To add: Something that surprised me was the reading material, though I skipped most of it it still surprised me that the scientific “mumbo jumbo” was pretty accurate and interesting at times.

Not sure about this, but I suspect the reason they left out parts like the riot was that it might lag on consoles… Dunno, I’m more of PC person and the game (like most others nowadays) felt (console-)simplified.

Good review Joe. For me, I had similair views, but there were three glaring flaws.

    A) The Boss Fights. I HATED the Boss Fights. They just don’t feel like they belong there at all, no matter the reasoning. They were just repetitive and extreamly boring. I beat all three bosses in exactly the same manner – Stun them with Stun Gun or EMP Grenade, then run in and Typhoon them. Lather, rinse, repeat.

    B) The Cut Content. I have a feeling this is why a lot featured in the “Icarus Trailer” (i.e: the Square-Enixy one from E3 2010) is radically differant from the game itself. A lot was cut and shelved, and I have a nasty feeling the cut content is what they’re going to be shilling back to us as DLC. And if Front Mission Evolved’s DLC is anything to go by, they’ll be overcharging everyone for it immensly.

    C) Some control issues. I hate the key mapping on PC. All too often I get stuck in cover and unable to move properly, or I hit cover instead of activating my Iron Sights like I’m supposed to do. Éidos and Square should have looked at this closer before releasing it.

And yes, I am speaking of my experiance with the PC Version. I have not played the 30/PS3 versions, so I’m not 100% certain the same applies there for some of them.

Hey Joe – I am surprised you did not poke fun at the hilarious sounds Jensen makes when he dies. Seriously it sounds like a guy spewing his goo. It makes me laugh every time.

All the same – Joe you are right. PC version>Xbox/PS3. Esp with the new update the load time is actually normal now. Great game. Loving the story so far. I am about done with my first trip to China. :)

Joe is good as always. and a fair score.
i personally think that game was not much better when Invisible Wars (and i have suspicion that shadowing and lighting effect was better in DX2 AND there is NO mirroring effect, like in many today from-console games. wtf ? DX1 had mirror effects. is that because now all companies are too cheap to make animation for all main character model movements ?) but i liked IW and think 8/10 is perfect score.
conversations, while made great, are feel like they had more potential. for example, persuasion system is basicly using linear choice – 1 of 3 options is good, stick with it and you golden, otherwise – fail. there is no actual dialogue. story feel artificially restrained. and your progression and info acquisition are almost, _almost_, have no bearing on it. i was pretty sick of Jensen being always surprised by shit i (he) uncovered like an hour ago in a greater detail than was presented in future cutscene.

also, i should have emailed, or something, this link to Joe: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QoFe8hRy42o
awesome HR parody on DX engine. can be downloaded and played from: http://www.moddb.com/mods/deus-ex-unreal-revolution/news/deus-ex-unreal-revolution-released
and it says what i feel about DLCs better than any words could.

All I want to know is why your videos, and only your videos, seem to not buffer correctly. I always wind up having to pause and let it load. This doesn’t happen to anyone else on this site (although it does happen with Nash on TGWTT.)

Nice review Joe, though I need to point out one problem:

The desync bug is console only. Additionally, the PC version’s load times are INCREDIBLY faster. Friend played on the 360, and I saw how long they are, but my PC, which is by no means a beastly rig or anything, average load times were sub 5 seconds.

Only real issue with PC version is some really shoddy code about detecting if your computer can handle it. A lot of cards are throwing “not enough resources” error, when it’s clearly wrong. A cheap fix for this is turn AA down to Edge Only (it’s the cause of this bug) and use the nVidia or Crossfire control panel and override the setting. I have 4x AA override running and it looks great, and doesn’t throw the error at me anymore.

I enjoyed it but it felt rushed in places. I would have liked to see a Montreal City Hub and the ending came down to pushing buttons. The original actually had different missions based on the ending you were choosing which would have served this better, I think. Also, being able to buy things like soda from the vending machines would have been good too. Might have been broken stacking out candy bars but less so if they put a minor cool down on consumables or something to balance it.

Ultimately, though, besides nitpicks, it was great and earned a place as contender for game of the year.

Why wouldn’t people want augmentations that allow superhuman strength and durability? Probably for the same reason some people have a problem with businesses acting in their best (read: profitable) interest. :P

Also, a musical interlude of beating prostitutes and an expression of anticipation for DLC? Who are you and what have you done with Joe?

that reason is what was best explained in the game.
short answer: same reason that holds of stem cell research and such – actual ethics versus fucked morals based on fanatism, fear, hate and prejudice pretending to be objective and replacing ethics.

i also want to say that game was too easy. i played it on hard with stealth and no kills there was no memorable challenges if at all. in comparison to original, which is not easy on almost any difficulty. because real difficulty is not a matter of damage multipliers but of actual game design.
and for people who say that it does show “people stripped from augmentation” where by “people” they mean Malik unmodified model with blood decal on the head – it’s not only not really cut it but also is stupid, she was fucking EXPLODED and you probably killed/knocked out all resistance in that area, so – who preserved her body _and_ transported it into hide out before even you arrived there ?

love this game, I can waste hours on it, tho being a careful, sneaky hacker ninja kinda add to that X3

biggest grief tho is the boss battles, so enclosing and so liner, it´s either shoot them or shoot the enviroment.

another minor grief is there is no mid range none lethal weapon, not even a option to put a laser sight on the tranq rifle.

i pretty sure that laser is forbidden for tranquilizer rifle because darts travel on low speed and in arc unlike, you know, laser. which is fine for me but would confuse the fuck out console sissy boys.
and there is kinda mid-range non-lethal gun which is PEPS but it’s useless. so, yeah, you right.

Personally I get bored with stories that have the inevitable ‘corporations have taken over and the future is awful’ idea, it stopped being edgy by the late 90s. Still I have to admit that this game does at least do it well and has a detailed story instead of just saying ‘corporations have taken over, society is shit, go out and kill something’.
As for gameplay, I do have to complain that I couldn’t find ways to avoid killing bosses. Maybe it just goes to show that sometimes pacifism doesn’t work but it can make fighting them harder than it should be since you can start under the illusion of the ability to just put everything into stealth.
As for the police/mob thing, maybe they wanted to avoid the criticism that ‘No Russian’ got.

The bosses are completely impossible to deal with nonlethally, and killing them doesn’t affect to the Pacifist-achievement. That’s not so big problem for me as the fact that the playfield for the bossfights is so small that the tactical choices are limited to the simplest ones. There’s also the issue that the bosses lack personality, so you don’t feel as invested in the fights as you should.

Joe, I have not witnessed this personally since I saved Malik’s life in my playthrough, but I’ve been told that if you don’t manage to save her, you can later on see her remains in the Triad base stripped of her augmentations. So it’s not just background information, man.

It feels a bit funny for me how people gush about the game’s subject matter as something revolutionary after, having read dozens of books on the subject since childhood. Cyberpunk is not a new invention, folks. It’s handled in a quite solid manner though, I freely admit that, but I wish it was a bit more focused in its main plot; it seems to jumble quite a bit just to give the player an excuse to travel. That could have been handled better. The character animations were also annoyingly stiff in conversations, and the voice-acting, while solid, didn’t have any especially memorable individuals.

I’m a tad surprised seeing you praise the bossfights, too. They are unfortunately just about shooting a baddie you know almost nothing about. And unlike in the rest of the game, there are no variations to dealing with them; close quarters combat is the only thing you can do with them, which can be really annoying if you’re invested in sniping or non-lethal combat.

But stylistically and gameplaywise this game just blows my mind. I’m a stealth and guile gamer, and I love using unconventional approach methods, so this game was an excellent experience. And I fell in love with the neo-Renaissance instantly. I’m going to buy Jensen’s coat (yeah, they have it for sale), and I’d love to have an apartment like his with some tiny modifications. Though I agree that it would have been nice to see a bit more than the few back alleys and corporate bases.

I complain a lot, but I very rarely write comments this long, and I only do it because I have a lot to say about the subject. The game was really compelling, and extremly good despite of its shortcomings. I hope it gets an even better sequel.

You say you can find it cheap for PC? True. Like Dead Island I pre-ordered it cheap on greenmangaming. Deus Ex cost me 28 euro.

Best review yet Joe. Your personal best and for all Deus Ex reviews, as this was much more honest. It’s nice to see a more detailed review.
Like the score… Even though I was very disappointed I still would say it’s a 7.5 of 10, so 8/10 is nice.

I think I might give the game a second chance… When I’m done with Dead Island and Space Marine that is. (will take long time)

I’m actually surprised theirs no Bad ass seal of approval too but onward for my comment.

From what I’ve seen on Walkthroughs and the game plot the world of Deus Ex feels dangerously real to our world on the aspect of Corporations having more Power then Governments around the World, especially in recent events such as the Supreme Court ruling in favor of Walmart of the discrimination case and making it near impossible for regular people to sue corporations.

I feel the same way as Joe about how Square wasn’t afraid to talk about alot of possible future/current controversial subjects, such as Corporate Conspiracy. Let alone Conspiracy Theories due to one of the subjects near end game that are revealed.

I really want to get this game, but my Computer can’t handle its awesomeness. Let’s hope their is more to this world in the future.

“Actually”, Square Enix bought out Eidos in 2009 and it’s just a name now.
Where the hell do you think FF shilling in DX:HR came from ? Also, i bet that game was butchered from part of its storyline and censored (like there no kids in DX:HR world, as opposed to original, and Dead Island thanks to SE. why SE would want that ? to make games more “family friendly” and not to “agitate psychos”). and DLC hell…

I’m now really interested in Cyberpunk just because of that game and i love games which makes you thinking about things. For me incentive to clear the room full of badis was XP, 50xp for none lethal takedown and 125XP for 2 ppl takedown
So for 10ppl its 500xp+ so one mission can net you 1000-2000+ extra XP When I got back to china in the story mode(the second time) I had 80% of my agum. unlocked and I think I will unlock them all before the end of the game.
And if you do a mission with out being seen you get a extra 500xp. So yeah as a old Metal Gear fan an completionist I’m loving this game.

Yeah, I don’t know why Joe overlooked this. This is how you get most of your XP during missions. Traveller and explorer bonus by finding new ways and takedown or kill / stun xp from enemies. You can get 1-2 praxis points per mission this way.
And I don’t know where the game was “punishing hard”… If you take your time and plan your approach it’s almost to easy. Especially if you play stealthy.

I just breezed thru the game killing EVERYTHING in my way, ammo is not scarce you just have to go over the level a few times also that way you can get the kill exp and the exp for going in the vents. The silenced sniper and the pistol with armor piercing rounds made this one of the easiest game i have played in a long time. also the controls for hacking on pc are wonky. To much of the story is told thru the cut-scenes.
Deus Ex HR walk-thru: Hack everything, go everywhere and kill everything.

Damn, Joe really hates prostitutes. Between showing us him beating and murdering prostitutes, saying “ewww, prostitutes,” and complaining that one of the love interests is really promiscuous from his Dragon Age II review, I’m starting to think Joe is afraid of sex (or at least girls having it).

Nice review, but you did trim on the bad parts. Ok, I get that Sage and Yousif each addressed these things in there reviews so you don’t want to copy that, but a quick mention is in order. The side quests do little to affect the main story, some people and items only appear after you trigger a side quest, and then disapper after it was over. This pissed me off at the “Robot with a heart of gold” part of the game, seeing as she wanished after that. When re-entering a city, the walls you punched get repaired, and some npc’s (like Greg Thorp) reset to their first dialogue with you. Trivial information that you get does not affect Jensen during dialogues (like reading all the e-mails at Tai Young Medical about the new chip)… and a few other little things like that. But I still love the game, in fact, I’m on my 2nd playthrough right now.

I was also expecting something more along the lines of Mass Effect but as someone who is not a fan of stealth games I was disappointed and frustrated with what I got. Trying to play it without going the stealth route the lack of ammo is extremely frustrating. The mechanic where you can fire from cover without popping out but with bad accuracy is great, but wasted on a game with scarce ammo like this. Scrounging over every body to pick up their gun and whatever items they have on them becomes tedious.

I’ve read that at first they gave out plenty of ammo, but after play testers said the game was too easy, they decreased the amount of ammo as a way to increase the difficulty and force players to think more about how they use their ammo. The result of that change is that the game feels like it’s pushing you towards the stealth routes and punishing you for wanting to play a shooter. The game was touted as as allowing you to play it the way you want to, but it doesn’t really. Yes you can play it as a shooter, but you’re basically forced into using whatever weapons the people you’re fighting are using since that the only way to maintain a good amount of ammo. Deus EX: Human Revolution seems like it could very well be an excellent stealth game, but that’s not what I thought I was getting, and that’s just not something that interests me.

Huh, I’m able to play the game as a shooter just fine. You just need to use cover and try for headshots, which are pretty easy to get.

I admit I was confused when Joe said the game was hard. Or maybe I just abuse the not so great AI too much?

I realize you are joking, but I must thumb you down on principle. The last thing I want to do is promote the already ubiquitous COD mentality.

As for the game, it is an excellent hybrid of RPG and stealth-shooter mechanics, and I urge anyone with even a passing interest in those two genres to pick it up. We need more unique games, that reward different playstyles and exploration, rather then the myriad of linear shooters out there.

Deus Ex: Human Revolution Review

Deus Ex: Human Revolution Review

This series has produced one of the best games of all time and also one of the worst sequels of all time. Due to this, I went into Eidos Montreal’s attempt at Deus Ex with an equal amount of excitement and trepidation. Deus Ex is one of those games that you use as a comparison to all other games that fall into the same genre, so the third installment had a lot to live up to. Deus Ex: Human Revolution has a mountain to overcome in order to get close to its now ancient predecessor (and a mole hill to climb over another). Instead of attempting that near impossible climb, Human Revolution surprised me by leaping over the mole hill and going around the mountain instead.

PROS Wonderful Narrative, good overall presentation, involving, worth multiple plays
CONS Terrible boss fights, some plot holes, level up system not perfect, too little variety
WTF?! No lockpicks? They make a comeback in the future then?

You are Adam Jensen, Security Chief for Sarif Industries. This company is one of the major producers of human augmentations, competing for a place at the top of the global stage. Thanks to Dr. Megan Reed, your old friend/ex/divorced wife (never explained), your company is about to make a breakthrough in augmentation. It all goes wrong when the company is attacked, the scientist team is killed, and you’re pretty much left for dead. This time around, being left for dead doesn’t mean zombies attack, but instead, Adam Jensen becomes one of the most heavily augmented people in the world and is brought back into the fold to try and discover who is targeting Sarif.

From here, the game follows a pretty standard pattern of letting you explore a HUB level filled with mini-quests, before switching to a dungeon style map for the main plot. Rinse, repeat and that’s the entire structure of the game. Sometimes you get two dungeon style levels in a row, but that’s it. I’m not saying this is necessarily a bad way of setting the game, but you can be guaranteed of a few things every time. Each HUB area will have three to four side quests per visit and nearly every dungeon will end with a boss fight of some description (not including the first). Human Revolution uses a very standard approach to pacing that, while practical, isn’t as varied as I would have liked.

But let’s be honest, it’s not so much how the levels occur, but what occurs within them. Starting with the HUB levels, players can expect a wonderfully fleshed out experience. Each of these sections truly feels like a living, breathing world and even the most redundant of civilian characters having something to add to the experience. Just listening to the goings on within the city is a task in itself and one that I personally spent several hours indulging in. If you really want to get the most out of DE: HR, then getting as deeply involved in the goings on within the world is a must. Besides, some of these conversations can actually lead you to finding alternate routes and secrets within the cities.

I wouldn’t want to meet him in an dark alley…

Aside from random chatter, there is plenty more to find. You can engage multiple characters in conversation, even if these don’t lead on to ‘official’ side quests. Should you be so inclined, you can simply explore. This often results in finding items and information that you would never have come across otherwise. Not every section in DE: HR is involved in the quest system and only through striking out on your own will you find everything.

Characters that do lead you to side quests often are named and easy to spot should you take the time to look at everybody or keep an ear out for a shout. You can choose to take on any mission you like, but why you would turn them down still eludes me. These mini-missions usually revolve around going to a location, speaking to someone, finding something, shooting someone, and not necessarily in that order. There is always a non-lethal answer to every one of these quests, and usually this is the preferred method. While it’s absolutely essential for games like Deus Ex to have these types of missions, Human Revolution fails to mix it up.

Well, I did find a few: The post credits ending… There are 4 possible endings, but the Eliza choice is the only one that makes sense with the finale. Then you have the one when the Hive owners son tries to kill you for no reason, even though the original plan would have still worked as a distraction. And finally, how did the bad guys exactly manage to create a glitch to force a factory recall. (but to be fair, I’m not sure about the last one ’cause I stopped reading all the e-mails at about 3/4 of the game)

    Excellent review!

So far there is two things that bother me with the game. First one is being the dumb AI. Very dumb. I’ve seen much smarter AI in the first Splinter Cell that dates from almost ten years.

I found a perfect strategy too to sneak-fight groups : throw a cardboard box, wait for the guy to come, take down, repeat ten times. I also find the need to “hide bodies” not that important. Very often i can sneak right in front of a guard… are they blind?

The graphic engine clearly made its time, but the scenery and cities design are fantastic.

Oh well, this game is still awesome.

    Nice work.

Though I will say – the energy management system was a constant bother – downing candy bars to have more then the one was a really bad design decision – particularly if you’re doing stealth & takedowns.

The other thing I think is a major disagreement with something most people have had to say about the game, and you also had here:

“”Each of these sections truly feels like a living, breathing world”"

    Where are the people?

I can understand Detroit being totally deserted – two reasons why.
    1. It’s nighttime, and possibly very early monring.
    2. It’s Detroit.

In China though? The city you’re in is huge – big enough that it’s a double decker, it’s during the daytime, and you’re in what equates to the slums. There’s barely anyone to be seen anywhere. Maybe I’ve been spoiled with the Assassin’s Creed games, but the streets felt completely deserted and it really sucked me out of feeling like it was an actual city.

The design layout was great, I’ll give it that, but no cars, no traffic, no people? I was expecting this:
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lpnSEALDG_c&feature=related

    And instead we had this:
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iIIuR-HjFho&feature=related

I really enjoyed the game, but it was definitely not without faults.

There are people and (parked) cars.Although DEX draws heavy influences on a lot of “interllectual” Sc–Fi; the series
has never tried to replicate any one film entirely.

Yes, I saw them. What I’m saying is that they are scarce, particularly for what is supposed to be a major metropolitan city – to the point where I don’t believe that it’s actually a city, because there are not enough people there (hence the break from immersion).

I don’t remember saying it was trying to copy a specific film…

Yeah I’ll admit the cities are less populated than you would likely see in RL, but from a game standpoint I think its fine. The AC games are in third person so your vision isn’t obscured by crowds like it would be in first person. it would be much more difficult getting around and finding people if you had to watch out for cars and crowds.

I have to wait to cross the road enough in RL, those terrorists necks aren’t going to snap themselves :3

I did not consider the potential gameplay ramifications from the 3rd to 1st person perspectives with a city with quite a bit more population. That said, I don’t think it would be impossible to address, but given the technology, staff on hand & ideas bouncing around the meeting rooms it just wasn’t feasible with the engine/gameplay mechanics.

            Someday perhaps.

I also strongly agree with this review, although while I was playing on the PC version, I had a constant frame-rate of 30fps. One thing I was disappointed about that Yousif wasn’t, was Square’s bad habit of over-using pre-rendered cut-scenes… I found they were utterly unnecessary in some situations, and given the difference between the pre-rendered and real time rendering (real time often being brighter and more focused than the pre-rendered), it made some situations a little jarring.

Another thing I want to point out is the massive amounts of easter eggs in the game. From Robocop and Demolition man references (the demolition man one had me rolling with laughter) to a letter from a former Australian prime minister, and room names that have more meaning than you would think, the writers threw in just about any and all reference they could think of, which is a delight to all who can find them… or to me anyways.

Let me guess, the Prime Minister is Kevin Rudd?

Actually no, it was John Howard, one of our most longest running PMs. You can find his letter on a computer next to the first turret you run across in the Picus building. He doesn’t state anything about his role as a Prime Minister in the letter, but that’s because he is now just an average citizen, having retired from politics (with a massive pension of that)

You mean he’ll still be alive by then? The guy’s 80-odd as far as I know.
