Thor: God of Thunder Angry Review, 6.2 out of 10 based on 5 ratings

Joe kicks off his Summer the wrong way.

Angry Joe kicks off Summer Break 2011 with a handful of movie-licensed games, may God have mercy on his soul! First up – Thor: God of Thunder! The movie was average (aside from the terrible 3D), so how does the game hold up? About as well as you’d imagine. Can the mighty God of Thunder prevail over the movie license curse?

I have a theory – the quality of a movie-licensed game is inversely proportional to the quality of the movie itself.

X-Men Origins: Wolverine is the last good movie-licensed game I’ve played. The Wolverine movie was pretty bad, but the game was awesome.

Thor was a pretty decent movie and both Iron Man movies were great; therefore, the games were doomed from the start.

I can tell i’m a huge fan of Hack n’ Slash games… But nobody deserves Copy & Paste.

Talking about God of War and Devil May Cry… The PSOne have one of my favorites Hack n’ Slash games, with cool puzzles, combos and spells… And sure it is Soul Reaver (Legacy of Kain series).

Devil May Cry and God of War are really cool indeed, but I feel they lack on the variations of combos and the “automatic stuff” (talking about Nero and the grab stuff on DMC 4), and I only see that when i play Bayonetta, wich on the very BEGINNING, you start with more 100 combos when actually change with a lot of weapons combinations and stuff, not to tell about the finishes.

Excelent review… I don’t know how you have the patience to play those games, you really have my admiration. Can’t wait to see the Lantern one, I hope you don’t have a heart attack xD

    Thor looked…Painful.

Although if you want a recommendation for a Movie Licence game that might not blow monkeys, take a look at the Tie In for Dark of the Moon. While I haven’t touched the game (and thus can’t speak from experiance), I do hear it’s decent enough (or at least, this is what Kotaku has said).

Pretty well done review of the game. You said it up front. Really the kill all enemies to open doors formula only works when you can customize your characters up the wazoo and the enemies drop loot that you can equip.

The way you were leading into movie licensed games not sucking had me thinking you were ready to put up your final score for the whole on Back to the Future The Game. Guess you’ve got something else to take care of first though.

Ha! “Isn’t God of War technically a Devil May Cry clone?” nice one XD
People actually SAID that when GoW came out “oh it’s just a DMC clone”
That proves that copying a system is NOT the problem, there’s MUCH MORE to a game than meets the eye (oh Transformer 3 game noooooooo)

Also, we really shouldn’t use the word “clone” for things that CLEARLY DON’T EVEN COME CLOSE to the original >.<

There are some good movie games in recent times, but they are kind of rare. I’ve had a fair amount of luck with movie-licensed kids games like the original Kung Fu Panda, the PS3 sequel, Cars 1 and 2, Surf’s Up, and Lego Indiana Jones and Lego Pirates of the Caribbean, since they came out alongside their respective movies. Obviously my standards are lower for movie-based games but the controls are decent, the graphics are good, and there is clear respect shown for the movie.

Because the best (and one of the few) Star Wars games that really kicked ass was Knights of the Old Republic. There’s been a few others, like Rogue Squadron (which was okay), but they’re pretty thin these days amongst the piles of bad ones.

I can’t believe people keep missing out one of the best movie licence games ever, Batman Begins The Official Game, was amazing, it went more into the fear aspect and was actually very good. Another would be the game The Punisher, it was bloodiest game I played and it was enjoyable as you could do kill people in such creative ways, like shoving someone in a woodchipper. I can’t remember the story, but I remember the punishment dished out.

only game I can remember playing with 3d was sly cooper 3. But that was only in a few points in the game. Sucker punch was clearly just experimenting different stuff then, but I dont see why anyone would want to play a game in 3d. Never expected the Thor game to be any good. Hopefully there will be some good games that will come out before the summer ends.

But yeah, Thanks Joe. And you’d think they’d have learned, seeing as people have been putting out overlong repetitive movie tie-in games since almost the year dot. But no, even now, a good 3 or 4 decades after gaming was even born, we get the same old shit, and we’re still overcharged for it. Well, I’m not, I’m a PC gamer, but still, I remember the C64 days, when we had terrible Tie-ins. Then again, Ocean put out a couple of respectable licences in Robocop and The Untouchables. But I’m showing my age now. Anyway, I’m rambling, I go.

Strange that all these Marvel titles are produced by Sega backed companies. It will be interesting to see how Green Lantern fares… but there might also be a Captain America game on the way too. And I’m surprised that they didn’t try to make an X-Men First Class game… or did they?

….what!? WHAT!? Colored lightning!? What’s the point of that!?

They really need to up the creativity on games like these. Just because it’s a movie title doesn’t mean they should just breeze through production by giving it a near identical game engine to others. What they need to do is pick a game genre and think of a semi-unique system that works with what goes on with the movie and can satisfy the player’s need for enjoyment. They shouldn’t be holding back like this, this is just pitiful. I want movie license games to work too but this wasn’t the one.

Yeah, most movie based games suck the big ones.
    Personally, I haven’t bought a single tie-in game since the N64-era.

Thank you Joe. For being the first reviewer EVER to write that God of war is a (good) clone of The superior Devil May Cry.
    Good review btw.

Just a little note about Mindjack,Joe…when i rented the PS3 version out 2 months ago they seemed to have fixed the A.I a …little bit
(the giant robot boss wasent firing into the ground anymore) HOWEVER i still couldnt beat it and promptly returned the game
as it was still terrible.Just proves for all the patches in the world you still can’t polish a turd.

I’ll resist the urge to rent Thor methinks!

The last good movie based I played was Toy Story 3. It got decent reviews, so I rented it to check it out.

    And it wasn’t bad.

It was the 360 version btw.

The extras in this game remind me of the bonus content in Batman Begins. Both were hilarious in that regard.
Also, I’m sure you’re aware of that Captain America game, right?
