Never before has a game kicked my ass this hard.
Surpassing the likes of the Persona series, Catherine has become the best selling game at launch in the history of Atlus.
Women be… WHAT THE @%?! It’s a couples co-op edition of Video Games AWESOME! as Becky and Fraser navigate this poor bastard through a lose-lose puzzle game!
Puzzle-based gameplay and sheep have never before been combined in such a harmonious way.
The Sage goes off-script and on-screen to give his unfiltered and complex thoughts on Catherine.
This one is for you, Yousif.
Time to take a cold shower Catherine fans. This is the part where Catherine goes from sexy to “Oh my God, what is that!?!?”

Though grounded in a few well-known genres, there’s really no other game out there like Catherine. It’s best described as a fusion of elements from puzzle, horror and dating sim games; which on paper sounds like something that could falter in quite a few ways. Fortunately, it manages to tie it all together with excellent gameplay, a gripping storyline, and all of the weirdness you’ve come to expect from the people who gave us the Persona series.
| PROS | Unique gameplay, captivating story |
| CONS | It would have been nice to see even more additional characters with stories to tell. |
| WTF?! | Creepy butt monster (pictured below) |
The game places you in the role of Vincent, a 32-year-old man who is feeling a little unsure of where he’s headed in life. His longtime girlfriend, Katherine, is frequently prodding and pushing him and trying to get him to finally marry her. To add to the problem, a younger girl named Catherine shows up and expresses an interest in Vincent. This ultimately leads to him cheating on his girlfriend and having to decide between the two of them. Both girls represent a different path for Vincent: Catherine is the kind of girl who embodies the carefree feeling of being young, and Katherine is symbolic of an acceptance of growing up and becoming a responsible adult.
Much to Vincent’s ignorance, Catherine is not an ordinary girl. In fact, her arrival in his life coincides with a reoccurring nightmare that he begins having.
The social portions of the game take place both during as well as in-between Vincent’s nightmares. The ones that occur outside of the nightmares happen in the Stray Sheep Bar; the hangout of choice for Vincent and his friends. During these sections, you’re free to interact with bar patrons, exchange texts with Katherine and Catherine, play music on the jukebox, converse with your friends, and play the Rapunzel arcade game that’s nested in the corner of the bar.
During texting sequences you’re able to choose which bits of dialogue best describe how you feel about that character. Don’t feel like flirting with Catherine? Respond to her with a cold and disconnected response. Or, should you feel so inclined, don’t respond to her at all. I was definitely concerned beforehand just how well the concept of texting would be utilized in the game, but the developers did a great job of making it a fun and worthwhile feature. It also gives you an even better sense of what the Catherine and Katherine characters are truly like.
Most of the people that frequent the bar have problems of their own, and you can help them by talking with them and offering your encouragement. If you make an effort to speak with them on a nightly basis, they’ll let you into their lives more and more each time. If you stop talking to them altogether, they’ll most likely stop coming to the bar. The Persona Team has always had a knack for creating some pretty interesting characters, and that holds true with the various patrons you meet at the Stray Sheep Bar.
Rapunzel is best described as a retro-inspired version of the puzzle gameplay found in Vincent’s nightmares. It’s a good place to practice moves and challenge yourself, but truthfully the nightmare sequences in the game will probably contain enough puzzle action to tide you over.
The social portions of Catherine are one of its strongest points, but the game could definitely have benefited from allowing you to visit other locations or to include even more people to converse with on a daily basis. There were occasions where I wanted to continue talking to people, but I’d already conversed with everyone located in the bar. A testament to the game’s writing, surely, but still unfortunate.
Am I the only one who thinks this is just a pornless hentai game with puzzles ?
I mean… the setting feels boring as shit. what the fuck is this ? A Love story ? is that another of those Mock-deep cliché-as-hell japanese scenario ? for fuck sake what the hell is it supposed to be ?
these manga graphics are dull and uninspired, I’m sure a PS2 can do some similar graphics… Oh wait it does : the DBZ Budokai Tenkaichi serie. Nothing agains’t having some cartoonish graphics but can we live in 2011 ?
Nothing agains’t puzzles however, Atlus Puzzles are amazing. but when 3D dot game heroes makes more sense than your fucking ”Serious” game, you have some real issues. so yeah, I’m glad I tested it before buying it because it’s just another of those boring japanese game with a good gameplay and a mock-deep scenario. I’m just gonna skip this.
if you’re we’re looking forward Catherine hoping for a deep scenaristic experience, pass your way and get ”Folklore” in your local gamestop Bargain Box.
Thanks for the Review Dant, when I first saw the Sage’s review of this game I was a little worried about the game effective quality. But you proove that my first feelings were wright, so, again, thank you
Hmm…I really need to move to the next gen.
This games puzzle system immediately springs ‘Roll Away’ or ‘Kula World’ for the PSX to mind when you comment about how Physics are thrown out the window. At least this is in a linear path going up. Try it when you have 4 different directions and the blocks sometimes move and don’t touch. Kula World has to be one of my favourite games…ever and you can get it on the EU PSN for 10 bucks, not sure about the US one though.
I liked that you decided to forgeo the traditional reviews you do. It comes off as professional in a quasi-weird way.
I just finished Catherine today and I really enjoyed it from start to finish. I think I got the second to best ending, which I will not reveal here. It’s really worth playing through at least once.
So far I’ve only played the demo, and some of the elements like texting and talking with other bar patrons were cut short, but I really liked the game play. I think you did a great job to represent the game, maybe scored it a point too high for some of the small grading aspects of the game, like the sound effects, plus the game is a little short but it does provide you were some good replay value. I mean no matter how you look at it, this was a solid game. You might not like the story, characters, or certain gameplay mechanics, but it wasn’t poorly implemented or inconsistant.
I’m not a big fan of text reviews but I’ll be looking forward to more of yours.
Thank you for the kind words! I definitely made an effort to break down what exactly the game is all about, because I’ve encountered people who were a little unsure of just what kind of game it is.
Picked up Catherine, Persona 4, and Trauma Center: Under the Knife this week. I’m ready for an Atlus overdose over the weekend.
*whipes away tears* I’m so proud of you :’)
That reminds me, I really do need to get around to beating Trauma Team. And P3P for that matter.
It’s only 12 hours? I expected something a bit longer from Atlus.
As soon as it comes out in Europe I’m getting it
If it ever comes out on this side of the pond, I’ll most likely get it.
When it’ll come to EU, I’ll be waiting in line.
Hope it is soon -_-
I’ve beaten it twice. I loved it. My GOTY so far.
Mine too!
Yeah, I figured “Hey, Normal mode shouldn’t be too bad.” so I started it on Normal. Wow, is it hard. It’s still a really fun game, but some of the towers can reaaaaaaally give you a headache. Especially when you first get to the Ice Blocks. Hoo boy.
I just beat the game on my second play through and have gotten both endings. Such an amazing game! Totally worth every penny and has set the bar for my game of the year.
Totally deserves a 9/10. Great review!
Actually, there are three “True” endings. One for Chaos, Order, and Neutral. You still have one to go.
Touché! I think at this point I might just look it up on youtube, haha. I’m having visions of pushing and pulling blocks, obviously a sign that I’ve played this game too much!
So glad I preordered this, can’t wait for my copy to arrive
Ohh, let me know what you think of it!

After sitting down with the demo for Catherine, Atlus’s newest title, Sean gives his thoughts about the game, what he learned from it, and what to expect in the full title.
Curious about the new Atlus title, Catherine? Well step on up, And I’ll show you the entire Japanese Catherine demo, From start to finish!
One of the coolest bars in gaming also happens to be one of the most interesting.
Want a chance to end up in a commercial? Atlus is giving you a chance to not only do that, but also talk about your own relationship! Yep, it’s gonna be interesting, folks.
Michelle Ruff (voice of Katherine in… um, Catherine) talks about her experiences portraying this character.
Games developed by Atlus are well-known for their special brand of weirdness, and Catherine looks to follow in those footsteps pretty faithfully. That being said, it also brings some pretty interesting elements to the table.
Music Mondays revisits the band that brought us tunes from Scott Pilgrim vs. the World and Bit.Trip Runner.
Btw about the Law vs Chaos thing, its not supposed to be good and evil despite angels with one and devils with the other because this game is heavily influenced by the Shin Megami Tensei games, Atlus’ RPG series. In SMT both sides are portrayed as being asses with the Chaos side consisting of demons and the Devil wanting a world where anyone can kill anyone, and the Law side consisting of God and angels wanting a world where only those that worship them can live.
I liked it. Don’t get what all the hates about.
Part 40: Here’s something you guys didn’t notice.
When Vincent said “Your going to make C/K atherine meet me here” the subtitles said “Her” Instead of indicating WHICH C/Katherine he wanted! And its true what he said before, he cant just text or call her, that goes for BOTH C/KATHERINES!!!
So he may chose the other c/katherine!
All you’re doing is bitching & moaning in this game, skipping dialogue & later coming to something that doesn’t make sense to you & your stupid one-track mind can’t handle it, cause you don’t know how to pay attention to IMPORTANT details of the game.
This is your worst Lets Play video set. All you’re doing is complaining, and I don’t know why you even bother playing puzzle games if you hate them anyway. I don’t care if it’s most requested.
You need to be a better host.
its because he was tired and the chat forced him to play on
It’s a puzzle game. Stop your bitching =/
I don’t know if its because of these long playthroughs or because Kyle and Deacon are missing but I gotta say, this was really boring to watch. I already mentioned how much I love you guys but i’m not gonna make a bias comment just because of that. It might be because its still summer and I rather enjoy it then being online but this was not fun to watch. I saw this live but I missed on some parts so I re-watched the whole thing again. As far as i’m concern, I had no interest whatsoever on Catherine but man…….you make seem like its a chore going through the game.
I can understand you not liking the game since I can relate to that but I still remember what you said on you VLOG after posting the Duke Nukem playthrough. Isn’t your show supposed to be a celebration of gaming? You guys played bad games like Ballerina and that Baby game, those “let’s play” were awesome! Here, you are just forcing yourself with disinterest so I gotta ask, why continue? Let alone 40 parts! I guess since you went that far, you want to finish it but please Fraser, don’t force yourself playing through a game. It doesn’t make a good AVG episode……I guess this is my opinion so let me add IMO…..
I still love you guys and hopefully we get to see more episodes with the whole gang. Bit Trip Beat was amazing(Kyle stole Deacon’s spotlight on that episode), please make more like those Fraser!
This game would probably be a little more fun if you didn’t play so much at once.
I do agree that the story could of been better.
You should of listened to more techniques as it might of helped you in some cases.
“Of” is a preposition, not a verb. It’s “could HAVE been”
Oh, and just wanted to point out. Paul was not a very close friend of Vincent and his friends. he was just some guy that they knew in high school. They weren’t really close with him. Hence why they weren’t really all that depressed about his death and why they brought it up late into their conversation at the beginning of the game. Nothing really significant, just wanted to point out that misunderstanding.
Fraser dude. I like you and all, but you fail to see what a creative and thought-provoking piece of art this game is. It’s a game that tries to be different and offers something new than your typical FPS or RPG. And as the previous commenters have already stated, the game is not trying to tell you whether your actions are “good” or “evil’. There’s tons of clever moral ambiguity and symbolism that is peppered throughout this game. It’s more about whether your actions fall within “order” or “chaos”- neither which can be considered good or bad.
The dream stages are meant to symbolize Vincent’s struggle with his own life and the difficult choices human beings have to make as they grow older. Do you want to live a life where everything is planned out and you have children? Or do you want to be free to do whatever you wish? Nether choice is wrong or correct, it’s just the game’s way of connecting the player to the main character with their own personal life problems. His interaction with the sheep also brings out the chance for all these people to open up to one another and help each other out with their inner struggles in making tough decisions. It’s in-depth psychological analysis.
All in all though, I think this game shows that Fraser is the type of gamer that doesn’t really play much for story and unique concepts. Not that there’s anything wrong with that, but he should’ve tackled this game with a different mindset if he wanted to appreciate it more.
The end is almost there, only one night remains (It is the longest night though, 6 stages, beating even the Spiral Tower.)
There are multiple endings, this will be based of your meter, Chaos (Red), Law (Blue) and Freedom (Grey in the middle). Depending on how you also questions in the last night and what your meter is like will depend on which of the 8 endings you get. There are 3 Chaos, 3 Law and 2 Freedom.
If you going to carry on being honest, that would be awesome to see what you finally end with… but if you want the coolest ending of the type you’ve locked yourself into. Listen to the fans when answering the final confessional questions on the last day. Depends if you want to stop being legit though, who knows. You might just end up getting your best ending anyway…
Wow. You are a horrible person, Fraser. You responded to the questions like a d-bag. XD
Other than that, fun playthrough guys!
Guys, I love your show, I really do, but I don’t think it’s a good idea to play the same game for 4 hours, because no matter how good the game it is, after 3 hours it can get boring or repetetive. I suggest play a maximum amount of 120 hours for episode, I think that would work better (less video to upload, and honestly, I won’t ever watch 40 videos each during 10 minutes or more in one rush, sorry.
I think you mean 2 hours, or 120 minutes. 120 hours is 5 straight days. That’s Marathon level which you do for raising money for Charity.
I dunno, If the game is good enough, I say continue playing it. Catherine is only 10 hours (much less than an RPG for example) Plus it’s unique and fun to watch. I don’t mind it, I understand some people not liking it though. But I understand that is the game is still good or fun to watch, there’s no reason to stop. Look how fun the Minecraft videos have been.
This entire game is so limited; two complete psychopaths for girls, one who rapes your ass with magic every night and nobody points this out – Vincent is an ffing rape victim! The other tries to lure him into a marriage through a fake pregnancy, and the idiot deosn’t see the psychopaths for what they are!
Get a restraining order on Catherine.
Demand an ffing paternity test from Katherine until she fesses up she’s lying, dump her psycho ass, and go find a sane woman. Those should be choices you can make.
And to the former poster, if it isn’t considered ‘evil’ why the hell is it depicted with the evil color red and a devil? And don’t come to me with a devil in Japan isn’t evil; if that were true they should have changed in the English release.
Catherine has the little devil icon because it runs with Christian mythology that the persona team (and Japanese in general) loves to use. It denotes Chaos in the same way siding with Lucifer or Satan in the SMT games denote Chaos.
But wait aren’t Satan and Lucifer evil? You’d have to be very knowledgeable about the mythology and literature that surrounds these figures. (Have you heard of Paradise Lost? Dante’s Inferno?)
In this common day and age it’s not uncommon to see people that view God (Yahweh) as a control freak (Hence the angel and the association with LAW) or even just as bad or worse than Satan/Lucifer. He’s killed more people for not following his rules than Satan ever has.
Where the angel denotes Lawfull order (strict and very socially acceptable) the devil denotes chaos and the freedom that comes with it. Everyone is a master of their own fate and can rise to whatever they choose (Isn’t that all Lucifer wanted? He was just tired of God reining over everything, he wanted a change of management).
For the Japanese these views and religious myths are exotic and interesting hence their usage in Anime and video games.
I think you should read more the Chat Fraser. Sometimes its really painfull to watch when you miss something and the Chat is just screaming around and you dont get it, like at the moment when you missed the checkpoint. In Portal 2 was it the same when you missed the awesome Easteregg and the Chat was just going crazy. I undersatnd that you cant read it all the time, because you have to play the game, but maybe Becky or so can read it more, so you know whats going on.
Btw. Awesome show as always, really enjoyed it. Please play it to the finish, i wanna see what came out at the end.
Greetz
This has been one of the worst let’s plays I have ever watched.
It boarders on the inane. Skipping countless bits of dialog, complaining the game is too easy when you chose easy mode, but the kicker for me is right after hearing a bit of dialog from a sheep who was basically recalling a theory of psychology that deals with the way humans learn to choose their ideal life partner and the person playing the game mocks it because who would listen to relationship advice from this game right? ( see video 28 13:40) It’s not relationship advice it’s psychological theories, yes the sheep also like to wax philosophical allot.
Who would take anything written in a game seriously right Fraser? Except maybe you should because aren’t you part of a site that promotes video games as an art form? As an art form video games would be comparable to movies, books, and fine art. But who cares if the sheep are actually talking about real issues and ideas that relate to the characters, that only makes up half the game.
Also cringing every time you choose an answer that puts you further in the red and you get angry because you denote it as “evil”. It’s not evil at all and if you paid attention to the game’s themes you would understand that, or if you played any other SMT or Persona game. The meter doesn’t denote evil or good. Catherine is not “evil” and Katherine is not “good”. Katherine is LAW this is shown by her controlling nature and strict no nonsense attitude. Catherine is Chaos, or anarchy may be a better word. This is shown by loose morals and “do whatever you like” nature.
The game doesn’t say which is good and which is bad and each side has good endings because neither is right or wrong.
Catherine is definitely a love or hate it game that’s for sure and I take no qualms about you disliking the game for those are your opinions but your vacuous comments about the game, it’s themes, and gameplay show me how you approach games and interpret them and it’s in a way I could never like or agree with.
I pretty much agree. I’ve enjoyed watching the clips so far, but I cant help but get annoyed with the constant bitching, it almost drowns everything else out. Complaining of backtracking when other quicker paths during challenges are in plain sight. Ignoring techniques claiming to know them, while never using them. Skipping dialogue, only to later say a consequence didn’t make sense.
I’m not trying to come off as an asshole and I apologize if that’s how it seems, besides I’m sure I’ll be down voted. In short when you start a game, find out it’s about puzzle solving, complain that it isn’t your type of game then continue to play it, odds are you’ll become bitter towards it and start ignoring everything else the game has to offer. Which became obvious when you started skipping dialogue.
I’ve never really liked VGA, but watching the LP really shows me why. They hate the game, fine, certainly entitled to your opinion. But, spending the entire time just bitching almost non-stop is grating for everyone, audience and hosts alike. Especially when they’re sitting there saying stuff like “Agh let me shoot something” Or “Agh I want to play TF2″ which works to reinforce my belief that this show is hosted by manchildren and the token girl who would much rather spend their time playing a game where copious teabagging is involved. Funny thing is the game wouldn’t be half as repetitive if he and the chat room didn’t repeat the plot points 10 times for every 1 time the game does it.
It’s a Japanese, story based, social sim/puzzle game, dripping with another cultures views of symbolism. On top of that it is from Atlus who are the kings of making weird shit weirder. If that’s not your thing, fine, then don’t force yourself to play it and be miserable the entire time. It paints the game unfairly when the major “problem” is with the player(s).
I’ll say this though, the LP has encouraged me to get the game just so I can enjoy the story without someone who probably shouldn’t have been playing it in the first place complaining the entire time.
so much videos to watch
You are really close, you have 6 stages left, and then you have the ending, which is amazing, depending on which you get. If you don’t get one you like, you can check out theRadBrad on youtube, not me, and he will show you all the endings. Also, check out this video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f7BYP8DcPHw it involves Midnight Venus, and she is, well, you’ll see. It’s amazing! <3
P.S. During this whole thing I was screaming at the screen
40 parts – ARE YOU SERIOUS?
I love your show, guys, but I seriously don’t have time to watch you.

Please finish it! You’re almost there. We watched you F’n play this for hours. You are going to finish it!
Oh. You will. K, thanx! ^_^U
I don’t blame you about the pacing of the story but it is a different style from what most people are use to. Good job as always.
i really want to see him finish it if for nothing else then for his reaction to the ending and im 99% sure he will get the true cheater ending i know i might be pushing it but i really want to see them play to the end
EDIT: nvm i saw that senitre said that on facebook they annouced they will play through the end
ps yay for redundancy^
Entertaining as always. Caught this live, but i just had to go get some sleep. No wonder i couldnt stay awake trough it all, when it was 4 HOURS(!) long. Well i have already complained, (or asked nicely, that dependes on the way you look at it.) that the live shows is not a good time, when it comes to us European viewers. And should therefore be moved to another time of the day, but at the ame time i get that you are buisy Fraser and it is hard getting everybody together at another time of the day. (This is an asumption, since i realy dont know the reason.) The other thing i will ask that i hope you (or anybody realy) can answear is; what episode you meant when you said that you tricked them to think that you had gotten sued by Fox for copyrght of Simpson references. And finaly i will excuse my bad grammar. I know that isnt verry good. but im just 15 years old and from Norway, so im as American as sushi. + Deacon is awesome!
I wonder how this went over in the original Japanese version. I can imagine everything else being either a part of the culture, or even the niche genre this was designed for (that only really exists in Japan), but the repetition? It doesn’t make sense.
I do think Fraser expected something out of this game that wasn’t there. But would its original market have expected something different? Or is this a near perfect example of the game.
Then again, maybe Atlus knew it wasn’t that great, and that’s why they wanted to avoid releasing it stateside. But, then again, why is it selling so well with these obvious flaws?
Why is it always the same guy who are playing? :S
because he is the fucking host of that fucking show and he plays when he fucking feels like it and thee myghtifull frasher never shall give away his pad of POWER (he´s just an egomaniac…)
They are such a cute couple
Nevermind
only if it wasnt 2:30 in the morning i would watch all of this but im tired AF.
wait really : o? he look upset what I saw in the stream =w=, I apologize on that lol. can’t wait then : 3.
Which part has the cat fight?
I really hope they will play the rest of the game at some point. It’s so much fun to watch their reactions as this game gets more and more weird.
Can’t Wait for the Finale, Fraser! You and Becky keep up the good work!
sorry to say, but I doubt they’ll do that. during the live stream, they were quite pissed cause the game was overstaying its welcome and it was taking too long. I’m not too sure what will happen but I doubt they’ll finish the game : x.
Fraser said on the Awesome Video Games facebook page he is doing the ending.
What he said Kingdofox9!
