this review pretty useless.
