Wii 25-in-25: The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword

We are less than a month away from Link’s latest adventure. Thankfully, Nintendo has showcased a trio of new trailers to sedate our tastes for a while longer, along with a gallery of screenshots as an extra bonus.
The three trailers are also in English, so we get a sneak peak at some secrets of the Skyward Sword universe and how things will likely work as we play the game. So let’s not waste any more time and dive right in. The first trailer is the Eldin Volcano.
Right away, we get a feel of the scope of Skyward Sword as Link does a nose dive from his pet Loftwing to the world below the clouds. He lands on a patchy piece of dirt, where the sword itself tells him about the Eldin volcano being an active place “rich with the power of the earth.” We then see Link use the sword as a dowsing rod, searching for buried pieces of a giant key around a temple in a first-person perspective. The control modes and HUD are always displayed on the bottom and the right-hand side, and if you feel they are cluttering the screen to much you can remove them as they are optional.
Chances are the key Link is trying to construct will open up the dungeon that before you, which is the subject of our second video, the Earth Temple.
the Earth Temple seems to have a dual theme of fire and rock going on, lakes of lavas strewn the temples floor, with rock-head basins pouring amounts of molten earth into the pits. We see Link and his log-rolling prowess as he navigates the lakes of fire on a giant boulder, fighting off Kse-Kses and Lizalfos when appropriate. No word on what type of item you would get in the temple yet, although the screen-shots below a pair of gauntlets can be acquired, so perhaps that is the temple item we need. The temple boss is Scaldera, the crag-like Rocktite monster that hurls fireballs at you on a linear track.
Our third video is perhaps the most enigmatic of the three, our first look at the Goddess Cubes.
These mysterious blocks seem to be strewn across the landscape of the Eldin volcano. With one swift movement of the sword it seems like Link releases some sort of energy to the sky. Later, we see him flying his Loftwing in the sky, using the map to navigate to a new area that looks like a hole in the sky, a mini volcano. After parachuting in, we see Link open a mysterious treasure chest…and a fade to black.
No idea what those Goddess Stones are yet, but they seem to be tied to these purplish-treasure chests. We can only guess what is inside, but it must be something big.
Along with the slew of screenshots below, it is clear Nintendo is banking on Skyward Sword to be their hit for the Nintendo Wii this year.
| PROS: | Great shooting mechanics, Paintball is fun, Diverse gun selection |
| CONS: | Soundtrack is terrible, game has no story mode |
| WTF: | WTF Text Here |

Bringing Motion Plus capability to this 25 year old franchise, Skyward Sword will be the final Zelda game to appear this console generation. In all likeliness this will be the swan song title for the Wii with the next Nintendo home console arriving on shelves next year. Does send the console out with a bang? More importantly does it live up to the expectations Zelda fans have no doubt heaped upon it? Find out here

You know, some games with long histories sometimes get a special treatment in small ways, like a book highlighting its successes or a re-release of the original title commemorating the anniversary. You got to hand it to Nintendo though; when they want to give you something, they go all out!

Skyward Sword is finally here, was it worth the wait!?

I’m a little disappointed to see a BT review following the trend set by every other reviewer. Granted, I don’t expect a font of wisdom dripping from each and every word, but I find myself genuinely let-down by the level of generic here.
Every other reviewer and their dog has pitched in about how good SS is, but the ones that do invariably use the same tired language.
“expressing himself in a way not seen since Wind Waker”
“deeper characters than previous Zelda games”
“works far better than the previous system”
Comparing a game to its previous iteration is a given, but comparing it SOLELY to that is not. It’s clear that you hold this game to the standards of Zelda games only, and not to games as a whole.
For instance, I’m guessing, since they were your listed cons, that the hit and miss graphics and motion plus implementation are the main reason this game got a 9/10. I can infer, then, that you thought that the story deserved full marks.
How deep are these characters, as shown in this game, compared to other games? How interesting is this narrative, compared to other games? How meaningful are your choices, compared to other games?
The answer? Not very. Groose, a character you wink at in this review, is a paper cut-out in comparison, who spends literally half of the game crying a corner, and the other half developing off-screen. Groose is not a well-handled character, except in the context of Zelda games, which have traditionally had weakly-developed characters.
Skyward Sword is fun, for a bit. But it is sorely lacking in more areas than one, and definitely doesn’t deserve the label of “an utter triumph in entertainment.” Quality is subjective, and you’re free to your opinion, but the criteria on which you base your opinion, how it measures up to Other Zelda games, leaves this review pretty useless.
Well crap. Not quite sure how this comment ended up here, but this is the wrong place for it.
Please ignore.
Skyward Sword does seem like very good game. Too bad that you can’t play it without Wii Motion Controller.
The Legend of Zelda, originally released as The Hyrule Fantasy: Legend of Zelda. in Japan, is a video game developed and published by Nintendo, and designed by Shigeru Miyamoto and Takashi Tezuka.[
no it’s really not, you play on Wii, you should expect to utilize motion controls. simple as that
Gotta say: Groose’s theme is becoming my favorite “buffoon” theme ever.
now the video of the gameplay looks low res, but it looks like link has no underpants on when he is flying tough the sky.
For a very weird and funny easter egg. In the cave before the sand seas summon the gossip stone in the middle of the room then pick up a bomb and place in back down. Then run away and turn around. Believe me when I say you won’t be disappointed.
VERY happy to learn that Tingle isn’t in this game. But why did Beedle have to return?
Great work as always PBG
WHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAT? NO TINGLE?!! NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!
LOL
thanks PBG for the quick first impression. i intend to get the game on black Friday. not sure if it will have a super deal but i guess i can be patient enough till then.
peace.
I’m glad this game is getting such great reviews, even though I’ve been dodging the lot of them to avoid all forms of spoilers, I got a week before I can get the game myself.
Uh PBG? You do know that what you have here is the top 10 list of Zelda dungeon tunes. You need to actually put your Skyword Sword “review” on instead of a video we’ve already seen on BT. Just to let you know.
LOL. I got JonTron to do it for me because I’m out of town with very limited internet access. I’ll call him up and see if he can fix it.

Welcome back to the discussion show where we introduce the debate and you continue it. This week’s topic: Shaun and Johnny Maloney discuss the past & future of Star Wars video games.
My Wii console is ready… my body is ready… my soul is ready!
Sad thing is on some parts Twilight Princess looks better.
Is it just me or do the 3D Zelda games often come out towards the end of the console they are made for’s lifespan?
N64′s on its last legs!…Time to release Ocarina of time and Majora’s Mask on N64!
The Revolution has just been announced…time to release Twlight Princess on gamecube! (and later get a port for the new name for the revolution: the wii!)
Wii U just announced!….time to release Skyward sword for the wii!
Only Exception I can think of is Wind Waker
I for one KNOW that this game will be good, but with this being the only REAL Nintendo Wii game coming out this year, it’s got a lot of weight on its shoulders.
This is especially concerning, because anyone who ONLY has a Wii was pretty much left in the dust this year, so the only way this year could be worth it for them is if Zelda Skyward is MORE than just another great Zelda game. Kind of sad, because with that much hype, it’s only being set up for disappointment. =(
I preordered the special edition on Amazon! Can’t wait to play it =P.
My body is READY!
Meh.
Want…so…badly.
