This game is great, but maybe its just me or does any one else feel like you dont get into the story much because de characters, NPC and such, feel lifeless, robotic and when talking tend to move around a lot, not really matching body movement with the actual dialog, it just keeps me from really caring for them, i dont feel like they are actually people, again maybe its just me.

Well worth the wait. My only complaint is that I was stupid enough to buy the augmented edition on steam (thinking I would get some sort of bonus items); come to find out that the augmented edition had no digital value.

I can only see people not liking this game if they’re predisposed to hate cyberpunk or aren’t up to par with our “modern” conspiracy theories and don’t see how hard they pushed them in this game.

The game took them so perfectly and pushes them out. FEMA camps, mind control through opposing factions, corporate hostage of the government, the power of the elite ruling the simple, police being pushes into military mode… so much more to go on about.

There is also a very good trailer to watch on Youtube’s official Deus Ex channel including footage of the current technology/capacity we have for prosthetic organs/limbs. They did a great job of keeping glued to the present.

Am I the only one is unable to look at Adam Jensen and not see Cyborg Ed Glaser?

Sometimes it’s also like the most logical conversation choice is the one that fails the most… I just didn’t get that.
Moving a crate and placing it right could sometimes be difficult because of the way it gets transparent… No big deal though.

For some positive aspects now (since I’ve kinda been forced to explain my cons all the time)
Even though I don’t like reading a whole lot in games, I can appreciate the way this game captures it into it’s gameplay. And the fact that it stores it in a databank for later reading is a great (almost mandatory) design choice.
I like the art design a lot, especially for the equipment.
The different ways the same missions could be done, just great.
Sometimes (not all the time though) the sound design could really shine.
The number of details there had to be taken into a count, is… incredible.
The cinematics are VERY well done, and the game could sometimes stike deep atmosphere.
The soundtrack is loved by many. Without saying it’s anything special, it’s good, and suits the game perfectly.

Well the inventory is not that bad but its way too small and some of the addons are too freaking large a 2 piece slot for a ammo container its just unfair. And some of you still say its a stelth game tell me then what point there is to owning a heavy rifle in a stealth oriented game. But the game plays rather well if it was otherwise i would stopped at the second mission ;p. Althou dont know if its just me it plays ALOT like metal gear snake eater its so simmilar in the controls and the game feel.

ya know there are are augmentations to make it bigger, with max inventory augmentations I could hold 4 guns and plenty of ammo for them, and still have room for grenades and health/energy items.

This game…. Sage, I’m sorry. I usually like your reviews, but this… just no. Deus Ex has many flaws, a massive one being it’s story. You can see it coming from miles away, characters are developed enough to care about them, and some are thrown in to simply facilitate a boss fight. The guy who almost killed me at the beginning of the game? I had NO idea who he was until after I killed him, and the game made zero effort to inform me of who he was. The combat was lacking, and the fact that there was no melee combat was terrible. Takedowns do not count, cecause you can only do a limited number of them, and you can’t just punch people, you ahve to enter some sort of game state where everyone freezes while you punch a guy out. Also, the ending blows ass. All of them.

This game was hyped to be much, much more than it is, and that makes this game even worse.

I love this game. My one and only complaint was the long loading times, but a patch was released just two days after the game came out, which took care of this, bringing the load times from 50-60 seconds down to 10-15. That is freaking amazing. :)

I also would call this my game of the year, but we still got a few more games to go, but still, this was so damn refreshing to play, and I didn’t even like the first 2 Deus Ex games (no offense to anyone). Yeah, the A.I may be dumb at some points, but they don’t make the game easy, and I started this game right off hard mode, giving a decent challenge and lasted me a good while, really would recommend this game.

I’m really enjoying the game as well. It’s been awhile since I played a game where I felt honestly rewarded for exploring and going off the beaten path. The stealth elements also feel really good and challenging. Which does cause my only real gripe about the game, being the boss fights that just throw you into a full on gun battle. Something that I was dangerously unprepared for when I first encountered this. But this is really only a minor problem and easily solved by hanging on to a proper weapon and some healing items.

Loving the game so far.My only niggles pertain to the colour filter.
I hate the yellow hue, cant stand it.
The colour hightlighted object/mission items i can do without aswell. And,unless it is included at the end of the game,i miss the classic Deus Ex theme tune.

Howver none of these slight irritants distract from the pure quality of this game.Truly a worthy addition to the DEX franchise…
    Invisible War…fuck off.

playing threw it like crazy and loving it, sure there are some flaws, like how hard it is to be sneaky with hacking because Adam stand right up when he starts hacking, and the boss battles are so not built for a cover based fps game.

As for the FPS itself? Besides the bit of slow aiming you get using a controller I find I can pull of headshot with my 10m no problem (ok laser sights helps greatly, since ya don´t have to fiddle with iron sights)

This game truly deserves that title, or at least a nomination since the year is half over. I really loved exploring the many options on how to finish the quests, and it does get a bit frustrating. But that frustration is a moot flaw, for I’m having the time of my life. Hacking is pretty cool, stealth is very well utilized, being more than human is transcending. Love this game.

I’ve been playing through the game, and I’m very much enjoying it. That said, I do agree that the character “idle” animations can get odd (with all of the posing and moving about). And how often people who are going “Please help me from evil gang boss” are all telling the truth, nobody seems to have an angle. The hooker with a heart of gold? Yup – she’s got a heart of gold, and you can take everybody at their word.

That said, the game play is good, and if you like sneaking, the cover mechanic is the best I’ve ever seen. My other complaint, though, is with the battery. “If you use it it’s gone – oh, and take down attacks means they’re always gone.” That’s annoying as crap to have full 3 batteries, lose 2 because of takedowns, and now I can’t use cloak or quiet feet. Let my batteries recharge, or start providing more energy bars!

Your Right that the FPS part of the game is not the greatest, but this game rewards you for trying alternative means and finding other ways around a situation. It’s not meant to be played like Gears of War or really any other type of FPS. There will be a lot of patience and a lot of waiting as the original game had too.

You actually have to sometimes think of the situation your in and figure a way out of it. It is pay far a more realistic then well any game I have played in a very long time. You can run and gun everything but then you loose a lot of what the story is even about and well it reflects the personality of your character. So this may be why you were not enjoying the story as you just were not taking the time to actually understand what was really going on and just wanted bloodshed and to kill. This game understand this very well and makes you question as in the first game that killing may not always be the right thing to do.

Isn’t saying ” It’s not meant to be played like Gears of War or really any other type of FPS,” a rather large failing on the part of the game design? The game stresses freedom and customization so you can engage in any of the many paths and strategies. If I can go through the game without taking a single life except the bosses, I should also be able to go to the other extreme as well; going Commando and raining down hot lead on everything I see, soaking up bullets and asking for more.

I think its another game that suffers from over-hype, or maybe misleading hype. To the uninformed about the series or the game, like myself, I’d have certainly been upset if I got this game and found out I had the combat capacity of a paper bag especially after seeing the trailers that show Adam using all sorts of fancy close range weapons popping out of his arms to kick ass; in pre rendered cut-scenes, of course, but still, that was the impression they gave.

You said yourself that the game expects you not to take “run and gun” route so you can question if the red path of bloodshed is right or not. Is that fair? Shouldn’t they offer a compelling narrative for the guy who goes psycho and also for the introspective pacifist philosopher? If you take the shoot first ask questions never approach, show Adam’s decline into little more than a weapon for the people who control him. I personally think that would be very compelling to see how taking the route of the killer causes him to lose his humanity. Certainly more so than just making the game more hollow or difficult than if you played the game the way Eidos thought you should have.

It just seems to suffer from Molyneux Syndrome. It claims, and even acts, like you can play it however you wish, but realistically there IS a right and a wrong way. I’m not saying “AGH this game sucks, Im gonna go play Halo pew pew pew teabag!” I just think that gives the wrong impression.

Not to mention, the guy sounds like Clint Eastwood. If I sound like Dirty Harry, I should be able to whip out my big gun at will.

Very well said and I really can’t argue with you at all about that. The reason for all they hype is that the story is as good if not better then the first game. It’s main aspect is a FPS and fails pretty hard on that. The story is as good as the first game and the fun to be had in this game is just limitless.

With That said This is a very much so a Strategy type game. Every bullet has to count of you’re screwed. Just like in real life. It does not play like a FPS because it really is not a FPS much at all just has that element of game play in it If that makes any sense at all. I just think they went to put a more realistic spin on the game play but it does have it faults, but I can easily look past all that for the incredible story and how well it links back to the other 2 games is very impressive.

Also I believe that the voice actor is the same guy who played the lead in the first game.

Well there is such a thing as just ignoring hype and forming your own opinion from what you know, I hadn’t played the first game (Or any games in the series for that matter) so I had no idea what to expect going in, I was expecting a shooter with light stealth element and maybe a vent here and there to crawl through and what I got was a game with a wide variety of ways to approach the problems presented to you as well as goiving me a very interesting plot that deals with mature issues, I found the amount of weapons to be interesting but I hated the RE4 style inventory (Interfaces like that suck me out of FPSes) and felt that the combat could have used slightly more bite in the direct combat approach.

Perhaps hype is not the appropriate term, but the game was framed to be much more action oriented than it is. Like I said, I wasn’t following the game real intensely, but one of the things that got me interested was the trailers where he was using armblades and such to dispatch enemies. That was primarily where my idea of what the game was about was formed.

Ultimately, upon watching a little LP footage of it before I ran out to buy, I was forced to reconsider my opinion to “This is a stealth game” and as someone who does not like stealth based games, I decided not to pass.

Never caught the hype, and certainly never expected Gears of War type of shooting. Especially considering I loath Gears of War.

The sneaking I like, and the hacking was excellent, but there’s still some game design I can’t enjoy.
The menu system is annoying, and the upgrade system (feel free to call me stupid, I guess) was messy to figure out.

I always kinda liked the golden color theme it had, until I got to play it.. same as Matrix (i see many similarities, which is good IMO) Matrix looked cool on poster but when you gotta sit through hours of the dark green tone on the screen it quickly becomes tedious.

Being one-shot-one-kill & evade-and-avoid stealth player and original Deus Ex fan, i have to disagree that game should allow complete annihilate-everyone-upfront call-of-duty-style gameplay. BUT i also have to agree on everything else :(

While i think this is a solid game that worth your money, i also think that it maybe not worth of “Deus Ex” title because its story narrative so poorly represent player’s gameplay and choices. Two biggest detractions for me are:
          1) Damn boses. While i was playing game for zero kills and on a hard difficulty i was prepared for bosses (fully upgraded handgun and couple of mines). Prepared for killing them BUT in original Deus Ex you could
          a) dispatch boss while he’s not yet hostile so your character would then shift the blame on those-damn-terrorists-running-around
          b) kill him in boss fight with few straight shots in the right moment or combination
          c) scatter his guts around with one good explosion
          d) just don’t giver a damn and get past him. that way you could encounter his character somewhere further in the game.
How cool is that, huh ? Not here.
          2) Protagonist completely oblivious to info he gets unless it’s told in pre-rendered cutscenes. You can find some pretty revealing data but Adam would not give a damn. Not calling to his buddies and discussing it, not using it in some dialog, not just wondering and thinking aloud, nothing. But moreover, he will act surprised every time in damn cutscenes. And nothing for you to do with it either, aside from waiting for his next astonishment, with rare exception.

Sad. But hopefully not disappointing. I spent a good time with this game anyway.

The fact that people are thumbing this completely inoffensive and well-formulated thought, simply for the fact it can be perceived as negative towards the game is just… ASTOUNDING. Check out Aeble’s comments everyone, they are perfectly acceptable and to down-vote them is the sign of an immature mind. Nothing more.

Deus Ex: Human Revolution Review

Deus Ex: Human Revolution Review

This series has produced one of the best games of all time and also one of the worst sequels of all time. Due to this, I went into Eidos Montreal’s attempt at Deus Ex with an equal amount of excitement and trepidation. Deus Ex is one of those games that you use as a comparison to all other games that fall into the same genre, so the third installment had a lot to live up to. Deus Ex: Human Revolution has a mountain to overcome in order to get close to its now ancient predecessor (and a mole hill to climb over another). Instead of attempting that near impossible climb, Human Revolution surprised me by leaping over the mole hill and going around the mountain instead.

PROSWonderful Narrative, good overall presentation, involving, worth multiple plays
CONSTerrible boss fights, some plot holes, level up system not perfect, too little variety
WTF?!No lockpicks? They make a comeback in the future then?

You are Adam Jensen, Security Chief for Sarif Industries. This company is one of the major producers of human augmentations, competing for a place at the top of the global stage. Thanks to Dr. Megan Reed, your old friend/ex/divorced wife (never explained), your company is about to make a breakthrough in augmentation. It all goes wrong when the company is attacked, the scientist team is killed, and you’re pretty much left for dead. This time around, being left for dead doesn’t mean zombies attack, but instead, Adam Jensen becomes one of the most heavily augmented people in the world and is brought back into the fold to try and discover who is targeting Sarif.

From here, the game follows a pretty standard pattern of letting you explore a HUB level filled with mini-quests, before switching to a dungeon style map for the main plot. Rinse, repeat and that’s the entire structure of the game. Sometimes you get two dungeon style levels in a row, but that’s it. I’m not saying this is necessarily a bad way of setting the game, but you can be guaranteed of a few things every time. Each HUB area will have three to four side quests per visit and nearly every dungeon will end with a boss fight of some description (not including the first). Human Revolution uses a very standard approach to pacing that, while practical, isn’t as varied as I would have liked.

But let’s be honest, it’s not so much how the levels occur, but what occurs within them. Starting with the HUB levels, players can expect a wonderfully fleshed out experience. Each of these sections truly feels like a living, breathing world and even the most redundant of civilian characters having something to add to the experience. Just listening to the goings on within the city is a task in itself and one that I personally spent several hours indulging in. If you really want to get the most out of DE: HR, then getting as deeply involved in the goings on within the world is a must. Besides, some of these conversations can actually lead you to finding alternate routes and secrets within the cities.

I wouldn’t want to meet him in an dark alley…

Aside from random chatter, there is plenty more to find. You can engage multiple characters in conversation, even if these don’t lead on to ‘official’ side quests. Should you be so inclined, you can simply explore. This often results in finding items and information that you would never have come across otherwise. Not every section in DE: HR is involved in the quest system and only through striking out on your own will you find everything.

Characters that do lead you to side quests often are named and easy to spot should you take the time to look at everybody or keep an ear out for a shout. You can choose to take on any mission you like, but why you would turn them down still eludes me. These mini-missions usually revolve around going to a location, speaking to someone, finding something, shooting someone, and not necessarily in that order. There is always a non-lethal answer to every one of these quests, and usually this is the preferred method. While it’s absolutely essential for games like Deus Ex to have these types of missions, Human Revolution fails to mix it up.

Well, I did find a few: The post credits ending… There are 4 possible endings, but the Eliza choice is the only one that makes sense with the finale. Then you have the one when the Hive owners son tries to kill you for no reason, even though the original plan would have still worked as a distraction. And finally, how did the bad guys exactly manage to create a glitch to force a factory recall. (but to be fair, I’m not sure about the last one ’cause I stopped reading all the e-mails at about 3/4 of the game)

    Excellent review!

So far there is two things that bother me with the game. First one is being the dumb AI. Very dumb. I’ve seen much smarter AI in the first Splinter Cell that dates from almost ten years.

I found a perfect strategy too to sneak-fight groups : throw a cardboard box, wait for the guy to come, take down, repeat ten times. I also find the need to “hide bodies” not that important. Very often i can sneak right in front of a guard… are they blind?

The graphic engine clearly made its time, but the scenery and cities design are fantastic.

Oh well, this game is still awesome.

    Nice work.

Though I will say – the energy management system was a constant bother – downing candy bars to have more then the one was a really bad design decision – particularly if you’re doing stealth & takedowns.

The other thing I think is a major disagreement with something most people have had to say about the game, and you also had here:

“”Each of these sections truly feels like a living, breathing world”"

    Where are the people?

I can understand Detroit being totally deserted – two reasons why.
    1. It’s nighttime, and possibly very early monring.
    2. It’s Detroit.

In China though? The city you’re in is huge – big enough that it’s a double decker, it’s during the daytime, and you’re in what equates to the slums. There’s barely anyone to be seen anywhere. Maybe I’ve been spoiled with the Assassin’s Creed games, but the streets felt completely deserted and it really sucked me out of feeling like it was an actual city.

The design layout was great, I’ll give it that, but no cars, no traffic, no people? I was expecting this:
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lpnSEALDG_c&feature=related

    And instead we had this:
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iIIuR-HjFho&feature=related

I really enjoyed the game, but it was definitely not without faults.

There are people and (parked) cars.Although DEX draws heavy influences on a lot of “interllectual” Sc–Fi; the series
has never tried to replicate any one film entirely.

Yes, I saw them. What I’m saying is that they are scarce, particularly for what is supposed to be a major metropolitan city – to the point where I don’t believe that it’s actually a city, because there are not enough people there (hence the break from immersion).

I don’t remember saying it was trying to copy a specific film…

Yeah I’ll admit the cities are less populated than you would likely see in RL, but from a game standpoint I think its fine. The AC games are in third person so your vision isn’t obscured by crowds like it would be in first person. it would be much more difficult getting around and finding people if you had to watch out for cars and crowds.

I have to wait to cross the road enough in RL, those terrorists necks aren’t going to snap themselves :3

I did not consider the potential gameplay ramifications from the 3rd to 1st person perspectives with a city with quite a bit more population. That said, I don’t think it would be impossible to address, but given the technology, staff on hand & ideas bouncing around the meeting rooms it just wasn’t feasible with the engine/gameplay mechanics.

            Someday perhaps.

I apologize for any typos. I’m still recovering from surgery I had a week or so back and perhaps have not hit the high standard I usually like to bring. I gave the editing team a hell of a time with this one and there was always a chance they were going to miss something.

I’ll be taking a short break from writing while I fully recover. Should be back in time for a major title out at the end of this month.

I also strongly agree with this review, although while I was playing on the PC version, I had a constant frame-rate of 30fps. One thing I was disappointed about that Yousif wasn’t, was Square’s bad habit of over-using pre-rendered cut-scenes… I found they were utterly unnecessary in some situations, and given the difference between the pre-rendered and real time rendering (real time often being brighter and more focused than the pre-rendered), it made some situations a little jarring.

Another thing I want to point out is the massive amounts of easter eggs in the game. From Robocop and Demolition man references (the demolition man one had me rolling with laughter) to a letter from a former Australian prime minister, and room names that have more meaning than you would think, the writers threw in just about any and all reference they could think of, which is a delight to all who can find them… or to me anyways.

Actually no, it was John Howard, one of our most longest running PMs. You can find his letter on a computer next to the first turret you run across in the Picus building. He doesn’t state anything about his role as a Prime Minister in the letter, but that’s because he is now just an average citizen, having retired from politics (with a massive pension of that)
