Angry Joe present his Puppet Theater starring Lil’ Joe in his review of The Gunstringer! Does this day of the dead marionette game have life or does it fall flat on its face?

The Gunstringer is setup as a live puppet cowboy show in which you are the puppeteer. You’ll laugh, you’ll cry, you’ll wish you had a controller to throw, but will you enjoy it?
The Gunstringer isn’t out until tomorrow, but Twisted Pixel is already prepared to share with us the first bit of DLC they’ll be releasing for the game.
Microsoft and Twisted Pixels’s upcoming Western The Gunstringer is going to be getting some special treatment. Today Microsoft announced both the price and date of the marionette-styled shooter, along with some pretty sweet extras to go along with it.
The studio who brought us the XBLA titles ‘Splosion Man, The Maw, and Comic Jumper is hard at work on The Gunstringer, a “hardcore” title for the Kinect.

If there is one thing that this console generation deserves credit for, it’s introducing us to developers that would never have had a chance without formats like XBL and PSN. Twisted Pixel happen to be one of my top two developers in this regard (ThatGameCompany being the other), so when I discovered that they would be producing a fully fledged title for Xbox 360, my heart skipped a beat. The Kinect may not be my favorite peripheral of all time, but it is certainly starting to gather a stronger line-up and a little Twisted Pixel is just what the tech-doctor ordered.
| PROS | Laugh out loud humor, wonderful presentation, loads and loads of unlockables, good price |
| CONS | Flippant controls, can’t hold your attention, precision movement sections were unnecessary |
| WTF?! | Samurai Cowboys. 50% shooting, 50% stabbing, 100% fabulous |
The Gunstringer is setup as a live puppet cowboy show in which you are the puppeteer. On a quest for revenge, you control the undead Gunstringer using your arms to move and shoot. Your old gang put you in the ground and now you’re out to get even. You’ll have to shoot, brawl, dodge and ride your way to these dastardly villains through several chapters. Each chapter is divided into stages, with the final being a showdown between you and your current target.
The controls are simple. With your left hand you move the Gunstringer around, much like you would with a puppet, pulling up on the strings to jump. Guiding your right hand around the screen locks on to up to 6 targets, pulling your arm back as if you were suffering recoil lets those bullets fly. It’s an intuitive system which feels like second nature after a small amount of time. Regularly the game switches it up a bit, either changing the dimensions of movement (e.g. changing from left/right moves to a side scrolling style) or by putting a second gun in your left hand instead, automatically firing and letting you raise hell upon your foes.
For the most part this control scheme works, but it’s not without its flaws. Sometimes the game will detect slight movement from your shooting hand and open fire before you’re ready (it’s never happened to me before), which can be a pain when you need to hit an explosive at the right time to avoid damage. Also, knowing how much movement is a small movement can be tricky as the game seems to pick and choose on a whim, creating rather frustrating sequences of gameplay. It’s made all the more poignant by sections of the game that ask for precision platforming, which is taxing to say the least.
Thankfully, The Gunstringer never punishes you enough in these tricky sections to make you want to quit. In fact, I never died. Health pickups are scattered through the game in reasonable locations and considering they recharge all your life, you should be able to battle through. The only issue is the score you will receive at the end of the level. There is something curiously aggravating about getting a silver medal for mistakes that you can honestly say were not of your doing.
As with all Twisted Pixel games though, it’s the setting and humor that make their games so wonderfully entertaining and The Gunstringer is no exception. References to Duck Hunt, jokes about cross-breeding and more Western nods than you can tilt a hat at. All of this is beautifully presented in a rather unique way. The Gunstringer is a stage show and the game will often show the crowd’s reaction to cutscenes as well as your actions. At the end of every chapter you’re even given a standing ovation, as roses scatter around the stage. Topping of this bizarre production is the narrator, who is the only person with any lines in the entire game. Somehow, this presenter manages to convey to you all the personality traits of every other character in the game perfectly while keeping in line with all Western film traditions. Prepare for lots of sentences that end with comparisons.
The whole thing is a parody and The Gunstringer manages to pull it off with style. They manage to keep the jokes coming, the weird flowing and the film references flying all the way through the game. Once again, it’s a delight to see the world that Twisted Pixel have created.
The Gunstringer holds many a reason to come back too. Aside from earning medals based upon your performance, there are additional medals earned through other modes and unlockable modifiers which range from changing the gameplay to the character models. I warn you now that hardcore mode might as well come with an attachment for the Kinect, so it can spit on you after it is done kicking your ass, it’s that hard. In the bonus shop you will also find videos, music and a picture gallery, with the later so full of content that it borders on the ridiculous. It’s good all this stuff is in there too, as the game is not particularly long, clocking in at just over 2 hours if you take your time re-trying a couple of levels for higher scores. Some may scoff at the small completion mark, but gameplay modifiers and medals really do act as incentives to and play the game again and again.
I’m just here to say that I love how someone else remembers Lucky and Wild. As for the game… I don’t own a Kinect, but if I did I would probably wait until it was lowered in price before buying it. I do want to try a puppeteering game.
Scoff.you don’t wanna play a puppettering game you must be insane.

Ohhhhhh…this game looks like so much fun. Shame it is a Kinect game, i can’t get it.
Still at least their next game is sticking with the 360.
AAaaaaaaaah These guys’ games make me want to buy an xbox!
Would be nice if they ported some, this could work nicely on the wii (sitting-down play included!).
This honestly sounds like a game better suited to the Wii… in fact, there’s a game with a similar control scheme for the Wii that has less control issue (though it’s a lot more serious than this one) and that’s Sin and Punishment: Star Successor (a hidden gem on the Wii Library, for the record).
Sounds like a fun game, but those Kinect limitations do sound like an annoyance.
I want that Angry Joe crochet doll! WHERE CAN I BUY ONE?!
This should have been an XBLA title. I would have most certainly bought it.But since it is a Kinect only game, i guess i can not. Its a shame. Looks as creative and funny as past Twisted Pixel games. Oh yeah I love the puppets Joe. One of them remeind me of Sackboy.
Was that PowerGlove I heard in there Joe
?
puppet joe
Joe, stop playing with yourself.
wow , this looks like a fun game , too bad I only own a PS3.
and I liked Hand Puppet Joe , he should be a new permanent character alongside Corporate Commander. ^^
Man this is the first time i wish i have a Kinect and an XBOX360. I love this kind of humor, especially in videogames.:)
Holy hell…..Powerglove….you listen to Powerglove Joe!!!!!That’s just so awesome.
Hand Puppet Joe’s hat looks like Woody’s hat from Toy Story…anyways, this looks like a fun game, might pick it up for my little bros.
Twisted Pixel’s brand of humor is always the seller. Now I just gotta get a Kinect.
BTW, AngryJoe needs to mass produce AngryJoe sack dolls and puppets!
Twisted Pixels is so good what developer lets you shoot them point blank?
That game’s hilarious! From the stuff you showed alone. Too bad i dont have a 360
Twisted Pixels sense of humour is really starting to impress me; and their CG and FMV work is outstanding for an ‘indie’ company.
Now all they have to do is stop snobbing the PS3. This looks like it would have made a superb Move title, if a little pricey.
PS AJ I really appreciated the bottle blowing sound in your intro. Nice gag.
I loved Comic Jumper and I have to say this game looks good enough to actually give the Kinect a try. Too bad I’m low on cash
Um… yes, I’d like to place an order for 20 puppet Joes. …Yes, I’ll pay for overnight shipping
Very interesting game and that ending clip was priceless. Even with the drawbacks of the Kinect, it’s good to see a company who cares about making games.
I actually didn’t know Troma had anything to do with this game.
Its classiness just jumped up a full 5 points in my book just for that.
Lloyd Kaufman ?!
That game looks extremely silly and fun. I would say if the kintect is a no go i’d probably just watch a lets play. Why miss out on the hilarity?
A shame i wont get to try this game. I only have a PS3 and a PC
I love these kind of creative games, and the western setting makes it even better. Oh, and you gotta love the artstyle, it’s very charming. And it reminds me of some older games i used to play.. Two in particular; Psychonauts and a 3rd person shooter i sadly can’t remember the name of.
Pity it’s restricted to Kinect. This PS3 gamer would love to try it out.
Joe, you could have mentioned you can actually download The Gunstringer Soundtrack for free from the Twisted Pixels web site.
http://thegunstringer.com/ and then click Downloads and Soundtrack
Looks like a good game. I like the way they’re spoofing old FMV titles.
Hey thanks. I love soundtrack music, and this’ll fit my collection perfectly.
these puppets are ADORABLE !
