BioWare continues to salvage servers from The Old Republic… but now they’re offering rewards for helping server communities?
A rapidly declining subscribership and a huge development staff can still sate EA’s hunger from ToR’s earnings, right? Right??
MMO Grinder Sidequest is a quick look at MMOs I wouldn’t normally review, be it through limited trial accounts, or Closed Beta games. First up, it’s the oft requested Star Wars The Old Republic.

At the Star Wars Guild Summit there was a video shown to the attendees that detailed the upcoming 1.2 Mega-Patch. Finally, after much waiting, comes the actual clear and HD version of that video…

The Disciples of Hatred and it’s Roleplayers Contingent take on some PvP in the Star Wars: The Old Republic Beta
What’s in the SWTOR VIP Lounge??
Are you ready for some hot click-spamming PvP madness?!
Announcing the first gathering of the Disciples of Hatred during the Beta Weekend Stress Test! …and of course that silly Jedi Consular progression video too.
Your questions FINALLY answered! What are the best aspects of the game? Why this MMO than any other? Do we get to kill Jar Jar? All this and more in ToR Q&A #1!

Much like the Jedi, you were deceived. I was in the beta test all along! MUHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!
Music Mondays revisits the band that brought us tunes from Scott Pilgrim vs. the World and Bit.Trip Runner.
I know that I am late to the party on this one but I wanted to say that, yes, this game does have a lot in common with WoW, but I do believe that Bioware has stated many times that their focus in this game was story and to me, that really makes me feel more invested in the character I am playing. Yes, the dialogue does take up a lot of time… A LOT OF TIME. But I enjoyed the dialogue, I enjoyed the choices my character made, and I enjoyed the subtle changes made to the story through those choices from a similar story that my friend was playing at the same time. But this isn’t my review.
I really just wanted to say that for the first video (I skipped the second to keep the Talon story a bit of an unknown to me) you forgot a few things, I know it’s a beta. As a Warrior both your class buff (Party Damage Increase) and the Shi-Cho stance (+3% to damage and armor I believe.) would have probably made that giant beast a bit easier to deal with. They were at the end of your bar near the fast travel and the self heal. =)
As for a new guild name, I was thinking along the lines of The Rage Ascendants. Wish I could join up but I have… Prior obligations.
My only problem with the Beta is that my computer sucks and can barely run it
The next name should be “Advocates of Anger.”
It resembles Disciples of Hatred enough that it’s obviously similar. Advocate and Disciple. Anger for Angry Joe.
Just got weekend access for this weekend!
Are the servers regional? When I log in from Europe, will I be able to play with you Joe? That would be cool.
Cool, I’ll have to look into it, and also, what about this as the idea.
Not another ‘hatred’ group. but another chapter of Disciples.
Angry Joe’s Disciples of ‘CHAOS’.
only 500 in a guild…. lame
Name of second guild: Disiples of hatred 2: The sithening
Why did the developers choose to step back from the progress of MMO customization by providing us with limited tools to work with in this new MMO? I’ve seen Aion brought the best in customization for the MMO and I’d hate to see their effort in designing would be considered as a curiosity.
The Sith Inquisitor? You just attack his weak point for massive damage. Just be careful because nobody expects the Sith Lord Inquisitor!
Speaking as someone who’s beta’d a decent amount of MMOs it’s unlikely you’ll keep that kind of accelerated level progression, but one can hope.
Closed Betas usually greatly increase the game’s experience gain, while lowering the enemy power and difficulty, just so you can experience more of the content easier… and come across more potential bugs and needed fixes.
I am intrigued by this game, but man have I been scorned before by fever of the latest game to come out.
I understand there are quite a number of people who have been burned by other MMO’s. If anything, it seems MMO players may be the most jaded of the whole gaming community, and that’s saying something.
Personally, I’ve played the Beta and am very pleased with what I’ve seen. While I sincerely doubt any game will actually kill WoW, TOR has the best chance to steal it’s throne, at least eventually.
name for new guild… hmm… Lord Joe’s shadow hand… =p
or Disciples of Hatred: Anger Division…
whatever the name… we shall serv you my most angry lord… say the word and we will lay wast to the galaxy… may your enemies burn and turn to ash… and may you reap the dark glory… =p
(“until i have the power to overthrow you…. muhahahaha…. wait… what are you doing? don’t read this part!!!!”) XD
“Fear is the path to the dark side. Fear leads to anger. Anger leads to hate. Hate leads to suffering.”
We have “Disciples of Hatred”, so obviously the Extra Guilds we make should be things along the lines of “Disciples of Anger” or “Disciples of Suffering”. We could also use synonyms like Pain, Loathing, Terror, etc.
You chose one of the stupidest quotes from the Star Wars prequels as the basis for an idea in a video game that is already even in Beta far better than any of the prequels. See the problem?
A lets play through the first 10 levels of WoW would be 95% killing wolves/boars and 5% grabbing quests you don’t read telling you to go kill said wolves/boars.
The fact that you have a dialogue before a boss fight and let him know that he will die makes this game so much more bad ass then anything that WoW has to offer right now.
Has nobody looked at the reactions of the Seconded Opinion? UNLIMITED POWA!
In all seriousness, this game looks Amazing and although I’ll be on Joe’s side if and when I get this game, congratulations to both Joe and Spoony for having The Largest Guilds. This just comes to show, don’t fuck with Blistered Thumbs in Star Wars.
This is kinda disapointing MMO. Star Wars brand is not enough to get people buy games if there is much better games in same genre. Sadly this one can’t beat WoW that will still remain as king of MMOs.
We, the Spoony Expendables, will destroy you filthy Sith like the vermin you are! Fearless, righteous, and ever ready to throw ourselves into the teeth of certain death. Without hesitation, without regret! Waves and waves of us, choking our enemy to death with stench of our corpses!!
Seriously though, this looks like so much fun! Can’t wait to get my hands on a copy.
You aren’t going to win this. I swear it.
Great play through joe, but to do the game justice, you rally have to show the stuff that comes after the Black Talon. Everything before that is basically just the game tutorial. In WoW, hunters didn’t even have their pets till now. The Inquisitor story gets really good once you reach Dromund Kaas.
In fact all the stories start picking up and intertwining in interesting ways past level 10. Combat too, your advanced class in SWTOR is like your actual class in WoW.
you mean Hunters don’t get control of their pet.
I got really annoyed at Yahoo/Bioware on this one. I got an invite to this Beta and was so up for it but the final email with the code to be redeemed by friday night arrived in my mail on friday evening, just hours before. I am literally seething right now!! Argh!
Remind me to never get captured by Joe.
Lol your legacy of evil is spreading far and wide joe.
It doesn’t look nearly as good as i thought it would be, but hopefully it plays better than it looks.
give it a break its in beta
if I was still playing WoW I would comment on Joe’s backpaddlin’, standing in the fire and clickin skillz but thankfully I care not for such things anymore
I was lookin forward to this game then I was cautiously optimistic and now thx to you Joe Im hyped up again, the dialogues are great as they always are in Bioware games, and even though I am a Jedi now and forever I did like your dialogue choices. Thanks alot for showing us the footage, I know we can always count on you for an honest oppinion, also would be nice if youd share your oppinion on some of the non jedi classes, how bout the trooper next?
My ideas:
Disciples of Hatred Strike Back
or
Return of the Disciples of Hatred
My suggestion for the auxiliary guild’s name would be something similar, like Disciples of Malice. In fact, I’m willing to set up the second guild if you have not done so already.
I am a little torn about this game. looks like it could be some fun but i also have this feeling like it has wasted potential.
maybe i will just wait a thousand years for KOTOR-3
Hey Joe, got some questions for you. I saw you were playing on the Malgus server; is that the server your going to try and stay with when the full game comes out or will you try other servers?
Also are you willing to give PvP a try?
The multiplayer conversations look preety cool. I was wondering how that would work. Wondering how this will work as an entryway MMO though, because ive never played one before, but I love Star Wars!
As with every MMO you get a free month with your purchase of the game so well, you get thirty days to figure out if this game is your thing or not.
Grats on the guild filling up Joe, sorry I won’t be joining you, or Spoony. I was also beta testing on the Jedi side as a Consular. I loved every second of it, I truely felt like a jedi. This game will be amazing.
Awesome. Another excellent incredibly satisfying and fun display of this games single-player rpg and corpg core, no doubt.
Purely from all the Bioware video reveals, interviews, panel discussions, and Angry Joe’s reveals. . .based on those reveals compared to what the gaming market has seen in the massively-multiplayer field over the last several years, TOR is clearly a heavy themepark CORPG game with an emphasis on story during single-player, party-based and cooperative online play; the story rpg aspect, obviously being something that Bioware is known for.
But why am I paying $15/month for a single-player rpg with absolutely no massively-multiplayer tenets, other than being able to host 100’s of players in the same chat-box?
That’s the part i can’t quite understand, if really the story is the only thing youll care about this game(which for me is extremly mediocre compared to 90% of the RPG market, but i won’t go there), then you are pretty much saying you are ok paying 15 dollars each month for a single player game.
That’s quite a dangerous thoght, but i guess Bobby Kotick will be glad to hear that.
Yeah, this game has no multiplayer aspects to it at all, except the flashpoints, the operations, grouping up to do quests, random world pvp, trade hubs, battlegrounds and an open world pvp zone but no no, this game has no multiplayer compents at all.
I don’t understand why so many people are acting like the story is going to make this game. What time I spent in the beta weekend I felt I was wasting about a third of my time on the cut-scenes and their load time, sure they are a nice addition to help some people get through the grind of leveling but I just felt they extended my leveling experience much more then they helped it. With most of what an MMO really is about end game and it repetition I can’t see all that story being much more then a pain in the ass when you are farming that one Heroic Flashpoint for that one implant to help you get in your Operations. I will say I did love the mechanics of play involved with the game and this is one MMO I will play at some point once some needed, but not required, addition are added that were put on the back burner to get the game out sooner. In closing I will state that I mostly enjoyed the small time I had with the game something I don’t do with most betas, but it did show me this is one game I can wait to get.
It looks… Okay. I love the story aspect and that seems like it would keep me going, and gameplay doesn’t look horrible, just the same old same old. It’s WoW, but with KotOR. I wish companies would try new and innovative things with MMOs, but then again, from the standpoint of how much money they dumped into the game, EA would rather play it safe and do something tried and true instead of anything new. I know storyline is new for MMOs (sort of, there’s others that do that too), so that’s at least something. I guess we’ll have to see where they take it. Needless to say, the rabid fanbase will keep the game going for a while.
Two things.
1) WoW itself borrowed a lot of things from Everquest and other MMOs of the time, they didn’t exactly invent the MMO wheel.
2) If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it. Although I can’t really see the comparisons, twice I’ve trialed WoW and twice I got bored before my two free weeks were up (not to say that WoW is a bad game, just that it’s not my thing). I’m absolutely loving TOR and have had more than one session where I started the game and next I checked the clock it was 5am. So if it took whatever good parts there are to WoW, good for them. Everything else is definitely a solid improvement.
I will never play this. The art style is the same as the Clone Wars show which irritates me. Also the character animation looks really stiff. Gameplay is way too WoW style and I hate WoW style MMO’s.
Funny How U Can Completely Overlook The Other Features The Game Has Just By It’s Looks, Shame… Such A Good Game “Don’t Judge A Book By It’s Cover”
1) The art style is Comic Book based. the characters may feel cartoonish but the environments and co. are far from funny… You may not like it but being a graphic whore, especially for a MMO, is being dumb.
2) the Gameplay is NOT like WoW : Much fluid, much faster and much more reactive… it may share a similar base but it’s in the details that SWTOR defeat WoW…
3) well the animations are fine here… IDK what happened…
I never said the graphics were bad, they are very nice graphics. What I meant was if I’m meant to play a game for months or more I need to like the art style, which I don’t in this case.
no just no SWTOR is a hotkey mmo and looking at the spells they have a normal 1-1.5 sek GCD witch is the same as WoW so you can not say it is faster and reactive sens it is based on the excat same system (and the options within the system is quite limited)
and the animations are stiff the walking is not natural it is like a 2 sek loop while WoW has a 5 sek loop witch is pritty much a minimum for it to look belivebal
Is there an option to play the game in single-player?
I’m not sure if your serious or not so I’ll just answer your question like your being serious. It is an MMO so their is no single player. I’m sure that they will have some solo content but MMO’s are meant to be played with groups of people.
You Are Right My Friend Indeed MMO Are Meant To Be Played In Group With People And To Get The Whole Experience You Will Need to do So, But The Developers Has Stated That The Main Story Can Be Done in Single Player If You So Desire Even Do It Will Be Harder And Not As Fun As Grouping With Other People ^.^
I gotta add a second comment after finishing the full video. We both pretty much agree. “It is WoW with BioWare building on top of it.” But where you said it made it better I thought it made it worse. I didn’t think the hotkey setup worked well with lightsaber combat. I didn’t like the missions they gave you where it amounted to mostly running around for ten minutes just to collect one quest item with little significance or kill 4 acolytes.
If BioWare decided to just go with what they made in Old republic and adapt to an MMO rather than copy WoW. The game would have been so much better.
Well if having a ton of story in your MMO isn’t to your liking (since you seemingly largely ignored its presence), there are plenty of other alternatives out there.
Sorry, I didn’t word that correctly. I’m saying the BioWare stuff was GOLD. It’s what I loved about the game. What I’m saying I dislike was the WoW elements in their quest design. I don’t have particular fun just running ten minutes to pick up one quest item then running back. Yes, the dialogue and story made it better, but it was still run and pick up quest item then come back. Some of those trials could have been done much better if BioWare didn’t copy WoW quest design.
I don’t know about you people but when I played the beta as a jedi knight I used the point to point transports and called in shuttle transports to move around faster.
Angry Joe. MMO Rule #1
Do
Not
Stand
In
The
Fire!
Or maybe they will go the WoW way. “Oh you are standing in the fire? We will just move it then for you so you don’t have to do anything. And we will reduce the damage too just to be safe.” ><
More accurate would be:
Never sten in an area where area effect/field spawns above, beneath or anywhere between, especialy in boss fights.
my only thougt about the first vid what is wrong with that walking animation looks oddly stiff to me
i very much like the story driven mmo approach. even the party dialogues seem to be quite intense, when everyone is able to make important decisions like wether to attack or not.
nice vid, joe!
After KOTOR 2 i gave up on the series in total… wheres the Skyrim review Joe? ^^
