Star Wars: The Old Republic

Players: Massive Multiplayer Online
Publisher: BioWare/Lucasarts
Genres: RPG, Other
Release Date: December 20, 2011
Developer: BioWare Austin/Lucasarts
MSRP: $TBA
Platforms:
Set 300 years after the events in Knights of the Old Republic (and featuring some familiar faces), Star Wars: The Old Republic will put players on either side of a massive war between the Republic and the Empire. In Star Wars: The Old Republic, players will explore an age thousands of years before the rise of Darth Vader when war between the Old Republic and the Sith Empire divides the galaxy. Players can choose to play as Jedi, Sith, or a variety of other classic Star Wars roles, defining their personal story and determining their path down the light or dark side of the Force. Along the way, players will befriend courageous companions who will fight at their side or possibly betray them, based on the players` actions. Players can also choose to team up with friends to battle enemies and overcome incredible challenges.

Go Force Lightning, you're burning up the quarter mile! Force Lightning! Goooooo Force Lightning!

Ladies, Gentlemen, Hutts of all ages. Welcome to the Q&A, where I took your questions and answered them to the best of my ability with very little chance of spoilers. With The Old Republic getting its Beta Test on with a high amount of beta keys for all, I thought I would respond to some questions that some of you might have about the new Star Wars MMO, and encourage you to question me more about the game. Maybe I’ll make ANOTHER one! But without further ado, on with the questions!

Is it the best game ever? Note: If you answer anything but yes I will call you a WoW fanboy and ignore anything you say.

It isn’t the best game ever, as I reserve that title for Hello Kitty Adventures Online. The Old Republic is pretty damn close though.

Are we going to torture and destroy all of the Spoony Ones forces (including himself) or are we just gonna beat them into submission?

Even though all know that a warrior of the Empire can take at least two Republics barehanded and blindfolded with a thermal detonator strapped to their chest, the rate of enlistment in the Spoony Expendables is staggering. We must recruit more to the cause, or we will have a zerg army on our hands, and being on a server where the enemy Horde outnumbered the Alliance 2:1, that is something no one should experience.

The Imperial/Republic Fleet will be your HUB city for flashpoints and much more.

What would be your primary reasons to play this game over any other MMO?

The primary reason would be the story. As much of an obvious answer that this is, the individual stories as a whole for the Sith Warrior, the Imperial Agent, and the Sith Inquisitor were very diverse from each other and focus on core beliefs or roles of that class. For example, if you want to be a Sith who feeds upon his or her own rage through the force and crush all those beneath your lightsaber, you would want to try out the Warrior, while those who want to unlock the deepest darkest secrets of the force to rule over all should try out the Inquisitor.

However, there are some binding ties to some of the stories between classes. Take Sith for example: While secretive slaying of rivals is one of the more popular methods of role advancement from within the ranks of the Sith, so is betrayal. There are multiple instances of betrayal done by temporary characters during planet specific missions as well as the possibility of an influential character in your story becoming Judas during your rise to the top.

Another reason would be how much content is actually in already. I will not lie to you; to get a character to maximum level will probably take you the better part of about two to three weeks of solid playtime. While having alts of the same faction will only change the personal storyline and companion quests, alts of a different faction will drastically change the types of quests you will receive, even on neutral occupied planets like Nar Shaddaa and Voxx.

Never send a Padawan to do a Master's job.

Without spoilers of the story, does the focus on a heroic style of play apply to the Sith plots as strongly as the Republic?

No. Like I stated beforehand, the Sith storyline stays true to its goals in the aspects of rising to power and to crush the enemies of the Empire. If there’s any consolation, you can play like an honourable Sith, but you would have to pay close attention to the dialogue options, and at most times these choices revolve around Light Side options.

For someone who has largely had no real interest in playing MMO games so far, is this a game they should or shouldn’t think about (either as a Star Wars fan or not)? For Star Wars fans, is this something that they should/would/could enjoy? Would it be something that makes you want to fall in love with the series once/even more?

While there are thousands of free to play and Korean MMO’s are structured like The Old Republic in terms of progression and gameplay, I would honestly question if you have played Knights of the Old Republic  or KOTOR II. There are a lot of playbacks in The Old Republic to events that happened in these games, so my suggestion is that you get on Steam and go get KOTOR for less than lunch at Subway. If you enjoyed it at all, then The Old Republic will be an interesting game to experience, as you will see what has happened since the rise of Revan the Conqueror, and how unstable the peace is with the Republic and the Empire up until the breaking point that your character will be a part of.

As this is the case, The Old Republic happens a lot earlier in the timeline. While the Star Wars feature films had an amalgamation of diverse characters that drove the movies forward, The Old Republic has that but the character progression is separate per base class. If you really wanted to experience them all to get a great experience from the game, be ready to devote a lot of your time.

I'm betting Angry Joe will use this ability 24/7.

Do you find any of the companions interesting? How many companions does each class have and do they share any? Do they have any impact on the overall story?

Each player character will have a total of six companions, five being unique battle companions and one to be the droid that maintains your starship and can be used for crew skills. I can only attest to my experiences with the Sith Warrior as I have completed that character’s story in saying that the company you keep plays a role in your progression and sometimes you may never see it coming.

As for my favorite so far, I have to give major props to everyone’s favorite Dashade, Khem Val. He eats force users for breakfast (Seriously. With waffles and a dab of Aunt Jemimah.) and he is very involved in the Sith Inquisitor’s storyline for the entire stretch of the story.

Do the base and advanced class compete well for potency for PvE and PvP play?

To be honest, the last time I played with friends to test differences between DPS, there were some MAJOR discrepancies between the amounts of damage output per class. As there aren’t any testing dummies or any sort of Recount mod to track dps/healing output, a friend (Sith Marauder) and I (Sith Sorceror) decided to check how quickly and efficient we could destroy a certain elite target by ourselves with no companion. Fighting elites on your own is incredibly hard, and it took me a lot of lightning, healing, and a medkit to prevail over my foe. However, my marauder friend took down the elite in barely little time, and had to use a medkit because a wandering mob group came in at the home stretch, which I pulled off of him.

While I know that is only one example of two advanced classes, it seems to be the consensus of the beta testers that I talked to in both general chat and in groups for flashpoints that there is still a lot of balancing issues needing to be resolved before the game goes live with the MMO role trinity (DPS, Tank, Healer). Even though each class has its own resource bar and method to play, there are some definite problems that need to be ironed out.

Seriously Malgus, when does anyone NOT have what we want?

In your short time with the game, how significant were the decisions you made in your story and how much of an impact you felt they will make down the line?

[***SITH WARRIOR SPOILERS TO FOLLOW***]

There are some significant choices one can make in one’s lifetime, and that is true also for your character in ToR. While some cases will impact the story severely among people you will never see, there are some choices you make that can influence the company you keep. For example, during the first act of the Sith Warrior campaign which has you as the hunting hound to a powerful Darth, you are tasked to execute a target that would severely cripple the Jedi that hound the Dark Lord’s plans. However, when the player is about to administer the killing blow, you also have the option to persuade the target to join your cause, eternally angering your master.

And that will do it for the ToR Q&A #1. If you would like any more questions answered for another session, leave it in the comments below, or you can ask me on Twitter!

As a pink magenta lightsaber crystal is available to both factions, the Hello Kitty is strong in this game.

Can you elaborate on your observations of the skill trees for ACs and the spread of variable play styles they support?

Thanks for answering my question, i had guessed it would be like that in a bioware game but i had heard people complain that the decisons didn’t mean anything so i wanted to be sure. Looking forward to friday when i can finally get my hands on it, although it’ll be hard to pull myself away from skyrim.

James get ready for massive hate from GW2 and WoW fans. Angry Joe’s article is also filled insecure fan boy comments. They can’t accept the fact this game is good. lol. Good article man hope to see you in game.

Joe’s article is filled with insecure fan boys of the old republic. Every comment I saw with people saying anything but “THIS IS TEH BEST GAEM EVAR!!!” was downvoted absurdly. I saw a comment where he just said he didn’t like the art style (which Joe also said he wasn’t too into in his top 10 anticipated games of 2011) and he got downvoted to hell. I’m more excited for GW2 than this since I still like GW and GW2 looks good to me whereas my last experience from Bioware was Dragon Age 2 which I think everyone on the internet has already said everything that needs to be said. Then comes in that I feel like this SWTOR was just made to milk that fanbase more. Then since its set 300 years in the future it means that basically none of your choices in KOTOR mean anything unless you happened to choose exactly what the designers chose to keep which is what happened in DA2. Then I heard the plot details in the ME3 leak and now I know for sure I am not buying that game. I’m unsure if I want SWTOR to succeed since if it doesn’t then Lucas Arts could potentially be shut down since its not deemed profitable anymore but if it does then its going to be good for EA who I don’t like. I can’t say anything about this game since I haven’t been able to try it so I can only work off what Bioware has made recently and shown for SWTOR and I do not think it’s for me.

The guy you mention being down voted didn’t just mention he didn’t like the art style, he said he didn’t like it because it reminded him of the clone wars cartoon, which is a reason i’ve heard before and still think is ludicrous. Not to mention he also complained about the animations, which look fine enough to me, didn’t knowtice them at all during joe’s playthrough.

I’m sick of hearing that Dragon age 2 was a bad game, cause it REALLY wasn’t, it was a good game at the very least. The biggest problem with it were the fact that it reused zones far too often. It was still a fun game to play through and well worth playing if you liked the first dragon age. Also i don’t see the problem with them choosing the canon ending to KOTOR, they did that about 5 years ago. You were never promised that your choices would carry over into the next games in the series. Besides, what would you have them do in an mmo? Look on your pc for a knights of the old republic 1 and 2 save to load in your choices?

Bioware have already commented on the mass effect 3 plot leaks, they’ve said that most of the stuff in them is 6 months old and has been changed or modified so you really don’t know what is going to happen.

You should want SWTOR to succeced because your a gamer, you should want every game to be awesome and play well. Not to mention that having competion for wow can only help the mmo market, since it’ll force blizzard to make wow better to keep up with this and guild wars 2 (which will hopefully be awesome aswell). Not to mention give other developers hope of making a nice living in a competivite market. Wanting a game to fail just sounds very petty and childish to me.

I’ve seen the animations for SWTOR and they are horrid. I’ve seen dozens of things when blows don’t even connect and that famous one when a character gets injected with something and it doesn’t even hit them that had to be redone several times since they kept messing it up.

Also Dragon Age 2 is a bad game. It had a bad story, bad writing, bad quests, and mediocre combat. The dialog choices were usually pointless since many of them all said the exact same thing, the retcons were everywhere from the darkspawn, to flemmeth’s design, to leilana and anders being there regardless of whether you killed them in Origins or Awakening. Also I found this out guess why your characters can’t equip armor in DA2.

I’m aware that Bioware said the plot points in the leaked beta were old but it’s that they were implemented in the first place that seriously concerns me. I’m not saying them now since I have no idea if they are being kept in the game and I’m fairly a decent amount of people reading this will want to get Mass Effect 3 so if you don’t believe me in how bad they are I can link you to a post on the Something Awful forums where people were saying them.

It’s because not enough people cosplayed as Dragon Age characters. Also the term “gamer” has no need to exist anymore and WoW has enough big name competition coming out in the comings months with more than just SWTOR but SWTOR is the only one of those charging a subscription fee.

Well i’ve got plenty of videos were the animations look just fine, the video joe posted today showed plenty of combat and the animations were perfectly fine there. Once again i get told about the famous “injection scene”. A scene that was not ment for the public to veiw as it was behind an NDA and was obviously just a placeholder until they got the animations put into the game. You know, like the stuff a developer does during a beta, but no no, you found a single instance where it didn’t look good so obviously we can throw away the 30 mintue video of the game playing fine in favour of a single video that is about 8 months old and will never make it into the final game.

Once again, Dragon Age 2 is not a bad game, it really isn’t. The story is fine, the writing is top quality, like i really don’t see were you are coming from in that.

            http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D7I91SmkIcQ

Theres a nice example of the humour to be found in the game (there plenty of it, with merril and her “spacey” ways being a highlight).

            http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NjrKeGVF-xw

And there is some very well done drama (for a game anyway), so yeah, don’t know where you got the bad writing from.

no good quests? Well there was the murder mystery quest, that was a good one with an impactful ending, There was Merills main quest which dramtically changed the way i thought about the dalish (in that they were dicks), Varric quest dealing with his brother was well realised and ties nicely back into the main story. thats just three examples, could name more but at the very least you have to say it was a mixed bag. I mean there are always going to be bad quests in a game, i never finshed the fighters guild from oblivion for example, but there was plenty of others that were great (theives guild and dark botherhood to give examples). Point is, i don’t think the quest were as bad you make out.

Combat i can see the objectiveness in it, like i quite enjoyed it and was fun to play, but it was a departure from the first games so if you didn’t like it fair enough. Still though, games are getting shat on constantly for not changing (modern warfare springs to mind) but a developer can’t really win if they do change the combat and people complain they liked what they had before. If i had to guess why you can’t equip armour onto your compaion characters i would guess it was due to time restraints placed on the game and it wasn’t worth them creating 5 unqiue models for ever set of armour and made more sense for you to unlock the armour for your companions due to this.

I’m not going to read the supposed spoilers to mass effect 3 since it’s a game thats story is a big part of the game so no thanks on the offer. One thing though, you admit that you knew they had said it was going to be changed, but your still against it because “it’s that they were implemented in the first place that seriously concerns me”. Are you really going to hold that against the final game? Like is Clerks suddenly not a good movie because Kevin Smith originally planned for dante to get shot at the end and changed it after consulting friends who told him it was a bad ending?

I have no idea what your talking about with the Dragon age cosplayers comment, so…fair enough. Okay, your a person who has an interest in video games:P And it’s good that wow is getting more competistion, but as i said, why would we want a game to fail? Like i don’t get the logic, surley the market being more competivite can only be a good thing than only a few games being viable and the rest being left in the dust.

So…a question for you two. I like TOR AND GW2 (having been in beta in one and having played the other at Gamescom) and I’m confident that both games will be great fun to play and will have a healthy amount of sales, what does that make me?
