In a year that has already seen Bastion and still has the fan favorite follow up Torchlight II to come, can action-RPG Crimson Alliance stand out from the crowd or is doomed to be lost and buried in the crypt of obscurity?

Originally founded by a number of ex-Bungie employs, Certain Affinity has mostly stuck to producing works such as map packs for other games and have to date only released one original title, 2008′s multi-platform downloadable RTS Age of Booty. Now the company makes their return to Microsoft exclusivity with the release of the XBLA-only Crimson Affinity, an action-RPG set in and around the ruins of city turned necropolis Byzan. In a year that has already seen Bastion and still has the fan favorite follow up Torchlight II to come, can Crimson Alliance stand out from the crowd or is doomed to be lost and buried in the crypt of obscurity?
| PROS | Great multi and single player action, good controls, well told story, strong visuals and audio, perfectly designed levels |
| CONS | Cutscenes can lack clarity, auto-teleporation can cause problems in online play, length might be a problem for some |
| WTF?! | The sound the zombies make causes them to sound more like the seagulls from Finding Nemo than the slavering undead. |
The city of Byzan was once the head of a great empire, one whose reach extended far across the world. Until the coming of Asturi the Soul Siren, once princess of Byzan then sorceress finally mad goddess, who brought ruin and despair upon the land. Though eventually defeated by the wizard (and her one time mentor then slave) Zampara, the Soul Siren could not truly die, forcing the wizard turned ruler to intern different parts of her body within a massive Necropolis built beneath Byzan itself for just this purpose. For a time Zampara led Byzan back to greatness, yet still the cult of the Soul Siren remained, growing ever more in power and influence. Eventually Zampara, suffering from a growing wasting disease, left the city to die in piece and in that moment the cult struck, taking control of Byzan once more and in time leaving it, and all the surrounding land, a decaying and ruinous place. So it was that hundreds of years passed, until one day three very different and unlikely souls (one an assassin, one a wizard, and one a solider) would find themselves forced to journey the road to, and through, Byzan together. United by fate, yet disparate in almost every other way, it would fall to this unlikely threesome to battle the hordes of the cult in a desperate bid to stop them from freeing the Soul Siren from her grave…
If nothing else, the story of Crimson Alliance gives the game a memorable and fun personality. While the game does employ many familiar fantasy tropes for its story, it uses said tropes in a way that help them feel at least somewhat fresh. It also helps that the game takes more than the usual token effort at telling a story that many other action-RPGS do. For as much as I love the original Torchlight, for example, the game was always more buoyed by its gameplay than its rather bland and slight story. Leading the way are the three characters who serve as the game’s leads, with each having their own definite and individual voices. This in turn also makes them a nice change of pace from the standard silent ciphers who still so often serve as protagonists in RPGs, action based or otherwise. To be fair, once the game proper actually begins, story definitely takes a back seat to the action, but the narrative never completely drops away and by the time the credits roles, players will likely find themselves surprisingly attached to CA’s leads. I also like the fact that two of game’s three playable characters are non-white, something still an all uncommon occurrence in games, particularly those of a fantasy bent. Certainly things are left very open for more adventures with this threesome down the line, an occurrence I for one would not be opposed to happening in the slightest.
On a more negative note, the game employs a sketchy style of artwork for its stills based cutscenes, relying more on voice work than anything else to get across what is happening in any given cutscene. While this mostly gets the job done, I cannot deny that actual animations might have been more effective in the long run for telling such an action packed tale. Nor does it help that a handful of stills can be completely incomprehensible when it comes to deciphering what exactly they are meant to be depicting. Still, this is a fairly minor complaint, and while nothing groundbreaking as far as storytelling goes, Crimson Alliance’s narrative is more than effective for the game needs in this regards.

Don’t own an Xbox so I’m out of luck for now.
Ok Im confused. One of the pro’s is “good single player action” but yet in the review you mention there are some areas that are impossible to get through without a second person playing with you. So can this game be played single player or is this basically a (4player at a time) console MMO?
It can be played single player but there are bonus areas in each singleplayer level that require multiple people to get extra treasures and goodies.
Thanks thats all I really needed to know.
I love the smell of magical mass destruction in the morning.
Glad to see someone showing this game some love, it was kind of hard for me to find anyone who gave any reviews on this game, I plan to do one myself but you pretty much covered all the bases and I couldn’t agree more.
Great review, more people should play this game.

Foxes, more Reemus, and burrito bison are just some of what awaits you in this week’s edition of your best source (that’s our story and we’re sticking to it) for free gaming on the net.
where is your space marine review JOE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I disagree with Joe when it comes to the pricing of the game, I’d rather just pay 1200 MS points for the whole game and all 4 characters rather than paying 800 MS Points (which is more then half of the price of what would be the whole game) for only one out of 4 characters. So, if you want the whole gaming experience and play with all characters it’s 3200 MS points in total. Now they’re also making a DLC for an arcade game to squeeze even more money out of the players instead of just making it free and releasing it like a couple of months after the game is out making sure people are still interested in the game.
Sweet mother of god. I was waiting the entire video for someone to throw an explosive barrel into a group of enemies or for the mage to freeze something, then the big guy hit with the heavy attack, insta-killing it. But no.
I liked the game. It was fun and worth the money, although the story isn’t all that deep.
I was thinking that several times myself, but I couldn’t find out how to pick up barrels. That’s why I kept hitting them in the beginning.
The game looks pretty good, might give it a try. I love when Joe and the BT staff does Dungeon Crawler vids
Always a lot of fun to watch.
You can also play sample versions of the characters to see if you want to bother buying the full deal.
That game was good you can buy all the characters for 1200 which is cheaper than buying one at a time. Torchlight i know I’m late playing this was another good dungeon crawler.
I was very happy with this game, I didn’t know anything about it so I gave it a try and I was pleasantly surprised.
!
I hope to show my friends this too, they love dungeon type games like this.
Good that you like it too
I though Ridonkulous was an Happy Video Game Nerd catchphrase?
If it is, it’s also the name of the difficulty of the highest difficulty level in Crimson Alliance.
“redonkulous” – as first popularized by the fictional character Seth Cohen on FOX’s The O.C.
