Platforms:
Gears of War 3 is the final chapter in Epic's gritty shooter. Gears plunges players into a harrowing tale of hope, survival, and brotherhood. With the last human city destroyed and the remaining survivors stranded, time is running out for Marcus and his comrades as they fight to save the human race from the jaws of extinction.

The end of 2011 is presented by the number 3. Within the closing months of the year we have already had Resistance 3 and Deus Ex 3. Still to come this fall are Uncharted 3, Battlefield 3, COD: MW3 and even part 3 of Ezio’s story in Assassins Creed: Revelations. To some gamers out there though there is only one 3 they are interested in, Gears of War 3. Finishing off the trilogy that started back in 2006, Gears 3 tells the final tale in humanities battle for survival on the world of Sera and the last time fans will be seeing Marcus Fenix. Well, until Microsoft hire a new company to make a 4th game!

PROSBest looking game on 360, a wide selection of modes, improved friendly AI in combat, amazing soundtrack, great pacing
CONSClumsy enemy AI, predictable story, feels like you missed a chapter, new characters badly introduced, the campaign mode is too easy when played alone
WTF?!Why the hell was no one playing Hordes mode during the review period, oh and the ending song!

Things have not been good for the gears. It turns out that the Lambent problem has spread across the world like wildfire and since the sinking of Jacinto, humanity is surviving in small bands across the world. The command structure has broken down and only through the efforts of Delta team has any semblance of order been maintained within the military. However, moments into the game Marcus receives a message from someone long thought dead and is soon setting off to try and discover the truth behind the Locust and Lambent threat.

If you have played a Gears of War game, you know exactly what to expect here in terms of controls. The only real change is that you now have to hold the X button to pick up any item, meaning accidental weapon swaps are a thing of the past. The campaign gameplay for the most part follows the same structure it has in the previous games, but with a few tweaks that I’ll discuss momentarily. The truth is if you were a Gears fan before, this game is going to blow you away, on the other hand, if you weren’t you may want to at least check this one out. The changes made here may appear minor on paper, but they actually make a huge impression on the way the game is played.

For those who haven’t been following the build up to GOW3, you may not know that the biggest change to the campaign is the inclusion of 4 player co-op. No longer will you have to be escorted round by 2 AI characters, but instead can form a full contingency of players within Delta. This actually has a bigger impact on the game than simply getting more friends involved.

Giant creepy fish versus walking mech, just another day in the COG

GOW3 is huge, in design and in scope. Levels are no longer 2 path sections with randomly placed chest high walls at convenient points along the way. Now that teams can be comprised of multiple human players, the developers have designed the levels with this in mind, creating huge open environments where tactical spacing and cross fire is the name of the game. Nigh on every section in the game promotes players to split up and use the multiple routes provided to gain the advantage on your foes or attract fire so that your allies can move up to a better firing position themselves. Sure, there are still chest high walls scattered through every level for you to hide behind and open fire from cover, but these, for the most part, have been integrated into the environments themselves, looking like part of the scenery, rather than random chunks of concrete.

Speaking of the environments, I thought Epic Games had hit a point where they could do no better during Bulletstorm (overlooking the dam), but somehow they have managed to improve upon the Unreal Engine once again. Every level of the game is a beauty unto itself. Enter any town within the game and you can see architectural bliss within the chaos that is Sera, with buildings displayed in high detail and draw distances that make the mind boggle. Add into this the new shading textures they have implemented on the character models and you’ll find that GOW3 is easily the best looking game to have graced the Xbox 360 and possibly any console game. Honestly, I love the Uncharted games, but Naughty Dog are going to have to really pull out all the stops to top this level of quality. From Volumetric effects to lighting, GOW3 is a tough one to beat.

It's the Trashball skin for the COLE TRAIN BABY!

Back on to the subject of the campaign though, GOW3 has something a lot of games lack and that’s pacing. If you haven’t seen it I highly suggest you jump over to Penny-Arcade to watch the Extra Credits on this subject. The series has never really been known for doing this in the past, but this latest installment perfectly paces itself through the entire campaign. At first it’s a little jarring to constantly be drawn out of combat to listen to character conversation or watch a cutscene, but once you get used to the new speed at which the game wants to run, you’ll find yourself enjoying the experience a whole lot more than the previous 2 titles.

The game carefully balances the action and the story, taking a break from both at exactly the right moments, building action and excitement with skillful timing. Even in painfully predictable story moments, the game handles the events with such grace and style that you can’t help but be drawn into the experience. As with all Gears titles, there are sections of the game where the developers wanted to build tension with slight horror elements (the imulsion factory in Gears 1 and the mansion in Gears 2). In Gears 3 however, the developers handle this event slightly differently, easily creating one of the most memorable creepy moments in recent gaming history.

All this is presented incredibly well despite the previously mentioned predictable plot. Don’t expect any awards to be thrown Epic’s way when it comes to the award time for GOW3′s story. Yes, it handles the end of the trilogy with grace and does not allow itself to get swept away by its own popularity, but if you’re expecting something other than a plot on level with the recent A-Team movie, you’re going to be disappointed. It’s interesting enough and the collectable items scattered throughout the world add some interesting back-story, but you just feel a bit of subtly would have been appreciated. Hell, I can even guess right now what the campaign DLC pack that Epic have already promised will be about!

Weirdly, GOW3 has some very odd surreal moments within the game. Not only does the game open with a nightmare sequence that is either genius or completely out of place, but adds another scene exactly like this randomly within the first chapter of the game. I don’t know if other characters experience moments like this if you happen to be playing them at the time, but I’ll tell you now that you’ll see it coming, but never believe it when it happens. They’re just weird.

The game totally deserves the score it got. I picked up Gears 1 & 2 earlier this year after having tried the Gears 3 Beta upon purchasing Bulletstorm. I hated the MP in Gears 1, it just seemed lacking, but Gears 2 had some improvements. But Gears 3 they knocked the ball out of the park. It runs smoother, no more “the host has removed you from the game” random disconnections, the playing field seems more balanced, and even scrubs like myself can do decently well.

Horde Mode is awesome. But why rag on the Beast Mode? You’re seriously knocking a mode where you can take control of one of those damned Beserkers and just run through everything and crush it? It’s very satisfying.

The Arcade mode is great for the campaign to. I love killing something and seeing big numbers fly up. I played it on Hardcore split-screen and despite a few rough patches the game seemed somewhat easy until the very end when it got balls hard. (F.U. Armored Kantus)

Is the story cheesy? Yes. Are the characters cheesy? A bit. But there’s a fair bit of character development this time around and even still, you shouldn’t let a cheesy story detract from the excellent and enjoyable gamplay.

Gears 3 is just good dumb fun.

I love how people will hate on something because it’s not something THEY like so everyone else has to dislike it too, or else your just a “fanboy”.
Then the game comes out and there is ACTUALLY something to judge now… and what do you know, it’s pretty damn good.

It’s nice to see all the improvements they’ve done to gears 3. It truly shows they listened to the fans and tried to give most of what was asked for. The story and characters aren’t great but I wouldn’t expect them to be. The little time I had with the game was a blast. It made me kind of depressed that I don’t have an xbox myself. Some of the levels strongly reminded me of the old rail shooters my sister and I used to play in arcades all the time. I’m not really a gears fan and I would still recommend giving the game a shot. Just take it like a fun action flick and don’t try to pick it apart too much.

I can’t help but think that 99% of the people on here bashing a game THAT ISN’T EVEN OUT YET haven’t played a single minute of a Gears of War game. I get it, it’s popular…therefore all of the pseudo ”underground gamers” must think it sucks. FIGHT THE MAN! Yeah!! … You guys are a joke, go fap to screen shots of Zelda.

Good review, thanks for taking a critical stance and giving the positives that make the game stand apart, and the faults that make it unapealing. As for some of the people trolling; sadly fanboys will be fanboys, and will completly rail against a title because they, or their friends, do not like its predecessors or its game play style.

I’m sorry you feel that way. As I stated in the review Gears 2 did next to nothing for me really. It was exactly the same as the first game, which while I enjoyed, did require improvements.

Having actually spent a week or so with Gears 3, I could see that the 3rd instalment did not fall into the same trap as the 2nd.

I appreciate people (including yourself) may be dubious of the final score, based upon your opinions of the previous games, but trust me when I say, no one was more shocked than me that Gears 3 ended up getting the score it did. You have to give credit where it’s due.

I’m not exactly sure why you are getting thumbs up for this, as, to make this comment, you have to have not read the review. The entire review is about how this fixes all the problems in the first two titles. To then come out and say you won’t try it because you didn’t like the first one is ignorant and nonsensical.

Gears 3: RAAM’s Shadow Review

Gears 3: RAAM’s Shadow Review

Despite the fact that the Gears of War series is at an end with the third installment, it doesn’t mean that there can’t be side stories told of the conflict on Sera. Released on December 13th for the Xbox 360, RAAM’s Shadow is a story campaign that serves as a prequel to the original Gears of War. As per usual, it’s time to answer the questions that often arise with downloadable content like this: What is in it, how much does it cost, and is it worth the price of entry? Well, allow me to answer these questions for you before you spend your hard-earned cash.

The setting of RAAM’s Shadow is, as I said before, prior to the events of the first Gears of War game. You play as Michael Barrick and Zeta team, which is lead by Lt. Kim from the original Gears. The team consists of the aforementioned Kim, Barrick (a character from the Gears of War comics), a younger, slimmer Tai Kaliso from Gears 2, and a new character named Alicia Valera who is voiced by Alicia Tyler. The story tells two sides simultaneously though, as you also control General RAAM and some of his elite soldiers as they prepare the way for the mass genocide of an entire city.

The story’s quality is solid for an action title. Though it’s not exactly a character driven story, it does keep a basic idea of what it wants to tell, and then molds the action around it. The thing about Epic and the Gears series is that they’ve become masters at telling a good story that allows them to blow things up in the same way that other major shooter developers do without compromising the quality of the plot. Thus, we get an airtight narrative with some great storytelling moments that don’t often break for a cutscene and a bathroom break. I often use the Predator reference with Gears, and I think it still holds true. You’ve got some cool characters that are a little more than archetype that are fun to be around, and you see them in dark scenarios fighting monsters.

For those long-time Gears fans and/or those who follow the expanded universe, you'll see some familiar faces.

The main purpose of the story, however, is to flesh out the Gears universe. What we see here is the beginning of the Locust slaughter, and there’s a reason I use the word “genocide.” These creatures are the lizard version of Nazis. They kill indiscriminately, and thus the story is very dark throughout. If you don’t like an action plot with serious moments or dark moments, you’ll hate this DLC. At the same time, you probably hate Gears for those same reasons, and should probably just walk away now. For those who enjoy this type of narrative, you’ll love it, because all the dark moments make the heroic moments and moments of success that much brighter.

Going on about developing the Gears universe, the great dialog that the series has shown throughout still applies to this downloadable content. Through regular banter between the Gears, we learn exactly what the COG is, and what life is like on Sera for these people. It’s a harsh, bloody world where death seems to be around every corner because your enemies are relentless monsters, and the government you serve is comparable to Soviet Russia. Even cooler is the fact you get to play as those aforementioned monsters. Playing as RAAM serves a point within the story, because you get to see exactly how malicious and evil these beasts are, on top of the power that they wield. Since I don’t really want to spoil what’s going on, let’s just say through him you learn the Locust military method, and see exactly how cold the Locust war machine is.

Lunch Money. Now.

Now that I’ve got all the story bits out of the way, let’s talk about the content of the DLC, considering the gameplay and presentation really haven’t changed too much. Were you to read a press release, it would sound simplistic. RAAM’s Shadow contains three and a half hours of a new campaign, six more multiplayer skins, and a few new weapons skins. Doesn’t sound like much, right? Wrong. There is quite a bit to enjoy here. The extra skins and weapons looks really are just icing on the cake. The meat of the DLC, the campaign itself, is right on par with the rest of Gears of War 3’s disc based single player.

RAAM’s Shadow is three plus hours of intense combat that gives you quite a bit of bang for your buck. Aside from the fact that you get to play as some awesome Locust units to mix things up, the scenarios that the game throws at you within the DLC are fantastic. Each new section is an action packed romp that delivers every thrill that the series has been able to give up to this date. The firefights are excellent, it’s a great little time for you and up to three more friends, and it never disappoints. The only problem is that sometimes the AI has issues, but Yousif already covered that in his review of the full title, and I’d suggest you read that review. My British friend was right on the money with it.

To close this one out, I think that the last thing that needs to be said is RAAM’s Shadow follows what should be considered the legacy of Gears of War. Though pretentious folk will make brown jokes and portray masculinity as a negative, those who see the game for what it is will see the best shooter series of this generation. RAAM’s Shadow is an excellent piece of DLC that is worth the price of entry. Most shooter expansions are sold on discs for forty bucks or more and give the same amount of content. In fact, I’d argue that this game contains as much content as Halo 3: ODST, but it’s one quarter of the cost. If you enjoy Gears of War, you need to pick up RAAM’s Shadow the minute you have the time. Then again, if you got the season pass, you get one of the best pieces of DLC I’ve played this year for free.

Kicking myself for not buying the season pass.

-Micah C.

Gears of War 3: RAAM’s Shadow was purchased by the reviewer for 1200 Microsoft Points ($15). The campaign was completed in three hours and thirty minutes, give or take.

I really enjoyed the gears series and cant wait for the next installment(u know there will be more games since it sold so well) . I get people were not too crazy about the dialogue. It didn’t bother me, I’d prefer it be a serious story with bits of humor instead of the other way around ala bullet storm(the humor mostly from cole and barid, with barid providing a line that actually made me laugh out loud, something games rarely make me do no matter how hard they try.). This was the best effort of the gears games, and GOW has always been about high production value and tight gameplay so thats saying something. When a game sticks with you after you play it you know it did it’s job and gears 3 did that for me. I am looking forward to play ramms shadow and this review confirmed (for me at least) it is well worth the 15 dollars, hell reading some of the comments and the review ,this dlc has lots more value then a lot of other shooters out there. This is MY game of the year, just My humble opinion. Afterall i did think BF3 had a better campaign then MW3…

It might be worth noting out that Alicia is voiced by Aisha Tyler, the actress and recent voice actress, not Alicia Tyler who according to Google is a porn star. Should we scratch this one up as a Freudian slip?

Brown jokes? About Gears of War? But it’s such a colourful game! /sarcasm
Honestly, the last few years games have gone under the slogan ‘The Future is Brown.’ Fallout series, RAGE, GoW, just to name a few. Bulletstorm was a breath of fresh air in that they at least put some colour into the game. Hell, even my bitter hatred of Halo is dampened by the fact it has colour.
I’m tired of staring into a sewer on my screen. Bring back colour!

I’m gonna have to disagree. I mean I played both Bulletstorm and Gears of War 3, and honestly they have just about the same color palette. Also if you really believe Gears 3 is just brown, then you probably need to play it again, you haven’t played it or you’re just talking out of your ass.

I enjoyed this DLC. You get a good deal of content for the price, some full retail games have single player portions that are about as long as this DLC. I was mainly reminded how little I liked Kim & Jace and Tai is weird. Barrick is pretty cool badass even if I felt like his voice didn’t quite match his looks and Valera was okay I suppose. There was some well layed out and challenging shootouts (I played on hardcore, I might give it a go on insane at some point) but I disagree about nothing else being usable than Lancer as I played the whole thing with Longshot & Sawed-Off.

The bits where you got to play as RAAM were cool as hell, I would have liked to play more as him but then again I know it would have got repetetive as he doesn’t have all that many attacks in his arsenal so I guess it’s always better to have people asking for more than the other way around. He is overpowered but he should be, he was a complete pain to beat in Gears 1 and getting to play as him reflects that.

I had a good time returning to Gears as it is among my best games of the year. People love to rag on it about the story and characters and dialogue but it sets out the universe and tone well and executes telling the story very well, much better than most shooters. If anything I’d love the game to be cheesier, some times I feel like they try to cater to the people who don’t like the cheese-factor by adding too much serious drama into the narrative.

At first I was going to really like GOW3, but pretty much near the end, I felt like NC by saying “STOP F#$%ING FIGHTING!” Yeah, I got really tired of the last act since it was looking for an excuse to drag out the game with as many mundane shoot-outs as possible (and to agree with Sage, you might as well not bother with any other weapon since the Lancer and Hammer Burst Rifle are too powerful to begin with).

I also found that anytime they were trying to be dramatic, it seemed more really funny rather than dramatic, but I will give it this, the game really had a lot of effort behind it, I was expecting to hate this game yet I did end up somewhat enjoying it, but I didn’t hold on to it for too long. May be annoying to me, but I’ll let it pass.

After playing The Missing Link from DX3, I realised that the last thing I want from DLC is just more of the same from games where, by the end of the campaign, I was more than satisfied.

I liked Gears 3, but that last act, one of the most repetitive, soul-destroyingly mundane moments I’ve experienced all year, made me damn sure I was done with the series. I’ve had my fun, time for something else.
