For those in service to the Emperor, free downloadable content will be coming. On October 25th, those who have been exterminating the Xeno threat shall be treated with the Exterminatus DLC. This particular co-op DLC will give players two different scenarios where they fight off both the Orks and the legions of Chaos. Each scenario supports up to four players as well. For those unfamiliar with the developers, Relic has a long history of working on Warhammer 40k with the Dawn of War titles, but recently switched it up to action/shooter with Space Marine. If you’re curious about the title, feel free to check out Johnny’s gameplay of the demo, and James’ review of the title.
Also, if you’re not familiar with Exterminatus, click this video link.
For the emperor!

In the grim darkness of the far future, there is only WAR. Where the forces of the Xenos and the legions of the Heretics spread their decay and ruin, the Adeptus Astartes will be there to repel the invaders and punish those who dare set foot on the lands christened in the Golden Emperor’s kingdom. This is the life, of a Space Marine.

In the universe of man, there is only one place for the xeno filth of the universe: Dead at the bottom of a ditch. In the fringes of space, humanity finds itself in a neverending war with aliens and deities the likes we’ve never seen. There is no pity from the Legions of Chaos from the Eye of Terror, as they seek to raze the imperium of man to dust, and there is no remorse from the Necron, a race of skeletal cyborgs subservient to the cause of wiping out all living life forms across the stars. There is no end to the Tyranid horde, a massive wave of predatory primordials that exist to feed on all living tissue, and there is no hope to stop the Ork WAAAAAAAAAGH, the battlecry that heralds the downfall of countless settlements in systems as the Orkish hordes ravage and raze everything in sight to fuel their bloodlust maddened rampage.
When you’re up against odds like this, throwing in the towel seems like the best strategic option. However, the forces of man have more than enough assets to keep these threats at bay. The one we’re going to talk about today is none other than the Adeptus Astartes, the superhuman walking tanks that show no fear and destroy any threat to the sanctity of humankind in its path.
Today, we read of one of the many legends of the Space Marines.
| PROS | Tough as nails shooter, Exhaustive multiplayer, Impressive presentation |
| CONS | Incredibly predictable story, Chaos felt somewhat tacked on, Simplistic |
| WTF?! | What’s the level above “Ultraviolence”? |
On the Forge World of Graia, one of many factory planets that supplies the war effort of the kingdom of men, an invasion force of over a million Orks has set down upon the planet to ravage and loot materials from Manufactorum Ajakis. This industrial sector of the planet produces multiple types of war munitions ranging from bolter rounds to automatic turrets and houses a manufacturing plant for Warlord Class Titans, gigantic mechanical biped walkers that can change the tide of battle in an instant. While the strategic value of this asset is extremely high, using the extreme force of Exterminatus, a last resort to scorch a planet of xenos infestation, or orbital bombardment would prove to be more harm than good even if the world is recaptured to the strategic assets.
Therefore, the Adeptus Astartes Ultra, the Ultramarines, are deployed to Graia to cripple the invasion forces before the liberation fleet arrives to retake the planet. While the armored men in blue begin to repel the greenskins, a man named Drogan, a high ranking Inquisitor in the Ordo Xenos (Alien Hunters), requests the aid of the Space Marines to secure high risk Imperial assets that are vital to the struggle against all xeno encounters across the sector. Little do they know that by helping the Inquisition, they risk switching this planet’s demise from that of the aliens to that of heresy.
While the story is a little fluffy, and will only tide you over for about 8 hours of total play time, it is also a basic story that the Space Marines of the 40K Universe have to deal with on a constant basis, and one I will probably revisit more than once: The Xenos invade, the Astartes arrive, ultraviolence for the Emperor, go home for some supper, repeat. One of the stinging problems that hovered over the campaign on top of this is how incredibly predictable it is. I was playing through the campaign with my friend looking on and we were both calling out the plot twists within hours of them happening, so don’t expect a Pulitzer from Space Marine.
You take control of Captain Titus, leader of the Ultramarines incursion on Graia. With the products of the manufactorum at your disposal, you must prevent the looting of the Titan war machines and repel any greenskin forces. Flanked by Sidonus, Veteran Sargeant of the Ultramarines with greenskin blood on his mind, and Leandros, a new inductee to the order that goes out of his way to let the Codex Astartes guide his hand rather than his battle experience, the Ultramarines work in tandem to help the Imperial Guard root out the Orks and reclaim Graia for their own.
I just don’t understand how this game got so many good reviews. (Warhammer fans are that prevalent?)
Besides the lackluster story and poor, downright POOR design for levels, (hey look the entire area is gray that’s been splashed over with orange, now check out your armor it’s all blue and everything that’s important glows a bright blue from new guns to ammo) and the straight as hell no surprises mechanics of a boring hack n’ slash there’s just something about this game that screams no originality.
People down rated a poster here that noted the similarities between this game and the Gears series but I seriously don’t blame him.
I’ll probably rent this when I’m in the mood for Orkz hunting.
When I played the demo, I wasn’t that impressed. I am vaguely aware of the 40K Universe and heard the lore of the Space Marines and while I can see it in the game, the demo couldn’t hold my interest.
Thankfully, this review has slightly changed my view and I might try to seek out this game in the future. Someone has to begin a PS3 Division for Angry Joe’s 40K forces. XD
Pffft Legiones Astartes thats so M .31
It’s Codex Astartes for the last 10 000 years. Hollyness of Space Marines could be far and widely disputed. (For one they aren’t zealous at least in religious sence. The don’t see emperor as a god, but merely as an exceptional man. They aren’t very holly. While they are essentialy his product, there arent holly as such, since he wanted to free mankind of religgions and superstitions and such.
Besides the Imperium of Man does have real holly warriors. Adeptus Soorias are so holly they have an invoulnerable saves (even the vehicles).
I like the game a lot, and I agree with some of the points made here. I think the main problem people will have with it will be the repetition in the Single player. I really didn’t have much of a problem with it, as I like that sort of “Kill it if it moves” mayhem. But I could see where someone into traditional third person action/adventure games may tire of it. The Multiplayer on the other hand has been a lot of fun for me. I feel it gives something to the Arena shooter crowd, while at the same time keeping the levelling system for fans of modern wartime shooters. At the same time going from shooting to slaying to shooting is really smooth, and doesn’t have a disjointedness to it. I do hope they will add more WH40k character types to it. I Would love to use Orks, Eldar, etc.
When i play this game, i can almost smell blood.
The only Con i think sould be added is that MP is Port to port, people keep saying its good for cobnsoles…but i dont know why.
ok i just want to say that multiplayer is awesome and it has customization
i am currently working my way thougt the story and so far the game is really soild the only thing i have notied is it becomes extremly easy if you stand at range and pot shot them in the head sens they die from 1 shot and if you get one of the big once change to the uber sinper rifle 2 shots in the head and dead and you take almost no dmg
and for ppl who say this is a gear of war rip off, it is not the only thing in commen is the third person prespetiv. the way you do combat, the way you get hp how the weapons feel all very very diffrent (i’d like to see sombody just rush and melee ppl in gear of war and see how that works out)
there are a few thing that nags at me with the PC port, no windowed mode that i could find, not option for me to change with screen it was gonna use for full screen no private servers all small nagging points in the back of my head that disspoint me
Okay, after checking back after I posted this, I am dumbfounded that I didn’t put this as a MUST BUY.
THIS ERROR IN JUDGMENT HAS BEEN CORRECTED.
FOR KHORNE!
Weak. Gears rip off.
I’m getting kinda tired explaining this to people so I’ll just say 40k came long before gears did also this isn’t a cover based shooter and is fundamentaly nothing like Gears of War.
Oh you, you’re so silly, thinking this game is even close to Gears of War in any way.
On topic, this game is far more than a try it out. My brother, who has never done anything with the tabletop game, thoroughly enjoyed this game. Maybe you didn’t want to let your love of the TT game color your review, but in this case, it wouldn’t have mattered. Because this game is honestly the most fun I have had in a video game in a long time.
I love that one of the tags is “death to the corpse emperor”.
Know this heretic you will feel the pain of my power axe FOR LEMAN RUSS FOR THE EMPEROR!
Impurity shall be my armor.
Hate shall be my weapon.
Immortality shall be my reward.
Oh, and i’m sure there are many others who wish to fly the Awesome Company and Sons of Blister colors. So if you could, please post the details.
I will make a post in the Community forums under the Guild/Clans section about the color scheme. Hopefully I can get a good picture of it from my iPhone, because I have this for X360.
Basically, a lot of Bolter Grey for primary, and Sunburnt Yellow/Gore Red for trimming. I was mainly trying to emulate the yellow, white and red on a gray background that’s on the Blistered Thumbs logo.
I’ve got a simple but neat looking design for yah. With the space marine i go all battle damaged parts except for the standard breastplate with colors of black and grey, then make the right arm pure brandished gold with the relic armor forearm and master crafted shoulder.
I can only guess that you decided on the “try it out” recommendation is because you felt your WH 40k fandom may have affected your review. I can honestly say that as someone who was never a fan or had much of any interest of the table top game or the other games that this game deserves nothing less than “Buy it now.” It is simply glorious. From the instant i played the demo to my first game in the multiplay i could not stop squealing at the awesomeness this game bleeds. To the point that i am now seeking out how to start playing the table top game.
Oh, and i disagree that the chaos feel tacked on to the game, it felt more like the equivalent to the flood in Halo. A sort of kill all the Orks(covenant), oh holy hell the Chaos(flood) are coming we are boned. Not that i’m saying one is a rip off of the other, i’m just comparing them from a storytelling standpoint.
I’m Kuro92 and just like the advertisements i find myself saying “I am a Space Marine”
I just felt that they paced their arrival poorly. In part III, BAM, Chaos arrive. What happens in part III/IV? Lots of Ork killing or Ork/Chaos fighting each other.
While I didn’t mind this at first, Relic put Chaos as not as immediate a threat in contrary to when Nemeroth appears in TERMINATOR ARMOR ready to pull your spine out your ass with his mind. It’s basically “HEY! WE’RE HERE TO FUCK YOUR SHIT UP, but we’re not going to be an immediate and present threat until the endgame.” If they made it so that Chaos was more visible in III, and then move the Warboss fight to near the end of IV, that probably would have been better pacing.
@Hidden Distance: Far worse when you Are an Australian, with probably 14 other Australians, and there’s one North American with host : | (Actually I only had troubles the first two games, haven’t had bad lag since)
P.S. Compared to other Relic DoW storylines this one is complex! Or at least subtle… see Kyras!
After spending a good 8 hours slogging through the campaign on Normal… I am sorry but Space Marine did not do as well as it sounds. The story is not engaging, there are not enough moments like the death of the warboss. Chaos was poorly implemented to the point that several of their fights felt very rough and as if Relic had not really play tested them. The characters are flat for the most part, Mira was one of the very few characters with any depth or emotion. Personally I feel the story side of things is due to the game focused on the most bland and horrid of the space marines. If we had gone with any other chapter so much more depth and feeling could have been pumped in and made Space Marine more enjoyable. Then again what do I know I just play the tabletop and read the fluff for the universe.
I just have to say too, Titus is voiced by Mark Strong.
How badass is that? That guy’s voice is packing so much timbre it might as well be a lumber mill.
Say what? Oo
Damn German dubbing!
Does anyone know if the EU version supports multiple languages?
Sinestro? In my game?
It’s more likely that you think!
I enjoyed the campaign and am enjoying the multiplayer, but the P2P matching system on PC was a thorough disappointment. I often find myself matching with someone hosting on what I can only imagine is a 386 on dialup, and he’s playing with 15 of his friends along with me, but they all reside in Australia.
P2P aside, if I at least got a browser so I could vet which games I would want to join and which games I wouldn’t based on ping/server performance, that would be nice but the ‘join game’ wait & hope plan really sucks.
That’s sadly a location thing, because while there is obvious game lag, there is no problem with hosts or host transfer on 360. Everytime a host would disconnect, it would probably only take a couple of seconds for the game to secure a new player to host. I was honestly impressed by it as I know well how bad host migration can be (See: Monday Night Combat).
A few of the host transfers have.. well – just simply not happened. It goes to transfer, two minutes later you just decide to chuck it and join a different game.
This is my first experience with a P2P matching environment and I’m not impressed.
Well so far I’ve had only one lag match like that on PC multiplayer, and that one was able to be migrated to a better host.
I would have liked Dedicated Servers or even a LAN mode on PC but it is what it is.
I will say the P2P is not as problematic as Modern Warfare 2 was when it came out.
That game host migrated every few minutes no matter who I was paired with.
All of that said, I’m in New England, I don’t know how well traffic is in your neck of the woods.

With Quest for Glory I firmly in the bag, Johnny produces a diary of his Quest for Glory II character, Blistardo Thumbulous, for your perusal, in another retro installment of his Quest for Glory Collection examination.
Dedicated servers/no lag problems would be better, but on the bright side all the people I’ll be playing the co-op with live locally so that will hopefully mitigate the issues.
Nice to get the date confirmation – ‘October’ just wasn’t cutting it.
Cheers!
That’s cool, but I’m wondering about maps for the normal MP…you know at the moment there’s only like five.
