L.A. Noire is an interactive detective story set in the classic noir period of the late 1940’s. L.A. Noire blends action, detection and complex storytelling and draws players into an open-ended challenge to solve a series of gruesome murders. Set in a perfectly recreated Los Angeles before freeways, with a post-war backdrop of corruption, drugs and jazz, L.A. Noire will truly blend cinema and gaming.

He’s dead, Jim.

In a time when it’s hard for new I.P’s to be very successful, Rockstar Games took a huge gamble and a deep investment, in publishing L.A. Noire, the freshmen effort for Australian studio Team Bondi. Seven long years it took for the game to be made, and after its release in May of 2011, it was met with great critical acclaim, and nearly 4 million units sold. Normally success stories like this can lead to the rise of a new developer team. But the saga behind the scenes leads to a different tale.

After months of speculation, confirmed corporate buyouts, ultimatums to find new jobs, and entering administration back in September, Team Bondi has officially closed it’s doors. According to Edge Magazine, official documentation has been filed to the Australian Securities and Investments Commission to liquidate the remaining assets of the company to pay outstanding debts. As for the I.P of L.A. Noire, it is already in the hands of Take-Two interactive, and will likely appoint Rockstar games as the primary developer for possible sequels.

The inner conflict at Team Bondi during the development of L.A. Noire is pretty much a well-known fact in the gaming world now. The timeline of events that fell over the development team is, in many ways, tragic yet poetic. Former head of the studio, Brendan McNamara, was reportedly very tyrannical over his employees, forcing unpaid overtime shifts and arduous work schedules to make sure the game was complete and perfect. It got to the point where Rockstar cut ties with Team Bondi, and McNamara independently sold all of the assets to the Australian Film Company KMM.

So what went wrong? A lot can be said but should be saved for another day. In the end though, the rise and fall of Team Bondi can serve as a cautionary tale for the future, that obsession and hardship, while yielding amazing results, can also lead to your downfall. As Sam Spade once said in the immortalizing flick The Maltese Falcon, “This, is what dreams are made of.”

That’s what happens when the development head is a perfectionist – you will always find something to polish up or change to make the game “perfect”. Perfection is a myth, an unreachable ideal. When a game is already good, trying to improve it can actually hurt it instead: by adding or overpolishing details and thus making them not quite fit. And it wastes time and resources.

The producers of the project need distance – they must love their work, but they also must know when to say “enough, time to release”. Otherwise you’ll end up with a product that was stuck in development for years, and may be good or great even at release, but definitely not as good as you’d expect considering how long it took to make it.

Coindentally, Extra Credits made an episode just about that. Check them out.

More importantly, a development head with zero people skills and absolutely no empathy. Anyone on the team but him was perfectly expendable in his eyes.

So I dearly hope he never gets a job in the games industry ever again lest we have more legions of burnt out artists and programmers who never want to work in the gaming industry ever again.

    We hardly knew ye.

And people wonder why I don’t try to join a company that makes games as my job. Because every Australian one seems like it’s closing down before it can consolidate itself.

What went wrong? They took SEVEN years to make the game. That’s a pretty big problem, no game should take that long. I’m sorry but that’s just a sloppy production, not even Valve are that slow… yet. The tech behind the game was interesting but that’s really all that was amazing about that game, there was so much that needed to be fleshed out and made better. If I didn’t KNOW the game took that long to develop, I’d swear it was rushed and half-finished.
